STAHMANN PECANS’ EXPERIENCE AND LIFETIME LEGACY

2

On any given summer, day historical Highway 28 is a beautiful arbor of green thanks to the miles of pecan trees. Throughout the seasons, these wonderful trees offer a stunning visual display from the beautiful filigree of green in the season to the rich browns of fall and the stately sentinel views of winter. In other words, the Pecan Trees at Stahmann Farms are gorgeous in all seasons.

The Beginning of Stahmann Pecans – Pecan Growers

If you had driven through the same area 78 years ago, the scene would have been much different. It was little more than a barren wasteland before Mr. W.J. Stahmann and his son purchased the land and saw its wonderful potential. The Stah-manns began that day so long ago to become pecan growers and have developed this area in the Mesilla Valley just north of El Paso into a thing of beauty and functionality.

The Care of Pecan Trees is an Art

Another thing that has changed significantly over the years is the art of pe-can harvesting. Today, the process is highly mecha-nized and occurs in three distinct stages. The first step of the process is to clear the pecan fields of branches, debris, weeds and grass. Next pecan growers will bring in sophis-ticated tree shakers that will vibrate the trees result-ing in all the nuts, dry

leaves and branches falling to the ground. The final step is a process of sweeping the pecans into rows between the trees and picking the nuts, including pecan pieces, off the ground. Lighter materials such as sticks and leaves are blown back to the field while heavier rocks and pecans wind up in a cart.

What Pecan Trees We Harvest

On Stahmann Farms, there are two principal va-rieties of pecans, the Bradley and the Western Schley. Both of these varieties yield high quality soft-shelled pecans. A mature pecan-bearing tree on the farm will be, on average, about fifty years old. Stahmann Farms orchard contains ap-proximately 180,000 trees with a breakdown of about 48 trees per acre with a spacing of thirty-by-thirty (feet). Currently Stahmann Farms pro-duces 8-10 million pounds of pecans and pecan pieces annually.

Folks frequently ask why Stahmanns uses “Estate Grown” as the company tagline. In fact, estate grown is an increasingly rare business model among pecan growers – you encounter it per-haps more among vineyards than with pecans. The term means that we take care of the entire production process here on our farm. For example, we don’t grow the pecans and then send them somewhere else for shelling or other processing. All of the pecans are grown and shelled on our 3200 acre farm in the fer-tile Mesilla Valley of Southern New Mexico, along the Rio Grande River. We do not outsource any part of the process: we control growing, harvesting, shelling, packaging and shipping. We serve the wholesale, industrial and commercial markets for pecans. This means that we sell to organizations that buy bulk pecans for use in making food products and in packaging pecans for retail sale. We ship to customers around the World.

At Stahmanns we take pride in being one of the leading pecan growers in the world. Our success as a family-operated business since 1932 stems from this continuity of ownership and the ac-companying stability it provides in our operations. Keep in mind, many of our trees are as old as the farm, and in addition to the Stahmann family, several of our employees have been with us through at least three generations. We have cared for our trees and our employees for over 80 years now. So we know how to grow pecans and manage the end-to-end process – Estate Grown Pecans.

Our bulk pecans are known for their quality and excellent taste, which come from the care we give to our trees through the shell-ing and packaging process, including careful monitoring of mois-ture content of the shelled pecans – which can affect taste.

Our third party certifications give testimony to our quality, and sig-nify to the consumer that a recognized authority has examined our product and processes and has approved our pecans under the organization’s standards.

Our harvest season usually begins in October and continues through December. The actual start and end times depend on the growing conditions we have had during the previous spring and summer, and harvest sometimes continues into the next year. However, we are operational all year round tending our trees with pruning, disease and insect control, and other activi-ties that will ensure a good harvest for the following year. To en-sure uniform quality of pecans year-to-year, in addition to rain-water, we irrigate our trees through a series of canals that run from the Rio Grande River.
