Pastor’s Notes
The brutality of the Assyrians against the Jews was
indescribable. As you read today’s passage from Isaiah,
recall the pictures that we have seen from Nazi death
camps of people looking out through barb wires with no
hope. The Assyrians were the first to build concentration
camps. Even today we can recall similar camps. History
seems to repeat itself. Isaiah is presenting hope for the
future of Israel. For us Christians we see even a greater
hope as we await the Second Coming and the formation
of the New Jerusalem, where all those who suffered on
this earth will be restored into wholeness and be under
the protection of God Himself. Isaiah’s prophecy
foretells a collective restoration.
Last week’s gospel showed an expectation of John the
Baptist’s Messiah. John was expecting a punishing
leader who would right the wrongs of the oppressors and
hypocrites. Now John is silenced in prison and is
puzzled about the activities of Jesus. Jesus is not what
John expected. Jesus’ response to John’s messengers
gives John a totally different insight into the
Messiah. Jesus’ miracles and teachings give evidence
to what other prophets had foretold, but not with
militancy. This made Jesus a stumbling block to the
Jews who were expecting a strong political leader. We
could say that Jesus burst their bubble. The New
Testament is now disclosed and has begun. Jesus
presents a deeply personal restoration of souls, one at a
time.
Jesus asks the followers of John the Baptist why they
were going out to see Him. What was attracting
them? It seems to be His holiness and humility along
with the message that all of us are waiting for. What a
compliment Jesus gives John, “There has been none
greater than John the Baptist.” Then Jesus goes on to
tell us what it will be like living in the New
Jerusalem. John’s greatness on this earth pales in
comparison to the one who enters the Kingdom of
Heaven by “the skin of his teeth.” Imagine what John’s
greatness will be like in Heaven. Yes, there are rewards
for living the way Jesus will present us when He gives His
Sermon on the Mount. May our Christmas not be ruined
by the false hopes of consumerism.
Fr. Euk
“The blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are
cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised.” Jesus has
quite a résumé. When asked whether or not he is the
long awaited Messiah, Jesus replies with this list of his
credentials as proof of his position. These signs and won-
ders speak volumes, to be sure. But perhaps the most
interesting line on the list is his concluding one, “the poor
have the good news proclaimed to them.” Why does he
count this among his litany of miracles? What is so re-
markable about sharing good news?
Perhaps Jesus included this element of his work--the
preaching of good news--to remind his followers that the
physical healings were not the ultimate goal of his mis-
sion. Rather, the spiritual healing that comes from hear-
ing the good news of salvation is what Jesus was really
about. The “poor”--which in a sense means all of us sin-
ners, trapped by the poverty of the sins that enslave us--
are freed by Jesus’ message of a loving God who wants
to bring us into his kingdom. Our poverty is erased by his
richness. His mercy “undoes” our sin and we are invited
to become the children of God who share in the glories of
his heavenly abode.
Sometimes it’s tempting to just want the visible miracles.
But the invisible ones--the conversions that take place in
the silence of the human heart--are truly the more im-
portant works of God. Such interior transformation is
what leads us to eternal life; even a physical cure won’t
last for eternity--death still comes at some point. But the
really good news is that this miracle of conversion is
available to all of us. And this season of Advent is the
perfect time to let God work his miracles in our hearts.
CHRISTMAS CANTATA Dear friends in St. Veronica Parish,
This year, the Senior Choir will offer a Cantata entitled
‘The Living Light’, a dramatic musical presentation by
Ruth Elaine Schram, which celebrates the birth of Christ
our Savior and explores the inner thoughts of the people
who participated or witnessed the miraculous events of
the first Christmas. The Cantata will be presented at
9:30PM on Christmas Eve, before the 10PM High Mass.
We hope that attending ‘The Living Light’ will enhance
your Christmas experience.
