Ciao a tutti
Happy New Year to All of you. Again thanks to Mickey and her crew. It was a fantastic party. Everyone had a great time and the room looked beautiful. I would also like to thank Jay and Sandy for having the Texas Tournament here. Another exciting day! And finally a “BIG” thank you goes out to Linda Corrigan, a member and the promoter for “Putting on the Ritz” a variety show that was sold out. It had many entertainers and if you missed this she will be having another one in October with a whole new show, a night you won’t want to miss.
February is turning out to be just as exciting. On the 14th of February we have “Carnevale” - this is a sold out event. Jane and her crew will be making homemade Manicotti. Wow I can’t wait for this!
And on the 28th of February, DJ Tito will be here for our Latin Pub Night. This event is always packed so come early and put on your dancing shoes. It is $10.00 at the door and includes free appetizers.
Thank you all for coming to the General Membership Meeting. We did have a quorum and were able to vote on some things. Remember the next meeting is on February 18th . There are still some bylaw changes to be voted on so I hope to see you all there again. I want to welcome all of our new members. Thank you for joining the best club on the strip!
I did want to mention a few things before I end this message. As far as ticket sales go, please try and get them early. The longer you wait, you probably won’t get a seat. Be patient and please be nice to the girls that are selling them. This is not an easy job. Also please tip your servers at night - normal gratuity is 15-20%. Our Friday nights have been really busy and they and the kitchen staff are trying to get out the food as fast as they can. We don’t serve cafeteria style food and a lot of the entrées are made to order so again please be patient. The Board and I are doing everything to make this better and better. We are always in need of volunteers for cashiers and door greeters. You can get in touch with Donna DiAngelo if you are interested.
I am very proud and honored to be your President. Again, my door is always open to any of your concerns and remember “THIS IS OUR CLUB AND OUR FAMILY!
Grazie a tutti

Congratulations to Dominick Matra, #116, December's winner. He was up north when we pulled his number, but came back before New Years to get his $1,000.00. We are now in a new year and on POG 46. I have just finished collecting for that. I will start collecting for POG 47 on February 1st and will finish (I hope and pray) on March 15th. I know, it comes around quickly. It is $30.00 per quarter and thanks for those of you who have paid for 6 months or the whole of 2015, I appreciate it. If you didn't know you can pay in advance. Thanks too for my friends who help me all the time - I appreciate you. Jenny Martin

THE CARUSI ASSEMBLY HALL
While reading the biography of President Andrew Jackson, I learned he held his inaugural ball in the Carusi Assembly Hall. That aroused my interest. Who was Carusi that he should have a hall that bore his name? It is quite a story. It appears that the U.S. Marine Corp in its early stages of developing a band sought Italian musicians. Lt. Colonel Franklin Wharton recently received command of the Marines, and learned that Captain. John Hall was on his way back from Italy with Italian musicians and their families. The leader of the group was Gaetano Carusi. In his pursuit Captain Hall overspent. Much to the dismay of Lt. Col. Wharton who, upon learning what he spent, dispatched a letter saying that he was not willing to comply with what Captain Hall committed to the musicians. The letter never reached Captain Hall, for they were already at sea. When they arrived, September 19, 1805, in Washington Naval Yard, Wharton accepted the adults into the Marines Corp and the young people in the group, as trainees. Carusi did not find life in semi-rural Washington to his liking. In a recovered letter he complained, “We have arrived in a desert, in fact a place containing some two or three taverns, with a few scattered cottages or log huts called The City of Washington.”
The Carusis wanted to return to Italy; subsequently, the Marine Corp made accommodations for their return. When off the coast of Norfolk, the British halted the ship while looking for deserters; the confrontation escalated into a battle. The British fired upon the American ship killing three and causing damage. After the short battle the beleaguered Americans returned to Norfolk.
Gaetano, without much choice, settled and acquired a position conducting in the Baltimore Circus. After some months, he relocated to Philadelphia where he operated a music store. Gaetano applied to the U.S. government for funds to return to Italy. They were never forthcoming, for him and his wife Filippa died in 1846 in Philadelphia and are interred in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. They left five sons: Luigi, Eugenio, Ignazio, Samuele, and Nathaniel.
Luigi founded the Washington premiere dancing school with a large restaurant and dance hall in 1822. It was where the IRS building now stands on Pennsylvania Avenue. Many Presidents held their inaugural balls there, beginning with John Quincy Adams.
The immediate descendants of the Carusi family on up to the 1950s became professional people who contributed well to America’s development. I excerpted the above from October 2011 vol.XX1X, No.2 Poche Parole: The Italian Cultural Society of Washington D. C. http://www.italianculturalsociety.org/PocheParole.pocheparole11_10pdf. I found it best to look up Samuele Carusi and scroll until you find the url or web address mentioned, going to it directly doesn’t work. The article is written in Italian and English.
