All Souls Day Mass of Remembrance

All Are Invited!

St. Veronica will celebrate its annual Mass of Remembrance, sponsored by the parish Be-reavement Support Ministry, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 2nd. All are invited to join in the Mass and remember their de-ceased friends and family members. A recep-tion will follow in the Parish Center.

From the Desk of Fr. Tom Dear Brothers and Sisters:

We have often heard the phrase, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In today’s readings, particularly from the Book of Exodus and Matthew’s Gospel, we are called to “love one another as God has loved us.” In a beauti-ful way, Exodus expresses the history of salvation of the Jew-ish people, reflecting their own experience of exile and slav-ery to freedom. The Lord reminds them to treat others with the dignity and respect they inherently deserve for no other reason than because they are daughters and sons of God. Care is to be given especially to those who are most vulnerable and marginalized: the widow, the orphan, and the poor. God rouses the memory of his Chosen People to remember that although he has delivered them from captivity, they were once strangers in a foreign land. We have all perhaps had times where we felt as the alien, separated by circumstance, from others. Remembering God’s faithfulness and steadfast love for us is the foundation, the seedlings of mercy and compas-sion for others.

In what can seem to be complicated times, Matthew brings us back to the fundamental call we each possess as Christians. While the chief priests and Scribes, the Herodians and Phari-sees are trying yet again to trap Jesus, he confounds even the scholar of the law! The greatest commandment of the law is to love God with everything we possess. This is the supreme love which informs all others. Second to that is to love others as we love ourselves. It is through God’s grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit that we aspire, day by day, to love others as we ought to love ourselves.

Today the Church in the United States celebrates “Priesthood Sunday.” Established in 2003 by Serra International, a won-derful organization whose mission is the promotion and sup-port of priestly vocations, this day recognizes the service of priests. In reflecting upon the connectedness of our shared service as priests and lay faithful, here are some words of Pope Francis’ Chrism Mass homily delivered in Rome in 2013.

“Dear lay faithful, be close to your priests with affection and with your prayers, that they may always be shepherds accord-ing to God’s heart.

“Dear priests, may God the Father renew in us the Spirit of holiness with whom we have been anointed. May he renew his Spirit in our hearts, that this anointing may spread to eve-ryone, even to those “outskirts” where our faithful people most look for it and appreciate it. May our people sense that we are the Lord’s disciples; may they feel that their names are written upon our priestly vestments and that we seek no other identity; and may they receive through our words and deeds the oil of gladness which Jesus, the Anointed One, came to bring us. Amen.” - Fr. Tom

In Remembrance of our Dearly Departed

Reflecting on the Word

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time The poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning asks, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Je-sus is asked which commandment is the greatest. To love God with all you have and are and to love your neighbor as yourself, he answers. How do we love God? Love your neighbor. How do we love our neighbor? Love yourself with a healthy self-love. We need to ask, who is my neighbor? The book of Exodus answers this question. All people are your neighbors, including those most in need, those alien to you or your country; widows, who had no status in that day; and orphans, who were utterly alone. Treat all people with respect and dignity, as God treated you in Egypt. In other words, imitate God by doing unto others what God has done to you. Paul gives similar advice. You imitated me by receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit. Invite others to do the same. We struggle with how to live these words, espe-cially when it comes to welcoming strangers, immi-grants, those who harm us, or those in any kind of need. Our feelings run deep, but the challenge from the scriptures and from the words of Pope Francis is clear: “The Church must be a place of mercy freely given where everyone feels welcomed, loved, for-given, and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel” (Evangelii Gaudium). The Pope set an ex-ample by bringing three immigrant families to live at the Vatican, another challenge. We need good judg-ment. St. Francis de Sales gives practical advice: Put others in your place and yourself in theirs, then treat the other the way you would like to be treated. That’s how we love God, neighbor and self.

For Prayerful Consideration & Discussion Who is the alien, widow, orphan, or person in

need whom you have trouble seeing as your neighbor? Why?

When has God’s love for you surprised you and helped you love in return? - Living the Word

THE CONSECRATION OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, Part 31 & 32

SENHOR ALREDO DA SILVA SANTOS, WHO WAS NOT A BELIEVER in the apparitions, drove to the Cova that day from Lisbon in an automobile. Here is his testimony: “We made our arrangements, and went in three motor cars on the early morning of the 13th. There was a thick mist, and the car which went in front mistook the way so that we were all lost for a time and only arrived at the Cova da Iria at midday by the sun. It was absolutely full of peo-ple, but for my part I felt devoid of any religious feeling. When Lucia called out: ‘Look at the sun!’ the whole multitude repeated: ‘Attention to the sun!’ It was a day of incessant drizzle but a few moments before the miracle it stopped raining. I can hardly find words to describe what followed. The sun

began to move, and at a certain moment appeared to be detached from the sky and about to hurtle upon us like a wheel of flame. My wife --- we had been married only a short time --- fainted, and I was too upset to attend to her, and my brother-in- law, Joao Vassalo, supported her on his arm. I fell on my knees, oblivious of everything, and when I got up I don't know what I said. I think I began to cry out like the others. An old man with a white beard began to attack the atheists aloud and challenged them to say whether or not something supernatural had occurred.” This is the aforementioned testimony of the poet, Alfonso Lopes Vieira, who witnessed the miracle from 25 miles away: “On that day of October 13, 1917, without remembering the predictions of the children, I was enchanted by a remarkable spectacle in the sky of a kind I had never seen before. I saw it from this veranda . . .” And the aforementioned Fr. Ignacio Lourenco describes what it was like to see the miracle as a 9-year old schoolboy from 10 miles away: “I was only nine years old at this time, and I went to the local village school. At about midday we were surprised by the shouts and cries of some men and women who were passing in the street in front of the school. The teacher, a good, pi-ous woman, though nervous and impressionable, was the first to run into the road, with the children after her. “Outside, the people were shouting and weeping and pointing to the sun, ignoring the agitated questions of the school-mistress. It was the great Miracle, which one could see quite distinctly from the top of the hill where my village was situated --- the Miracle of the sun, accompanied by all its extraordinary phenomena. “I feel incapable of describing what I saw and felt. I looked fixedly at the sun, which seemed pale and did not hurt the eyes. Looking like a ball of snow revolving on itself, it suddenly seemed to come down in a zigzag, menacing the earth. Terri-fied, I ran and hid myself among the people, who were weeping and expecting the end of the world at any moment. “Near us was an unbeliever who had spent the morning mocking at the simpletons who had gone off to Fátima just to see an ordinary girl. He now seemed to be paralyzed, his eyes fixed on the sun. Afterwards he trembled from head to foot and lift-ing up his arms fell on his knees in the mud, crying out to our Lady. “Meanwhile the people continued to cry out and to weep, asking God to pardon their sins. We all ran to the two chapels in the village, which were soon filled to overflowing. During those long moments of the solar prodigy, objects around us turned all the colors of the rainbow. We saw ourselves blue, yellow, red, etc. All these strange phenomena increased the fears of the people. After about ten minutes the sun, now dull and pallid, returned to its place. When the people realized that the danger was over, there was an explosion of joy, and everyone joined in thanksgiving and praise to our Lady.” THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN HAD FULFILLED HER PROMISE and provided a miracle to prove the truth of her Message of Peace. The apocalyptic character of the miracle --- those witnessing it thought the world was ending, indeed --- revealed the urgency of her message of repentance, the offering of sacrifices for the conversion of sinners and reparation for sins, and the daily reci-tation of the Holy Rosary. In many ways, we can say that the Miracle of the Sun is the great punctuation mark on the appari-tions of Our Lady at Fátima. One detail is quite interesting from the October apparition. Recall that, while the people were witnessing the Miracle of the Sun, the children were seeing the vision of the Child Jesus, Our Lady, and St. Joseph. In that vision, the Child Jesus and St. Joseph together blessed the world. It was revealed later to St. Jacinta that the blessing of St. Joseph brought the end to World War I. It was also revealed to her that the War would have ended in 1917, but that, as a punishment for the imprisonment of the children, it was permitted to go on one year more, ending on November 11, 1918. The ways of God and the ways of men are often so different. The events of Fátima reveal this to us in clear focus. After the Miracle of the Sun and the final apparition, the three shepherd children returned to the duties of their ordinary lives. Francisco and Jacinta knew that Our Lady would take them to Heaven soon and so they prepared intensely for that mo-ment. Lucia knew that she would live a long while in order to spread devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary throughout the world. Our Lady had told her to learn to read and write for this purpose. The three children prayed the Rosary constantly and offered everything in their lives as sacrifices in reparation for sins and for the conversion of sinners. In many ways, they had be-come public figures in Catholic Portugal, and many of the faithful, including many priests, sought to visit them as they visited the Cova da Iria. The children became living embodiments of the message of Our Lady of Fátima. † - By Fr. Joseph Previtali
