Head teacher update Welcome to the June edition of the Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi stakeholder newsletter. I was delighted so many of

you attended the two meetings which we held in Solva and Bro Dewi last month, where you had the

opportunity to meet my leadership team and the Chair of Governors, David Halse. I was also pleased that PCC

officers were on hand to provide an update regarding the building’s programme and transport arrangements.

As we enter the final half term of the existing three schools, I am filled with pride and optimism for the future

as we enter a brand new era of through school faith based education for generations to come. I also look

forward to meeting many of you at school events over the coming months as we approach the summer

holiday.

Please find a list of further progress below:

You are all invited to attend the next round of stakeholder meetings at Ysgol Bro Dewi on Monday 18th

June at 4.30pm, and Ysgol Solfach on Thursday 21st June at 4.30pm. There will be further opportunity to

raise questions with the relevant member of staff/PCC Officer.

There will be two transition days for our prospective pupils . The first will be on Friday 22nd June for

Years 5 & 6 at the Dewi Campus (formally Ysgol Dewi Sant). The final day will be held on Monday 25th

June for Year 6 , also at the Dewi Campus. Further details will be issued shortly.

There will be a transition day for current Solva and Bro Dewi pupils on Friday 8th and Friday 22nd June.

Curriculum

The curriculum at Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi will be closely linked to us being a through school with education

being seamless from 3 to 16.

There are four educational phases within the school underpinned by the four key purposes outlined in

the Successful Futures document.

We will endeavour to create:

Ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives

Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work

Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world , ready to be citizens of Wales and the world

healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

The Primary Phase (nursery, reception and years 1 to 6) will be overseen by Mrs D Smith.

The Secondary Phase (years 6 to 11) will be overseen by Mrs R Thomas.

Over a two week period, the 22 pupils in year six will spend three days at the Dewi Campus (Dewi Sant)

accessing specialist science, technology and PE facilities. They will be accompanied by an ELSA trained

LSA at all times.

Transport

PCC will automatically re-issue bus passes to existing pupils of the secondary phase who were

in receipt of a pass prior the Milward decant. New pupils will be issued with bus passes prior

to the start of the new term beginning in September.

PCC have written to pupils currently attending Ysgol Bro Dewi and Ysgol Solfach who are eligi-

ble for free transport to ask them to complete an application form to confirm their transport

requirements. They have also written to current year 6 pupils from feeder catchment schools

starting in year 7 and who are eligible for transport.

Mrs R Thomas has made contact with the parents/carers of several pre-school pupils and a

working group has been established. The map below shows the catchment areas for Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi, identifying the secondary

phase, primary phase and 8 mile faith boundaries.

The diagram below shows how all buildings are interlinked within the one school. Pupils within reception,

nursery, years 1 to 5 within the primary phase and years 8 to 9 within the secondary phase will remain on

fixed sites. However, there will be times when year 6, 7, 10 and 11 will be located across two sites in order

to complement and enhance their learning experiences.

Staffing

We are delighted to report that Mr Mike Reed has been promoted to deputy head of Ysgol Uwchradd

Aberteifi. Mr Anthony Jones has also been promoted to become the new head of languages, literacy

and communication at Haverfordwest High. We would like to wish them well in their new schools.

Gareth Jones has been appointed as Head of Science and Technology, Abbie Jones as teacher of

history and humanities, Christopher Butcher as teacher of mathematics, Emily Forrest as teacher of

Welsh and English, Liz Tamilia as teacher of English, Kieran Barclay as teacher of humanities, PE and

Welsh Baccalaureate and Jacob Jones as foundation phase teacher.

An updated leadership staffing structure can be found on the next page.

Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi as a Church in Wales VA School

Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi will be the Church in Wales’ first 3-16 VA school, and a first for the Diocese of St.

Davids. As a faith school, YPD will have a distinct Christian ethos which will be developed over the

coming years, from regular whole school/site/year group worship and forging stronger links with the

Anglican churches and clergy within the catchment area, to maintaining our vision as a Christian

school community and assessing how that vision impacts upon pupil achievement, wellbeing and the

overall character of the school. Whilst YPD will be distinctively Christian, it is not unlikely that pupils

from different faith backgrounds and those of no faith will opt to attend and it will be our duty and a

key part of our ethos, to be open and inclusive.

Uniform Recycling Project The communities of Solva and St Davids will be coming together to organise a collection of all the old

school uniforms from Ysgol Bro Dewi, Ysgol Solfach and Ysgol Dewi Sant. It is hoped that this collection will either be sent to either Lesotho, children in war-torn parts of the

world or be recycled. Various options are currently being explored. In July, at the very end of the academic year there will be an opportunity for you to drop off your old

school clothing at a couple of venues in St Davids and Solva. We will be collecting any items of school clothing – jumpers cardigans, polo shirts, school pinafores,

skirts and trousers. Please note we will not be collecting any shoes. Further details about specific collection points and times will be sent out shortly.

If you have any queries regarding uniform, please contact Katherine Pearce at

[email protected]

Physical Education Uniform Years 1 -5:

Pupils will be expected to wear black shorts with a yellow or black polo shirt.

Training shoes must also be worn with jogging/tracksuit bottoms and a black sweatshirt as additional

options.

Pupils may wish to purchase the school PE kit from the Gilbert website but this is not compulsory at

this age group.

Years 6 – 11:

Pupils MUST wear school PE kit.

This can be purchased online from the Gilbert website whose link is on the Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi Web-

site or from the local school uniform suppliers.

Chair of Governors Update

As we move into the second half of the summer term, whether we are children/young people,

parents, carers, school staff or governors, we are all very aware that September is approaching fast!

There are many seemingly small but important details that we will all have on our minds. It is really

important that all of us take the opportunity to share concerns about any details with the current

school staff on the three sites or Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi governors or indeed any relevant person with

whom we feel comfortable. The stakeholder meetings later in the month are another opportunity

and I look forward to seeing a good turn-out.

Much has been achieved since the last newsletter was circulated. Governors and Senior Staff have

been working closely together and will continue to do so over the next few months. Many of the

overarching matters in relation to Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi have been successfully completed. These

include admission processes, staffing appointments, curriculum matters , locations for all pupils

alongside the Pre-school initiatives, to name but a few. Budgetary considerations have inevitably

been a crucial and complicated part of all our discussions.

Two additional Working-Groups have been established by Governors to fully address two very

important fundamentals for our new School. Firstly, the Church in Wales faith ethos which will

impact in every aspect of our life within the new school and secondly ,the consolidation of the

growth in the Welsh language and culture which has been progressing so well in recent years.

The Temporary Governing Body was tasked to establish the new school and oversee its beginning. Its

job will conclude by October/November 2018 at the latest. Work establishing the brand new Ysgol

Penrhyn Dewi Governing Body will begin immediately the new school year begins.

Whilst we may all be looking forward to our school holidays, there is a great deal more to be

achieved before July 20th !
