South Australian trainers are set to
buck the downcast mood of the state’s
thoroughbred sector by backing the
Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale
as high-profile industry players also converge on
the “city of churches” for the two-day auction,
which gets underway this morning.
Magic Millions managing director Barry
Bowditch believes this year’s 401-lot Book 1
catalogue, often considered a hunting ground
for traders looking to find stock for the ready to
run market, is the strongest in recent memory
and the company has attracted a significant
pool of investors to take advantage of the
increased quality.
Magic Millions was forced to reject a number
of entries for the Adelaide sale due to the quantity
of horses received for the auction, which has led
to optimism among vendors about a competitive
buying bench. Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Booker to be offeredat Chairman’s SaleOakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m)-winning mare
Booker (Written Tycoon) is the latest high-
profile mare to be catalogued for Inglis’ The
Chairman’s Sale in May. The five-year-old mare,
who is part-owned by well-known Victorian
owners Barrie and Midge Griffiths and partners,
will be offered unreserved at Riverside Stables
on May 8. She joins the likes of fellow Group 1
winner In Her Time (Time Thief), Unforgotten
(Fastnet Rock) and Noire (Foxwedge) as early
entries for Inglis’ elite breeding stock sale. “I’ve
always bought and raced fillies and I think of the
13 Group 1 winners Midge and I have had, which
I think 12 were fillies, she’s probably the nicest
type we’ve had, Mannerism and the others were
good sorts but Booker is just outstanding,” Barrie
Griffiths said. Booker, who could be aimed at the
T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) this campaign
for new trainer Gerald Ryan, is the first foal out
of Noondie (Flying Spur) who was sold at last
year’s Chairman’s Sale to Mitchell Bloodstock
for $600,000. Morning Briefing page 6 >>

Adelaide Yearling Sale (Day 1)

That depth was in part helped by
interstate vendors supporting the sale such as Hunter Valley farms Bhima
Thoroughbreds, Kitchwin Hills and Glastonbury Farms, as well as a big
representation from Victorian breeders.
“This year we had a huge amount of horses entered for this sale and
given that the catalogue has gone up in numbers, but it has also gone up
hugely in quality,” Bowditch told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“We’ve knocked back more
horses than we ever have in the
past, so that all bodes well that
we’ve got the right product here
and hopefully the buyers are on
plenty of horses that they can
take home and do a job with.”
While optimistic local
trainers and owners will back
the sale, which has produced
graduates such as this season’s
Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)
winner Warning (Declaration
Of War) and high-class mare
Viddora (I Am Invincible), Bowditch says interstate
and international participation will be pivotal to
the depth of the buying bench.
Last year’s Book 1 sale averaged $39,661 and
sold to a top of $250,000, while the clearance rate
closed at 79 per cent.
“A lot of the local trainers have been out and about looking at yearlings
and wanting to get business done to support the local industry,” he said.
“But this sale relies heavily on our incoming buyer program with
interstate and international bidders.
“We have done our best to get as many here as possible and I felt the
vibe around the grounds on Sunday was busy and there’s a good amount
of people in town.”
Trade market buyers will also be scouting for opportunities at the
Adelaide sale.
“There’s a good lot of breeze-up consignors in town and picking the
eyes out of the colts,” Bowditch added.
“It’s like no other sale, the good horses will pick themselves
and bidding will be strong on them and hopefully we can hold our
clearance rate and pick our average up like it has been at other sales in
recent times.”

| 4 | Brought to you by Follow us @anz_news: click here
Kambula re-enters yearling marketOne South Australian vendor to embrace the Adelaide sale is David
Toole’s Kambula Stud, which has a draft of 14 yearlings on offer, after
changing the farm’s direction this year.
Toole has been best-known in recent times for selling his foal crop
as weanlings at the Gold Coast each year, but yesterday he revealed that
Kambula Stud had altered its focus due to “various factors”, one being
wanting to re-engage in the camaraderie a yearling auction brings.
He expects his reintroduction to the Adelaide sale to be a fruitful one.
“We have been selling foals for five years and I’ve absolutely loved it,
but we’ve been missing selling yearlings. I’ve had five years off and I’m
looking forward to getting back into it,” said Toole, whose Kambula Stud
had 19 mares covered last breeding season.
“The inspections have been very, very good and it is looking like it is
going to be a very good sale for everyone here.
“I don’t think we’ve seen a buying bench so strong in Adelaide judging
by the people on the grounds.”
Among Kambula Stud’s draft are yearlings by Deep Field (Northern
Meteor), Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), American Pharoah (Pioneerof
The Nile) and three lots by Star Witness (Starcraft), the sire of yesterday’s
Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic (1200m) winner Amish Boy.
“And the good thing is, we have a Star Witness colt out of a Not A Single
Doubt mare to sell - the same cross as Amish Boy - Lot 271,” he said of a
draft made up of homebreds and yearlings consigned on behalf of clients.
“We also have another nice Star Witness colt, Lot 151, and we have a very
nice American Pharoah filly and a Your Song filly as well as a nice Epaulette.”
Fellow South Australian operation Cornerstone Stud has 22 yearlings
on offer this week, a scaled-back draft for the 2020 auction.
Among the draft are the first southern hemisphere-bred crop by
Cornerstone shuttler Sir Prancealot (Tamayuz) who has made his mark
in the northern hemisphere, particularly the US where he sired last year’s
American Oaks (Gr 1, 10f) winner Lady Prancealot.
The sale starts at 10am local time today.

Seven for Pride Of DubaiThudson (2 c ex Thud by Snitzel), an $80,000
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale
purchase from the Glastonbury Farms draft who
was bred by Hilldene Farm’s Nick Wakim, made
the perfect start to his career, winning on debut
at Ballarat yesterday to provide Pride Of Dubai
(Street Cry) with his seventh first crop winner.
Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden and raced
by Carl Holt, Thudson took out the Craigs Royal
Hotel 2YO Maiden Plate (1100m) by one and
a quarter lengths over Fender Bender (Street
Boss) and Amateurish (Brazen Beau). Also the
sire of Listed winner Tanker and the stakes-
placed Dubai Star and Bella Nipotina, Pride Of
Dubai covered 176 mares last year and he has
two yearlings catalogued at the Magic Millions
Adelaide Yearling Sale.
Five for RothesayLyndhurst Stud resident Rothesay (Fastnet
Rock) sired his fifth individual stakes winner
when Over Exposure (5 g ex Show A Princess
by Show A Heart) took out yesterday’s C S
Hayes Memorial Stakes (Listed, 1600m). The
Tony McEvoy-trained five-year-old, who
was winning his fourth race in 16 starts, beat
Picklehaube (Helmet) by half a length, with
Charossa (Myboycharlie) a further length and
three quarters away in third. Rothesay stands
for a fee of $4,950.
McEvoy takes delight at Hayes winTony McEvoy could not hide his elation at
finally winning the race named in honour
of his former boss at Morphettville. McEvoy
worked for the late Colin Hayes, firstly as an
apprentice then as a foreman at the Lindsay
Park stable at Angaston in the Barossa Valley in
South Australia. When Colin Hayes' eldest son
Peter was killed in a plane crash and his other
son David was training in Hong Kong, McEvoy
was promoted to head trainer at Lindsay Park.
After David Hayes returned to Australia and
decided to relocate Lindsay Park to Euroa in
Victoria, McEvoy took over as head trainer for
Melbourne businessman Wayne Mitchell at
the Angaston property, which was renamed
Kildalton Park. "I reckon I'm here because of
the boss, C S," McEvoy told Racing.com. "He
moulded me, groomed me through my young
days and groomed me into what I am today.
I'm very proud to have won this race as it means
a lot to me. I will cherish it and I'm sure he
would be proud because he knew what a big
part he had played."
First for DelzaoRunson (7 g ex Runs On Dreams by Last
Tycoon) posted a first win since October
2018 when making all the running to take
out the Matrice Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at
Morphettville yesterday and in the process
provided his sire Delzao (Encosta De Lago)
with a first stakes winner. The Leon and Troy
Corstens-trained seven-year-old, who went
unsold at $2,500 at the 2013 Great Southern
Weanling Sale, was winning his tenth race
in 38 starts when holding on from the fast
finishing pair Amberdi (Ambidexter) and
Beautiful Flyer (Solo Flyer)
Amish Boy lands MM Adelaide 2YO ClassicAmish Boy (Star Witness) broke his maiden
tag when narrowly landing the Magic
Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic (1200m) at
Morphettville yesterday. Trained by Ciaron
Maher and David Eustace, Amish Boy was
lining up for his fourth start in the $200,000
race and just prevailed over Glenfiddich
(Fastnet Rock). Bribery (Spirit Of Boom) took
third spot. "He thoroughly deserved that
as he had been unlucky not to have won a
race," Eustace told Racing.com. "We thought
he was good enough to go and run in the
Magic Millions in January, but he didn't quite
get there. Full credit to the staff for keeping
him happy and healthy. He'll definitely get
further. Whether he goes up to Sydney and
we consider something like the Sires' or go a
rung below, we can work that out."
23 for HenrythenavigatorEuropean import Mugatoo (5 g ex Elopa by
Tiger Hill) made the breakthrough in stakes
company as he stretched his unbeaten
Australian record to three with a victory in
yesterday’s Canberra Cup (Listed, 2000m).
The Kris Lee’s-trained five-year-old beat Fun
Fact (The Factor) by two and a half lengths,
with Made Of Ore (Duporth) a further length
behind in third. Yesterday’s success meant
that Mugatoo became the 23rd individual
stakes winner for the former Coolmore
stallion Henrythenavigator (Kingmambo).

Mugatoo enters Sydney Cup pictureMugatoo joined yesterday’s Adelaide Cup
winner (Gr 2, 3200m) King Of Leogrance
(Camelot), Master Of Wine (Maxios) and
Shared Ambition (Born To Sea) at $8 in
the TAB's market for the Sydney Cup (Gr
1, 3200m) on April 11 although his next
target has yet to be decided. "There are
some decisions to make but hopefully this
gets his rating up to get him in some nicer
races," Kris Lees' stable representative
Lucas Miller said. "Kris is very good at
picking the right races and Luke Murrell
and Jamie Lovett (Australian Bloodstock)
will have some input."
167 for Exceed And ExcelExceed And Excel (Danehill) sired his 167th
individual stakes winner when Promotions (3 g
ex Transfers by Street Cry) took the step up in
grade in his stride with a success in yesterday’s
Canberra Guineas (Listed, 1400m). The James
Cummings-trained gelding was registering his
second win in nine starts when beating Chat
(Deep Field) by a long neck. Havin’ Fun (All
Too Hard) finished another length and three
quarters away in third. The Darley reverse
shuttler, who stood for a fee of $88,000 (inc
GST), covered 138 mares at Darley’s Kelvinside
property in 2019.
Probabeel nominated for Coolmore ClassicStar New Zealand filly Probabeel (Savabeel)
was yesterday installed as the $4.50 favourite
by the TAB for Saturday’s Coolmore Classic
(Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill. The last-start
Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner
heads the market from the John Thompson-
trained Sweet Deal ($5.50). Probabeel is also
nominated for Saturday’s Phar Lap Stakes
(Gr 2, 1500m), a race in which her arch-rival
Funstar (Adelaide) is set to line-up. The Chris
Waller-trained Funstar and Probabeel from
the Jamie Richards stable, have met at Group
1 level twice, with the score one apiece. "I
just don't think Funstar is quite ready for the
Coolmore," Waller said of Funstar. "It's not to
say we wouldn't run her in a Doncaster later
in the prep but I want to stick to my guns and
run her in the Phar Lap, the Vinery and then
make a decision after that."
Pike on Regal Power Champion Western Australian jockey Willie
Pike has elected to stick with Australian
Cup (Gr 1. 2000m) runner-up Regal Power
(Pierro) in Saturday’s $5 million All-Star
Mile (1600m) at Caulfield. Pike had the
option to partner Australian Guineas (Gr
1, 1600m) runner-up Superstorm (Sebring)
in the lucrative race but has decided to
continue his association with the four-
year-old instead of the Grant and Alana
Williams-trained stablemate. As a result,
Mark Zahra has picked up the ride on
Superstorm who like Regal Power is owned
by Bob and Sandra Peters.

Kolding set to improveChris Waller cannot fault Kolding's condition
ahead of the All-Star Mile but admits the left-
handed direction holds some fears. Waller's
trepidation comes from Kolding's first start
at Caulfield when he ran fifth in the Futurity
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on February 22 and
appeared uncomfortable. "Kolding worked
well this morning (Monday) and I can't fault
the way the horse looks,” Waller said. "My only
single fear is the left-handed way of going and
I am just hoping that the blinkers might help
the horse keep on the bridle and travelling a
bit stronger so he can get around that turn,
balance up and let down strongly. Hopefully
he can draw an inside barrier and find the rail.
That will be a big plus for him. He's just got to
put that first run at Caulfield under his belt and
learn from it and that's not an unusual thing for
Sydney horse.”
McEvoy to ride Hanseatic
Kerrin McEvoy will ride last-start Blue Diamond
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Hanseatic
(Street Boss) in next week’s Golden Slipper
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). The Anthony Freedman-
trained colt, who was ridden by Tim Clark
as a late replacement for Luke Currie in the
Diamond, will not have a start before the $3.5
million race on March 21. McEvoy rode Dame
Giselle (I Am Invincible) to win the Reisling
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on Saturday and Barbaric
(I Am Invincible) to victory in Sunday’s Black
Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in Canberra but
has elected to jump on board the Godolphin-
owned Hanseatic.
Clark to ride Dame GiselleTim Clark will not be without a Golden
Slipper ride, with the Sydney jockey replacing
Kerrin McEvoy on the Peter and Paul
Snowden-trained Dame Giselle. Owned by
Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock and China
Horse Club, Dame Giselle has not finished
further back than second in four starts
which includes Saturday’s Reisling Stakes
and the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) last
November.
Barbaric 12th in Slipper orderBarbaric’s victory in the Black Opal Stakes has
moved the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained
juvenile into 12th spot in the ballot for the
Golden Slipper. His stablemate Dame Giselle
sits top of the list, alongside Farnan (Not A
Single Doubt), Hungry Heart (Frankel) and
Mamaragan (Wandjina).
NZ Derby third set for Sydney campaignTrainer Stephen Marsh is pleased with the
manner in which Scorpz (Charm Spirit) has
bounced back from his recent New Zealand
Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) exertions with the colt
now set to embark on a Sydney campaign. The
Group 3 winner maintained a strong gallop
to the line to finish third in the New Zealand
Derby, leaving Marsh under no doubt that
he will relish another staying challenge.
Scorpz will contest the Rosehill Guineas (Gr
1, 2000m) on March 21 before the Australian
Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick a fortnight
later. “I was rapt with his Derby run and he
came through it well,” Marsh said. “He has
had six days out in the paddock and he put
on some good weight and came back looking
awesome for his little break. I was thinking
originally that I would just go straight to the
Australian Derby but he did so well in his
week in the paddock that we will go to the
Rosehill Guineas now for sure and then into
the Derby. He has just come back magic.”
Track rider killed in accidentA track rider working for prominent trainer
Danny O’Brien has been killed after being
struck by a car in a collision while riding a horse
near the stable’s Thirteenth Beach property in
Victoria early yesterday. The man, believed to
be a Japanese national and aged in his early 30s,
reportedly collided with the vehicle travelling
on Thirteenth Beach Road near Geelong about
6.45am while on horseback. He died at the
scene. The driver and the horse involved in the
incident sustained minor injuries. Police and
WorkSafe are investigating, and a report will be
prepared for the coroner.
O’Brien pays tribute to stablehandDanny O'Brien has expressed his heartbreak
after the death of one of his track riders
yesterday. "It's with a heavy heart and
tremendous grief that we confirm an incident
that claimed the life of one our staff this
morning," O’Brien said in a statement. "Our
thoughts, prayers and support are with the
family of our friend and colleague and all
our team. We are completely heartbroken.
We have had some tough days in this
industry, but they are nothing compared to
the heartbreak and sadness of today. We ask
that the privacy of our staff to be respected
as they come to terms with today's tragedy.”
The unraced horse involved in the incident
is being monitored by vets. Racing Victoria
and its Stableline counselling program are
assisting O'Brien and his staff across his
stables at Barwon Heads and Flemington.
McGillivray banned againQueensland jockey Matt McGillivray has
been suspended for four weeks after being
found guilty of reckless riding at the Sunshine
Coast. The ban was McGillivray's fourth
suspension in three weeks and his second
in two days. Stewards found McGillivray had
moved out aboard favourite Winning Shot
(Shooting To Win) at the 450-metre mark in
a 1000-metre benchmark race on Sunday.
Winning Shot, who made heavy contact
with Teagz (Mossman) and Better Than
Gold (Better Than Ready), finished a neck
second to Simply So (Strategic Maneuver).
McGillivray's four-week ban begins on March
22 and comes on top of an eight-day ban for
causing interference in the last race at Eagle
Farm on Saturday. He was also suspended
for eight days at the Toowoomba meeting
on February 26 and six days at Doomben on
February 19.

Plumptre reflects on “unique achievement”Cambridge CEO Henry Plumptre yesterday paid
his own personal tribute to the departing Marcus
Corban. "A 40-year tenure, with 30 as general
manager, at any major thoroughbred nursery is a
unique achievement and something that Marcus
has managed with great skill and tact,” he said.
"I was lucky enough to know him well during
his time with Sir Patrick and I have nothing but
admiration and respect for the manner in which
he conducted himself during that time. For
myself, Brendan and Jo, his continued presence
at Cambridge after the takeover in April 2018
allowed us the flexibility to get on with a major
refurbishment of the farm, at the same time as
running a commercial operation. His intimate
knowledge of the farm, its client base and local
contractors was instrumental in us being able to
complete a major renovation, cover 350 mares
per season for the past two years and prepare two
successful yearling drafts for Karaka. We will be
sad to see him go, but wish him and Catherine the
very best for the future."
Unlaced out to cause Oaks upsetGuy Lowry and Grant Cullen are hoping they will
be able to pull off another shock result in a big
race when Unlaced (Niagara) takes her chance in
Saturday’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m).
The Hastings training partners have joined forces
for three Group 1 wins, two of those coming
at Trentham in the Telegraph Handicap (Gr 1,
1200m), including with $80 chance Adventador
(Fast ‘n’ Fanous) in 2016. The lightly-tried Unlaced
is a $40 chance for Saturday’s race at present,
having recorded two wins, two seconds and a last-
start stakes placing in her five starts. “It would be
nice to rock them again,” Lowry said. “It’s a big ask
for her and we’re hopeful. I guess that’s all you can
be against some of the top fillies, but she has been
set for the race for a long time and we’re happy
with her so we’ll line her up.”

Eremein dies, aged 18Five-time Group 1 winner Eremein (Timber
Country) has died aged 18 of colic. Robrick
Lodge said the gelding died at the property
on Sunday. Trained by Allan Denham for
Geoff and Beryl White, Eremein won both
the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) and
Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2005. The
following autumn he added the Ranvet Stakes
(Gr 1, 2000m), BMW Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) and
Queen Elizabeth (Gr 1, 2000m). His career
was interrupted by the equine influenza
outbreak in 2007 and he was retired after
winning his final start, the Festival Stakes
(Listed, 1500m), in January 2008. "It is with
profound sadness we say goodbye to our old
mate Eremein," Robrick Lodge said. "A horse
of character, talent, manners and of great
heart, he remains the only horse to have won
the Ranvet, Queen Elizabeth and the BMW in
the one year. Bye old mate."

Corban leaves Cambridge after four decades
Marcus Corban yesterday announced his
resignation as general manager of Cambridge
Stud, in his 40th year as a key figure at the
famous nursery. Corban joined Cambridge
Stud in 1981, when it was under the
stewardship of Sir Patrick and Lady Justine
Hogan, and remained when it moved to the
care of Brendan and Jo Lindsay. During those
decades, it stood powerhouse stallions such as
Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) and his son Zabeel, with
the likes of Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) and
the late Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) being more
recent shuttle visitors. "It is with both sadness
and pride that I announce my departure from
Cambridge Stud," Corban said. "After an
incredible career managing the farm through a
successful and iconic period in New Zealand’s
breeding history, the time has come for me to
explore other opportunities. I am appreciative
to Brendan and Jo Lindsay for the opportunity
to operate as general manager for the last
two years under their ownership. I am sure
the team at Cambridge Stud will continue
to honour and grow the farm’s legacy. I have
worked with some amazing horses and people
during my time at Cambridge Stud and formed
many friendships that will last a lifetime. I look
forward with excitement to the next stage of
my career."

King Of Leogrance (Camelot)
yesterday recorded an emotional
win for the Danny O'Brien stable
in the 150th Adelaide Cup (Gr 2,
3200m) at Morphettville.
Earlier in the day, a track rider from
O'Brien's Thirteenth Beach stable, near
Geelong, was killed when he and the horse he
was riding were struck by a car.
Representing O'Brien in Adelaide on
Monday, assistant trainer Ben Gleeson was
fighting back tears after the Lloyd Williams-
owned King Of Leogrance won South Australia’s
feature staying race.
"It's a very tough day for the whole stable,"
Gleeson told Racing.com.
"We're very happy for the Williams team,
but with everyone back home at Barwon Heads
and Flemington, it's been devastating.
"We're really hurting and we appreciate
everyone's support today."
Sent out the $2.20 favourite under Damian
Lane, King Of Leogrance cruised to a two-and-a-
quarter length win from Good Idea (So You Think)
($17), with Chouxting The Mob (Jimmy Choux)
($31) another three-quarters-of-a-length away third.
King Of Leogrance's win was the third of
the day for the O'Brien stable after War Tiger
(War Front) won earlier on the program at
Morphettville and Serengeti (Smart Missile)
was successful at Ballarat.
Williams' son and part-owner, Nick
Williams, said the Adelaide Cup success would
hopefully put some cheer into the O'Brien
stable after a shocking day.
"I think this goes out to all the staff at Danny
O'Brien's," Williams said.
"Obviously it can't make up for what has
happened this morning, but hopefully it cheers
them up a little.
"It's a horrific thing to happen but thankfully
this horse has shown his true form today."
Williams said King Of Leogrance could
possibly head to next month's Sydney Cup (Gr
1, 3200m) at Randwick.
"It's only his third run in this time so we
might look at going to Sydney with him," he
said.
Lane said there was no ceiling to European
import King Of Leogrance.
"He's such a progressive type that no matter

Japanese rider Masakazu (Massa) Tanaka
opened his Macau account with a perfect
ride on the Geoff Allendorf-trained Luen
On Success (Lord Kanaloa) in Saturday’s
Class 4 Handicap over 1200 metres.
Tanaka put Luen On Success into a great
position from barrier seven to be in sixth spot
on the rail in a race run at good speed. Locked
away at the top of the straight, Tanaka waited
patiently until he found an opening between
Chapman Way (Strategic Maneuver) and
Chappo (Fastnet Rock) to burst through and hit
the lead close to the line.
Race favourite Californiatreasure
(Onemorenomore), who also had trouble
finding clear running, was powering to the
line late, however Luen On Success was able
to scramble over the line with a neck to spare.
Chappo was three quarters of a length away in
third.
It was win number two for Luen On
Success who is the first of the Lord Kanaloa
breed to race in Macau. The run time for
Saturday’s race of 1.09 compared well with
the Class 2 (1.08.9) on the good track. The
win took Geoff Allendorf to 21 winners for
the season and a clear second to premiership
leader Tony Fung, who is on 28.
Tanaka is a much travelled jockey who
actually did his apprenticeship in Queensland
before plying his trade elsewhere.
“I actually did my apprentice training at
the Racing Academy at Deagon in Australia.
Mel Schumacher and Pam O’Neill were two of
my teachers. It was a great experience for me.”
Tanaka said.
“After that I went to New Zealand where I
spent many years, first as an apprentice and
then a senior rider. I rode one Group 1 winner
there on Booming in the Thorndon Mile. I also
rode a few Group 3 winners as well.”
After New Zealand, Tanaka rode
successfully for four years in Korea, winning
over 150 races, before making the move to
Macau In January.
Whilst Saturday was Tanaka’s first winner
after 31 rides since his switch, his efforts have
been a lot better than the stats read; having
made the quinella five times in close finishes
as well as managing three other minor placings.
One of the hardest working jockeys at the
track in the morning, Tanaka should see more
opportunities come his way following this
breakthrough win.
Rock To Road (Stryker) proved that his
win over the previously unbeaten Golden
Conqueror (Rothesay) on the sand a fortnight
back was no fluke when he posted a strong win
in Saturday’s Class 2 over 1200 metres on the
turf.
Ridden by Breinell Yamzon, Rock To Road
was flat footed at the start before recovering
into a good spot off the speed, However, he
then had to check off the heels of race favourite
You Are The Best (I Am Invincible) at the 800m,
putting him a lot further back in the run than
anticipated.
Once in the straight the son of Stryker was
still locked away with nowhere to go until the
final 100 metres when he powered through a
gap to hit the front right on the line to win by
a neck from Bow Noculars (Red Arrow), with
Gem Glory (I Am Invincible) close up in third.
Formerly trained by Chris Waller in
Australia when he raced as Beidi, Rock To Road
pulled off the upset of the season when at odds
of $2190.50 for the win, he bought Golden
Conquerors unbeaten record of four straight
wins on the all-weather to an end.
Prepared by Ricky Choi, Rock To Road is
going to give his owner Mr. Mok Shing Fung
plenty of joy in the coming months on either
sand, or turf, where his winning times have
been first rate.

Nick Moore Off to a Great Start
Fledgling trainer Nick Moore is off to a
great start as Macau’s newest trainer with two
winners over the weekend’s racing courtesy of
victories for Sport Genius (Ocean Park) and
Hostwin Saturn (Stratum).
The highly-promising Sport Genius gave Moore
his second winner when he made it two on end to
win the Class 4 over 1050 metres on Friday night.
Sport Genius is a nice looking son of Ocean
Park who is going places and Friday’s win came
hot on the heels of his easy win a fortnight back.
Hostwin Saturn was the second of Moore’s
winners when he was given a lovely ride by
French jockey J B Hamel to win the Class 2 & 3
over 1500 metres on the turf.
Formerly trained in Australia by Gary Moore,
Hostwin Saturn won a Hawkesbury maiden and
placed twice more from his ten runs there.
The son of Stratum turned in a super effort
on debut in Macau, coming from a mile back to
run fourth behind the smart Gem Glory, only
beaten one and a quarter lengths, but then had
a luckless run over 1500 metres two weeks ago
behind Oneofthegreats (Snitzel), when he over
raced badly and was posted wide throughout,
but still managed to be beaten just four lengths.
Saturday was a different story under the
tender hands of Hamel who got the gelding to
relax beautifully in fourth spot in the run before
running home strongly to the line.
Moore, who only raced three horses over
the weekend, has a small team of 12 horses at
the moment, with a couple of more on the way.
The win by Hostwin Saturn gave Hamel
four winners for the weekend having ridden
two winners on Friday night in White Debbie
(Medaglia D’Oro) in the Class 2 & 3 over 1350m,
and Hostwin Prosperits (Redwood) in the Class
4 over 1600m. Fortune Flyer (Sebring) capped
off Saturday for Hamel with a short head win in
the Class 3 & 4 over 1500 metres.
Fausto Henrique is another jockey who
enjoyed a good weekend, kicking home three
winners over the two days racing.
Henrique got off to a good start on Friday
with Mr Fortune (Jet Spur) for Tony Fung in
the Class 4 over 1050 metres and then followed
that up with a win on On Purpose (Rubick) for
Victor Chan in the Class 5 & 6 over 1350 metres.
On Saturday, Henrique was seen to
advantage on the Patrick Lee-trained Diamond
Stellar (Testa Rossa) who produced a great turn
of foot down the home straight to run away with
the Class 4 & 5 over 1500 metres.
A lovely looking son of Testa Rossa,
Diamond Stellar made it two wins on the trot
following his impressive victory in a 0-35
contest back in January.
Henrique is currently in third spot on the rider’s
table with 19 winners. Roger Yu leads the charge on
23 victories, with Luis Corrales on 20 wins and J G
Hamel back in fourth spot on 17 winners.

Spill The Beans - Tumbler Ridge (2 c ex
Factor Fiction by Untouchable) lived up to his

promising two-year, who beat Bellissimi Amici
(Rothesay) by a half a length with the same
distance back to Redoute’s Image (Redoute’s
Choice), became the fifth winner for the ill-
fated Spill The Beans (Snitzel) who died in
October last year.

John Sadler with a third successive win in
Saturday’s Santa Anita Handicap (Gr 1, 10f).
Formerly trained by Steve Asmussen, the five-
year-old was registering his fourth win in 24
starts, and first in stakes company, when he
beat Multiplier (The Factor) by a neck, with
favourite Midcourt (Midnight Lute) a further
half length away in third. Bred in Kentucky by
Paget Bloodstock, Combatant is out of Border
Dispute (Boundary), making him related
to three other stakes performers, including
Group 3 winner Long Lashes (Rock Hard Ten).

2, 2400m) is a half-brother to Champion filly
Phalaenopsis and he stands at Shadai Stallion
Station for a fee of ¥6,000,000 ($85,000).

Le Havre - Progressive filly Bebeautiful (3
f ex Be Released by Three Valleys) completed
a hat-trick of wins for the calendar year when
taking out the Prix Rose de Mai (Listed,
1900m), at Deauville on Friday, making her
first outing in stakes company a successful one
and providing Montfort et Preaux resident Le
Havre (Noverre) with his 34th individual stakes
winner. Passefontaine (Wootton Bassett) ran
second, beaten half a length, while American
Apples (American Post) was a further short-
head back in third. Bebeautiful was offered at
the Arqana August Yearling Sale at Deauville
in 2018, being led out unsold for €35,000, and
she has now won three of her five starts for
Frederic Rossi having run second on the other
two occasions. Le Havre, who is also the sire of
Group 1 winners La Cressonniere and Avenir
Certain, stands for a fee of €50,000
Outstrip - Outstrip (Exceed And Excel) sired
his second individual stakes winner when French
import Outburst (3 f ex Daidoo by Shamardal)
justified favouritism by winning the Florida Oaks
(Gr 3. 8.5f) at Tampa Bay on Saturday. She just
edged out Walk In Marrakesh (Siyouni) by a head
with a gap of a length and three quarters to Secret
Stash (Mukhadram) in third.
Poet’s Voice - Late Darley stallion Poet’s
Voice (Dubawi) sired his 18th individual stakes
winner on Friday when Nature’s Colours (4
c ex Sundrop by Sunday Silence) landed the
Prix Altipan (Listed, 1500m) on the all-weather
track at Deauville. The Andre Fabre-trained
colt, who was a late starter having not debuted
until last August, has now won three of his four
starts, supplementing his Compiegne win in
the autumn with a three-length success on his
seasonal reappearance yesterday. Recover Me
(Fastnet Rock) ran second, while race-favourite
Gwendola (Oasis Dream) was a further half-
length away in third. Poet’s Voice died at the
age of 11 in 2018 having suffered a heart attack,
while he is best known as the sire of Mackinnon
Stakes (Gr 1 2000m) winner Trap For Fools and
dual Group 1 scorer Poet’s Word.
Rubick - Australia’s leading second crop
sire Rubick (Encosta De Lago) sired his third
individual stakes winner when Rubisaki (3
f Senro Kisaki by Danehill Dancer) claimed
Saturday’s Kewney Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at
Flemington with a dominant display. An
$85,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Prime
Thoroughbreds from the Edinburgh Park draft,
Rubisaki was bred by Ian Smith and is the fourth
winner from four foals to race from Sydney
metropolitan winner Senro Kisaki (Danehill
Dancer). Coolmore’s Rubick stood for a fee of
$38,500 in 2019.
Sepoy - Sepoy’s (Elusive Quality) son Salute
The Soldier (5 g ex Street Fire by Street Cry) won
his first stakes race when successful in the Burj
Nahaar Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Meydan on
Saturday. He came home five and a half lengths
clear of his nearest pursuer, Axelrod (Warrior’s
Return), who in turn finished a length in front
of the favourite, Secret Ambition (Exceed And
Excel). The Fawzi Nass-trained five-year-old
was recording his sixth victory in 17 starts.
Salute The Soldier is one of five winners out of
Street Fire (Street Cry), who also has a juvenile
filly by Iffraaj (Zafonic). Sepoy has now sired
15 individual stakes winners including three-
time Group 1 winner Alizee, Classic winner
Unforgetable Filly and Group 1 performers
Dabyah and Indian Blessing. He stands at
Darley’s Northwood Park for a fee of $11,000.
Twirling Candy - Trophy Chaser (4 c ex
European Union by Successful Appeal) took
out the Challenger Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Tampa
Bay on Saturday, getting the better of favourite
KIng For A Day (Uncle Mo) by a neck, with the
front two pulling 11 lengths clear of the third
home, Prompt (Blame). Saturday’s success by
Trophy Chaser means Twirling Candy (Candy
Ride) has now sired 24 individual stakes
winners. Trophy Chaser was bred in Kentucky
by Overbrook Farm and Kildare Stud. He was
sent through the ring three times, with JCA
purchasing him for $42,000 from the de Meric
Sales consignment to the 2018 Ocala Breeders'
Sales March Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training.
Uncle Mo - Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) sired
his 55th individual stakes winner when King
Guillermo (3 c ex Slow Sand by Dixielandband)
ran out a shock winner of Saturday’s Tampa
Bay Derby (Gr 2, 8.5f). The Juan Carlos Avila-
trained 49-1 chance beat favourite Sole Volante
(Karakontie) by four and three quarter lengths
with Texas Swing (Curlin) a further length and
three quarters away in third. Bred in Kentucky
by Carhue Investments, Grouseridge Ltd., and
Marengo Investments, King Guillermo is the sixth
named foal out of Slow Sand (Dixieland Band).

Analysis: An easy last-start winner at Listed level at Flemington
nine days prior, King Of Leogrance was untroubled here also,
proving much too good for his rivals to post a fifth win at start
12. He was third-last, three wide with cover with a circuit to run,
before improving a couple of spots past the 1600m. Still three
wide to the 600m, he then quickened, cruised up to fifth and then
moved into third at the 300m, full of running. He took over at the
200m and was in no danger to the line, clear by a two and a quarter
lengths. Good Idea sat fifth at the 1000m, moved up to second at
the 500m, and then led them in. Caught at the 200m, he kept going
but was never going to overhaul the winner. This was a good run
from Chouxting The Mob who was second-last at the 600m and
then finished very strongly, although much too late for third with the
first three well clear. Dark Alley tracked the winner into the straight
before battling away for a distant fourth. [LJ]

Then followed: Knickpoint (AUS), Foxborough (AUS), Savoury (NZ),
Gone Bye (AUS) & Girls Are Ready (AUS), last.
Analysis: A nice win here for the consistent Godolphin-raced colt
Promotions who took his record to two wins and six placings
from nine starts in scoring, his first win at stakes level. He was
smartly away and Hugh Bowman positioned him perfectly, easing
to trail the leader (Chat), tracking a good tempo. He went back
at the 200m, got into clear running shortly afterwards and then
finished well to score a good win. Chat went to the front, got a
break nearing the 200m and then battled on well for second after
running a bold race. Havin’ Fun settled in last place in the nine-
runner field, improved between runners on turning for home and
then ran on well over the closing stages for third, looking suited to
further, while the favourite Knickpoint, a stablemate of the winner,
had a nice trip in fifth place on the rails, put in a bid at the 200m
and then battled on for (2.8 lengths) fourth. [KB]

Then followed: Goldifox (AUS), Regalo Di Gaetano (AUS), Gigglon
(AUS), Yankee Eyes (AUS), Kardashing (AUS) & Wetakemanhattan
(AUS), last.
Analysis: With nowhere to go at the 300m, Over Exposure thrust
between runners and raced away for a big win, his fourth, and a
maiden stakes success having been twice stakes placed here last
May. He drifted back last soon after the start and remained there
to the 600m. The nine runners compacted rounding into the home
straight but Jamie Kah aboard Over Exposure had him still last.
Into the straight Kah switched to the fence, was blocked but then
found a narrow gap at the 200m, thrust through, descended upon
the leader, had a brief tussle and then edged into the lead by a
half length short of the line. Pickelhaube had a nice run in third
(rails) to the 600m, got off the fence turning in and then shot to the
lead at the 300m. He slipped clear, was caught at the 100m, gave
a fight but had to settle for second. Charossa sat sixth (one out) at
the 600m, he challenged at the 300m, was third at the 100m, and
looked finished before coming back to grab third from Goldifox
who ran into that position but was nutted on the line. [LJ]

Analysis: The progressive Irish-bred import Mugatoo is now
unbeaten in three starts in Australia since joining the Kris Lees
stable, advancing from winning a Benchmark 88 (1600m) at
Randwick on January 25 to taking out this Listed race in good
style, his fifth win in nine start-career. He settled nicely in sixth
place on the rails before Kerrin McEvoy eased him into clear
running on turning for home. He took the lead approaching the
100m and then drew away to score comfortably, looking suited
to further still. Fun Fact went to the front and then ran along at a
good tempo. He was only overhauled coming to the 100m and he
then held on for second after giving his supporters a good sight.
Maid Of Ore raced back in third place, went to second shortly
after straightening, and she kept battling on quite well for third.
Think It Over raced back in fifth place, one off the rails, improved
deep coming to the turn and then battled on quite well for (3.8
lengths) fourth, while Primativo made good late ground from the
tail of the field for (5.4 lengths) fifth. [KB]

Analysis: Away from the winner’s circle since October 2018 when
he scored over 1200 metres at Moonee Valley, seven-year-old
Runson led from the start for win ten and his maiden stakes
success. He was a length clear very early and darted further in
front at the top of the straight. He was well clear at the 200m
then began to tire, the lead shrinking quickly, and was running
on empty when the post arrived just in time, still ahead by a short
neck. Amberdi sat fifth, one out turning in, found room near the
200m and then charged after the winner, just failing to overhaul
him in a game effort. Beautiful Flyer was sat in midfield four deep
turning in, then finished well to be almost in line with the first two
at the post. Hard Empire flew home out of the pack for fourth. [LJ]
