BISoN ThE BENEFITS

RAPID CoNSTRuCTIoNBison precast staircases are delivered to site ready for

installation and can speed up construction schedules to

provide safe and immediate routes between floors under

construction. Once hoisted into place, the precast stair

flight is suitably protected and ready for use.

PRoVEN QuALITY AT ECoNoMIC CoSTExceptional quality is built into each precast stair structure

to ensure the most appropriate, efficient and cost-effective

product solution. Precast stairs reduce the requirement for

complex on-site shuttering and minimise the risk of delays

that can occur with site-poured concrete.

STANDARD MouLDS wITh VERSATILE DESIGNManufactured in precision steel, the precast stair moulds

offer any riser height, combined with a range of tread

dimensions to provide a customised stair design from

standard moulds.

EASE oF INSTALLATIoNBison’s lifting pins are cast into the precast concrete during

manufacture in the factory, making on-site installation safer,

easier and quicker.

DIMENSIoNAL REQuIREMENTS

The dimensional requirements for all staircases are set out in the Building Regulations Approved Document K. The Building

Regulations require that flights of stairs should have all the same rise and going within the dimensional requirements shown below.

The requirements for the three categories of stair considered in the Building Regulations Approved Document K and that for

disabled people in Approved Document M are as follows:

hEADRooM

Bison precast staircases conform to all current regulations and can accommodate most architectural layouts. Design and

manufacture is carried out in accordance with BS 8110: 1997.

Generally stairs are cast in engineered steel moulds giving a Type ‘A’ finish*. Landings can be cast integral with the stair

flights or separate in order to achieve the optimum staircase construction.

When balustrades are required, it is recommended that fixings for these are drilled on site. A minimum of 50mm should be

allowed between the edge of the concrete and the edge of any pocket or fixing.

Bison are specialists in staircase design and you are invited to discuss requirements with us so that the most efficient and

economic staircase design can be achieved.

1.0 SCoPE oF ThE SPECIFICATIoN

1.01 Relates to: This specification covers the design, manufacture

and associated site work of the following types of stairs:-

• ReinforcedConcretestairs

1.02 Description of stairs

• Theprecaststairsaredesignedandmanufacturedas

reinforced precast stairs.

2.0 MATERIALS

2.01 Standards: All materials are to be in accordance with the

appropriate British Standard and this specification.

2.02 Concrete: The design strengths of concrete used in the

design and manufacture of Bison units is as follows:-

Reinforced Design

• UltimateConcreteStrengthisaminimumof50N/sq.mm.

2.03 Admixture: Concrete used is of a self compacting nature,

and therefore does contain some additives. This additive is

to provide adequate suspension in our mix to achieve the self

levelling nature of the concrete.

2.04 Reinforcement: Reinforcement for reinforced precast stairs

is generally high yield, high bond bars complying with the

requirements of BS 4449:2005 and is detailed in accordance

with BS 4466 unless specified.

3.0 DESIGN

3.01 Code: The design of Bison units is in accordance with the

requirements and recommendations of BS 8110:1997

“The Structural Use of Concrete”.

3.02 Service Class: The design of Bison reinforced concrete stair

units is to Serviceability classification, Class 3 with a limiting

crack width of 0.1mm, and RC stair units to 0.3mm crack

width.

3.03 Durability: The standard Bison stair is designed to comply

with the durability requirements of BS8500:2006.

3.04 Fire: Fire resistance is based upon the tabulated data

contained within BS 8110 : Part 2 Section 4. Sections are

available for fire periods of 1 hour or 2 hours without the

addition of further finishes. This period of fire resistance may

be further enhanced by the application of appropriate finishes.

3.05 Horizontal and Vertical Ties: Ties necessary to satisfy the

requirements for accidental damage should be specified

by the Engineer with the responsibility for the design of the

overall structure in accordance with the relevant Codes of

Practice. To accommodate tie details, a C40 structural topping

may be required in lieu of screed zones. To comply with class

2B structures and greater, generally stairs are tied at bearing

ends as per Bison standard details.

4.0 MANuFACTuRE

4.01 Method of Manufacture: Bison standard precast stairs are

manufactured in precision engineered steel moulds United

Kingdom patent numbers 2193922 and 2217359. Other stairs

to suit specialist requirements may be made using ramp

moulds with timber stringers and risers.

4.02 Mould: The design of the mould is such that any riser

height within the range of 150mm to 210mm is available.

Alternative tread dimensions of 250mm, 275mm and 305mm

are available. These are fixed dimensions, as is the angle

of the receding riser (all Bison standard moulds have a

nominal 25mm recede). Thus the going varies very slightly

with the riser dimension as shown in the table. To achieve

the economic benefits in offering Bison standard precast

staircases, it is assumed that minor modifications can be

made to the stairwell dimensions to accommodate the

standard units.

4.03 Dimensions: Bison Standard staircases may be manufactured

up to 2.40m wide. Special widths may be provided using ramp

moulds which are of timber manufacture. The maximum length

of the Bison standard staircase is 11.00m. However the length

of the stair may be restricted due to the weight considerations

during manufacture and this is set at maximum of 10 tonnes.

4.04 Permitted Deviations: Cross-sectional tolerances are within

the limits set out in clause 6.2.8.3 of BS 8110:1997. Erection

tolerances are as per BS5606.

4.05 Balustrade Fixings: It is recommended that these are

drilled on site by others to suit individual requirements. A

minimum dimension of 50mm, 75mm preferred, should

be allowed between the edge of a pocket of fixing and the

edge of the concrete and to a maximum depth of 100mm

4.06 Lifting points: These will be provided in the factory as

proprietary inserts to be made good on site by others.

4.07 Finishes: The Bison Standard staircase is cast on its

side, all surfaces with the exception of one string are from

an engineered steel mould face giving excellent quality.

Concrete surface finish to soffit, treads, riser and one

string is to a Type A finish (minimum)* as described in

clause 6.2.7.3 of BS8110:1997. The treads and risers are

suitable for the direct application of carpet or tiles or for a

screed finish applied with a suitable bonding agent.

4.08 Landings: Bison can supply flights with attached

landings and these must have a minimum of 50mm sand/

cement screed added so as to allow for manufacturing

tolerances. Due to this requirement, the top step contains

a recess thus creating a screed stop – see Bison general

arrangement drawings. Separate reinforced landings are

also available. These also are to be used in conjunction

with a screed again to allow for manufacturing tolerances

and to cover up the support angle cast in to the Bison

flights.

4.09 Angles: Purpose made angles may be provided at

the end of flights or stairs to bear onto other concrete

members such as landings or beams. The design of these

is subject to strict limits and may require that additional

support is provided.

5.0 SITE woRk

5.01 Standard: All site work is to be undertaken in accordance

with the best current practice and Health & Safety

legislation. For further advice reference should be made

to the “Code of Practice for the Safe Erection of Precast

Concrete Flooring”.

5.02 Bearings: Level and structurally adequate bearings for

Bison precast units are to be provided by others. These

should generally be 100mm for concrete and masonry

and a minimum of 75mm for steelwork, but subject to the

requirements of clause 5.2.3 of BS 8110:1997.

5.03 Temporary Bearings/Propping: Unless the design

specifically allows for units to seat onto temporary

bearings (i.e. head trees and bearers, etc.) this practice

shall be avoided wherever possible. In cases where such

measures are unavoidable, fixing must not progress until

permission has been obtained from a competent technical

authority within the Bison organisation. We shall specify

on our working drawings details and duration of any

temporary propping that may be required.

5.04 Holes and Cutouts: Small holes up to 60mm diameter

may be drilled on site. Larger holes may be cut subject to

the design capacity of the staircase.

5.05 Lifting sockets: All sockets formed for lifting purposes

are to be filled and made good by others, when erection

is complete.

5.05 Soffit fixings: Several fast and cost effective proprietary

systems are available for direct fixing to concrete and we

shall be pleased to offer recommendations on request.

6.0 QuALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

6.01 QMS Reference: Bison are members of the BSI

Registered Firm Scheme for Quality Management Systems

to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 for the design, manufacture and

installation of precast products.

6.02 Scope: Membership of the scheme ensures that

all processes relevant to the design, manufacture

and installation of precast products, are subject to

independent review and approval by the British Standards

Institution.

*Other finishes available on request.

TRAILASAFE®

Trailasafe® is designed to prevent or mitigate injuries

resulting from falls from trailer decks. Comprising

synthetic mesh suspended from a series of brackets

housing support arms, the system arrests the fall of

personnel, absorbing the energy of their descent and

ensuring their safety. Fully demountable, the system can

be stored within the vehicle or at the unloading point.

ThE BISoN AIR MATThe Bison Air Mat system has been tested by the BRE

and approved by the HSE. The Bison Air Mat system

comprises a series of interconnected and interlinked

mats available in a wide range of standard sizes. Using

a combination of modules they will accommodate

almost any floor area. Where the edges of an area to be

protected are open, or have large vertical voids that may

pose the hazard of “roll-off” fall to a lower area, special

parapet and corner mats can be provided.

hoLE CoVERSVoids such as service holes, formed in precast floor units

are trip hazards and have the potential to cause serious

injuries. Bison’s solution is the Hole Filler: a strong yet

slimlined product which is suitable for most holes.

The yellow, anti-slip cover is fully reusable and comes in

two sizes, 250mm or 350mm square. Each may be either

screwed down or fitted without the need for power tools,

by spreading the unit legs, locking it into position.

Health and Safety is a major concern for Bison, and we have developed a range of methods and systems which help to

ensure that anyone using Bison products can do so with minimal risk to themselves or others.

Modern Methods of Construction encompasses a variety of

off-site building techniques. MMC can help to improve build

quality, reduce time and waste on site and raise safety levels.

At Bison, we have developed leading technology, enabling us

to supply wall panel, stadia and frame components.

PART L AND ThE ENERGY PERFoRMANCE oF BuILDINGS

In use, Bison precast concrete offers thermal capacity which

can be used for active Fabric Energy Storage (FES), that

can reduce carbon emissions from a building by up to 50%

by reducing the need for air conditioning. Using FES makes

good long-term financial sense for occupants who benefit

from reduced energy bills.

PART A

The Building Regulations Part A, December 2004, introduced

a system of classification of buildings to reflect the risk of

disproportionate collapse probabilities. Bison’s in-house

experts can offer advice on the details required for each of

the main frame options related to reinforced concrete stairs.

PART k

Approved Document Part K of The Building Regulations

2000 calls for the protection of falls, collisions and

impacts of stairs, ladders and ramps, with particular

focus of the design, construction and use of such

products. As market leaders in the precast concrete

industry, Bison has unrivalled experience in producing

both standard and bespoke products that work to deliver

the requirements of industry legislation.

Bison’s in-house design experts

are up to speed on all governing

legislation to ensure compliant

products are manufactured using

modern methods of construction.
