Friday October 13th was a state wide in-service day

for Oregon. Food service directors of Sodexo

accounts throughout Oregon took advantage of that

and organized a fun, engaging and educational full

day event for our staff. This year we had six members

of the nutrition services department travel to Eugene

to participate in this opportunity!

The event kicked off Thursday night with a group

dinner and game night where attendees spent their

time relaxing (while someone else cooked) and

mingling with other nutrition services teams.

Frank Kitchen, a keynote speaker, started the training

discussing the importance of our “living FRESH!” and

following the dreams we harbor. The staff then

rotated through three breakout sessions: stress

management, a plate garnishing lab and conflict

management.

The team members who went loved this training

opportunity. This event allowed them to continue to

grow their expertise and gave them skills with which

to better care for our students!

This is just one of the great events that we have

planned this year to fulfill our annual Professional

Standards requirements!

Community: STOP Hunger

As the leading provider of Quality of Life Services, fighting hunger is the focus of Sodexo’s community service efforts. As part of our Better Tomorrow commitments, the Stop Hunger program mobilizes entire Sodexo communities, including employees, consumers, clients and suppliers are joining forces to make a difference and end hunger.

Since 1996, our company has supported programs that provide hunger relief to those in need with a particular focus on children and families. In 1999, Sodexo created the non-profit Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation to extend our company's commitment to fighting hunger, with the mission of working to ensure that every child in the United States, especially those most at-risk, grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead a healthy, productive life. November brings the holidays and so

this month our nutrition corner is all

about the super food cranberries!

Cranberries are unlike any other fruit in

the world. From Cape Cod to

Washington State, the cranberry has

played a role in holiday culture, health

and wellness for years. It contains

unique health benefits with a

refreshing and tart taste making it a

family favorite.

Cranberries are full of phytonutrients

that offer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

and anti-cancer health benefits.

Cranberries are also a very good

source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and

manganese, as well as a good source

of vitamin E, vitamin K, copper and

pantothenic acid.

So add some cranberries to your

families diet and try them on top of a

fresh salad, in a tasty turkey wrap or

even baked into something sweet!

Nutrition

The data above displays the average, daily participation (ADP) for the month of October 2017 at all

schools compared against the ADP of October 2016. During October we saw an overall decrease in meals

at breakfast of 3% and at lunch we experienced a decrease of 8%.

During November and December we will be performing site visits to see how we can help increase meal

counts during breakfast and lunch. We are also hoping to introduce ‘meal coupons’ to help encourage stu-

dents who don’t eat school meals to give them a try!

Diversity & Inclusion:

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage month and is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

We are going to be celebrating by honoring Alaskan culture! We will be serving Alaskan Pollock in the cafeteria. This is the perfect time for our students to learn about the state of Alaska and enjoy a healthy fish lunch that is full of protein and vitamins!

Alaskan Pollock, a speckled fish in the cod family, is typically found in the North Pacific Ocean and caught frequently in the Eastern Bering Sea. These fish are said to make up the largest population of any fish species in the United States. Having an excellent diet, Alaskan Pollock are rich in protein, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids – making them an excellent choice to serve in the cafeteria. To best preserve the nutritious contents found in these delicious fish, they are often frozen and ultimately served as breaded and non-breaded fillets.

Sodexo has an exciting partnership with the Alaska Seafood

Marketing Institute (ASMI) and the Genuine Alaska Pollock

Producers (GAPP). This partnership inspired us to design

healthy, nutrient-rich recipes that students will love like the New

Orleans-inspired classic Po’ Boy or the classic Pollock Fish

Tacos, we know that Alaskan Pollock is sure to reel students in!

National Family Week: November 19-25, 2017 National Family Week is an annual celebration observed in the United States during the week of Thanksgiving, which this year is November 19th through the 25th. National Family week was first proclaimed by Ronald Reagan on November 19, 1987 and is organized by the Alliance for Children and Families.

This week is designed to build community connections and honor those who strengthen families through local events and activities. National Family Week presents a great opportunity for families and communities to connect through events and activities that can be fun and linked to learning.

What can you do to participate in National Family Week? Two of our favorite suggestions are shopping lists and story telling! Shopping lists: plan your recipes for the holidays and write a shopping list with your child sitting next to you. Provide paper and pencil so the child makes his or her own list. Then, take it to the grocery store and use it as you shop to show that listed words have meaning.

Story Telling: Encourage all family members to tell stories about your family history. Have the oldest member tell a story about a major family event, and then ask the youngest members to re-tell it. This is a great way to build vocabulary, language and analytical skills.

Just have fun with this time and use it to connect with your family!

Canby Nutrition Services Department Sodexo is the on-site solutions provider for the Canby School District’s

sign an agreement with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (William

J. Clinton Foundation and American Heart Association) to implement

school snack guidelines that limit sodium, fat and sugar? Additionally,

Sodexo is a leading partner of the former First Lady Michelle Obama’s

Let’s Move initiative to end childhood obesity in this generation. We are

committed to provide students, staff and community with a healthy and

Future Chefs

After last years’ excitement of our

local Future Chef contestant

winning the national title; we’re

thrilled to again host a Future Chefs

event! The idea behind this event is

to help educate the kids in healthy

eating habits.

This year Future Chefs will be

hosted in March (tentatively

scheduled for Friday the 16th). This

year we are asking that students

submit their favorite healthy Asian

Fusion food!

Judging will be based on the

following criteria: originality, kid

friendly, ease of preparation,

healthy attributes, plate

presentation and taste!

A flyer will be distributed shortly

describing the event and the

timeline.

So keep your

eyes open for

more

information

about this

exciting

event!
