Dear St. Timothy Catholic School Families,

I am very pleased with the first semester at our parish school! I was impressed with our Gala in October, which was a tremendous evening of fellowship and celebrating our school. I am appreciative of all the hard

work done by the school families. Also, our first Advent program, which was presented to the entire parish community, was a beautiful evening drawing us closer to Christ.

The curriculum we offer our students, their hard work, and your continual support, are what make our school outstanding! I enjoy my weekly visits with the middle school students, where we discuss current topics of our Catholic faith and church teachings.

The Julia Hillebrand Fine Arts Fund was established by an anonymous donor shortly after the passing of Julia Hillebrand, a St. Timothy Catholic School student, on December 4, 2010. Julia is celebrating her 17th birthday in Heaven this year; she is our precious saint.

The fund was established in honor of Julia to provide the school with needed musical and art supplies. Julia loved to read, play violin, sing, dance and paint. The arch in the courtyard is dedicated to her. The tile on the ground in the center was painted by Julia during her illness.

The fruits of this fund continue to enhance our music and arts program with instruments and materials. If you would like to contribute to this ongoing fund in honor of Julia Hillebrand, you may do so by writing a check to the school and writing Julia Hillebrand Fund on the memo line. Any amount you feel called to donate is a blessing.

Stanci Snow, ‘08

Stanci Snow, class of 2008, was front cover news of the Denver Catholic Register this past December. As president of the University of Northern Colorado’s Students for Life organization, she stands in front of the group’s Planned Parenthood Project display. The hours-long presentation delivered outside of the university’s student center uncovered Planned Parenthood’s bias towards abortion.

The Denver Catholic Register writes, “Club members were trained on how to talk openly and kindly with people, as well as how to handle protestors.”

“Snow was deeply impacted by a campus pro-life event her freshman year and decided to change majors from theatre to political science to promote pro-life politics.”

“…She is passionate about providing [her] peers with resources such as referrals to pro-life pregnancy centers.”

It is a joy to have our alumni visit our campus! (pictured from left to right) Jacob Terrill, class of 2013; Anthony Cook, class of 2012; Colleen Sikora, class of 2008; James Terrill, class of 2011.

More Alumni News! Congratulations to Sonia Kunthara, St. Timothy Catholic School Class of 2007, who was accepted into dental school at NYU!

Student Council collects for NFL Super Kid Super Sharing Drive; plans CSW

Support our school with Box Tops and Labels for Education Please send Box Tops to the School Office! Just ONE Box Top does make a difference. Our students have been going strong and meeting their class goals. Our school goal for this year is $2,000. Join our team and track our progress at www.boxtops4education.com!

Our school also participates in the Labels for Education program. Please submit your UPC codes from products like Campbell’s Soups and SpagettiOs. The full list of products is available at www.labelsforeducation.com.

Please register your grocery card at www.elabelsforeducation.com to help earn extra points for our school. Don’t forget to ask family and friends to save them for you, too!

Student Council led the school community in collecting over 250 items. Student Council officers, along with some Arizona Cardinal football players, helped sort these donations as well as those from other schools around the valley on January 22.

Members thank the entire school for participating in the diocese-wide service project Bottles for Bethlehem. Loose change was collected during the month of December, totaling $237.83!

The Council has also been busy planning several events throughout January, including the hat categories for Catholic Schools Week, dress up days, and service projects. Council members also attended the Bishop’s Mass and CEA rally on January 28 for a day of prayer and support for our Catholic schools. Coming this Lent, Operation Rice Bowl.

Jump Rope for Heart preparations begin

February is heart month, and as a school we will be participating in the American Heart Association fundraiser, Jump Rope for Heart. The event will be our school’s version of field day. All families are asked to support their child’s participation in this lifesaving, educational event. Students have already received packets and information regarding this fundraiser, which is set for Thursday, February 12, 1:15-2:30 p.m.

Many students have already received their first life-saver duck, “Splatter Quacky”. There are many ways to collect more! Donation forms are due on the day of the event. Please NO CASH! Checks may be payable to the American Heart Association.

Mrs. Linnell needs at least 9 volunteers for the Jump Rope for Heart event to help run the activity stations. This will count toward volunteer hours! Please email Mrs. Linnell if interested: [email protected].

Please remember that every student is asked to bring ONE orange for our re-fueling station. Oranges will be accepted beginning the week of the event, February 9.

Our CYAA boys basketball teams recently concluded their seasons. Thank you 5-6 grade basketball coaches Dave Kossler and Arturo Garcia for teaching the fundamentals of the game!

The 7-8 grade basketball team participated in the CYAA Boys Basketball Tournament and showed great sportsmanship, representing our school with pride! Thank you, Coach Andy McGuire, for coaching the boys again this year.

Our softball team was the largest yet with 17 girls! They did a great job learning the fundamentals of the sport and the flexibility of playing new positions on the field. They concluded their season playing St. John Bosco last week. Thank you Coach Brian Pieper, and assistants Bob Dickinson and Jason Behnke!

Our Catholic Identity

This page is an effort to remind us that we are a Roman Catholic school and help reinforce what that means to be Roman Catholic. We are always invited to learn more about our faith and traditions. This month’s contribution comes from GoodConfession.com (a website of Catholics Come Home).

What’s keeping you from Reconciliation? You’ve often heard the

verse from John quoted: “the truth will set you free” (8:32). Well, this verse is very applicable here: acknowledging the truth of your sinfulness before God and recognizing your need

for His grace to help you become the person He wants you to be will really, truly set you free. The words of absolution in the Confessional are beautiful: “I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Jesus is waiting to forgive you—all you have to do is ask! Don’t miss out any longer on the healing power of Confession.

One might say: “I confess only to God.” Yes, you can say to God “forgive me” and say your sins, but our sins are also committed against the brethren, and against the Church. That is why it is necessary to ask pardon of the Church, and of the brethren in the person of the priest.

“But Father, I am ashamed …”. Shame is also good, it is healthy to feel a little shame, because being ashamed is salutary. When a person feels

no shame, in my country we say that he is “shameless”; a “sin verguenza”. But shame too does good, because it makes us more humble, and the

priest receives this confession with love and tenderness and forgives us on God’s behalf.

Also from a human point of view, in order to unburden oneself, it is good to talk with a brother and tell the priest these things which are weighing so much on my heart. And one feels that one is unburdening oneself before God, with the Church, with his brother.

Do not be afraid of Confession! When one is in line to go to Confession, one feels all these things, even shame, but then when one finishes Confession one leaves free, grand, beautiful, forgiven, candid, happy. This is the beauty of Confession!”

-Pope Francis

Sacraments First Confession meditations begin on February 2 (Group 1) or February 5 (Group 2) at the Center for Catechesis at 6 p.m. It is essential that parents AND their children attend each meditation as they are progressive. As with all Sacraments, parents are the first catechists, so consider doing a silent examination of conscience at the end of each day with your child, followed by the Act of Contrition. It will not only prepare the children, but also settle their hearts and give them confidence for this beautiful Sacrament of Mercy. First Reconciliation will be Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. in the St. Timothy Church Sanctuary. Baptism is the gateway to all other sacraments. Please call Jeannie at (480) 775-5262 to register for the next Baptism class on April 7 and 14. If your child is not baptized before age 8, your family will need to take part in the RCIA process. Confirmation/First Eucharist date is May 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Timothy Church.

What’s keeping you from Reconciliation?

“Shame is good, it is healthy to feel a little

shame, because [feeling] ashamed is salutary.

—Pope Francis
