Connecting Churches to Change Our World

LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.

Protect Your Church from Cyber-Hackers!

In 2013, the number of internet breaches rose by 62% in comparison to the 2012 stats. 8 of the hacks exposed more than 10 million identities. In all, over 552 million identities were exposed.* So what can we do to protect our church from these infiltrations into our cyber-lives? The major attacks are caused by hackers uploading malware to a specific person within a group of people in a targeted organization. Their goal is to gain access to a victim’s computer documents/information. Spear Phishing uses e-mail to carry the malware through a link or attachment. Really good anti-virus programs protect against these phishing attacks. We recommend NOD32 from www.eset.com

What steps can you take to protect your church’s data?

Know where your sensitive data is stored. Limit access to these data files to only those who need it. Password-protect sensitive data. Back-up systems and files regularly – no less than monthly, preferably weekly. Keep your operating system up-to-date and install all security patches. Make sure your antivirus software updates regularly. Extremely sensitive materials should only be stored in stand-alone units with no internet connection. Do not allow files to be removed from the premises via flash drive, disk, etc. Make sure your server also has anti-virus and anti-malware protection. Let staff, employees, and volunteers with computer access, know about the dangers of cyber-espionage (Training is

available through eset.com). Don’t be duped into believing it can’t happen to us, or who would ever want to hack a church? The unprotected internet user is a fun challenge to a hacker! Internet Identity theft needs to be as serious as locking your car or putting money in a bank or safe. * Internet Security Threat Report 2014: Volume 19, Symantec Corporation and ClientLine: PSK, August 2014

PROTECT YOUR CHURCH FROM CYBER-HACKERS by Tracy Jaggers, D.Min.

CHURCH STARTING: HITTING A MOVING TARGET by Stewart Pickle, D.Min.

In looking at communities (people!) on which we focus our ministry, we often assume that we know what they are like. They are not like you and me—if they were, they would be in your wonderful church, lining up for hugs at greeting time. They do not know what you know and they do not know who you know. People do not stay still. Someone who moves from a community where they grew up to live in Houston, Dallas, or Atlanta will not be the same when they “come back home.” And that wonderful community will not be the same. Our Creator made us with a great capacity to adapt to different situations. Many of those situations SET US FREE from some good things and from some bad things. So how are you to reach people “just like you” except they have changed? One way is to NEVER ASSUME we know what they think. At the TEBA, we do focus group surveys—not the type of surveys that are really a means to present the Gospel. These are good but it does not tell you where in life that person is or what is really important to them. We have access to some special information about those residents, but even more important, by getting people to fill out these focus group surveys (or talk to you so you can fill them out), you can then design ministries and messages which connect to this moving target. It’s like that old saying: I am not what I was and I am not yet what I am going to be. Or as that great philosopher Popeye the Sailor Man said, “I yam what I yam.” Often Hispanic or Korean churches want to bring a pastor from their home country. They experience something worse than culture shock. They not only don’t understand “Americans;” they don’t even understand their “own people.” In Florida a recently arrived Korean Pastor was shocked that members of his church did not ask his permission before going on vacation. Church Planters are not the only ones who need to discover where the people really live socially and spiritually, we should all take the time to get to know the people in our community.

October is Clergy Appreciation Month and the perfect time to commit to praying for and encouraging our ministers on a regular basis. I am reminded of what Shirley Dobson, wife of the Rev. James Dobson of Focus on the Family stated, "Our pastors are on the front lines in the effort to defend our faith and our families. We must hold them before the Lord in prayer … I have a very tender heart for pastors, because they've been there for all of us when we have been in times of crisis—when we've been in times of suffering … we owe these pastors a debt of gratitude that we'll never be able to pay." God's word calls us to support our clergy. In 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 we are told: "And now, friends, we ask you to honor those leaders who work so hard for you, who have been given the responsibility of urging and guiding you along in your obedience. Overwhelm them with appreciation and love" Clergy Appreciation Month gives you the ability to take action and keep your pastor from becoming what H.B. London, Jr. has called an "endangered species." Let me share with you some ways you can honor your pastor and other resources you can look to for additional ideas.

19. A cake and ice cream social. 10. A note of appreciation. 11. Decorate your church in honor of your pastor. 12. Have each Sunday School class do something special. 13. Have a church appreciation banquet. Invite dignitaries and family to attend. 14. Have a testimony time in your service. 15. Announce this special day in your local newspaper. 16. Get local Government officials to recognize the event.

1. A greeting card shower. 2. An afternoon or evening social. 3. A bulletin board done with your pastor's history at the church. 4. Altar flowers. 5. Balloons. 6. A financial gift. 7. A surprise vacation. 8. Gift certificates to a store or restaurants.

Thank You!

Pauline and I are so very grateful for the churches of the TEBA allowing us to serve in this ministry role. Your remembrance of our 10 Year Ministry Anniversary was a further demonstration of the big heartedness of all the churches that make up the TEBA. Thank you for your support and generosity and we look forward to the days ahead as we serve together to grow churches and impact lostness in our communities.

I will be praying for you to have a great Pastor Appreciation time in your church family. The key to making this a successful event is your love and creativity!

In Kingdom service,
