ALTAR SOCIETY CANCELLATIONS

For the health and safety of Altar Society Members, and in complying with our government and medical leaders, we must cancel the following:

April 20th Meeting May Breakfast

Our prayers are with you all. If we can help anyone, please let us know.

PARISHIONERS: THANK YOU!

Thank you for generously responding to the Auxiliary’s Bakeless Bake Sale request this year! We anticipate that people’s need for food will increase this year so rest assured that your donations will be wisely used and also very much appreciated.

Update: The Auxiliary suspended weekly packing/delivery and suspended the Easter food giveaway because of health concerns regarding the pandemic. We will resume when personal safety is no longer an issue. We will, however, help monetarily the men’s SVDP Society who offer holiday grocery gift cards to families requesting our help. In the meantime, save up canned and packaged food to help the parish carry on the tradition of providing to our neighbors in need!

God Bless you all! St. Vincent de Paul Auxiliary

Having renewed my commitment to the Lord and filled with joy in his victory over death, how can I bear fruit in the world? How can I come to a deeper and firmer belief? How can I guide others in their faith?

On behalf of Fr. Norm, Fr. Dave, and the parish staff, we wish you

all a most Blessed Easter and Easter season!

The office will be closed Easter Monday, April 13.

It sounds uncomfortable and awkward to say to people this year – "Happy Easter." Maybe we can get a helpful and hopeful insight from our Scripture, especially the New

Testament. Some modern translations will use the word "Happy." In the Beatitudes, translated from the original Greek, the word used throughout is "Blessed are…" Jesus on the day he was crucified would not have spoken of himself as "happy." However, he knew he was deeply blessed. Through all the moments of anguish, sadness, suffering, and feeling of abandonment he trusted he was Blessed. He was prayerfully aware that his Heavenly Father very deeply loved him, and was with him through it all. He trusted in faith that such a horrible death was not his ultimate destination. He deeply believed that he would be raised up by his Heavenly Father and return to his disciples to show us, for all time, that through God's love, death has been overcome. We are called to

believe, even in these devastating times, that as we focus on suffering and death we also focus on the goodness of our Creator God who gave us the capacity to love, even when love is demanding and hurts. Many people right now are offering their lives to provide healing and hope. Understandably when someone dies, there is deep sadness and grief. For those in the healing ministry they may feel they have failed. We need to remember that many saw Jesus’ death as failure. Through eyes of faith and hearts of love believers in every century, who have gone through all kinds of unimaginable sufferings, have dared to believe that as Scripture says, "Nothing can separate us, not even death, from the love of Jesus Christ." And Scripture also says to us that in, with, and through Christ nothing can ever ultimately separate us from one another. May you have a "Blessed Easter." And may you wish others a "Blessed Easter" through phone calls, handwritten letters, and, as backup, emails and texts. And although you may be keeping six feet apart from your loved ones, may you be closer than ever before in heart and soul!

THE EASTER OCTAVE

Sunday, April 12 - Sunday, April 19

Eastertime lasts fifty days: seven weeks of seven days (seven equals Biblical perfection) plus one day: perfection plus! Like an eight-day Jewish wedding, or a child who can’t bear to let go of Christmas, birthdays, and school vacation, the Church celebrates the Easter Octave: “the marriage

of heaven and earth,” as the Vigil calls Jesus’ resurrection; our new members’ baptismal rebirth; our renewal of baptismal vows; our hearts’ “divine vacation” (Latin vacare, “to be empty”), newfound time and space for love of God and neighbor. Make home an Easter garden! Adorn the dining table with a pillar candle (your “paschal candle”), a bowl full of water (ideally, from the parish’s baptismal font), a vase of flowers or bowl of sprouting grain with Easter eggs. Even non-singers can handle the three-fold Gospel Alleluia! Let that be your grace before meals, perhaps with a prayer recalling Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35): “Be known to us, Risen Lord Jesus, as you were to the first disciples, in your word, in the breaking of bread, and in everyone we meet.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING….

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had questions from parishioners about how much it costs to run the parish each week. With so many aspects of our parish impacting expenses from year to year and week to week, it is easier to answer the underlying question of “How much money do we depend on coming from the Offertory to run the parish each week?”

Simply put, we budgeted to receive $10,000 per week in our Offertory Collection. If we assume that those funds strictly support the church and rectory operations (thereby excluding the school), then your Offertory donations support the celebration of Mass, the work of the Commissions, PSR, salaries & benefits of the rectory staff, utilities & maintenance of the church & rectory, parish insurance, diocesan assessments (which is a percentage of every Offertory donation), and property taxes, among other smaller expenses.

Through March 29, 2020 (for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2019), the Offertory receipts were approximately $30,000 under budget. Please note that the budget calls for $20,000 in the Easter collection. Given that we do not yet know when we will be celebrating Mass together again, we expect this deficit to grow. Therefore, we are asking you to prayerfully consider how you might continue to support the parish during this period.

While Mass attendance has been suspended, please consider one of the following methods to continue your Offertory donations:

Sign up for electronic giving. This is accessed from the “Give” button on the lower right side of our Web site Home page (www.StVincentChurch.com).

Please note that the most cost effective way to use this service is to choose to give by bank draft (directly from your checking or savings account). The fees to the parish are much lower this way than if you use a credit card.

Mail your offering to the parish office at 164 W. Market Street, Akron, OH 44303.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Connie Pacanovsky, our parish Business Manager, at (330) 535-3135 ext. 102 or at [email protected].

“FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE”

SEEDS OF FAITH

There is a brevity, a certain terseness, in the scripture readings for Easter Sunday. Peter’s speech in Acts is built of direct, pointed sentences. Paul’s letters are based on straightforward creed-like statements. Even the Gospel story only briefly recounts what will turn out to be one of the most remarkable events in human history—the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Advertising agents call these encapsulated points of information “bullet points.” Scripture scholars call them kerygmata, or “kernels” of our faith. Actually, “kernels” or “seeds” are good terms for these statements, since throughout the Easter season, we will hear in the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of Paul, and the Gospel accounts of the days following the Resurrection exactly how these kerygmata began to flower, how they continued to grow through the life of the early church. May these Easter “seeds” of faith serve a similar purpose for us, too, so that the life of the Risen Christ will flourish in us and through our witness in the coming days. Copyright © J. S. Divine Mercy Image St. Faustina

********************************* Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a special day when “all the divine floodgates though which graces flow are opened.” He also said, “I desire the Feast of Mercy to be a refuge and shelter for all souls, especially poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open.” Our dearly beloved St. Pope John Paul II wrote his last and final statement, from his deathbed, on Divine Mercy. In it, he expressed to the world the importance to understand and accept the urgent message of Our Lord’s Divine Mercy.

********************************* Our Lord said to St. Faustina: “Encourage souls to say the Chaplet, which I have given you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the time of death….When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as a just Judge but as the Merciful Savior. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy….Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will.”

*********************************

APRIL 19, 2020 - The Second Sunday of Easter

St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church Due to the Coronavirus outbreak and mandates of social distancing, we are unable to gather for our planned Divine Mercy Sunday service. Please pray the Chaplet in your homes at 3 p.m. on Divine Mercy Sunday. Please continue to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet daily and especially during this crisis for the health and safety of us all. We pray for a swift end to the spread of COVID-19.

Chaplet of Divine Mercy 1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross,

1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and The Apostles Creed

2. Then on the Our Father beads say the following:

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

3. On the 10 Hail Mary beads say the following:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

(Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all five decades).

4. Conclude with (three times): Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One,

have mercy on us and on the whole world.

5. Closing Prayer (optional):

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

St. Pope John Paul II also instituted a plenary indulgence for Divine Mercy, in which one can make a good confession (within 20 days before or after), receive Holy Communion worthily on Divine Mercy Sunday (or the Vigil celebration), pray for the intentions of the Pope, and recite the chaplet at a Divine Mercy Sunday prayer service.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy can be said any time, but it is most effective if said during the 3pm hour to recall the hour of Jesus’ death on the cross. Jesus promised, “By this novena I will grant every possible grace to souls.” We ask that you begin to pray this daily. It is also traditionally recited as a novena, starting Good Friday, April 10, during the nine days before the Feast of Mercy, concluding on Saturday, April 18 of this year.
