Volleyball season is underway, and the season has been very successful so far. The high school lady rams volleyball team is lead by team captain, Monique Nesbitt & Yvonne Engelhardt. The middle school lady rams A team is lead by captain Alex Wood, with Hannah Moon leading the B team. Wins have been hard to achieve this season, but the games are still fun to watch regardless. The high school record is 3-11 with wins against Kickapoo Nation, and Flint Hills Christian twice. The Jr. lady rams have a better record of 4-6 with wins against Hope, Centre, Solomon, and Wakefield.

Our lady rams on both sides still are losing games, but I can tell they are out there working hard and giving it everything

they’ve got. One issue however, still remains unresolved. Fan support for home volleyball games is still very low, other than parents of the players and maybe five or six other people from St. X, the stands remain pretty desolate. Remember students, admission to all home games is absolutely free. So come out and support your mighty lady rams!

Basketball season is just around the corner, and it’s about time St. X has a team that’s worthy of giving their opponents a run for their money. Last year our team was very small, with only six players to play one full game. Needless to say, we were exhausted long before halftime rolled around. Personally I could tell you, we were mighty exhausted. So, this year with the number of students in the high school increasing, and a new coach, the hope for a winning season, may be one that could actually come true.

Eric Powers will be the coach this year, and in addition to the six players returning, coach Powers would like to see a larger team considering the

increase in students at the high school. Basketball is really a great sport anyone can play. You don’t have to be stronger or faster than the other team, as long as you’re smarter you’ll likely win every single time. Another addition to this year is new uniforms! (hopefully). So I challenge you to come out for the basketball team; we need more members.

Also, you hear me talk a lot about how fan support is low for the high school games. It’s true! Expect for player’s parents and maybe a few high schoolers, the stands remain empty. Student admission to all St. Xavier home games are free. So please, come out and support our rams!

Some parents and students are questioning whether St. Xavier students should have been able to watch Obama’s education speech that took place at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia on September 7,2009. His speech was focused on the students of America, and some students didn’t even know that he was making a speech. People argue that the students should have seen it. Many of our students and staff have opinions about how the whole mess of things should’ve been dealt with.

OPINIONS

“As an educator, it is my belief that decisions such

as these belong to parents. That being said, as a parent, I would have

given my children permission to watch

provided they were old enough to comprehend the message. I thought

President Obama’s speech was one of encouragement and

support for education.” -- Mrs. Kane

“It was a choice up to the school it didn’t effect me. Also it’s

common sense that it should have been later in the day

because it was during school and about our education.”

-- Dylan, 11th

“Yes we have the right to be able to watch it if we wanted to.” -- AJ, 10th

“I found it silly that a speech that focused on

education and excelling in life was presented during school - pulling kids out of Math and English classes”

-- Mrs. DeArmond

“St. Xavier students should have been able to watch the Obama speech

because he was not trying to force his “socialist” views on the younger

generation, he was simply telling kids the importance of an education. It is

funny because Bush and other presidents have given similar

addresses and there wasn’t a big controversy.” -- Jasmene,12th

VOICE OF THE PEOPLEBy Monique Nesbitt

Do you think that the children at St. Xavier should’ve been able to see Obama’s speech on the 7th?

Students Commemorate September 11th during School MassWhy do we celebrate September 11th? We

celebrate this special day to show our respect and love to the people who helped fight for our country and the people who died in the war and in the attack of the twin towers and the Pentagon. On the morning, of September 11th 2001 the hijackers crashed airplanes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. To remember this day, we had a special September 11th mass to honor the firefighters, police officers, and soldiers who make

our great nation what it is. The reason why I think this is such a big deal to us at St. Xavier is

because there are so many family members at our school who get deployed, and it effects

not only the teachers and staff, but also the students. I hope everyone else who doesn’t have a loved one who gets deployed shows sympathy and tenderness to the ones that do. It is

heartbreaking to see loved ones and family go away to help fight, but we know that they are

fighting for every person in the USA to keep freedom and pride alive.

Mrs. McConnell - 4th Grade

This past week for the fourth graders has been a busy one. We first went to the Water Festival at Council Grove Lake on Sept 17th. We went with the 5th graders and we all learned about water conservation, the water cycle, and how to protect our environment. Our favorite was the CSI investigation. We had to determine how a raccoon died by putting the clues together and interviewing suspects. We even

got to touch a real dead raccoon!!! (with gloves of course!) Then on Tuesday, September 22nd we went to Fort Riley to hear about the Human Body. Body Venture came to town to help us learn about our bodies. Body Venture is a 35 foot by 40

foot enclosed walk through exhibit representing the human body. Through out the exhibit we learned how to apply Power Panther's slogan EAT SMART. PLAY HARD. We would like to thank our parent volunteers who drove us to these events without their help we wouldn't been able to go...Thanks MOM!

Mrs. Corlett - Kindergarten

Apples, apples, apples!!! Kindergarten has been learning about apples lately! We have examined apples, sorted apples, graphed apples, drawnapples, counted apples, read about apples, drank applejuice, tasted different kinds of apples, and made pink applesauce. We learned about Johnny Appleseed and enjoyed surprising our wonderful Mass buddies with apple presents. Our favorite apple book was most definitely Ten Apples Up on Top by Theo LeSieg. The kids laughed so hard the first time, we had to read it again; then they made their own pictures of what they would looklike if they had 10 apples on top of their heads.

What's up next? Bones, bats, pumpkins, and leaves!

Mr. Korf - P.E./Health

The kindergarten and 1st/2nd grade classes have spent the last two weeks doing various activities and games with bean bags. They have particularly enjoyed playing bean bag tag this past week, which is similar to dodge ball but involves sliding bean bags on the court trying to eliminate the other team members by hitting them on the foot. The 3rd/4th grade class finished up a section on volleyball last week and enjoyed playing bean bag tag this week. The 5th, 6th & 7th grade classes are in their second week of playing volleyball and various volleyball type games. The 8th and 9th grade classes have been playing soccer (when weather allows) and also volleyball.

ST. XAVIER SCHOOL BIRTHDAY BOOK PROGRAM

Dear Parents, The St. Xavier School Library Birthday Book Program is one in which you can celebrate your child’s birthday in a special way and help our library collection continue to grow. For a donation of $5 your child may select a new book from the Birthday Box located in Mrs. Kane’s office. The inside front cover of the book will have his or her name and birth date inscribed on a bookplate. The birthday child also has the honor of being the first to check out the new book. Children have a special appreciation for the books they “select” to add to our library shelves. They enjoy sharing them with their classmates and teachers. These books will remain throughout all their years at St. Xavier School. This is a wonderful way to commemorate a very special occasion and to help our library maintain a high-quality collection. If you are interested in participating in the Birthday Book Program please contact Mrs. Kane @ 238-2841 or come see her between the hours of 9:00-3:30. Your generosity will benefit all of our students. Thank you for your participation and support of our school library. St. Xavier StudentsDemonstrate Stewardship

By Alex Davis & Monique Nesbitt

Students at St. X show stewardship every

single day, by living a stewardship way of life we

are each examples of the presence of GOD in our daily lives. Anyone can show stewardship. Here

at St. X we do many things, from maintenance day to adopting two Guatemalan teenagers Jorge

and Vilma. Also, many students help out with St.

Xavier sporting events. Many of our students help out at the nursing home, cleaning the school, and

helping with interact with age groups. Our teachers have stewardship too they help out

whenever they can. Stewardship is way to give

back to those who are less fortunate then

ourselves. Anyone can do it, all it takes is a little

effort and perseverance Go go out help the

needy, live as stewards, and walk with GOD!

Dear Parents:

Our school plans to implement the acclaimed Child Lures School Program. This personal safety program is currently used in over 1000 school systems nationwide and has been featured on national television shows, including Oprah, NBC Today Show, CNN, and 48 Hours.

The Child Lures School Program improves self-reliance, raises self-esteem and helps students master personal safety skills ~ all while reassuring them that most people are kind, safe, and committed to their well-being. Students learn to identify specific lures used in crimes against youngsters and how to employ proven prevention strategies. The Program also teaches Internet Safety, Drug Resistance, and School Violence Prevention.

We recognize that you may have some concerns as to whether or not the material used in the Child Lures School Program is appropriate for your child and in keeping with your beliefs. Therefore, we are sending home the booklet, Parents Guide: Parent Handbook to the Child Lures School Program and hope that you will read over the materials that we plan to present and give your permission for your child to attend this program.
