SEASON 69 ISSUE 2 NOVEMBER 2016

Stagenotes

The male cast of Donkeys’ Years is a barrel of laughs!

Donkeys’ Years opens November 11!Men Behaving drunkenly

Now that I’m done joking, I would like to sincerely thank LTVB for allowing us to bring this hilarious script to life. Although this script is early Frayn — and thus not as intricate as, say, Noises Off — it is still an effective distillation of the pretentiousness of top ranking universities. There’s real social satire in this writing, even if it quickly morphs into door slamming and cross-dressing. The plot itself essentially just revolves around a bunch of guys getting drunk and dealing with an epically confusing morning after. Oh, and there's a lady in there too. BBy the time this show opens, we will have voted for a new President of the United States. That’s terrifying. All I can say — without getting too political — is that this show’s Alpha Male is a blustery, classist politician and that I hope he never becomes President. Whether you voted for four Donkey Years or for four Elephant Years, I hope you can enjoy everything that these Donkeys’ Years have to offer."

When I heard LTVB needed a comedian to direct the second show of their season, I immediately assumed the show was, like … Avenue Q. Even after learning Donkeys’ Years was a British farce and then deciding to direct it, I was still very caught off guard by just how British and farcical it was. Coming from a world of improv and sketch, my comfort zone for comedy is a little messier — and a little more contemporary — than Michael Frayn’s.

DDespite this, my cast and crew have spent the past two months tirelessly making this show as true to form as possible. I have not told them this yet, but my goal is to make this show SO British and SO farcical that if Michael Frayn were to y out to see it AT THIS VERY MOMENT, then he would write LTVB a good Yelp review.

2016 - 2017 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Stepping on a stage for his rst theatrical production (1968) at 13, David has been involved in theatre ever since. Born and raised in Ohio (Go Buckeyes!) he was involved in band, orchestra, choir, and theatre during his high school years. David worked with several community theatres in his home state in all areas of stagecraft, and attended Illinois Wesleyan University as a voice major. A professional actor since 1980, he was a mainstay per-fformer for the Akron's Children Theatre for three (3) years prior to moving to Virginia Beach in 1984 to work for the now defunct Performing Arts Unit at the Kempsville Recreation Center. While there he directed several shows and also appeared on stage for their production of Fiddler on the Roof as Tevye (one of his signa-ture roles).

He has been involved in the local theatre scene since moving here, and has worked with Virginia Stage Company, The Little Theatre of Virginia Beach, the Dinner Theatre that was at Found-ers Inn, The Peninsula Community Theatre, Showstoppers Pro-ductions in Williamsburg, The Generic Theater (former Board member), and the Little Theatre of Portsmouth (they are current-ly inactive, he's Vice President). As an actor he has done four (4) North American or National Tours cast in New York, and has appeared in several television shows (shot locally for national cable).

He's proud to be a new member of the Board of Directors for LTVB, and looks forward to a successful season with everybody. And this holiday season, should you happen to be in Norfolk, come see him as Father Christmas at Dicken's Christmas Towne next to Nauticus!
