LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Disello categories and king’s seriesI propose that in the next Disello competition there are more categories. Also, do a philatelic series about the kings of the old peninsular kingdoms. Kings of Asturias, León, Aragón, Pamplona (after named Kingdom of Navarra) and of Castilla, and finally of the Kings of Spain. I think it would be like a review of our history.

Javier San Miguel MartínezCurrently, the Disello competition has two categories: General, in which any person can participate. And, with the goal of fomenting the participation of younger people, the Juvenile, up to 18 years. We consider that these two categories widely picks all the possibilities of participation. In relation to the thematic of the kings, over time there has been stamps that have contemplated them.

Notice of SubscriptionTo avoid future non-provision of funds, would it be possible to receive a notice prior to the charge in this same mail? In this way we would ensure that we have sufficient balance in the account when the receipt would be charged.

Associació Amics Collecionistes GarrotxaEven though the dates of the subscription are given preemptively, in many occasions these suffer variations by different reasons, which makes it hard to communicate. Regardless, we’ll study the option to communicate in advance.

Stamps of Equatorial Guinea Why to collect the stamps of the Equatorial Guinea there’s the need to by the catalogue of Spain and the special dependencies of Spain, of Edifil? Those of us who don’t collect the Spain and Andorran Series, what is the purpose? A unique volume can be done about said country.

Francisco Pérez de VegaCorreos doesn’t make any catalogue – these are edited by philatelic editorials- but the stamps of Spain and Andorra can be consulted in the webpage of Correos.

Railway ThemeI’m a philatelic collector for many years and also a great fan of the railroad. I have found that there aren’t many stamps dedicated to this topic. It would be very interesting to create issues dedicated to the train: old steam locomotives, the buildings from the stations of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; commemorations of the construction of the railways; old railways companies; the railway motors from the 60s to the 90s; commemorations of

the start-up of postal trains; large infrastructures, etc ... and without forgetting the thousands of people who during these 170 years have contributed to them, the railroads.

Antonio BlancoWe’re conscious that one of the most collected themes are related to the transportation and specifically to the railways, that’s why there have been issued a large quantity of stamps where the stations, trains, railways have been represented. Given the interest, we will pass this proposal to the State’s Philatelic Commission.

Postmarked StampsIt frequently happens that the stamps don’t come postmarked, and it’s a little bit of a hassle to have to get a used stamp collection. I suggest the possibility to be able to subscribe to the postmarked stamps (the ‘normal’ ones, not the ‘first day’ ones or commemoratives). The French Post has this service.

Guillermo Rodríguez de Lema BlancoWe will study what you’re proposing, and yes, we see that there’s an interest for a bigger number of subscribers, we will have into consideration to roll out a subscription for postmarked stamps.

Used Stamps CollectingI am 54 years old (40 as a subscriber) and since I was a child I have collected stamps. I understand collecting as the search for used ones. Nowadays they are no longer used and collections of new ones cannot be made. Everything is limited to buying what is coming out and has no interest. Nor is it revalued over time, due to the huge print runs, and I am not interested in any other product that is not the stamp itself.

Ramón San Millán FernándezFrom the Direction of Philately we reinforce the effort that we have been making to make the stamp be useful again and we have explain the different initiatives that we have taken to accomplish this goal, but it is true that in the current society, the new technologies, go in the detriment of the philatelic collecting. The print runs are adjusted to the demand, trying to avoid speculation. We recommend collect the stamps for pleasure or culture, not for economic gains.

Reminder: The deadline for making claims in relation to the orders made to the Philatelic Service expire after 6 months of being sent. For suggesitons: [email protected]

Philatelic LandscapesThe stamps are big allies to improve the tourism in the country

The tourism is wealth to the people, the family, the community, the country and the world. Spain received in 2017 the record figure of 81,8 millions of foreign tourist, a 8,6% more than in 2016, according to INE. Data that makes the country follow those steps of France in 2016, number one world receiver of international tourists, that was of 82,6 millions, and overcoming the USA that received 75,6 millions.

CLOSE-UP

Spain have been recognized in the world by offering to the tourists hospitality, kindness, good weather, kilometers of beaches, great hotel deals, excellent gastronomy and a rich material and immaterial heritage: artworks, populat traditions, beautiful landscapes, an endless festive activities, museum, cities, World Heritages or monument.

In this line of thought, Correos has dedicated numerous stamps and postal effects to praise the wonders that Spain offers and since 2010 issues a series dedicated to Tourism. In it, the vast majority of stamps are related to their landscapes and tourism, although the chosen motifs are artistic works or natural parks. They have also commemorated national or international events related to tourist associations or companies, with gastronomy and festivals and popular traditions. In the seventies, the broadcasts dedicated to the National Paradors began, which premiered in 1976 with the stamp of the first one, Gredos.

Another way to encourage tourism have been the joint issues that are made with postal entities from other countries. Therefore, issues have been carried out between Spain and Austria (2009), Spain and Romania (2012) or Spain and Japan (2013). In recent years, stamps dedicated to tourism have multiplied, such as, for example, the series dedicated to Spanish Tourism that came out in 2012 and the Europa series, from that same year, with the slogan ‘Visit Spain’.

With the motif of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, in 2017, Correos started a project that reflects the importance that the stamp has not only for the transmission of documents from one place to another, but as informative value to get to know the personality and the tourist appeal of each country. A report was prepared on the main world tourist destinations -based on data from the World Tourism Organization- and it was concluded which were the 37 most tourist countries.

During the current year, the Tourism philatelic series has issued two stamps that summarize with one image much of the greatness of this country. The flip flop reminds the sun and the coast. The more than 2,000 hours of sun per year are ideal for the thousands of tourist that come to Spain, looking for the quality of the water and the almost 6,000 kilometers of beach. The stamp dedicated to the tourism of interior is represented by a Mountain boot, that translates to the rural populations, mounts, great peaks, the field or the snow. And, for two years, the serie 12 stamps, 12 months, 12 provinces seeks, apart from promoting the circulation of stamps, to promote knowledge about Spain by promoting the touristic wealth of its provinces.

The philatelic motifs provide important information about the countries that issue them and, thus, can arouse the interest of the people who collect them and also of anyone who receives them anywhere in the world through a letter or a package.

THE HISTORY CORNER

This is an African Town!, said the queen María Amalia de Sajonia when in 1759 came to Madrid with her husband Carlos III, who at its time said “Small Town ascended to court without even reaching a city”. Madrid offered in that moment a regrettable aspect to the eyes of the new monarch, a city that have maintained, through the centuries, a physiognomy of a medieval character, with houses close together and narrow streets in which the garbage was accumulated on the unpaved soil. Carlos III, that had the experience of having beautified the city of Naples, decided that he must transform Villa and the Court of Madrid so it was a capital representative of its name, transformation that made the monarch “the best mayor of Madrid”.

At that time, a building that was anticipating the mandates of the new king, a building that was the first step towards the urban transformation of the

area known as Puerta del Sol and was the result of the reformist ideals of illustration applied to mail administration and urban planning. A building that should be erected as a symbol of the new enlightened state that sought the economic development of the country with the implementation of policies aimed at the common good.

Already during the reign of Fernando VI, it

was assumed the necessity of the construction

of a building to improve the postal service

because of the multiplication of the jobs and

the centralization and direct management of

Correos by the State, but that building will not

begin to be built until the arrival of Carlos III.

Designed by the architect Jaime Marquet, it

would allow to change the physiognomy of the

area known as Puerta del Sol

The construction of this building 250 years ago was key to ‘draw’ a new Madrid

THE HISTORY CORNER

That new building was the Royal House of Correos, that was erected in Puerta del Sol, a zone that had the narrowest streets in which a set of houses were together, religious buildings and even some other palace, such as the Conde de Oñate. A zone that had fame by being one of the gossip place of the Villa that propagated from the convent of San Felipe El Real to the nearby places of the House of Postas.

It was the Marqués de la Ensenada, during the kingdom of Fernando VI, who realized the need of building a Central Post Office that better suited the conditions for the postal service, which at that time had multiplied its volume of work due to the increased centralization and direct management of Correos by the State. The project was trusted to Ventura Rodríguez, one of the greatest architects of the Enlightenment, who already in his initial plan had the intention of taking advantage of the construction of the new building to align the buildings and widen the Puerta del Sol.

Neoclassical FrenchThe arrival of Carlos III to Madrid provoked the destitution of Ventura Rodriguez and its substitution by Jaime Marquet, a French architect that had been trusted the project of paving the streets of Villa. Marquet proposed a building more alike to the style of the French neoclassicism, of simple volume and harmonic proportions, with double patio and with a façade that combined bricks, white stone and the granite used for its foundation. The main façade features a round arch, the balcony supported by lion-head corbels

and the pediment with the coat of arms of Carlos III, all adorned with elements inspired by antiquity such as garlands or the medallion with the head of Hercules covered with the Lion’s skin

The construction works began in 1760, but they ran into the Esquilache mutiny in 1766. In the end it was finished in 1768. In 1847 the Ministry of the Interior was established and a year later the optical telegraph, which was replaced shortly after by the electric. This acquires its current appearance with the construction of the turret that will shelter the famous clock, a gift that Losada made to Madrid in 1866. It is currently the seat of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid.

A year later the ‘Postal Trips’ continue in the center of Madrid in which places and building are discovered that have been significant to the history of Correos. The visit, that has an estimated duration of three hours, starts at Puerta del Sol, to continue by the Postas street and ends visiting the Royal House of Correos and the Royal House of Postas. To be able to participate, you must send an e-mail indicating your name, last name and DNI number to this direction: [email protected] The groups are limited to 25 persons. The visits that are made in identical fashion in Barcelona are also continuing. You can contact through [email protected]

SO IT WAS

9STAMPS AND MUCH MORE

The past April, the Plaza Mayor of Madrid hosted the National Stamp Fair, that has celebrated its 50th edition and whose main theme was related to said anniversary, the parallel actions o the world of the stamps were organized for the occasion. An event organized as every year by Correos with the collaboration of the National Association of Philatelic Entrepreneurs and Numismatic of Spain (ANFIL), the Royal House of the Currency – National Factory of the Currency and Stamps (FNMT) and the Townhall of Madrid.

The structure of the ephemeral architecture of the compound has been designed openly to the visitors, bigger than past years and respectful with the environment and the surroundings. The fair counts with the biggest numbers of stands of the main firms -because of the bigger demand of the businesses-, next to those of ANFIL, Correos and FNMT. The guest country also had its own space this year, Colombia.

For the commemoration of the 50th anniversary, the arcades of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid were reproduced inside the exhibition structure, which housed various spaces: a philatelic exhibition and a photographic exhibition, recounting a tour of the 50 editions celebrated. Likewise, the precinct also had an exhibition area of engravings with which it was intended to make known to the visitor the function of the Plaza Mayor as a place of ancient crafts. In order to recover these artisan activities, a chalcographic press was installed where the engravings were made by hand. Also, it was presented the classic and essential Giant postmark, in this case in the form of a roller, to be able to postmark the posters of the event.

In the outer perimeter, a replica of the statue of Felipe III covered with stamps and on a pedestal of more than 5 meters high awoke the admiration of all the visitors and curious that came nearby the plaza. And those who were encouraged to be photographed with their faces ‘inserted’ in a series of posters photocall of stamps of Star Wars or the Spanish Team of Handball. On the other hand, the winners of the raffle “Balloon Flights” were mounted in a ‘captive’ balloon that was raised on the 21st and 22nd. On a more philatelic theme, the issuance of a block sheet and an artist test in gold was carried out dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Fair. Three new products were also put on sale: The Millennium Falcon, together with the stamp of Han Solo, of Stars Wars, and two folders dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Felipe VI and the 50th edition of the Plaza Mayor Fair, with a stamp and a piece of Felipe III on horseback in 3D.

During the fair, Correos showed the joint work between Philately and the traditional and modern

techniques such as 3D stamps.

The new technologies will revolutionize philately

Correos will present during 2018 new innovations applied to the stamps

Year after year , the postal company presents new proposals of creative innovations and printed techniques that make a stamp a singular and unique element. It’s not only considered by the citizen as a holder of intrinsic values by its postal value, but as of now –that aesthetic attractive, of an elaborate and thought product in function of the theme to which it’s linked– has become in a coveted item of the collecting revalued by effects that allow to enjoy it in a manner until now unpublished. Everything, thanks to the

its concept has experienced an evolution in accordance to the development of the XXI

century society, of Correos and of Philately. The revolution has changed the way of making

and presenting the stamps, making them in a much more attractive item.

beneficially in the buyer who acquires these postal effects, since it will improve customer service times. These codes will be used for other information, storage or documentation processes.

This technological side of the stamp affects many other aspects, incorporating QR codes, emoticons or augmented reality, which allow its interconnection with other platforms. They also highlight the stamps with Tic (applications for mobile), with which Correos will make possible a new way of giving them animation. 2014 was the

new materials and the new technologies applied to the manufacture of stamps, which have allowed creative processes until now unimaginable.

This evolution of the stamp from a technological point of view does not only concern aesthetics or design. In order to improve the postal service, an application has been designed that will speed up and boost the work of Correos in the sale of stamps, especially in its branch network. The stamps will incorporate a barcode. Something that will redound

beginning of this ‘revolution’ and now the postal company goes a step further, as it will allow philatelists to touch the components of the stamps. In relation to the 3D application, the possibility that certain stamps can be printed with volume is being studied.

Regarding printing innovations, in 2018 Correos will once again issue stamps that stand out for their new materials. It will also innovate with new themes and reinforce its policy of constant evolution, trying to incorporate new techniques to update the stamps, but at the same time continue to maintain the special value of tradition, such as intaglio.

All these initiatives reinforce the notoriety and value of stamps and philately as an activity capable of generating products associated with stamps with interest and appeal for all types of public, which go beyond a specific field.

Textures, odors, movement… New supports to highlight:

· Puente de la Maza: with inner die in which the bridge will be seen as a reflection.

· Discoverers of Oceania: color printed on wood

· Chess: with thermochromic ink: when the pawn is touched, it changes from blanck to white.

The Puerta de Alcalá or the Bear and the Madroño were the protagonists of the stamp dedicated to Madrid of the series 12 months, 12 stamps, 12 provinces. The current president of the Community of Madrid, Ángel Garrido, and the president of Correos, Javier Cuesta presented it accompanied by other authorities in an act celebrated in the Royal Post House. Garrido remembered that this issue coincided with the 35th anniversary of the Statute of Autonomy of the Community: “Something that has allowed Madrilenians to build the society we want“. In contrast, Cuesta said that many letters during that month would carry the stamp: “The reason is that Madrid passes 55% of the mail from Spain. Besides, the 60 million philatelic collectors of the world will be able to know the Community thanks to this initiative“.

The stamp commemorating the achievement of the European Championship was presented by the president of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation, Francisco V. Blázquez; the president of Correos, Javier Cuesta Nuin; and the president of the COE, Alejandro Blanco, surrounded by all the components of the Hispanics, winners of the title of the 2018 European Championship of Croatia. During the event, the roadshow designed to commemorate the victory of the Hispanics was presented and held for children activities and games monitored by the players of Jordi Ribera.

The general director of the Youth of the government of Cantabria, Jorge Gutiérrez, the director of the Maritime Museum, Gerardo Castrillo, and the director of Philately of Correos, Modesto Fraguas, participate in the presentation of the stamp dedicated to this cultural and scientific institution. Gutiérrez noted the “artistic” value of the stamps and remarked their capacity for being “a transmission mean” of the Cantabrian heritage. In turn, Fraguas commented that the philatelic pieces “contain elements that tell us about our history and heritage”, that there are 30 series from the Museum Collection and that “the distribution of this type of stamps is worldwide”. Castillo mentioned that the stamp chosen contained the skeleton of the fin whale and the frigate model, as they are both centenary pieces and symbols of the heritage that this center hosts as museum.

León stars 12 months, 12 stamps, 12 provinces philatelic series. León means many things, some of which are captured by the letters LE. Maragatos. Entrepreneurial and travelling community that traded handcrafted products. Médulas. A beautiful landscape shaped by the gold-mining exploitations of the Roman Empire.Real Colegiata Basílica de San Isidoro. Its Royal Pantheon is a unique piece of work from the Romanesque world of the time. Episcopal Palace of Astorga. Designed by Gaudí, it’s currently the house of the Museo de los Caminos. León. Purple in color, it is the star of the historical coat of arms of the city. Maragato Stew. A recipe of three elements (meat, vegetables and soup) that provided warmth and energy after periods of hard work. Nicanores de Boñar. Made from puff pastry, original from the area of Boñar. Common Kingfisher. Fast in flight and small in size, its characterized by its colorful array of plumage. Chestnut Tree. The Bierzo area is full of millenary specimens brought by the Romans. The bottom part of the stamp is dark crimson honoring the province’s flag. LEÓN CATHEDRALThis Block sheet picks the motif that didn’t appear on the stamp dedicated to the province of León. The Cathedral, known as Pulchra Leonina, is one of the city’s icons and the first building declared as National Monument. In a French-influenced Gothic style, it was built in the 13th century on the ruins of Roman baths. It’s believed that its three architects were: Simon and Enrique both of French Origin (this explains its reminiscence to Notre Dame of the Saint Denis Basilica) and Juan Pérez. In the 19th century, Juan Madrazo and Demetrio de los Rios made the renovations that gave its current appearance, with sculpted porticoes, colorful stained glass and impressive rose windows and one of the olderst chancels in Spain. The block sheet shows the cathedrals main façade and the stamp is constituted by the center of it printed with different techniques: the central rose window was printed using silver offset and the pointed windows in cold foil, while the tympanum is embossed. The stamp and the glass windows are perforated.

It was in 1917 that a palace was inaugurated in Alcorcón, commissioned by the well-known Marqués de Valderas to the architect Luis Sainz de los Terreros. Shortly after, two smaller ones were built next to it. One of them would be used to house the private chapel under the name of San José, and the other as a residence for the castle’s employees. The buildings mix the style of the French castles with the mansions of the English field. Particularly noteworthy are its turrets and decorative battlements, as well as the presence of Renaissance windows, others of Gothic style and eaves of Mudejar descent.

Currently, the buildings in the residence are protected by the Law of Historical Heritage of the Community of Madrid by being senior and chapel buildings prior to 1936. In 2017, with the motif of the centenary of its opening, and with the petition of the Townhall of Alcorcon, the paperwork to make it an Asset of Heritage Interest begun.

The stamp that Correos issues inside the Artistic Heritage series, aims to get to know this architectural jewel that allows to ‘transport’ to the ribera del Loira or to the English Countryside . It shows a beautiful image of the castle with one of its impressive turrets in the foreground. The coat of arms of the locality and a band with its colours, remembers the recently celebrated centenary. The ‘ñ’ – that represents the brand Spain – will accompany this stamp in its trip all around the world.

In 1988, the 6th Marquis of Valderas donated the castles to the Alcorcón City Council and a reform project was commissioned to architects Enrique Fombella and Eduardo Paniagua in 1991. It currently houses the Alcorcón Glass Art Museum (MAVA), which exhibits works made in glass within the panorama of Spanish contemporary art.

With a die-cut booklet that has the profile of the north coast of the Peninsula, formed by eight self-adhesive stamps, Correos wishes to highlight the recognition by Unesco of the inclusion in the World Heritage List of ‘The Routes of Northern Spain’ as an extension of the French Way, already declared World Heritage in 1993.The Routes of Northern Spain are four routes that add 1,499 km to the 800km of the French Way and that extends through the Basque Country, La Rioja, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia. One of these routes is the Coastal Way, which has been highlighted in foil to illustrate the route. It starts in Irún and continues in the direction of Compostela, leaving an indelible trail in San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander and3 Gijón until entering Galicia. The stamp dedicated to the Coastal Way that passes through Galicia collects the image of the altarpiece of the entrance of the old Royal Hospital of Santiago made by the Catholic Monarchs, which is since 1986 a National Parador. In addition to the religious images an image of the the Catholic Kings also appears. In the background the silhouette of the Galician coast intersected by the Way is shown. An image of the Church of San Salvador de Valdedios de Villaviciosa in Asturias is the main image on the stamp dedicated to the Coastal Way of Asturias. Popularly known as «El Conventín», it is a great work of Asturian art and its exterior is of an admirable balance and beauty. Also, the coastal contour of the zone appears in the stamp. The zone of Cantabria appears on the stamp represented by the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana de Santillana del Mar. The relics of the Saint gave it its name. In its origins it constituted a Benedictine monastery, but in the eleventh century it acquired the rank of collegiate ruled by a community of canons of San Agustín. The Cantabrian coast can be seen in the background of the stamp. The part of the Way that passes through the coast of the Basque Country, collects a detail of the Monastery of Zenarruza in Bizkaia. In Cenarruza-Puebla de Bolívar, this is an important stop within the Way. The Basque coastline appears in the background.

Once again, this saga that is one of the most popular in the history of cinema, and with the greatest impact on society is the star of a stamp issued as part of the series dedicated to Cinema. The block sheet has as a main reference one of the most important characters of its movies and that, also, has its own film as a prequel. It’s about Han Solo, a smuggler who became the leader of the Alliance to restore the Republic and who played a key role in defeating the Galactic Empire.

His image is inevitably linked to his beloved ship, the Millennium Falcon, which appears on the block sheet in the form of a sketch, with some of its parts marked with annotations. Its ramshackle appearance has concealed extensive modifications, making it a high-speed craft with a hyperdrive engine that could outpace the Imperial Star Destroyers.

In the stamp a photograph of the actor Alden Ehrenreich appears, who plays Han Solo in the movie Han Solo: A Star Wars Story, which will be in cinemas soon. Previously, this character was played by Harrison Ford. In the first movies of the saga, a young Ford took on the role of this unique character, who goes on to marry Princess Leia and was essential to the development of the galactic story. It’s hard to think of Han Solo without his faithful companion Chewbacca, the Millennium Falcon co-pilot and fan favorite. George Lucas, the creator of the saga, drew inspiration from his great friend Francis Ford Coppola to create this character.

In 2015, in the movie Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens an older Han Solo was presented, 30 years after the Battle of Endor.

The first stone was laid down in the Plaza Mayor on the 2nd of December of 1617 outside the city walls, to host a food market in the city of Madrid for the occasion of the arrival of Philip III. For Correos, the Plaza Mayor in Madrid is even more important. The philately market, known as the Coins and Stamps Market, has been held there since approximately 1927, gathering avid collectors of philately and numismatics every Sunday. The Plaza Mayor has had a special relationship with stamps. Around the square and under the arches, in addition to bars and restaurants, there were many stamp and coin shops, many of which remain today. One of the most significant signs of this relationship is the National Stamp Fair, which this year will also celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The Plaza Mayor is one of the most emblematic spots in Madrid, a must go for tourists who come to the city and It’s also a place for many important shows and events. Many of the locals also associate the square with the run-up to Christmas, as every winter it turns into a magical place filled with lights and Christmas decorations. As Alexandre Dumas said, the Plaza Mayor was the theatre with the most beautiful vault in the world: the Madrid sky.

On the occasion of its 4th centenary, for all these reasons and many more, Correos is issuing a block sheet featuring an image of the façade of the Plaza, along with that of the House of Bread, and with reproductions of stamps in each of its windows. The commemorative stamp is a chalcography that depicts the early 17th century statue of Philip III in the center of the Plaza. It has been in the Plaza Mayor in Madrid since 1848, when Queen Isabella II ordered for it to be transferred from the Countryside House. The stamp appears on top of the pedestal that is also reproduced in the block sheet.

This series dedicated to the Graphic Humor and dedicated to the special celebration of the 25th edition of the International Comic Art Exhibition (MIAH) organized by the Quevedo Institute of Comic Arts (IQH), part of the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá. This block sheet contains a detail of one work from every edition held up to now. This makes a collective artwork framing the stamp itself, which features a fantastic caricature of Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas, masterfully drawn by Ricardo Martínez in March 1997 for the cover of Issue 0 of the Graphic Humour Information Magazine, Quevedos.

These are the authors that collaborate in the stamp, in order of publication: Ramón Gutiérrez; José M. Gallego and Julio Rey, Gallego y Rey; Antonio eraguas, Forges; Miguel Ángel García Laparra, Maikel; José Antonio Ortiz Fuster, Ortifus; César Oroz; Armengol Tosá Badia, Ermengol; José Arles Herrera, Calarcá; Antonio Mingote; Joaquín Aldeguer; José María Fandiño; David Vela; Orcajo; Santiago Almarza; Jaume Capdevila, Kap; Enric Arenós, Quique; Diego Doblas; Antonio Postigo; Carlos Villafranca Ortiz, Tres; José Luis Martín Zabala; Enrique Pérez Penedo; Carlos Romeu; José Manuel Puebla; David García Vivancos, DGV; and Ricardo Martínez.

Ricardo Martínez Ortega, 1956 (Chile), began working in the late 70’s, producing artwork for publications and advertising agencies in Miami. It was in Miami where he met Ignacio Moreno, with whom he created Goomer in 1987. Their character was published in El País and El Mundo with the byline “Ricardo & Nacho”. In 1989 Ricardo started working at El Mundo newspaper, where his work is still featured today. His work can be seen in various museums, including the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the National Library of Spain, and the Bill Clinton Library. He has also been awarded a number of prizes, including the 8 del Oro, the Madrid Tono Prize, the Haxtur Prize in Gijón, and the Gat Perich. One of his latest exhibitions, Politicians and Other Animals, was produced by the IQH and featured the work which is now on the stamp.

For another year, the European postal administrations and companies that are members of PostEurope have issued the Europe series with a common theme. This year, bridges is featured as the main theme.

The stamp that Spain issues is represented by the Bridge ‘La Maza de San Vicente de la Barquera’ (Cantabria). Built in the centuries 15th and 16th , it’s compounded by 28 sections with middle point arches and rounded levees. In its time, in which it used to have 32 arches, it was considered one of the largest and most important engineering works in the kingdom. It should be noted that previously there was another platform in place, made of wood and built in the sixth century. Its construction supposed a radical change in the communications of all the region, changing forever the urban morphology of San Vicente de la Barquera (Cantabria).

Taking into account its years, this bridge also has its own legends. The traditions says that , if you make a wish and you cross the bridge holding your breath, it will be conceded, that’s why it’s also knows as the Bridge of the Wishes.

This bridge facilitates the communications of the monumental village of San Vicente de la Barquera, one of the most beautiful municipalities of the Cantabrian coast. Its estuaries, its beaches, all framed in the Oyambre Natural Park, makes it a highly appreciated destination. Also for its churches and monuments, its festivals and customs, as well as its spectacular gastronomy.

The stamp and the premium sheet, that Correos issues for the Europe series, picks a panoramic view of the bridge, with the so typical green landscape of the Cantabrian lands. The silhouette of the bridge appears die-cut and, its image, can be seen reflected in the river. The stamp, besides the name of this architectural work of art, includes the logo of the Europe Series and the well-known letter ‘ñ’ that represents the brand of Spain.

TOLEDOIn the letter TO are the most emblematic elements of the province. Manhole Cover. Iron and Steel foundries. Marzipan, sweet treat, made from raw almonds that are peeled and grounded. Dulzaina. Double reed instrument belongs to the oboe family. Don Quixote. The chapter IX is dedicated to this city. Alcazar. Fortification that is the house of the of Museum of the Army. Saffron. With motif of the centenary of the inauguration of the Puente Nuevo de Orense, Correos issues a stamp the picks a beautiful illustration of it and that uses a set of colors that is a reference to that century of history that it has been seen the Miño river.

The works from the bridge were adjudicated the 14th of May of 1910 to Construcciones Hidraulicas y Civiles J, Eugenio Rivera y Compañia, from Bilbao, for 1.157.000 pesetas, the first stone being put in the Corpus celebration from that year, the 28th of May. The engineer Martin Diez de la Banda was the responsible of this great feat of civil engineering that incorporated advanced and new systems for the time.

The bridge is formed by six arches of ashlar masonry and a metallic section in the central part. With a complex arrangement, from left to right: three arcs of middle point; then, a parabolic guidewire triarticulated in the base and also in its supports, with a vault formed by four metallic ribs braced together; it is followed by a carpanel arch and a half-point arch. Stone from the village of Outeriz was used and the lampposts that decorate it are from a foundry of the Madrid workshops of Iglesias.

Today is one of the most used bridges of the city, with an important transit of pedestrians and rolling traffic. Its strategical situation and its strong structure, that has withstood the test of time, had made it an iconic piece in the architectonic heritage of Ourense.

The stamp is an homage to the Puente Nuevo, its history, its construction and also to the engineer Diez de la Banda, to whom the city of Ourense had to dedicated one of the nearby streets. It turns a 100 years old, a hundred years guarding a river and the life of this city.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup, or football World Cup, is holding its 21st edition in the Russian Federation. The competition will take place from 14th of June to 15th of July at 12 stadiums located in 11 different cities around the country, including Moscow, Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Saint Petersburg, Samara, Saransk and Sochi.

The tournament will bring together 32 national teams, distributed into eight groups, who will play a total of 64 matches in two rounds, with a group stage and a knock-out stage. The opening match will be Russia versus Saudi Arabia and will be played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, which will also host the final match.

The World Cup has a friendly mascot named Zabivaka, which means “little scorer”. He is a footballer wolf who radiates charm, confidence and friendliness; making him the perfect ambassador for sportsmanship in the competition. The design was chosen through an online popular vote.

The previous World Cup was held in Brazil in 2014, with Germany beating Argentina in the final match to win the tournament. With this trophy, Germany has now won four World Cups, tied with Italy; Argentina and Uruguay have won two each; and the national teams of England, France and Spain have won one each. Brazil remains the top winner with five World Cups.

The Football World Cup is one of the most important competitions in the world, in terms of the number of spectators that it brings together, the economic impact it can have on host countries, and the influence it currently has on our culture and society.

Correos is issuing a stamp presented on a Premium sheet featuring the official emblem of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

La Celestina Festival, that is held each year in the town of Montalban , has its origin in the year 1996 and between the 17th and 26th of august surrounds this town in a medieval halo with different representations of the work of Fernando de Rojas. During these days, the town turns to its celebrations. The most important representation is that which takes place in the Plaza Mayor. From there, actors and the public go through the streets until they reach the San Miguel tower, where the act ends late at night. Despite being a relatively young party, it has become very popular throughout the province of Toledo and there are also many visitors from the rest of Spain, and even from abroad, who take advantage of the summer holidays to live a unique experience.

In 1449 , in Burgos, the comedy of Calisto and Melibea appears. A piece that has 16 acts that started as the medieval elegiac comedy but had a different outcome: Calisto asks the help of Celestina to get the love of Melibea. After getting the love of his beloved, and after the execution of the procuress, Calisto has a terrible accident for which he dies miserable and Melibea, broken by grief, commits suicide by throwing herself from a tower.

There were other editions. For example, the one that is in the stamp represents the seventh edition, in Valencia, of Joan Joffre in 1514, and that is guarded in the Museum of La Celestina in the town of Montalban. This edition is the one that the experts consider the closest to the original . In addition to this illustration, the purple predominates in the stamp, since this color recalls the tradition and elegance typical of medieval times. A heart with a lock symbolizes that impossible love suffered by the protagonists of this great literary work of the Spanish Middle Ages. This stamp aims to get to know one of the many traditions that are celebrated in Spain.

150 years ago the first admiral of the United States Army – that played an important role in the American Civil War – fell in Ciudadela, birthplace of his father, where he was received with a multitude and was named by the townhall as ‘adoptive son’ to show appreciation to such a “brave marine”.

He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1801, under the name of James. Son of Jorge Farragut and Elizabeth Shine. His father was captain of a merchant ship of Menorca and, later, in 1766, he emigrated to the United States, where he joined the revolutionary cause and, in addition, changed his name to George Farragut. After the death of his mother, James Farragut agreed to live as the adopted son of David Porter, naval officer friend of his father. Since then, he grew up in a naval family, as the adoptive brother of the future Admiral of the Civil War, David Dixon Porter, and Commodore William D. Porter. In 1812, he adopted the name of David in honor of his adoptive father, with whom he went to the navy at the end of 1810.

Despite his souther precedence, Farragut considered a betrayal any secessionist act and took way for the northern states of the Union, in the meridional fronts of the Confederation. The 5th of august of 1864 he participated in the battle of Mobile Bay (Alabama), the last open port of the Confederation to the Gulf of Mexico. It was there that they say that he pronounced the most famous phrase of the war: “Fuck the torpedoes! Full speed! “ His popularity was such that even Jules Verne was inspired by him to give life to Commodore Farragut in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

The stamp picks an image of the admiral, and in the background, a portrait guarded in the Military Museum of Mernoca with the name Vista de la Ciutat de Maho, prese de la part de Cala Rata, from the 17th century, that shows the Poniente en Mahon bay.

ESCRIPTION

The 25th November 1968 , thanks to the efforts of Conrado Durántez, the first Spanish Olympic Academy was established in Madrid in the image of the International Olympic Academy that had been founded seven years earlier in Olympia (Greece). There are currently 146 such official academies operating worldwide that, together with the one in Olympia, aim to spread and advocate for the philosophical values of the Olympic movement as conceived by the renovator of the modern Games, French educator Pierre de Coubertin. The Spanish Olympic Academy, a pioneer in its field, has been an example followed by many great National Olympic Academies in other countries. This leadership was the spark behind the founding of the Pan-Iberian Association of Olympic Academies (APAO) in 1988, with sole recognition from the International Olympic Committee (ICO), and which includes 26 academies in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Europe, America and Africa. Likewise, it has been organizing a large number of Olympic educational activities since its beginnings. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the Honorary President of the Spanish Olympic Academy King Phillip VI kindly bestowed it the title of “Royal”, affirming the Spanish monarchy’s historical commitment to the Olympic movement and its Academy, and making it the first in the world to hold such a title. The Spanish Royal Olympic Academy has also contributed to the founding of several institutions to study and promote the Olympic movement, such as the Olympic studies centers , the Spanish Pierre de Coubertin Committee and the Spanish Olympic Philately Union (UEFO), that promotes stamp issues, like the stamp of Pierre de Coubertin. To keep adding value to the Olympic Philately and with the motif of the golden anniversary of this institution, this stamp is issued that, besides the 50th anniversary logo with the Royal Academy coat of arms, shows a simple and colorful illustration that captures the effort and perseverance that Olympic sports represent. Correos is a strong supporter of sport, and is issuing this new stamp in praise of the Olympic movement and all its values that we share.

Inside the Civic Values series this stamp is issued, but with different characteristics, because it will be the first solidary stamp. Correos will participate in this social project by donating the quantity of the total 3% of the revenue of the sale of this stamp. The stamp will be presented in the format stamp + vignette and in premium sheet.

The selected project for this 2018 was proposed by United Hands coinciding with the celebration of their 60th anniversary: Educational Strengthening and child and juvenile violence prevention with children from the Step by Step Program , and the prevention of juvenile violence using socio-educational resources for minors and families in situations of social risk from the sector Rivera Hernández, San Pedro Sula. Honduras. The project will be running until April 2019 the following actions: support and extra-scholar following actions and psycho-medical attention to 170 children and teenagers; formational sessions and commentaries activities aimed to 50 parents that will actively participate in the center, making a total of 220 people that will be benefited directly from the program. In addition, the project aims to prevent youth violence through awareness-raising activities in the neighborhood, such as the Defense of Life week, the Good-Living week...

The stamp is an illustration in which a scene appears that shows the bond of a mother with her son highlighting the bright colors in the clothes of the mother typical of the clothing of this region. In the vignette appears for the first time the badge that will carry all the solidarity stamps made up of a heart with teeth and inside of it there’s a cleat.

GUILLERMINA MARTÍNEZ CABREJAS (Mariemma) was born in Íscar (Valladolid) on 10 January 1917 and died in Madrid on 10 June 2008.She is one of the great figures of 20th century dance: performer, choreographer, teacher, entrepreneur and researcher. At the age of nine, she starts her studies in classical dance. Her studies in Spanish dance and music will enable her to dance and teach from her technique. For it, she establishes a clear order based in the four forms of the Spanish dance: Bolero, Folklore, Flamenco, and Stylised Dance. She formed her first company in 1955, with which she toured the best stages in the world and was a guest star and choreographer in prestigious theatres such as La Scala in Milan. Her legacy as a choreographer includes unique works for solo dancers and groups: Córdoba, Andaluza, Barcarola, Malagueña, Danza y Tronío, España e Ibérica… Correos joins the celebration for the centenary of this artist with a stamp featuring a photograph of Mariemma in the 60s, in which she is performing on stage, with her back to the camera and a spotlight in the background, dressed in the Flamenco style, with the whole scene being framed in a Spanish guitar silhouette, combining dance and music.GLORIA FUERTESWith some verses of the poem that gave the title to her first book, Isla Ignorada (1950), inside a stamp, Correos wants to remind the contribution of this woman to the Spanish literature, poetu , and above all, to children. Her poems have served to illustrate the lives of several generations: ‘La gallinita en su gallinero’, ‘La araña de España’ or the ‘La oca loca’. Born in the working-class district of Lavapiés in a very humble family, she soon began to work to help her family out, typing addresses and charging a cent for each envelope. Between typing and reading she found time to write poems. The stamp shows a beautiful portrait of the writer with her white hair and unforgettable smile. This image consists of texts from some of her most famous poems.¡She died the 27th of November of 1998 and her epitaph resumes her life: “I think I’ve said it all / And that I’ve already loved it all”.

Correos is issuing a stamp dedicated to Civic Values, a series of principles that all citizens should follow, respect and share. These stamps have expressed important values, such as solidarity, diversity and creativity.

This year, the issue is dedicated to people who are deafblind, and in particular, to the celebration of the international day of deafblindness. People who are deafblind have two sensory impairments (visual and hearing). They suffer from communication problems and have a range of special needs, including specially trained care staff and special communication methods to cope with daily living activities.

The stamp features the image of Helen Keller, who was left deafblind and unable to speak after a childhood illness. These limitations caused her to invent more than sixty signs to be able to communicate with her family from an early age. Her parents consulted with Alexander Graham Bell himself, who advised them to contact Professor Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen to think intelligibly and speak, using the Tadoma method: touching the lips of others while they speak, feeling the vibrations, and spelling out the alphabetic characters in the palm of the communicator’s hand. At 24, she graduated cum laude from Radcliffe College, where Anne Sullivan had translated every word in her hand, and became the first deaf person to graduate from college. Helen, with her great willpower, was an internationally renowned speaker and author. She always fought for the sensory impaired, and that is why she founded Helen Keller International.

The stamp also includes the image of the red and white cane, which identifies people with deafblindness and the phrase “Touch the life” is printed to the touch.

With a block sheet shaped like a ‘tilde’, and with a die cut stamp with the silhouette of this so-spanish like distinctive, Correos homages the Hispanics , to whom have been champion in the 2018 European Championship in Croatia.

The european champion team was made up by: Arpad Šterbik, Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas, Rodrigo Corrales, Ferrán Solé, David Balaguer, Ángel Fernández, Aitor Ariño, Valero Rivera, Daniel Sarmiento, Joan Cañellas, Raúl Entrerríos, Viran Morros, Julen Aguinagalde, Gedeón Guardiola, Adrià Figueras, Eduardo Gurbindo, Iosu Goñi, Alex Dujshebaev, Daniel Dujshebaev and Jordi Ribera as head coach.

Sweden, the team they played against during this long-awaited final match, proved a worthy rival but could not match the Spanish team’s intense energy, which carried them to victory at 29-23. Curiously, Spain played its first handball match in 1953 against Sweden, in Madrid, which was won by the Scandinavians; 55 years later, in Arena Zagreb, the two teams were pitted against one another once again, but this time it was Spain that triumphed.

This victory was the highlight of an excellent record set by Spain’s men’s handball team. Following three silver medals in the European championships, this gold medal raised them to the very top of the sport in the old continent. This victory is much more than a mere triumph, it is proof that this team, its style of play and its will to succeed will be bringing plenty of cheer to future competitions. The joy and celebrations of the hispanos extend to Correos, which has full confidence in those on this journey.

The frill-shaped ‘tilde’ block sheet features the picture of the winning team, proudly celebrating their gold medal, with the 2018 European Championships trophy standing out on the stamp .

HOBBIESChess

Chess has numerous values. It’s art, culture, strategy, competition, discipline, hobby, work, intelligence and above all a game where the mind is working non stop meanwhile the match is still going. Correos issues this premium sheet inside the Hobby Series to this ancestral game, friend of silence and concentration, that has so many fans all around the world.

The premium sheet represents a chess board and its pieces. The stamps are represented by the black pawns, printed with thermochromic ink. When you pass your finger on top of them, they change color turning in white pawns. The printed text in each stamp, name and face value, also the typical symbols in the philatelic issues , are printed in this type of ink, which provokes a change in the color of this inscriptions.

Philately and chess share many aspects. They require dedication, attention and study. Also chess, as happens with stamps, is an object of collection. There are many fans of this mental sport that are dedicated to collecting different boards, sets of pieces of materials such as wood, glass or even gold. There are pieces with allegorical motifs, with comic characters or soccer players.

Two face to face opponents, sometimes unending matches, put the minds to the test, to their intelligence, and above all, the capacity of executing strategies that allow to take the match home. This noble game, that today is used in many schools as a pedagogical method, helps opening the mind and squeeze it to the maximum, and it gives fruitful wonderful plays. Chess players as famous as Anatoly Karpov, say that the ‘chess is everything: art, science and sport’.

Encounter of the director of Philately of Correos of Spain with the directors of Latin-American postal service

Deal with the challenges that have to be faced during the presidency of UPAEP Philately, value the

possibility of organizing a congress of the organization or to exchange ideas to the development of

the philately has been one of the important objectives in the meetings.

What is the situation of philately in each country? In the meeting between the Spanish and Colombian postal services, it was considered to have a basic knowledge of the situation in which the philately

is in each country to generate actions adjusted to the reality. In this sense, two complimentary lines of actions were proposed: a philatelic study in the

countries and a Philatelic Encounter Forum of the UPAEP. Actions that will be informed in the next editions of Stamps and Much more.

From the beginning of this year, the Spanish Correos- next to the Colombian one- assumed the direction of the Workgroup of the Philately of the Postal Union of the America, Spain and Portugal (UPAEP) giving a takeover to Argentina. A co-presidency to which Argentina, Ecuador, México, Paraguay, Perú and Uruguay have joined as members, which will also form part of the working group.

For this reason, the director of Philately of Correos, Modesto Fraguas, met in Colombia with his homonym, Martha Giraldo, to define how to deal with the challenges that they want to be undertake. In Uruguay -HQ of UPAEP- tried to organize a philatelic congress, only missing the outline to be sent to the rest of the members with the lines of action, and having as base the proposal present by the Spanish Correos to the Congress. And in Argentina, the postal entity was visited to make the ‘takeover’ sharing some ideas with the responsibles of Philately, Adriana Vaccaro, Silvia Acevedo and Marina Scotto.

The meeting of co-presidents during the visit to Colombia must be highlighted. In it the first action points were specified, which will be announced in upcoming issues of Stamps and Much More. Decisions that can be divided into actions related to a structural and organizational point of view and directly operational, all designed to boost a little rusty structures and create new tools for work and coordination between the countries of this organization supranational.

Between the first pages, it was indicated to the secretary of UPAEP to update the contact

information of the responsibles of philately to normalized the recognition and identification of the job posts, postal and electronic directions , and normalized the information via the UPAEP web, make a formal presentation of the ideas of the workingroup and, if its line of action is agreed upon, inform the entire organization; create a regulation that involves all members in the issuance of stamps; and preserve the stamp as identity signature of each email that makes up the UPAEP as cultural heritage of each country, which implies the activation of issues.

With studies of Image and Script, Ignacio

doing it previously for some Spanish producers.

The stamps had never appealed to me. I am very young and my hobbies are similar to those of other kids of my age: going out with friends, going to parties or going to the movies, having drinks and listening to music from time to time. Immersed recently in the world of work, my profession as a screenwriter has brought me closer to film and books, separating me from everyday activities like buying comics or records.

What I have always been is a great soccer fan. My father and close relatives are partners or followers of two teams in the capital: Real Madrid and Atleti; However, I already chose as a little guy for one with a few handles for a Madrid urbanite, Villarreal CF, and also for an obsession based perhaps on the latest successes of the Spanish national football team.

I have seen few countries that, for different reasons, distinguish especially both categories. Not long ago the Royal Mail put into circulation a series that highlighted the best players in the British Isles.

My collection, by being modest, - I cant consider me being a philatelic -, it’s simply a recount of stamps that reminds, in scraps covered of images and glue, instants, flashings of memories that are unique in the history of my life. I don’t know how much more I will continue to collect this special stamps of sporting stories. The golden age of Spanish football, which treasures trophies and awards, will surely have an end, which seems like it may not be far away. A lead age may soon come, in which interest in the so-called king sport will fall in popularity. I do not know if with time I will follow all these events so closely or the years will take me away from the things that today seem fundamental to me. What I certainly will not lose, are the few stamps that I keep as a form of photographs that will shape the memories of my life in the future.

I agree with the sentence that we can change jobs, partners or even countries but impossible to change football teams, its in the blood. In the other hand, football does not mean, in my opinion, only fandom or extreme attitudes that bring out the lower instincts, but we must rather treasure other values that represent the best of us and our society: competitiveness, perseverance, joint effort and spirit of a team, that throughout our existence almost always become fundamental to reach great goals.

And the stamps arrivedInvestigating, I’ve seen that, inside the stamps issued by Correos , there are more than thirty stamps dedicated to football. Between them, there are some that commemorate the centenary of several Spanish team, the World Cup in Spain 82, the silver medal of football in the Olympic Games in 92, the 25th anniversary of the King’s Cup , the centenary of the FIFA or the victories of the UEFA in Austria 2008, South Africa World Cup in 2010 and the UEFA 2012.

Step by step, I have been getting them. Also, moved by curiosity, I have increased my small collection with other effects, from other countries, which echoed the World Cup won by Spain. Subsequently, I have also been interested in other world events: UEFA Cups, Cups of America, Football Olympics and other international events. It has been more difficult for me to obtain stamps that refer to soccer players or clubs. Apart from the Spanish initiative to highlight the football teams that have more than a hundred years of history,

A world of HeroesThe stamps as a fandom arrived when my father gifted me, in 2011, a philatelic book dedicated to the Spanish Football Team, ’History of the Spanish Football Team: Red Fury’, that picks the combined sotry of its origins until the triumph in the world cup of South Africa. The book reenacts stages of the team. When I was 17, I thought it was subjugating, each section was accompanied with a stamp that illustrated the different times. And I quote this book because since its first stamp, the footballer Pichichi, made a tour in the history of this sport. Ricardo Zamora, whom I know only by name, was highlighted in other pages. Another milestone was in the world cup of Brazil in 1950, when Telmo Zarra scored his famous goal. That decisive moment has also been immortalized in a stamp.

PHILATELY AND MORE

LAST SUBSCRIBER

What has encouraged you to subscribe?Since I was little I felt attracted to the philately, although in an amateurish manner: I collected the stamps and stored them without much harshness. The lack of time and the difficulty of obtaining stamps made me leave them aside, now that I try to retake it by subscribing to the philatelic products of Correos, to collect in a more professional way, or, at least more organized. Has any family member promoted the interest? An aunt always collected stamps and she has a great collection. The first time that I considered that the philately was something big was when she gave me her repeated stamps, and it was that moment that I started to buy albums to have them organized. How do you consider the stamp?I think that it is more than a ‘stamp’, it’s art, it’s history, it’s culture, it’s a mean of communication, of promotion… an element that forms part of the culture and history of all of the world.

What product would you highlight?I consider as a basic the annual summary, very explicative and complete. The philately has evolved a lot and the current product lineup is humongous. Do you collect other products? I also collect coins, before of being pesetas and now euros, and when I travel I tend to bring them over, as a souvenir. Are you a user of the web of Correos?I used the webpage only to get information on the philatelic themes and made all the orders and processes personally, but once you get used to the webpage it becomes very comfortable and simple, so I use the webpage now. Do you believe that the information of the Philatelic Service is enough?I think it’s very complete, especially on the web. For those who don’t know philately or aren’t interested, it is likely to go unnoticed, but I don’t know how to attract more people.

One hundred years ago the women’s vote was obtained in the United Kingdom. For this reason, the mail of that country has issued a series of eight stamps of different rates, commemorating it. The images of the stamps refer to significant moments of the British women vote.

The result of a design competition organized by the Austrian newspaper Die Presse and the mail of that country, has issued the stamp with face value. The title of it is ‘Two Faces’ and makes reference to the generational conflict and the coexistence of the old and the new.

The present postal market is impactedby dynamic changes of the modern world. Therefore, smooth communication among postal stakeholders is of value. This role has been perfectly performed by the Posteurop, which has been representing European postal operators for 25th years. The Association has been focused on supporting and developing a sustainable European postal communication market. Within PostEurop, there are committees and working groups which oversee a wide range of activities common issues and topics which affect the postal industry. One of them is the Stamps & Philately Working Group, a group of philatelic experts representing European postal administrations. The aim of the working group is to promote stamps and philately in general and the Europa stamps in particular, selecting the themes of the upcoming stamps issues and monitor any developments that may affecting this field.

Since its very beginning in 1956, Europa stamp is one of the most well-known and popular stamps issues among philatelists in the world. In other words, EUROPA stamp is one of the strongest brands on the philatelic market, and effectively plays a part in building the image of PostEurop and Europe in the world. Several Europa themes depicted on postage stamps reflect the richness of our continent’s cultural, historical and social heritage. On the one hand, they refer to the common roots of all the associated states, and on the other hand, they give every postal administration an opportunity to present their own cultural identity through an individual artistic language. At the level of international cooperation Europa stamps become a platform for building European integration, as well for business and cultural dialogue.

The theme for this year, 2018 is ”Bridges”, and it is very interesting how individual countries have interpreted this year’s Europe stamps theme. It is certainly important to choose the right example of bridge in the context of industrial heritage,

communication and social functions or even technological solutions. We observe the most outstanding works of engineering constructions from the earliest times to the present. Another important aspect is design, a way of presenting the subject from artistic expression to a modern approach. Each stamp reveals a different world of the individuality of a country, giving us the opportunity to learn about the richness of the diversity of European heritage.

As the PostEurop is organizing competitions on the most beautiful Europa stamp 2018, we invite you to take a look at this year’s entries and vote for your favorite stamp on www.posteurop.org/europa2018. The online competition lasts from 9 May till 9 September 2018.

At the moment we are looking forward to our latest event, the “PostEurop Philatelic Industry Forum 2018” in Krakow, Poland, on 16-17 May 2018, co-organized by the Poczta Polska S.A. The bi-annual Philatelic Forums organized by PostEurop Stamp & Philately Working Group have attracted a lot of interest among postal operators and the philatelic trade, the past years.

This year Forum takes on a new approach. For the first-time representatives of postal administrations and philatelic market stakeholders, will be able to establish new contacts and business opportunities. We are expecting two days of inspiring presentations, fruitful discussions, networking, creative projects and philatelic novelties. They have been present, among others, collectives of the world: postal administrations, printing houses, album manufacturers, producers for other collectables, stamp agencies, stamp magazines, stamps artists, designers, others.

The Stamps & Philately working group will continue our endeavor to make Philately a thing of the present. We look to engage members and the larger philatelic community alike in our future activities.
