Points to Ponder from Fr. Del The story is told of the man who was becoming impatient with the slow, long lines in an airport terminal. He stood, shifting his weight on each leg as flights were cancelled and delayed, and passengers re-routed. The man wore his attitude on his face. Sure that he was the most important person in the line, finally expressing the arrogance that filled him, he loudly bellowed to the service representative behind the counter, “How long is this going to take? Don’t you know who I am?” There was a moment of silence, and then the representative calmly picked up the telephone, and people throughout the terminal heard the “beep” that calls for our attention, followed by the announcement, “Ladies and Gentlemen, we need your assistance at the desk. There is a man here who does not know who he is. If you know him, please come to the desk.” Our own impatience is, if we are honest with ourselves, one of the greatest obstacles to allowing ourselves to understand the situation of others. Why? Probably because impatience is the trademark of arrogance, of thinking that I am the standard bearer of all righteousness. “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Keep in mind, Peter was actually thinking that he was being quite generous in his proposal. Jewish law required forgiving three times. Peter doubled it, and threw in one for good measure. But that was not enough. Jesus tells us not to forgive seven times but seventy-seven times (compared to Luke’s seven times a day). In other words, ad infinitum, without end, infinity. We are to forgive always. Jesus continues by giving an ageless example. A servant who owed a huge amount is brought before his master. The servant pleads with the master, who is moved with pity for the servant and forgives his debt. That very same servant, after his debt was forgiven, went to another servant who owed him a mere fraction of the amount just forgiven. But the one who had been forgiven for his debt refused to forgive his fellow servant’s loan. Both servants used the same words, “Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.” The first servant found mercy, but refused to offer that same mercy to one of his own. The first one had forgotten who he was! He had become so impatient, so arrogant, that he could not find it in himself to offer that same amnesty to another. God (a.k.a. the airline representative behind the counter) announced that impatience and self-centeredness has no place in the Kingdom of God. “Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?” The message stings, but it is one that calls us to do our part in forgiving others, just as God has forgiven each one of us.

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is scheduled on Sundays either at Mass or at 12:30 p.m. Expectant parents should plan on attending the Baptismal Preparation Program, held six times a year. Call the Parish Office to schedule the Baptism and preparation program. The Sacrament of Baptism for adults and school-age children is usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil, along with the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Preparation occurs in steps and stages throughout the year with weekly meetings on Sunday after 9:30 a.m. Mass. Call Emily Besl at 688-3143 or the Parish Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) is celebrated each Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or by appointment with the pastor. Seasonal Penance Services are also celebrated. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be scheduled by calling the pastor before a medical procedure, or in the event of a serious illness, or after each Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. When hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office; this is the only way we know if a parishioner has been hospitalized. In case of medical emergency or death, call the parish office and follow prompts.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT The Sacrament of Marriage is scheduled by calling the pastor or deacon to begin the process of marriage preparation, at least six months prior to the anticipated wedding date. A date for the wedding is set only after meeting with the pastor or deacon. Discernment for the Sacrament of Orders (ordination to the Priesthood and Diaconate) is facilitated by contacting the pastor or Vocation Director of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Those interested in pursuing Religious Life may also make these contacts.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Religious Education Program (R.E.P.) for children (ages 3 years through 8th Grade) begins each year in September and ends in May. Call Theresa Kearney, Coordinator of Children’s Faith Formation or Barb Farwick, Administrative Assistant, at 688-3155 for more information.
