The St. Thomas Meals On Wheels delivery team is in need of another pair to deliver on Tuesdays.. The commitment would involve picking up meals around 10:30 am at the Senior Center and delivering them to clients about once every three weeks. Delivery takes less than two hours. Volunteers working with children or in contact with children must take Protecting God’s Children workshop and be approved by the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection prior to volunteering. Protecting God’s Children is valid for 5 Years.
Effective immediately, the Keeping the Promise or the 2nd workshop will no longer exist. The Pro-tecting God’s Children Online Awareness Session 3.0 will replace the “Keeping the Promise Alive” training. Each registrant will receive an automated email from [email protected] with a link to log
into their VIRTUS account and begin the “Protecting God’s Children” 3.0 online training. Once completed, this online refresher training will fulfill the 5 year compliance requirements of the Archdiocesan Safe Environment guide-lines. All individuals must conclude the online training within one month of receiving the automated email. Going forward any 5 year or 10 year refresher training registrant will be assigned the PGC 3.0 online training. We have requested VIRTUS Headquarters to send an automated email to inform registrants of this change. It will be important for you to maintain a valid email in your email account. The Fire of Your Love: Saint Pope John Paul II

Those were some of the words spoken when Cardinal Wojtyła became Pope in the “Year of 3 Popes.” In that
year, Pope Paul VI died on August 6, 1978; he had been Pope since June of 1963. He was succeeded by Pope John Paul I who was elected on August 26, 1978, but died thirty-three days later, on September 28, 1978. Then Cardinal Wojtyła was elevated to the Papacy, the first person from Poland to do so, taking the name of Pope John Paul II on October 22, 1978. Hence, 1978 was the “Year of 3 Popes.” Pope John Paul II served from that day in 1978 until he died on April 2, 2005. He served as Pope for 26 years, making him the third longest serving Pope ever. The longest serving is still our first Pope, Saint Peter, who served from 30 to 64 (or 67 by some accounts), for 34 (or 37) years. The second longest serving Pope was Blessed Pius IX who served for 31 years (1846-1878).
Almost immediately after his death, people began referring to him as Pope John Paul the Great, an honorific title, that only a handful of Popes have ever been called. The others being Pope St. Leo I (440-461), Pope St. Gregory I (590-604), and Pope St. Nicholas I (858-867). What is truly amazing is that Pope John Paul II was alive during most of our lifetimes! Not far behind the call for him to be called “The Great,” there was a call for “Santo Subito!” which translates as: make him a Saint immediately. His successor, Pope Benedict XVI sped up the normal five year wait time to begin the beatification process, which was announced, most appropriately, on May 13, 2005, the anniversary of the Feast of Our Lady of Fátima, as well as the 24th anniversary of the assassination attempt on his life in St. Peter’s Square. The beatification process of the Catholic Church does require that at least two miracles be associated with the individual being considered for canonization. Pope John Paul II was found to have cured a person with Parkinson’s Disease (a disease for which there is no known cure) and healed a Costa Rican woman who had a terminal brain aneurysm. He was then canonized on April 27, 2014; Divine Mercy Sunday. Normally the date a Saint dies is considered their commemorative Feast Day within the Church. However, Saint Pope John Paul II’s Feast Day was declared to be October 22, the day he was elevated to the Papacy. St. Pope John Paul II is the Patron Saint of World Youth Day. During his Papacy, along with President Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, he helped end Communist rule, not only in his own country of Poland, but throughout Eastern Europe. He established World Youth Day, and he visited 129 countries, something unprecedented for the Papacy and still unequaled today. He beatified 1,340 people, and declared 483 Saints. He also wrote some of the best Papal Encyclicals ever written, and he was the force behind the creation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. He is a Pope we should all venerate this October 22.
Stewardship Reflection . . .
That we may change our attitude of wanting more to being grateful and sharing more generously. “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(Mark 10:45) If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others.

CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION
Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors facing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
