News from the Croucher Laboratory of Environmental Hydraulics

This summer Professor J.H.W. Lee has taken on two exchange/visiting students in their laboratory for thefirst time in a long time. Mr. P. Vikram Reddy is asummer trainee student from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, working here for 2 months togain internship experience to satisfy his degreerequirement. Mr. Yau Siu Chung is an outstandingHong Kong student from Duke, who will be studyinggraduate school in Princeton.

Mr. P. Vikram Reddy:

It was on the 9th of May when I first landed on foreign soil where I hadn’t known anyone before I arrived.

Life at the Hall of Residence of The University of Hong Kong is unique in many aspects and, in the company ofscores of Morrisonians, my life at the Hall was amazing.

Personally, I am fascinated by the range of experimentsthat are carried out at The Croucher Laboratory. I havel iked the working environment here and i t was aproductive learning experience for me in whatever task Ihad been asked to perform.

During my stay of two months in Hong Kong, I was fortunate enough to experience a fair amount of the way of life here. I was treated to meals in traditional Chinese restaurants and had the opportunity to visit exhibitionsbut of course, I spent a lot of my free time sightseeing.

I can truthfully say that my life in Hong Kong is one I shall remember for years to come with fond memories. Ihad a great time here-both at work and off work.

Finally, I would like to pay a word of thanks to ProfessorJ.H.W. Lee and his staff for making my Internship athoroughly enjoyable one.

Mr. Yau Siu Chung:

I have just finished my undergraduate studies in the United States and am going back to the States in September to pursue a PhD degree in civil engineering. Thanks to Professor Lee, this summer I have a precious opportunity to work in the hydraulics laboratory in HKU experiencing the research culture in Hong Kong. Having been working as a research assistant for about two months,I am impacted by the research environment in HKU and no longer disagree that Hong Kong is an ideal place to conduct scientific research. Despite a lack ofspace, the laboratory facilities here are definitively comparable to those in the top universities in the United States. Also both the technical and administrative staff members are remarkably supportive. More importantly, there are many projects, for example, the Yuen Long Bypass Floodway, which involve the collaborationsamong the un ivers i ty, indust ry and governmentdepar tments , p rov id ing amp le chances fo r theacademia to apply the state-of-the-art knowledge to thereal world. After working in HKU this summer, I stronglybelieve that it is highly possible for my hometown, HongKong, to develop into an international research hub. Asfor myself, I wholeheartedly wish to join this researchcommunity in my future.

Summer Camp 2006

The Department, together with the Civil EngineeringSociety, has organised a 5-day Summer Camp for highschool students in early July. This is the first ever summercamp organised by the Department and the purpose of theevent is for students to gain an in-depth knowledge aboutthe Civ i l Engineer ing profession and for them toexperience campus life.

Fourteen students from different local and UK highschools participated in the summer camp and theystayed at the Suen Chi Sun Hall during the period. TheDepartment arranged lectures, tutor ial act iv i t ies, laboratory tour, site visit and firm visit for them. TheCivil Engineering Society helped in organising meals, games, sharing sessions with current students and pastgraduates, and a high table dinner to show the fun partof the student l i fe at HKU. The students had anenjoyable and fruitful time at the University and theirenthusiastic response was most encouraging.

Special thanks to Professor L.G. Tham, Dr. R.K.L. Su, Professor S.C. Wong, Dr. B. Young, Dr. X.Y. Li, Dr. F.T.K. Thames Water pointed out that the Department of Civil Engineering at HKU is their only target in Asia forrecruiting foreign graduates. This is based on their mostsatisfactory experience with the high quality of our five graduates recruited during last years recruitmentexercise. Thames Water offers a very competitive salaryand benefits package as well as a comprehensive graduate development programme for all graduates. Hesaid Thames Water would continue to recruit civi lengineering graduates exclusively from our Department. In this year's recruitment exercise, 5 more graduates have taken up Thames Water 's offer to join theirGraduate Development Programme. Mr. Lee, Head ofDepartment, was extremely pleased that a globaleng ineer ing company l i ke Thames Water wou ldrecognise the excellent quality of our civil engineeringprogramme. The recruitment by Thames Water opensnew exciting career opportunities for our graduates. Headded that this was the first time in the history of ourDepartment, and probably of the Faculty of Engineeringthat foreign companies would hire our graduates forwork abroad.
