TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s still months away, but parish min-isters, especially if they are involved in the catechumenate, have their eyes on Lent and the Easter Triduum. Until fairly recent times, the last few days before Easter were shaped by an awareness of the Passion, but the faithful were left to their own devices about how to engage with these mysteries. A thousand years ago, the Easter Vigil as a solemn and central moment of initiation had vanished. By the early 1950s it was a minor moment in parish life, celebrated on Holy Saturday morning, usually with only the priests and a handful of invited guests. Most people understood it as necessary only for blessing the paschal candle and preparing the Easter water. People who were children during World War II some-times remember that the weekly noontime test of the air-raid sirens on Holy Saturday signaled the end of Lent. Today, of course, we see Holy Satur-day as entirely within the paschal fast, and hardly the time for children to be tearing through the plastic grass looking for jelly beans and chocolate eggs. These memories point to a total collapse of the once-central liturgies of the Christian year. This impov-erishment of the liturgy was mostly an ac-cident of history. The root cause was the loss of Lent as a time focused on the final formation of catechumens for the Easter sacraments. By 1880, scholars began to piece together a vision of what once had been, and slowly, at first in a handful of monasteries in Europe, pieces of the tradi-tion were rediscovered and celebrated. —Rev. Music Ministry Stewardship - A Way of Life

Reflecting on God’s Word Imagine a large group of travelers, lost in the midst of a dense forest on a starless black night. They cannot see the path; they cannot even see each other. Little by little they wander in different directions, trying desperately to find their way forward through the immense trees, all the while spreading further and further apart. Suddenly a bright white lantern shines from the edge of the forest. Their fear flees with the darkness. As they head toward the light they rejoin one another and rejoice to discover the one way out of the forest. The imagery of light in the darkness threads its way through the Sundays of Ordinary Time between Christ-mas and Lent. It reminds us that the Light of the World, whose dawning we celebrated during the Advent/Christmas season, is the same light of Christ whose flame will purify and enlighten us during Lent and enkindle the fire of the Holy Spirit in us during the fifty days of Easter. This week our first reading likens the salvation of the “District of the Gentiles” to light dispelling darkness, an-guish, and gloom. Matthew’s Gospel characterizes Jesus as a light arising in “Galilee of the Gentiles,” beckoning the fishermen to join together in following him along the way. Paul exhorts us to remain united on the one way that follows the light of our one and only Lord, Jesus Christ. —Virginia Stillwell Copyright © 2013, World Library Publications. All rights re-served.

Parish Nurse Tip — Diabetes – In the United States, more than 25 million people are living with diabetes and 79 million more are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Over time, if it’s not controlled, type 2 diabetes can cause serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, and blindness. You may be at risk for type 2 diabetes if you are overweight, exercise less than 3 times a week, over 45 years old, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. In addition, type 2 diabetes increases if you are African American, Latino, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian American, Pacific Islander or have a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes.

Salesian Sunday Reflection

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 22, 2017 In today’s Gospel Jesus calls several fishermen to come and follow Him. St. Fran-cis de Sales comments on their calling, and also ours, to follow Our Savior: When Our Savior tells His Apostles that He has chosen them, He makes no excep-tion. Even Judas was called although he misused his freedom, and rejected the means God gave him. We can be sure that when God calls someone to embrace Christianity, to be single or married, to be a religious, priest or bishop, God gives each person all the necessary help to attain sanctity in his or her vocation. Yet, even after their conversion, some of the Apostles were subject to some imper-fections, like St. Peter who failed miserably by denying the Lord. Likewise, we see that it is impossible to overcome in a day all the bad habits acquired by caring poorly for our spiritual health. Nonetheless, Our Savior wants you to serve Him just as you are, both by prayer and by actions suited to your state and stage in life. Once you are convinced that you must serve God where you are, and go on doing what you are doing, have a tender affection for your state in life. Be of good heart; cultivate your vineyard with divine love. As you set out on your daily tasks, place yourself in the hands of God, who desires to help you succeed in your affairs. Believe that God will do what is best for you, provided that, on your part, you employ a gentle diligence. Do not be surprised if the fruits of your labor are slow to appear. If you do the work of God patiently, your labor will not be in vain. Our Lord, who makes houses for the snails and tur-tles, will lead you well; let Him do it. We must walk faithfully in the way of our Lord, and remain in peace, as much in the winter of sterility as in the autumn of fruitfulness. Walk joyously, then, in your vocation with confidence in Divine Prov-idence.

LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an at-las to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today’s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus’ future ministry in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ulti-mately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liber-ation from both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the “yoke”).

As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equat-ing their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of “Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today’s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The theme is “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus begins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today: Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
