I cannot believe we are at the end of another academic year. In the last few days, we have celebrated our Year 6 pupils who leave us to day ready for new adventures as they begin their secondary schooling. We are immensely proud of each and everyone one of them and we will miss them all. During the year, we have achieved the Silver Artsmark Award recognising the wonderful artistic opportunities and experiences we give all pupils. We have also received the Gold Level Caring to Learn Award, which recognises all we do for all our children, and particularly those who are vulnerable. Our year has also brought us the Primary Science Quality Mark and our Science Week was superb in providing pupils with specific experiences, which allowed them to aspire to be Scientists! We are very much looking forward to next year, following a well- deserved rest. The staff, and myself wish you a restful summer holiday as a family. To those families who leave us, may I thank you for being such supportive parents, for engaging so positively with us and being partners in the education of your children. On a final note, we say goodbye to Mrs Suzanne Jones who leaves us - she has done so much for the education of children in Year 5.6. At the end of the day today, it will be ‘capes off’ for our amazing front office duo who put their super hero skills into action every day. Thank you to the Governors for all their strategic support and time this year and to all the staff for their hard work– they are a superb team! Reception

What an amazing year we have had with the children in Tigers and Caterpillars. We have done lots of outdoor learning,

including making bird feeders, observing seasonal changes and growing beans, sunflowers and prize winning

courgettes!

We turned the classroom into a Chinese restaurant to celebrate Chinese New Year and all the children tried noodles

and prawn crackers. Everyone had their own technique with the chopsticks, with some finding them easier to handle

than others.

The children’s first ever school trip was to Oakham Castle. They were all extremely well behaved and joined in with all

the activities on offer including making their own toys and hunting for horseshoes.

We can’t believe that we have come to the end of their first year of school. The children have all had a wonderful year

and are more than ready for the move up into Year 1.

We have ended our school year on a high in Foundation

Stage! We found out this week that we won 2nd prize in the

Farm Kitchen’s courgette growing competition. This

competition was across many schools in Lincolnshire and we

are very proud that our children have won a prize for their

gardening and the excellent courgettes they produced. We

have won some lovely quality gardening tools which we will put

to good use in the Jubilee Garden and around the school.

What a fantastic first year at school the children have

had. They are all brilliant and we just know they will continue

to shine in Year 1!

Have a lovely summer everyone!

Key Stage 2 What a fabulous year in year 3 and 4! The children have worked their socks off and we are so proud of their

determination and attitude to strive for success. We have enjoyed fabulous trips, had fantastic visits from outside

companies to support our learning and we have been fully immersed in exciting topics.

First off, we started with our Animal Kingdom topic. We enjoyed learning about the ‘survival of the fittest’ and created

some beautiful animal art based on the books ‘North’ and ‘South’ by Dieter Braun.

In the second half of the Autumn Term, we got stuck into Victorian life and

learnt some amazing things about what life would be like as a Victorian Child.

We learnt about school life by experiencing it for ourselves, being taught by a

real life Victorian Teacher! We learnt how to write on slate and use a Quill and

ink- it was so hard to write neatly! We made beautiful Victorian Christmas tree

decorations and played some Victorian playground games.

In the Spring, we learnt about Pirates and had a buccaneering time! We learnt lots about famous pirates and applied lots

of our writing skills to create fact files for our Jolly Roger display. We particularly enjoyed learning about how ruthless

the pirates were and couldn’t believe the lengths they went to, to steal treasure from one another. We loved creating

our own Pirate treasure maps to help us journey around the world. Did you know, the reason Pirates wore Eye patches

was believed to have been so that they could adjust to poor lighting conditions below deck more quickly?

During the term, we also enjoyed learning how to play tag rugby with Mrs Oakley. It was fantastic fun, the skills and

tactic we learnt will help us with lots of other games in the future.

Next up, India! We loved learning about the Indian culture and some of the amazing Geographical landmarks you could

find there. On our India day, we enjoyed tasting Indian food like pakoras, samosas and naan breads and we created

beautiful Rangoli patterns, mehndi designs and enjoyed trying on authentic Indian clothing.

Continuing on our journey, we travelled to Egypt for our next topic! We have learnt so much about the amazing Ancient

Egyptians, their lifestyles, their Gods, the Pyramids and even what happens to them once they die! The children have

fully engaged with lots of different resources to help them learn about the past and wrote fantastic newspaper articles

about the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s Tomb.

Finally, how can we forget to mention our fabulous Food and Farming trip! An excellent day in the sunshine, learning

about the food we eat and the farms it comes from. Not to mention the amazing animals, gorgeous puppies and a

beautiful picnic lunch with all of our friends.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our amazing parents and helpers who make what we do

possible. Your continued support means we can take the children to wonderful places to enrich their learning. Here’s

to another fabulous year! Have a spectacular summer!

Key Stage 2

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have taught Y5.6 this past year. As a group of children they have come

together and formed an extraordinary bond that they will continue to remember for many years. What an amazing

year it has been: numerous sporting triumphs; oscar-worthy performances and that’s without mentioning the hard

work and determination the Y6s put in towards their SATs. What a talented bunch they are!

This year, we started off with fantastic work on Volcanoes. The children learnt so much and even produced their own

working, erupting volcano! They then showcased their new-found knowledge in our brilliant Collective Worship to

parents – the children still chant the Roman Numerals song even now!

After an exciting and informative trip to Duxford to prepare for the next topic, Spring Term began with the study of

WWII. We looked at many battles and the children were even able to re-enact the events of D-day on their very own

map of Europe, using figurines that they had made. We studied L.S. Lowry within Art and the children re-created their

own artwork based on his style. To get their hearts racing in Science, the children studied the circulatory system and

dramatized the flow of blood and oxygen around the body.

Once the Y6s had completed their SATs tests, the Y6s took part in a fantastic, fun-filled residential trip where they

showed lots of teamwork, determination and resilience when tackling new challenges. Some of the activities included

archery, zip wire, fencing, canoeing and a gladiator wall! During the crate stack activity, St. Gilbert’s were set a tricky

task to beat the previous JCA record and we managed it, with 16 crates stacked high – great teamwork! During this

time, the Y5s also had great fun at Clip and Climb at Wicksteed Park. Their behaviour was exceptional and they did

themselves and the school very proud. Everybody had success climbing up and down the walls and the teamwork on

some of the climbs was fantastic.

Throughout the whole year, all of our sports teams had great successes. All of the children showed amazing skill and

teamwork – we are so proud of everything the sports teams have achieved.

Our year ended with a fantastic performance of ‘Pirates and the Curry Bean’ from the Y6 children. They wowed us with

their ability to learn their lines and remember the song lyrics. They delivered three epic performances that will go

down in St Gilbert’s history that we have ever seen. The Leavers’ Service followed this and was a lovely way to end

their time at St Gilbert’s.

Good Luck Year 6

St Gilbert’s PTA

WHAT AN AMAZING YEAR!!

This year we all raised £10,500 What an amazing school year it has been! The St Gilbert’s PTA Core Committee couldn’t be more excited about what

we have accomplished this academic year! We are grateful for all the time, money and effort everyone has put into

making this such a rewarding year for our charity and all our children!

THANK YOU EVERYONE

We have spent £8000 this year so far on the new PA System, part funded school trips, topic weeks, new books,

refreshments and a few more extras.

We have recently bought the picnic tables and we have loved seeing the children using these every day and how

excited they have been about them being made from recycled bottle tops!

Over the summer holidays we are funding a decking with seating area on the field, the music room carpet and new

musical instruments, new classroom reading areas and some added extras within the foundation outside area.

We have also committed the £10,000 towards the playground works. With the news that school haven’t received the grant for resurfacing works we will be looking at our options at the start of Term and we hope to update you as soon as possible with what the new plans are. The final winner for the 100 Club for this year was Simon Burnell The club starts again in September and we hope lots of people will sign up then. Finally we are very excited about taking the whole school to the Panto at Xmas! Oh yes we are!

We look forward to working closely with school, families and organisations in the autumn term to set new goals and

establish exciting opportunities for our children through fun, new fundraising events.

We hope to welcome new parents to the Committee and continue relationships with those who have supported us in the past. We are all volunteers and we do need more support going forwards. We encourage anyone who is interested in supporting the PTA to please e-mail us at: [email protected] Our first PTA meeting of the Autumn Term will be held Friday 13th September at 9am in the Staffroom and we

hope to see lots of parents there. The AGM date will also be announced at the start of Term.

Your St Gilbert’s PTA Core Committee

We hope you have the most wonderful

summer break and that the sun shines
