Staff NotesJune 25, 1971

This formidable apparatus is not used to exterminate mosquitoes, clean concrete floors, or control riots. Instead, it is perhaps the

most effective mobile fire extinguisher that has yet been devised for

laboratory use.

The unit was delivered to NCAR about six weeks ago. Since then,

under the supervision of Tony Lamb of our plant security group, NCAR

firefighters have been trained in its use.

The purpose of the new unit is to enable our people to extinguish

laboratory fires faster and more effectively than before and with less

cleanup after the fire has been put out. The unit can completely fill

a large room with gaseous CO2 in minutes, to smother any fire and keep itfrom spreading. In the past, NCAR relied on hand-held fire extinguishersthat can produce 2.3 kg (5 lbs.) to 11.3 kg (25 lbs.) -- only enoughto extinguish small fires at short distances. The new extinguisher willhold 340 kg (750 lbs.) Of CO2 and will deliver 136 kg (300 lbs.) per minuteat a range of 7.6 m (25 feet).

Our photograph shows (from left to right) Tony Lamb, Harold Smithand Duane Williams operating the extinguisher. According to Tony, several high fire hazard laboratories will be outfitted with ceilingdiffusers and quick-couplers to which the big extinguisher can beattached. Thus, in these critical labs a fire could be extinguishedwithout even entering the area.

The FAL summer computer seminar series will be on model developmentand will begin on Tuesday, June 29 (see Calendar Notes). These lectureson computer models developed at NCAR will be given by various staffmembers and visitors. Topics will include discussion of equations used andsome of the logistics of a large-scale model, as well as specific modelssuch as the Great Lakes model and the general circulation model.

Anyone who is interested in more information concerning this seminarseries can contact Jeanne Adams in room 5 or on extension 523.

Two "footnotes" to this week's Calendar Notes section:

The special noon movie to be shown Tuesday, June 29, Dropsonde:A Research Projec, is available to all NCAR staff members from theInformation Office. Check the film's synopsis in' Calendar Notes, andif you are interested in borrowing the film or wish further details, contact Diane Johnson or Vicki Macgregor in room 135, or call on extension260 or 258.

An Ampex reel-to-reel tape recorder, NSF #11182, Model #890,Serial #24405, has been misplaced. If you know the whereabouts ofthis machine, please contact Randi Opsahl, extension 279.

According to Frank Plyley of the NCAR Construction Planning andDesign department, the construction work presently being done on thebuilding will probably continue until the beginning of September. NCARemployees can expect the present hammering to end by the beginning ormiddle of next week, and two more periods of jackhammering will subsequentlytake place: one stretch of work on the fountain plaza, which will takefrom one to two weeks; and another on the tree plaza, which will take aboutthe same amount of time. The construction crew is taking the top layerof concrete up so that they can install new waterproofing material. The concrete will then be repoured, and hopefully a good seal will result.

And now, from those people who brought you the Christmas PartyMemo and other marvelous entertainments:

The Employee Activities Committee has purchased two sets ofhorseshoes and stakes for staff use here at NCAR. This equipment iskept at the loading dock, and the pitching courts are located at theloading dock end of the parking lot on the edge of the mesa. All NCARstaff members are free to use this equipment.

Another EAC announcement: Watch for information about an EAC-sponsored Jaycee Chuckwagon which will be held on August 19 at the topof Flagstaff Mountain, with entertainment provided by a barbershopensemble.

And a reminder from the EAC: Staff members are reminded thatElitch's has been reserved again this year for the evening of July 7,from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. There will be free refreshments, free

admission and parking, and discount rides. For tickets, contact thefollowing EAC representatives: Sue Atkinson--ASP; Rose Bridgewater--ADMIN; Gary Emerson--HAO; Joyce Teter--LAS; Gael Sullivan--DIR; FrankRobitaille--NHRE; and John Dee--FAL.

Some corrections and additions on the room and telephone changeslisted in last week's Staff Notes:

Sandi Hoff's correct extension number is 508.

Rose Bridgewater's extension number is the same as before hermove: extension 354.

And Donna Befus and Fred Roecker are now in room 251, and theirextensions are 516 and 515, respectively.
