Standard Operating Procedure – Nipple Up/Down Job Box and Moving the BOP

1. Purpose

The common thread throughout the SOP and HWD Policies and Procedures in general is

the identification of responsibilities. This manual is intended to clearly and concisely

identify the steps required by employees to complete any given operation in a manner

that is consistent with Horizontal Well Drillers standards. It will document progressive

steps required in sequence that are to be followed, an authorizing company department or

position, and an author that is to be consulted if there are questions in any portion of the

SOP standards.

4. Start by taking an inventory of all items included in the job box. Periodically or

before nippling up or down, check to ensure all items are available for the operation.

5. The job box should include:

-proper rings

-BOP nuts and bolts

-all necessary hammer wrenches

-Finger Saver device

-valve handles

-hydraulic plugs and quick disconnects

6. All BOP nuts and bolts should be properly cleaned and anti-seize applied to them

prior to the operation.

7. Once the job box is confirmed to contain all necessary equipment, may one continue

to Nipple up or down.

8. Ensure that pre-job safety meeting is conducted and JSA is properly filled out prior to

any work being performed.

9. Proceed by moving the Pipe handler out of the way. If the job box is not permanently

attached to the sub structure, it may be located next to the cellar for easy access.

10. All necessary tools and equipment are to be contained in the job box to streamline

the Nipple Up or Down process. Hands should not be required to seek tools from other

areas of the rig.

11. Prior to moving the BOP, Tool pusher must ensure the nipples are removed and

replaced with 1” plugs.

12. When lifting the BOP it is extremely important that you DO NOT wrap your lifting

slings around the BOP door rams. Doing this will bend the rams, which in turn will

result in costly repairs.

13. Whenever the Annular is not attached it is paramount that you use the proper lifting

device with lifting eyes. The lifting eyes will distribute the weight of the BOP evenly

and will not damage the rams.
