Stanford Medicine and Intermountain Healthcare have formed a newcollaboration to support innovative projects in research, patient care, andmedical education. Minor,MD, Dean of Stanford University School of Medicine. “They have done thisthrough a long-term investment in sophisticated medical information systemsand system-wide programs that advance consistent use of best practices thatproduce excellent clinical outcomes at sustainable pricing for patients andpayers. We are very pleased to embark on an even closer relationship withIntermountain that will be strengthened in the years ahead, for the benefit ofour patients and the physicians we are training for the future.”

“We will work with colleagues at Stanford to more rapidly assess newtreatment modalities and move these into the care of our patients,” saidCharles Sorenson, MD, President and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare. “Weexpect more research, collaborative studies, and teaching relationships willfollow in the near future.”

Researchers at Stanford and Intermountain already are working together onseveral projects, including research in cancer genomics, clinical studies ofatrial fibrillation and cognitive function, and studies in applied clinicalinformatics. In addition, Intermountain has served as a pilot site for a Stanfordproject on “ambulatory care ICUs,” a new form of outpatient care to preventcostly and dangerous health crises among patients with severe, chronicillness. The project is led by Arnold Milstein, MD, Director of Stanford’s ClinicalExcellence Research Center, who serves on the board of Intermountain.

Intermountain’s approach to populationhealth is featured in The New York Times

A major story in The New York Times featured the new SelectHealth Shareinsurance plan and Intermountain’s transformative approach to health andcare. The title: “A Novel Plan for Health Care: Cutting Costs, Not RaisingThem.”

According to the article, “Health systems and insurers are closely watchingIntermountain’s rollout. It has established itself as a leading health system bytracking and analyzing costs and the quality of patient care, allowing it toimprove treatments and reduce unnecessary expenses.” The article notedIntermountain’s savings to the tune of $2 billion over the next five years—savings that remain in the community in the form of lower premiums and otherlower costs to consumers and businesses.

One early manifestation of the progress Intermountain is making is theinnovative SelectHealth Share product, which launched with large employergroups in January. SelectHealth Share provides a guaranteed premiumincrease of only four percent in years two and three of the three-year contract.The plan is based on Intermountain’s Shared Accountability approach, whichinvolves commitments from all parties involved in healthcare—patients,3/3/2016 *|MC:SUBJECT|*

“We have not seen anything similar from other providers,” Lana Jensen, apersonnel management manager with Utah County, told the Times. “This isworth a try.” The article also quoted Dave Jackson, managing partner forFirstWest Benefit Solutions in Orem, Utah, saying Intermountain’s plan is “thefirst innovative thing we’ve seen in a long time. Share has got everybody at thetable—everybody’s got accountability and got things to do.”

The visitors included health officials from the French government andreporters from Le Point (a French magazine similar to Time magazine):Christian Foury, Official Representative, Mission for European andInternational Relations and Cooperation, French National Health InsuranceFund; Annie Fourard, Medical Advisor, French National Health Insurance Fundand Head of the Hospitalization Department; Jerome Vincent, MD, internistand journalist for Le Point; and François Malye, health economist reporter forLe Point.

Foury said Intermountain is “considered highly in the world. You are good atquality and lower costs, and that is why we are very interested.”

2016 Utah legislative session continues

Bill Barnes of Intermountain’s Government Relations office provides thefollowing update on the 2016 Utah legislative session:

We are now in the fifth week of the Utah legislative session.  While somedecisions have been made, many big issues are still unresolved.  The HospitalMedicaid Assessment reauthorization has passed both houses and awaits thegovernor’s signature.  We are hopeful that Medicaid will be appropriatelyfunded for FY2017.  The medical marijuana issue is still being debated, andother issues are still hanging.  The legislature will adjourn on March 10, and afull update will be available shortly thereafter.

Trustees can stay up to date with the 2016 session of Utah’s state legislatureby using the Intermountain Health Policy Network, a subscription servicecreated by Intermountain Healthcare that allows you to sign up for emailupdates and “calls to action” regarding issues. Awards and recognitionIntermountain Medical Center earns designation as ComprehensiveStroke Center

Intermountain Medical Center is the only hospital in Utah—and one of only 96in the U.S.—to be named a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The JointCommission. The designation means the hospital has demonstrated anexemplary ability to use evidence-based clinical processes to improve careand outcomes for stroke patients.

Intermountain Medical Center is the only hospital in Utah—and in Idaho,Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona or New Mexico—that’s earned thedesignation from The Joint Commission. University of Utah Hospital received asimilar designation, but it is accredited through a different organization, DNVGL–Healthcare.

Rob Allen recognized as Top 50 Rural Hospital CEO

Becker’s Hospital Review recently highlighted “50Rural Hospital CEOs to Know” and included RobAllen, CEO of Park City Medical Center and RegionalVice President of Intermountain’s Park City-HeberValley Region.

According to Becker’s, the people on the list “havedemonstrated dedication to providing high-quality,accessible care to their communities.” It alsomentions that many of the executives “have eitherreceived rural healthcare accolades or led their

organization to a status worthy of awards and recognition.”

For this list, “rural” was defined as being located outside a major metropolitan

Becker’s Hospital Review published its 2016 list of“100 Hospital and Health System CIOs to Know” andincluded Marc Probst for the fourth consecutive year.According to the article, the CIOs on the list “areleading their organizations through healthcare’stechnology revolution, overseeing EHR installations,new patient portals and telemedicine advancementswhile working to keep data secure from breaches,among countless other priorities.”

Intermountain Precision Genomics core lab receives CAP accreditation

Intermountain Precision Genomics announcedthat its core laboratory facility has receivedaccreditation from The College of AmericanPathologists (CAP). The CAP classification is ascientifically rigorous checklist of requirementsthat indicate laboratories worldwide candemonstrate excellence in laboratory practicesand inspire confidence in patient care.

Dr. Pravin Mishra, Clinical Laboratory Directorfor Intermountain Precision Genomics, spoke highly of the scientificbackground and experience at the lab. He said, “This successful CAPinspection allows us to solidify what we are offering for cancer patients, lookto the future, start developing other assays for liquid biopsy, and perhapsdouble our gene panel for other diseases.”
