Mrs. Jennifer Mayle brings to our program the understanding and gen-tleness needed to witness the faith to the little ones. Mrs. Jennifer Mayle’s first graders, attend Monday evenings from 5:15 pm to 6:30 pm. She is the lead teacher who has been with the program for eleven years. She is married to Steve and .had two grown children, Megan and Jaco and one daughter, Kay who is in college. The 6 stu-dents in the room are challenged to memorize the Hail Mary, the Our Father and the Glory Be. This is no small task for these little ones and to make the class fun, Mrs. Mayle infuses her lessons with a variety of projects. The concentration for Grade 1 is Baptism. The children get the information about their own baptisms through interviews with their par-ents and relatives. They share this with their classmates. They are asked to be able to tell where they were baptized and who their sponsors were. This is something they love to do.

And in the end of the second semester, these little ones will also be able to name the Seven Sacraments and tell, in their own words, the defini-tions and the reasons these sacraments are administered. Pretty impres-sive for these little ones!! During the Advent season, the students create a hand printed Advent wreath and the little ones take on the role of the people who were present at the first Christmas. The Advent wreaths are sent home for the entire Advent Season.

The curriculum also encompasses the students understanding that they are special in the eyes of their Creator and that He loved them so much that He died and rose to new life so that they may be new again. The goal is each child understanding that he or she is a real member of the parish community. Another goal is to remind the children that they can pray anytime and anyplace just like they would do when speaking to a friend. “We learn to treat everyone with respect even if they are different than you” is a goal that is also stressed with the first graders.

And I end with something I mention each year because I know the sig-nificance of being a peer with your former student. This brings me such joy and gratitude to be able to witness a student giving back to her Par-ish in such a loving and dedicated manner. I am proud and honored to work alongside Jennifer who was a tiny fifth grader in my class here at St. John the Evangelist School!! How many people over the course of their lives can share a ministry with their student and be able to enjoy and learn from them. Thanks, Jennifer for all you do.
