The Fire of Your Love: 1950s Religious Revival

By Will Oliver

My favorite decade is the 1950s. I like the television shows that came out in the 1950s, especially my all-time favorite, Rawhide. I also like the movies from that era, such as the Alfred Hitchcock movies, Roman Holiday, and John Wayne’s The Searchers. My favorite books of all-time came from that decade: The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Lord of the Rings. And, I love the music from that decade—all of the music—from the Andrew Sisters and Perry Como, to Nat King Cole and the Kingston Trio, to Bill Haley & the Comets and Buddy Holly & the Crickets. February 3, 1959, truly was the day the music died.

There is one thing that fascinates me about the 1950s, and that is the religious revival of that decade. Not only was it a major religious revival that swept up all of America, it also has proven to be America’s last religious revival. The reason for it was pretty clear: America, since 1929, had suffered through the Great Depression, then fought in two theaters of operations during World War II. Peace and stability returned to America in the late 1940s, and it ushered in a decade full of prayers and thanksgiving to Our Lord Jesus Christ.

To complement the religious revival, there was a bevy of books published that decade. What is so unusual, how-ever, is that these books were on the best sellers list (when is the last time you saw a truly faithful Catholic book on the bestseller list?). One of the most popular books of the decade, which reached number one in 1950, was The Cardi-nal by Henry Morton Robinson – a good book about an honest priest rising through the clerical ranks. Even better was the best seller The Foundling by Francis Cardinal Spellman. Imagine, a Catholic Cardinal with a bestseller! It is a heartwarming story of a wounded WWII veteran who returns to New York City, and while visiting the crèche at Christmas at St Peter’s Cathedral finds an abandoned baby. Ernest Hemingway’s best book (my opinion), The Old Man and the Sea, clearly a Catholic allegory, came out in 1952 and it is richly filled with Catholic symbolism and themes. And another number one book was Lloyd C. Douglas’s The Robe, a historical novel about the Crucifixion of Jesus.

Then there were the popular religious movies of that decade, including the film made of the aforementioned book The Robe. There were so many other Christian films or films that took place at the time of Christ: The Ten Com-mandments, Ben-Hur, Quo Vadis, Demetrius and the Gladiator, The Silver Chalice, The Nun’s Story, and one of the strangest, but thoroughly captivating films, Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal. Throw in Alfred Hitchcock’s I Confess or Gary Cooper’s Friendly Persuasion, and you still have more religious-based movies, all of which were popular with American audiences in the 1950s.

Even music played a part as the decade was developing rock and roll, for Gospel music was in its Golden Age, Bluegrass was becoming more mainstream, which was rooted in the Christian faith, and some of the best—and last—of the traditional Christmas Carols came out in the 1950s, from Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” to Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”

Then the turmoil of the 1960s came and America has never looked back (or forward) to embrace another Catholic/Christian religious revival. Perhaps that is just what is needed in our current times. Wouldn’t it be nice to read a best seller, watch a current movie or t.v. show, and listen to songs that treated the name of Jesus Christ with reverence, rather than as an obligatory swear word?

UNA MENTALIDAD DE SERVICIO . . . . Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION

Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors fac-ing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
