The CCC (Catholic Communication Campaign) funds supports projects as diverse as television, radio, social media, podcasts, and print media to more effec-tively use technology and media in spreading the gospel message. Through grants funded by the CCC, more people are hearing about and joining in faith, worship, and witness.

Retired Diocesan Priests

Collection

Each year when we celebrate the feast of Pentecost we have a collec-tion for our Dioceses Retired Priests. This collection helps them meet their immediate retirement and health care needs. Please not only give thanks for all that we have received from these priests but also give gen-erously to this collection today.

Pentecost celebrated the ‘finale’ and high-point of the whole Easter cele-bration. Christ was sent by the Father out of God’s love for the world… ‘God so loved the world that he sent his only Son…that all who would believe in him might have eternal life’. Jesus demonstrated God’s perfect love in his death on the cross… ‘There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend’. Jesus willingly took on our human condition to reveal in a very concrete way God’s love for us. But also Jesus revealed the fullness of God’s love in all that he did and taught…through his passion, death, resurrection and ascension. He did not aban-don us or leave us orphaned. He promised that he would give us another Advo-cate…the Paraclete Through the gift of the Holy Spirit…the Third Person of the Trinity…Christ would be made present in us. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit…Christ would be leading, guiding, and empowering us in the fulfillment of the mission he had entrusted to us. He called us and now he sends us… ‘Go and make disciples of all the nations’. Pentecost is considered the ‘birthday’ of the Church as it is constituted, commis-sioned, and sent to carry on the mission of Christ in the world. We are to grow as disciples in our knowledge and love of the Lord…and witness to the world in order to bring them to faith and life in God. This Sunday is the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity and the Gospel again reminds us of the mystery of three persons in one God…with the Holy Spirit playing an essential part in God’s self revelation. All three of the per-sons of the Most Holy Trinity are mentioned in the Gospel for today’s Mass…the Son (Jesus) sending the Spirit who will reveal everything the Father has given to the Son. To counteract a false understanding (which we call the Arian heresy) of the true nature of God as Three Divine Persons…distinct and perfectly one…the Church made it very clear in the Nicene Creed what the Church believes and teaches. We hear echoed ‘I believe in One God…the Father Almighty…I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ…I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life’. God wants to reveal himself to us and he does so in deepest love… ‘Jesus is the face of the Fa-ther’s mercy’. Let us make our act of faith clear and real…just as the dismissal at Mass bids us… ‘Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life’. Congratulations and a BIG Thank you…to Ellen Bednara as she enters a new phase of her life retiring from her position as our parish secretary. Ellen has worked in our parish office for 26 years, many of them as receptionist and bulletin editor, in addition to scheduling servers and other liturgical ministries, and coordinating logis-tics of so many meetings and gatherings scattered throughout our parish campus. She has faced many challenges and helped many, many people. Ellen didn’t want a big public party so we celebrated in a quiet way with her last week. I am sure that she will welcome your expressions of gratitude anytime you might desire to pass them on to her. All the best…and may the Lord fill your life with joy and good health! 8

Summer Office Hours The school office will begin summer hours on May 19th. The office will be closed on June 24th and July 29th. Some days May be added later. If you have a question, call & leave a msg. (344-5450, Ext.201) or send a Fast Di-rect to LouAnne. The office will be open from 9:00am to Noon. Call 344-5450 for an appointment at any other time. Principal’s Notes: We received word that we will not be able to offer sports physicals this year. Remember that all students have to have a current sports physical to begin practice. Students that need a school physical (K and 6th) do not need a sports physical. Don’t forget to sign up to work a shift at the SSPP Picnic. I would like to en-courage all of our school families to get involved. Remember that the parish gives each family a monetary subsidy to cover the cost to educate our stu-dents. The Picnic Committee has worked very hard to make this event more family centered. It should be lots of fun.

The next Liturgy of the Word will be Sunday, May 29: 10:30am Laura Tosi K and 1st 10:30am Kathy Cook 2nd & 3rd Matthew Cook

Trinity Sunday Getting to Know the Trinity As difficult as it is to understand the Holy Trinity, I am amazed that Jesus even bothered to tell us about the Fa-ther, the Spirit, and himself. As if his own life, his teachings about God's love, his miracles, his death and resur-rection were not enough, he told us something about God that we never would have imagined: There are three Persons in one God. It is also some-thing we cannot completely compre-hend. So instead of trying to explain it, let's look at what it means for us be-lievers. One thing it shows is that God wants to be known by us. Since theologians and spiritual writers have been helping us do that for almost two thousand years, it may not seem like a big deal. But in ancient times, people expected their gods to be mysterious and hid-den. Many cultures thought that you could control a spirit or god if you knew its name. So knowing anything about the inner life of a god would be huge. But our God is the only God, whom no one can control. God sees us not as a threat but as beloved children. Just as a couple falling in love wants to know everything about each other, so God wants to be known by those whom God loves. That leads to my second point. The Trinity also shows us that "God is love" (1 John 4:16) because the three Persons are united in one God. The Persons of the Trinity already love each other perfectly, so God shares that love with us. God calls us to be united in love with God and with each other. Remember that God knows us perfectly and still loves us. How many of us would want another person to know everything about us? Yet know-ing our weaknesses and our sins does not hurt God's love for us. On the con-trary, our weaknesses allow God to help us by answering our prayers or inspiring someone to come to our as-sistance. God permits us to sin, know-ing that we can experience divine love in forgiveness. We may not be able to grasp the full meaning of the Holy Trin-ity, but knowing that God shares this with faithful people helps us to love God even more. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Trinity Sunday

May 22, 2016

The Trinity In making Creole reci-pes, that is authentic New Orleans food, eve-ry cook knows “the trini-ty”, celery, onions & green pepper. They are

essential. They are the starting point. Properly prepared, they blend as one, yet retain distinctive flavor. So too, God. Triune. Blended yet distinct (the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 202 states it this way; “only one true God...three persons indeed, but one essence, substance or nature entirely simple”).

As Christians we have never truly been faithful to the teachings of Je-sus. We haven’t forgiven our ene-mies. We haven’t turned the other check We haven’t lived out the deep challenges in the gospel. But we have been faithful in one great way—we have kept the Eucharist going...and that will, in the end, save us. What is the meaning of the Eu-charist? Why is it so central to our faith? How do we live out a spirituali-ty of the Eucharist?

All Are Welcome!

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Lord Jesus, Fill the hearts and minds of your young people with the power of the Holy Spirit, so that with courage and generosity they might answer your call to serve the church in the priesthood and religious life. Give parents the faith, love and spirit of sacrifice which will inspire them to rejoice when a child of theirs is called to a church vocation. May the intercession of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph, your Holy Family, help us to pray: “Let not my will, but yours be done. Amen

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: Do I “really” love Jesus Christ? Is my spir-itual life alive and “fed”?

ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS:

Loving someone (God) means know-ing them well by spending time in their company...prayer. My spiritual life must be fed with prayer and spir-itual reading...the Scriptures, lives of Saints, etc. Otherwise, spiritual dea th IS THE RESULT. God wishes the best for us...Himself and heaven!

May 21—22, 2016

Parish Ministries Extend Activities to Celebrate Year of Mercy We continue to look at our parish ministries which are focus-

ing on the Works of Mercy and enhancing their ongoing ac-

tivities as part of the Year of Mercy. We will feature their sto-

ries throughout the year.

The Power of One Idea: Answering God’s Call to Serve Every Thursday, the Ss. Peter and Paul Mending Ministry serves those attending the SOS Soup Kitchen at St. John’s Church by mending clothing. This new ministry was devel-oped by Judy Thompson. “I say the Jabez Prayer (which asks God to help you see how you can serve others) frequently,” Judy says. “I was watching a news report from New York about a man who rolled his sewing machine around the city and mended needy people’s clothing. I said, ‘I can do that.’” Trying to figure out how to do that in Collinsville was a chal-lenge. She thought about the Township Office (no room) and tried the Senior Center (not much activity). Then she thought of the SOS Soup Kitchen. Marty Wiegers and Rita Heimann joined Judy in the new ministry. The ministry is growing and people are volunteering to sup-port then in any ways that are needed. “You just need to listen for where God is calling you, recognize it, then just do it,” says Judy. The Corporal Works of Mercy

Clothe the Naked

The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how

we should treat all oth-

ers, as if they were

Christ in disguise. They

"are charitable actions

by which we help our

neighbors in their bodily

needs" (USCCA). They

respond to the basic

needs of humanity as we

journey together

through this life.

The Prayer of

Jabez

And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying:

“Oh that You would

bless me indeed, And enlarge my territo-

ry, That Your hand would

be with me, And that You would keep me from evil,

That I may not cause pain.”

So God granted him what he requested.
