“Hope is there for us, but we must seize it” This Sunday we hear the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead in the Gospel of St. John. This reading is a reminder to us that resurrection is ongoing. The concept of dying and rising is something we all need to do every day. Struggling to overcome our daily temptations and our sinful tendencies all makes part of our valiant effort toward holi-ness, which we Catholic’s traditionally call “Fighting the good fight.” Much of this has to do with relationships, our relationship with God, with those close to us, and with all those with whom we may come in contact. Now during Lent is a time when we need to give these relationships a particular prominence. Love conquers all. When Lazarus emerges from the tomb, he is “tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth.” The question for us today is are we bound in some ways? Are there bad habits or unhealthy relationships, or other personal issues that bind us that we should be trying to free ourselves from? Lent is a time of reflection and discernment. While still alive we have the opportunity to discern and change what it is that keeps us from the new life offered by Christ. The thing is that while God’s mercy and eternal glory is offered to all, not all choose to live a life worthy of God’s love. Only Jesus can give us this new life; this is what we celebrate at Easter. Hope is there for us, but we must seize it. Pax Christi, Fr. Kenneth Nobrega

Del Escritorio del P. Kenneth Nobrega Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma 2 de abril de 2017

Desde el abismo de mis pecados clamo a ti;

Señor, escucha mi clamor. — Salmo 130(129):1

Pax Christi, P. Kenneth Nobrega

Light A Votive Candle Catholics rely greatly on prayer, as we acknowledge and seek peace and refuge in conversation with God, or ask friends to offer prayers for us. What comfort is ob-tained in the knowledge that someone dear is offering prayers to the Father on our behalf! It is this same motivation, which prompts devout souls to burn candles in the church, or even before holy images in their own homes. Prayer, practiced as a virtue, is a continual uplifting of the heart to and union with God. While we carry on with our daily duties, the candle we have lit burns faithfully as a constant prayer to God, reminding of our love and our petitions. As long as the flame is glowing we can imagine there are angels pre-senting at the Throne of God, the prayers of the entire Church for our intention. Hence, the pious custom of lighting vigil candles is a highly commendable and most efficacious means of obtaining the choicest blessings for ourselves and for loved ones. A votive candle is an offering made to God through the intercession of the Saints and so it should not be con-sidered a normal retail “purchase” as other secular items we tend to buy. Recently we increased our candle dona-tion request to $5.00 - It had been 14 years (2003) since our last candle donation increase. Please note that candles not obtained directly from St. Joseph the Worker Church are forbidden due to insurance policies. Any outside candle found in the church building will be removed and thrown away. Thank you, for your understanding.
