TNBR role

• Provide technical advisory services to TNB group

• Becomes the Coordinating body to execute carbon footprint project development through R&D funding

– Conduct carbon footprint assessment for G,T,D.

– Identify operational boundary and sources of emissions.

– Establishment of baseline on carbon footprint for TNB.

– Analysis of carbon footprint and developing strategies/mitigation measure in GHG reduction.

INTRODUCTION

• In 2010, TNB corporate planning has requested Generation Division to embark on the estimation of carbon footprint from its power plants.

• TNB Research was asked to conduct this study to preliminary assess the carbon inventory and develop the methodology to determine the carbon footprint for all TNB power plant.

The main objectives of this project are as follows: 1. To do the preliminary assessment of Carbon Inventory for

TNB Thermal Power Plants

2. To recommend the most suitable methodology of measuring Carbon Footprint for TNB power plants based on International accepted practices

How To Measure?

The following internationally-recognised guidelines are used:

• GHG Protocol, and

• 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories

Emission Scopes

• Emissions are categorised by ‘scope’ as defined in the GHG Protocol:

– Scope 1, direct emissions

– Scope 2, indirect emissions

– Scope 3, other indirect emissions

Scope 1 – Direct Emissions

• From sources that are owned or controlled by the company

Key steps in calculating CO2 Emissions

Steps Description

Step 1 Collect data on the quantity of fuel combusted on a volume, mass or energy basis

Step 2 If necessary, collect data on the fuel's density and/or calorific/heating value and convert fuel data to a common volume, mass, or energy content basis. The fuel consumption data from Step 1 and the carbon content data from Step 2 should be a common basis before calculating emissions.

Step 3 Estimate carbon content of each of the fuels combusted.

Step 4 Collect data to determine oxidation fraction.

Step 5 Check to ensure that all units are consistent and converted correctly across parameters and facilities.

Step 6 Estimate CO2 emissions

GHG Estimation Formula

• The most common approach used to calculate GHG emissions is to apply documented emission factors to known activity data

GHG Emissions = Activity Data x Emission Factor x GWP

•The GHG estimations will be calculated in the unit of tCO2e

Carbon Footprint Assessment for TNB

• TNB needs to develop a carbon footprint assessment.

• This will allow TNB to have an accurate assessment of GHG emissions from its operational activities.

Overall Research Methodology

1. Literature review (Articles, journals etc.) and Technical Discussion.

2. Operational boundary and sources of emission setting

3. Conduct CF Assessment: Data analysis and results

4. Develop database for GHG monitoring tool for CF

• Literature review on distribution CF • Review of IPCC 2006, CDM methodologies,

GHG Protocol and ISO standard • Establish methodology for CF assessment

• Identification of boundary • Identification of sources of emissions i.e.

mobile combustion, fugitive emissions and others

• Data collection • Data input and analysis • Data validation/verification • Results – Comparison with other companies,

countries and etc.

5. Recommendations for mitigation potentials and improvement of CF

6. Awareness on results and findings

Conclusion

• TNB needs to develop a carbon footprint assessment. On the other hand, TNB’s would have a complete data set on CO2 or GHG emissions which enables the company to track the GHG emissions and manage its GHG programs.

• This will allow TNB to have an accurate assessment of GHG emissions from its operational activities.
