An unfruitful branch does not relate enough to Christ; they do not draw enough nourishment from Him, to draw life, to bear fruit, to continue in the Vine. Unfruitful branches are not genuine enough to bear fruit. Their profession is more profession than possession, more pretending than being, more deception than truth, more counterfeit than real. Unfruitful branches become apostate and deserters – men and women who abandon the faith. God will “cut off” the unfruitful branches. The word cut off means to take away and to remove. In relation to the vine, the branch is pruned removed, and taken away. This is a severe warning to every branch, “in” the vine, to make sure his profession is genuine enough to bear fruit. Scripture says at least two things about the judgment of unfruitful branches that sin. First, the unfruitful branches that sin are cut off and removed from the Vine and destroyed by fire. Secondly, the unfruitful branches that sin are chastened and disciplined by being cut off and removed through spiritual death. The point must be heeded; for Scripture gives severe warnings to believers, that is, to the branches “in’ the Vine. The branches must make sure they are bearing fruit or else face severe judgment. “I am the vine, you are the branches.” Jn 15:5

I am the Vine you are the Branches This Sunday’s gospel today gives us one of the most

striking images of the NT. Jesus is speaking to his disciples. He says, “I am the true Vine and you are the branches, my Father is the Vine grower, remain in me as I remain in you.” But he also tells us that there unfruitful branches. They are taken away, cut off. Note that these are attached branches. They differ from the unattached branches (vv. 4-6). Jesus said that they are “in me,” but they have a problem: they bear no fruit.

The unfruitful branches did become attached to Christ.

They did have some organic relationship to Him. There was a time, a point, when they began to bud and sprout. They even grew into branches. They@ listened to Jesus and the gospel, opened their ears, made a profession, were baptized, seem capable of bearing fruit, appeared to be fruitful branches.

The branches are unfruitful. They are “in” the vine, a

part of it, but they simply bear no fruit. What does this mean? An unfruitful branch does not relate enough to Christ; they do not draw enough nourishment from Him, to draw life, to bear fruit, to continue in the Vine. Unfruitful branches are not genuine enough to bear fruit. Their profession is@ more profession than possession, more pretending than being, more deception than truth, more counterfeit than real. Unfruitful branches become apostate and deserters – men and women who abandon the faith.

God will “cut off” the unfruitful branches. The word cut

off means to take away and to remove. In relation to the vine, the branch is pruned removed, and taken away. This is a severe warning to every branch, “in” the vine, to make sure his profession is genuine enough to bear fruit.

Scripture says at least two things about the judgment of

unfruitful branches that sin. First, the unfruitful branches that sin are cut off and removed from the Vine and destroyed by fire. Secondly, the unfruitful branches that sin are chastened and disciplined by being cut off and removed through spiritual death.

The point must be heeded; for Scripture gives severe

warnings to believers, that is, to the branches “in’ the Vine. The branches must make sure they are bearing fruit or else face severe judgment.

“I am the vine, you are the branches.” Jn 15:5

CSA—2018 Opening Doors to

GROW WITH CHRIST

Stewardship Thoughts Today, in the Gospel from St. John

the Evangelist, Jesus professes, I am the vine, you are the branches. In this beautiful imagery, Jesus represents the vine that produces the gift of life and salvation for His beloved disciples, the branches. In his First Letter, St. John urges us to follow Christ’s directives and live in Him by loving one another. We can accomplish unity with Christ and one another by participating regularly with our parish communion in His gift of the Eucharist. In the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul shows us that faithful disciples are not afraid to witness in the name of the Lord. Jesus invites us into a personal relationship with Him. If we open our hearts to this invitation, our joy cannot be contained. In turn, we will spread this joy by proclaiming Jesus to those we encounter, planting seeds to bear “good fruit” for the Kingdom. Please remember to share your love of the Lord with those you meet.

School News Dear St. Valentine Parishioners,

During the month of April St. Valentine School has focused on our call to care for God’s creation. In addition to our regular morning prayers we are also praying and reading together from scripture every afternoon as a part of our school wide dedication to the pursuit of environmental justice. St. Valentine students and teachers have worked towards our goals as a Michigan Green School, a designation we have earned for the past 10 years. We continue to work on projects that help us to care for the natural blessings God has entrusted to us all.

This month individual classes will learn even more about the importance of working together to help preserve and protect our natural resources through our recycling and reusing, lessons from our garden tower, and our waste free lunches contest. A focus of our action plan this year is the problems caused to our environment from plastic pollution. We hope to impress upon students, and perhaps even remind a d u l t s , t h e im p or ta n c e o f remembering the impact we can have on the environment. St. Valentine parishioners can help our efforts by continuing to use the green and yellow bins in the school parking lot for paper recycling. Thank you for your continued support and prayers. Many blessings, Mrs. Rachel Damuth, Principal

5th Sunday of Easter

Are you ready for a trim? In today's Gospel, we hear the

familiar teaching of the vine and the branches. Jesus reminds us that if we remain close to him-living in humility, following God's law, loving our neighbor-we will notice a positive change in our life and the lives of those around us. "Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit." The Holy Spirit is life-giving. He is fruitful. The Spirit of God won't refuse grace to a heart that is open.

As we progress through life, learning how to live and love, we grow. Our personalities flower. We discover what it is to be a blessing to others. We also experience lack, loss, and the results of our failures. We know what it is like to "wither" at times, particularly the times when we willingly separate ourselves from Jesus. "Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me." For most of us, t h i s e x p e r i e n c e o f b e i n g disconnected and off track generates a desire to return to what is right and good, to return to the vine.

But this Gospel is more than "Are you in or are you out?" Even when we remain in God, when we follow Jesus, we are not exempt from the challenge, the pruning. "Everyone that [bears fruit] he prunes." A prudent trim is necessary in the natural world of trees and vines. Dead wood, broken shoots, and diseased branches need to be cut back in order for the plant to bear fruit. Jesus wants us to be healthy! He says as much himself: "By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples." Take a look at your life today. Where are you bearing fruit? Where do you need to be pruned?
