Reflection on Our Cover
Before the blessing of the palms presents an exuberant scene. Imagine the large crowd just outside Jerusalem spreading their cloaks on the road, breaking off palm fronds, strewing them about and waving them as Jesus passes by. Hear the people shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David.” As Jesus enters the city, the people there are asking, “Who is this?” The crown accompanying him answers: “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth of Galilee. This is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” A journey of joy. But a few days later Jesus took his last journey: a winding walk from the upper room on Thursday night out to the garden to Geth-semane, then to the house of Caiaphas, on to Pilate’s, house and courtyard, and, finally, to the hill of Calvary. It ended with his being nailed to a cross, and after three torturous hours, he died. At this journey’s end, there was one final cry from a small group, a centurion and the men with him: “Truly, this was the Son of God!”

Parish Office Closing Early
In observance of Good Friday, the Parish office will close at 12:00 noon on Friday, April 22, 2011.

We wish you all a Blessed Holy Week and
Joyous Easter!
Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to ab-stain from meat on Good Fri-day. Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to
fast on Good Friday. On Good Friday the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.
Almsgiving Thanks to our St. Veronica Students
Thank you one and all who brought canned food for St. Vin-cent de Paul Pantry during the class Mass on Friday April 1st.
You have made a difference for many families!
From the Pastor's Desk Palm Sunday Dear Parishioners, G.K. Chesterton has a poem called “The Donkey” in which the donkey enumerates all the bad and sad things that humans have attached to his life. Toward the end of the poem, however, he is upbeat because something unforgettably good has hap-pened in his life: “Fools! For I also had my hour; One far fierce hour and sweet: There was a shout about my ears, And palms before my feet.” The reference ob-viously is to how the donkey carried the Son of God into Jerusalem. The Lord chose a lowly, despised animal like the donkey. Jesus made him worthy of his triumphant entry into the holy city where he would accomplish the earth-shaking mission of re-demption for the whole world. Yes, the donkey had a sweet hour. He heard a shout of hosannas and there were palms before his feet. We are beginning the Holy Week this Sunday—the Palm Sunday. We are entering the holiest time of our liturgical period. We walk with Jesus as he begins his mission of suffering, dying and rising to a new life. We will contemplate how Jesus will preach his final message and run into the maelstrom of opposition. The tide will turn against him, but Jesus will keep his mission pointed firmly in the direction of the will of his Father. He will do the last supper at which he will give us his own body and blood; he will urge us to wash the feet of one another; he will command us to love one another. Then he will be betrayed and go through terrible suffering; he will die a shameful death on the cross. A terrible beauty will be born out of that death. Je-sus will rise victorious and become our source of hope and new life. Let’s walk with Jesus and talk with him as he will go through anguish and anxiety. We shall let him know that we are with him and that we will feel his feelings and think his thoughts and stand with him in his sufferings and enter into the joy and glory of resurrection. I wish you a holy week special and memorable for spirituality and prayer. May this Holy Week lead you into your own depth of being. May this special week bring you closer to your own family and friends. May this week fill you with the presence of Christ who is our life and our resurrection. Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

FEAST OF FAITH The Liturgies of Holy Week
Holy Week is the culmination of the liturgical year. During these holy days, the liturgy will lead us, with Jesus, to the depths and to the heights. It begins with a harsh juxtaposition, as we carry palms in remembrance of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem and then listen to the Passion accord-ing to Matthew, as the King is handed over for cru-cifixion. Then, on Holy Thursday, we remember the night Jesus was handed over—the night he gave himself for us and to us, to live in our midst forever in the sacrament of his Body and Blood. On Good Friday, we touch with our hands the mystery of the Lord’s cross, the instrument of torture that has be-come the tree of life. Then, at the great Easter Vigil, the lighting of the paschal candle speaks to us of the triumph of light over darkness, of life over death. The resurrection of the Lord becomes a living reality in our midst as the catechumens for whom the Church has prayed throughout Lent are plunged into the mystery of Christ’s death and share in the glory of his resurrection. These are indeed holy days, the culmination of the Church’s liturgy, and an invita-tion to participate in the very life of Christ. Come, let us worship. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S.
