Pastor Pool’s Sunday Bible StudyJames: Mandate & Mission

Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall

This month we finish our study of Habakkuk and transition into a new study on the Book of James. In the tradition of Proverbs, James, the brother of our Lord, writes this early epistle to explain the life of faith that follows the saving work of Christ. This study will be very practical. There is no cost. Bring your Bible or grab one off the shelf. No previous Bible class experience is necessary. This is a great time to jump in with us!

October 2: Habakkuk 3:7-13: Wrath and Creation October 9: Habakkuk 3:14-19: Waiting for the Day of Trouble October 16: James 1:1-4: Count It All Joy! October 23: James 1:5-15: Steadfast October 30: James 1:16-27: Slow to Speak

Where is Your Catechism?

Last month, I had the privilege of attending the Symposium at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. The conference theme was the use of the Catechism, From Font to Grave. For many of us, the Catechism was a book we used during the process leading up to Confirmation. We memorized it as a list of facts. We used it to get ready for the memory dump at questioning, and then we put it away in a box or on a shelf, never to be used again.

But Luther intended for the Catechism to be used for so much more. In fact, he used it daily throughout his adult life. He mastered it, as one masters musical scales or free throws in basketball. And this

is what I would like us to do with the Catechism. It belongs at our dinner tables, and on our nightstands, and in our hearts.

We aren’t learning facts about God in the Catechism, we are being introduced to God Himself. I would like us to have a lifelong passion for the contents of this book. Luther intended it to shape the whole life of a Christian. He suggested that the Catechism shapes you into a certain type of person granting you a new way of being in the world. It teaches us that life begins when we, “fear, love and trust in God above all things.”

So where is your Catechism? Do you know what it tells you about God? Do you know what it tells you about humanity and life? Do you know the grammar of the faith as revealed in the Catechism? Let me encourage you to read it again and again. Let the words sink in. Go deep. Meditate upon it. Know the Catechism so well that it informs everything that you are and everything that you do.

You can find out more at Lutheransforlife.org. Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Join us Sunday, October 9, as we talk about life as He has revealed it.

Altar Flowers

The new 2017 altar flower sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the narthex. Flowers may be placed on the altar on any Sunday except during Lent. This may be done in memory of someone, commemorating a birthday or anniversary, or as a service of love.

Hy-Vee and Flowers on 5th both have keys to St. John so if you are ordering flowers from them they should be able to pick up the vase liners and deliver the flowers when it is convenient for them. If you would like to use a different florist, you may stop by the church office the week before you are signed up for flowers and pick up a church key and the vase liners for the florist. Please ask the florist to leave the church key in the sacristy when they deliver the flowers.

Please contact the church office, 242-5588, by Thursday at Noon with your altar flower bulletin announcement, the florist who will be delivering the flowers, and whether or not you would like to keep the altar flowers after service or have them delivered to the sick or shut-in members of the congregation.

We are so excited to be discipling 11 of Jesus' little lambs in our preschool class this year!  Our new 4 hour schedule is working out great.  The children are making new friends and working hard on social skills and learning the rules and routines of school.  October brings books and activities involving farms and fall and the changes we will see all around us.  Along with that we will learn about several Old Testament heroes such as Noah, Jacob, Samuel, and David. We will talk about how God always loves and cares for us and what obedience looks like.

Clinton Lutheran HourRadio Broadcast

The Clinton Lutheran Hour has been coming into people’s homes, through KROS Radio broadcasts, since 1950.

For those who are shut-ins or are unable to come to church, this is a wonderful way to hear God’s word, through Pastor Pool, and be a part of the worship service.

The Radio Mission League sponsors these broadcasts each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. on KROS 1340 AM or 105.9 FM. Donations made from St. John congregation make this possible.

Would you like to assure the continuance of these broadcasts with a donation in your name or in memory of a loved one? A broadcast may be sponsored for a specific Sunday for $35.00 by contacting Janice Wheelock, 321-4536.

Darlene Paysen and Paul Wenzel record our services each week, Jeff Niebuhr is our announcer, Janice Wheelock schedules the broadcasts, and Sharon Brown is the treasurer.

Thanksgiving Baskets

The Board of Evangelism is coordinating Thanksgiving Baskets in November. The baskets will include a turkey or ham, provided by St. John, and other traditional non-perishable Thanksgiving foods, such as boxes of mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries and corn. They will go to people in the community who are in need of special help during this holiday season. We are limiting the number of baskets to 10.

What can you do to help?

1. Donate non-perishable food items;

2. Submit a name to the church office of a neighbor, coworker or friend to whom you would like to donate a basket (please include the number of family members);

3. Help assemble or deliver baskets the weekend before Thanksgiving.

The Executioner’s RedemptionBy

Rev. Timothy R. Carter

When Tim Carter started working at a prison to make money for college, he didn’t realize that he was signing away his life, his heart, and his very self to a career of brutal violence. In the midst of the darkness of prison life, the light of God’s word shone in front of him. Condemned inmates were brought to faith.

Rev. Carter participated in the executions of more than 150 inmates during his year of service. Today, he is the Care Ministry Pastor at Salem Lutheran Church in Tomball, Texas.
