Staff Connection... Parish Mission Statement George Green Parish Center 113 North Geneva Street Ithaca, NY 14850 *** 607/273-6121 The first reading this Sunday is telling us that God will prepare a banquet for us. Who would want to miss out at Gods banquet? Not me! In ancient times only royalties could afford to give banquets . They organized them and invited people to them for political reasons; often to make alliances, or to strengthen friendly ties. Banquets held to celebrate victories were especially elaborate. God, according to the prophet, is like a great king. He wants to celebrate a great victory, and for this he is preparing a great feast. The images with which Gods banquet is described strikes the minds of the people who are accustomed to eat only once a day. It will be a banquet of rich food, of fine wines, and plenty of meat. Who makes the list of the invited guests? This is unusual! All peoples of the earth. Enemies and those who hated each other will sit at the same table. But what enemy has been defeated? Death has been defeated forever and the Lord will wipe away every tears from every cheek. What kind of death has been defeated? Not physical death of course. All must die. What is spoken of here is anything that makes life not worth living: a meaningless life, failure, pain, sorrow hunger, dis- ease, marginalization, pain sorrow etc, whatever is non life giving will be eliminated. The Prophet Isaiah is clearly speaking of messianic times. At the coming of the Messiah every hope- less situation will be transformed. There will be great joy and happiness for all. It will be a time for feasting in the banquet of eternal kingdom. We are living in the post messianic times. Christ came to bring the Fathers love to the world. Easter was the moment of victory and triumph over death and sin. Sadness and sorrow do not make sense any more. Death has been destroyed forever. We have nothing left to fear. The parable is an invitation to reflect on the continuous invitation into the deeper appreciation of the Eucharist. There is no other banquet greater than the Eucharistic table of the Lord. Mass is a celebra- tion of a the greatest event that made us the children of God. The sacrificial death of our Lord has opened for us eternal life. The Eucharist challenges us to open our hearts to the poor, those who have been rejected by all. We should ask ourselves if the banquet has already begun why decline the invi- tation? Why the hatred, violence, wars, broken families, empty pews in the Church? The list is end- less. For sure the banquet is here, but there is much to be done by you and me. Bring your friend to the Feast of the Lamb! Asante sana. Mungu wetu wabarki! Fr.Chumo Sacraments Baptism: A preparaon session is required before the bapsm of your child. Have you ever felt worthless like you have no purpose Have you ever been challenged by another about Godrsquos existence Let me assure you that YOU are NOT AN ACCIDENT Edwin Conklin who was a student of Albert Einsteinrsquos said ldquoThe probability of life originating from accident is comparable to the probability of the Unabridged Dictionary resulting from an explo-sion in a printing factoryrdquo What he is saying is that there MUST be a creator and that YOU and me are not accidents We were created by God ON PURPOSE FOR A PURPOSE Only you can fulfill what God is asking of and dreaming for you So may you fulfill all the dreams that God dreams for you and may you fulfill the purpose that God has created you for
