Welcome to

St. Viator! Our parish is

administered by the Clerics of St. Viator, Chicago Province. The Clerics of St. Viator were founded in Vourles, France in the 19

th century after the

French Revolution. Fr. Louis Querbes created the order to provide much-needed education. As patron

saint of the congregation, Fr. Querbes chose Viator, a young, 4

th century catechist-lector of

the cathedral church of Lyons, France. St. Viator was devoted to teaching youth, especially the poor, and serving parishes in all matters related to the liturgical practice. The “Viatorians” came to Las Vegas in 1954. They were asked to administer the first Catholic high school in southern Nevada and they started this parish as well. Mass was held in the home of parishioners, then a bank and various other locations. The parish moved to this location in the ‘60s when the parish school was built. Our current church was opened in 1995. Our Parish Center, the building immediately to the south, was the church from 1977 until 1995 and before that, Mass was said in the school gym. Our Parish School is pre-K thru 8

th, with

double classrooms for grades K-8. Students are offered a variety of co-curricular programs, including a science fair, geography bee, spelling bee, forensics, band, video broadcasting, and class trips for Junior High, culminating with the 8

th Grade trip to

Washington, D.C.

Welcome!

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, volunteering for a parish organization, when asked to be a baptism or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptism and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active, and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are always available online at www.stviator.org and at the parish office, or fill out the information below and drop it in the collection basket. We will mail a registration packet to you.

Stewardship and Our Baptismal Promises The practice of renewing baptismal promises at Easter is essential for those who take the stewardship of their faith seriously. It focuses the steward’s attention on answering Christ’s call to follow after him, proclaiming his Gospel in word and deed, putting the Eucharist into action, building up the communion of faith, and sharing Christ’s peace with a broken world. Renewing our baptismal promises and the baptismal focus of holy water is most compelling at the Easter Vigil where the sprinkling is directly connected to the renewal of promises. The use of holy water compels us to reflect on our baptism, calls us back to our central identity as Catholic Christians, and strengthens us anew “as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God” (1 Cor. 4:10). The baptismal water of Easter performs a twofold purpose. It baptizes the catechumens and it refreshes our covenant with God in Christ through the renewal of our baptismal promises. It “seals” our resolve to follow Jesus more closely. Many who say they are Catholic desire to live their lives as if Jesus was still in the tomb. But he is not. Christ has risen and is present among us, calling us each day to follow after him and radiate his example onto the world. Living our baptismal promises inspires us to be good stewards of God’s plan as individuals and as a Eucharistic community in the 21st century.

The baptismal focus of holy water is most compelling at the Easter Vigil

where the sprinkling is directly connected to the renewal of promises.

Rosary Makers Rosary Sale

Did you know that most of the rosaries made by our Rosary Makers are given away? Missions, ministries and patients at hospitals are the recipients of most of the beautiful rosaries produced by the St. Viator Rosary Makers.

Please support their efforts. Rosaries are on sale in the office. They make a perfect gift for Mother’s Day, First Holy Communion, or Confirmation!

The proceeds from rosary sales are used to purchase materials to continue their ministry of producing rosaries which bring hope and comfort to so many who are struggling.

Come join St Viator Young Adult Ministry at Taizé Prayer. Taizé gives you time to slow down the busyness of your life and take a moment to grow closer to God in prayer, music, and scripture.

Words of Wisdom

“Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter! Jesus Christ, became the incarnation of God's mercy, out of love for us, died on the cross, and out of love he

rose again from the dead. That is why we proclaim today: Jesus is Lord! ” ~ Pope Francis

St. Viator Easter Season Prayer

Alleluia - Christ is risen! As the glory of Easter becomes a distant date on the calendar, we pray it might be more than a distant memory. May we always feel the joy the Apostles and Mary must have felt to find Jesus once again alive. May we hold to the promise that we will also have life after death. May we always seek to be reconciled with God and with others, sharing the mercy we receive from God with all those we meet. And may we always live our life knowing that Jesus is risen indeed! We ask this, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Easter Hope Came Early, Courtesy of SVS Students

The promise of Easter gives hope to everyone. On this day, it’s nice to know the students of our Parish School are spreading hope in our community, most recently as both 7

th Grade classrooms

visited Three Square Food Bank, which collects food donations throughout the county and distributes it to people in need.

When they returned to school, the students wrote essays as part of their English class. Here’s a sampling of what they learned from their field trip:

“Today I learned that I am blessed. One in every seven children in Southern Nevada goes hungry and I am very lucky to be one of those kids with food.” Milly C.

“The child that goes hungry could be the classmate right next to me. Everyone needs to know facts about child hunger. I have never felt so passionate in my life!” Keoni D.

“I learned that volunteer service isn’t easy, but it does leave a great feeling. You know you’ve done something good and helpful.” Julianne G.

“One of the interesting things about Three Square is that there are quotes printed on the wall. Some of the ones that caught my eye were A hungry man does not know right from wrong, he only sees food and A hungry man only sees God in bread.” Jayden L.

“I’ve always whined when I was hungry, but now I realize it really is bad to whine and waste food because there are people in this world that go to sleep hungry.” Jordan M.

“Working as a team, we were able to make a huge difference. We made an impact on these kids’ lives and in doing so, we are doing what God asks of us.” Elora P.

“The feeling when you help somebody is indescribable! I felt like l had a huge purpose in the world.” Isabel N.

“Some kids rely on school to provide them with food. Three Square helps with that. Three Square was really fun and helping people makes you feel great.” Natalie B.

“I learned a lot and I was also humbled. Sometimes people don’t realize how blessed they are. Some people, myself included, don’t know what it is like to be hungry for days.” Rylie P.

“As people from St. Viator, we should help children in need.” Maritza S.

“I’m really happy we did it during Lent because Lent is a time to grow close to God, and I have never felt so close to God in my life. While preparing the meals, I never stopped smiling. I continuously thought about the look on a child’s face as they ate food I helped prepare for them.” Katelyn V.
