Record of School Achievement (ROSA)

Students choosing to leave school before the completion of their HSC will receive the NSW Record of School Achievement (ROSA).

The ROSA:

• is a record of achievement for students who leave school prior to receiving their HSC

• reports results of moderated, schoolbased assessment

• is available when a student leaves school any time after they complete Year 10

• is cumulative and recognise a student’s achievements until the point they leave school

• shows a result for all courses completed in Year 10 and Year 11

• reliably compares students across NSW

• give students the option to take online literacy and numeracy tests

• offers the ability to record a student’s extracurricular achievements.

To qualify for the award of a Record of School Achievement, a student must have:

attended a government school, an accredited nongovernment school or recognised school outside NSW

undertaken and completed courses of study that satisfy the Board’s curriculum and assessment requirements for the Record

of School Achievement

complied with any other regulations or requirements (such as attendance) imposed by the Minister or the Board and

completed Year 10

Time of issue

It is proposed that the NSW Record of School Achievement not be a ‘one point in time’ document, but rather, a record of a student’s

achievements up until the time they choose to leave school.

Reporting on literacy and numeracy

Online literacy and numeracy tests are available to school leavers.

Students who leave school prior to the HSC have the option to take online literacy and numeracy tests two times during the year.

Nyngan High School Stage 5 Assessment Schedule 2015 Page 3

The Record of Achievement may look like the sample below:

Nyngan High School Stage 5 Assessment Schedule 2015 Page 4

A Common Grade Scale will be used for all subjects studied.

Grading Board Endorsed and Content Endorsed Courses

The Common Grade Scale is to be used to assign ROSA grades for students in Stage 5 courses that do not have subject-specific

course performance descriptors. These include Board Endorsed Courses and Content Endorsed Courses such as Physical Activity or

task & Sports Studies and Marine & Aquaculture Technology.

The Common Grade Scale describes performance at each of five grade levels.

A The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the

student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations.

B The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills.

In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.

C The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of

competence in the processes and skills.

D The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the

processes and skills.

E The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence

in some of the processes and skills.

Nyngan High School Curriculum Pattern 2015 Students will study the following subjects in Stage 5:

STAGE 5 ASSESSMENT POLICY

Each faculty has its own assessment policy developed within the guidelines as detailed in the specific Performance Descriptors for

each subject. The subject assessment policy will be one which measures a student’s level of achievement in syllabus outcomes at a

particular time.

The level of achievement of the Performance Descriptors will be measured through a range of instruments best suited to a particular

subject eg, class tests, examinations, research assignments, oral/aural exercises, fieldwork, library projects etc.

Assessment policies for all faculties in Nyngan High School have the following common principles:

There are a number of scheduled assessment tasks but all work completed in class will contribute to the final level of

achievement

Students will be advised of the nature, relative importance and timing of each assessment task ( see individual subject

schedules)

All assessment tasks will be constructed to assess the knowledge and skills outcomes of the syllabus

Students will be given feedback on each assessment task and the marks awarded for the task

Students are assessed in all subjects over Years 9-10. The final grade will be determined as late as possible in Year 10 and

will reflect a student’s level of achievement at that time

Students who study 100hr courses during either Year 9 and Year 10 will have the grades attained recorded on their Record of

School Achievement

Submission of hand in assessment tasks must be made during the class period on the due date to the class teacher, where the

staff member will acknowledge receipt by initialling the class list

Students are required to complete all scheduled assessment tasks. If a student is unable to complete a task, he/she should

notify the school as soon as possible and alternative arrangements will be made

For an unexpected absence on the day of an assessment task, the student’s parents/caregivers must contact the school on the

morning of and prior to the task taking place. On return to school the student must report to the subject Head Teacher or their

class teacher to discuss requirements regarding the missed assessment task.

Students who fail to complete assessment tasks will be sent a Non-completion (N) warning letter

Nyngan High School Stage 5 Assessment Schedule 2015 Page 6

STUDENTS WHO SUBMIT TASKS LATE

Students who submit tasks after the due date without excuse will lose 20% of the total marks for that task per school day.

One day late - 20% of total task marks deducted

Two days late - 40% of total task marks deducted

Three days late - 60% of total task marks deducted

Four days late - 80% of total task marks deducted

Five days late - 100% of total task marks deducted (but task must be completed)

eg – If you submit your task 3 days after the date due with no acceptable excuse then if the task is allocated 10 marks you will have 6

marks deducted from your score for that task.
