FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reading I: Zechariah 9: 9-10 Reading II: Romans 8: 9,11-13 Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30 Jesus liked children, and they seem to have liked him. The disciples tried to send them away, but Jesus rebuked them. In today’s Gospel, Jesus lets us in on a secret. He says that the children understand what the “learned and clever” can’t quite grasp. “Come to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you.” A simple message, one that a child would believe. Our Savior will proclaim “peace to the nations.” Only a child, or a Christian, would believe that. Adult solutions to problems are much more complex. Adults to go health spas, they work out, they take stress management classes, they spend years in therapy. Children take naps, they play; when something hurts them they cry. Children have an easier time than adults do admitting that some things ae out of their control, and that Jesus can refresh and renew them.

This week I thank you for your support and encouragement and I ask for your prayers as I celebrate 20 years of priestly ordination. I was ordained at the Cathedral in July of 1997. Twenty years has passed with ups and downs, with unexpected surprises, and with many more unanticipated blessings. None of us know what surprises the future will hold, but a priest is ordained trusting that the Lord will guide him on whatever path He chooses. I can testify that this is true. I am grateful for the gift of my priestly vocation. I ask for your prayers as I continue to serve as your pastor. I also ask for your prayers for those young men who might also be called to the priesthood. May they be open to responding to the Lord’s call that they also might experience the joy of priestly service. -Msgr. Gray

THANK YOU

The St. Thomas Men’s Club would like to ex-tend a sincere “thank you” to all of the partici-pants and sponsors that recently participated in the St. Thomas men’s golf outing hosted at Mt. Hawley Country Club on June 23rd. Proceeds from the golf outing are used to fund $500 scholarships offered as part of the parishes overall tuition assistance program for St. Thomas students. This year’s golf outing raised almost $7,000 for this important cause. Finally, a big thank you goes out to the St. Thomas Wom-en’s Guild for serving the steak dinner at the church after the event. Also, we are very appreciative of Gordon Jock-isch and his crew for grilling the steaks once again this year. We look forward to an even bigger outing next year.
