THE IFP spokesperson on Healthin KwaZulu-Natal, NcamisileNkwanyana swooped in on

StangerHospitalarmedwithanentou-rage of journalists on Thursday look-ing for answers on the latest scandalsrocking the hospital.

There was no shortage of accusa-tions as Nkwanyana continued refer-ringtothehospitalasa“butchery”dur-ing the visit seeking answers on casesof negligence that have made head-lines in recent weeks.

The visit was triggered by the deathof Thembekile Mkhize, a mother whodied shortly after giving birth as a re-sult of herbowel beingpunctureddur-ing a caesarian-section procedure.

After attending a meeting withmembers of the hospital board, whowere not prepared for her visit as shehadnotnotifiedthem,shefurthervent-edherfrustrationswiththepressatthehospital.

Amongher grievances is her skepti-cism of the skills of the doctor whopuncturedMkhize’sbowelwhichledtoher death.

“What Iwould like to know is if thedoctor who performed the surgeryhas been suspended,” she said.

“Is he a doctor-in-training becausethat would be unacceptable. How doyoupunctureotherorgansandnot seethat when performing a caesarian-section? It is just unacceptable.”

She further listed other allegationsdirected at the hospital including a“deadly” TB ward and “lazy” nurses.

“From what I have heard, the TBward experiences three deaths a dayand this is as a result of patients beinggiven treatment on empty stomachs,”she said.

Without stating fromwhere she gotthe information, Nkwanyana contin-

ued with the gruesome allegations:“Patients are beingmistreated by lazynurses especially at night who sleepduring their shifts.”

She then suggested that a rule beimplemented to prevent nurses fromcarrying mobile phones at the hospi-tal.

“They must not be allowed to usecellphones during working hours. Ifthey need to contact someone theyshould use the hospital’s landline.”

When the Weekly later spoke tomembers of the hospital board, theyclaimed to be unaware of Nkwanya-na’s “wild” allegations.

Speaking at the Stanger Hospitalboardroom, the hospital board, whichwas led by KwaDukuza Municipalityspeaker Thulani Khuluse, addressedthe media at a briefing on Friday.

“As to whether there is someone atfault here, we cannot preempt the re-sultsof the investigationsoat thisstageno one has been suspended,” he said.

Responding to theWeekly, Khuluseexplained that the investigation waslaunched as the result of “negative”

Job opportunities centrebrought to iLembe>> Business tycoon pays if forward

DURBAN business tycoon Vivian Reddygave a gift to the iLembe District forhis birthday this month.

Reddy has committed to establish a JobOpportunity Centre in KwaDukuza which isprojected to train more than 3 000 peoplea year.

The centre will cost R6 million to establish and a further R1.5 million to run annuallyand is due to open its doors in three months.

The centre will be staffed by 30 trainedprofessionals who will serves as mainlytrainers.

Reddy signed a deal with KwaDukuza

mayor Ricardo Mthembu and municipalmanager Nhlanhla Mdakane on Friday.

Usually Reddy hosts parties for 10 000disadvantaged children, however, this yearReddy said he wanted to do something different. “Having reflected on the costs ofhosting such an event, we concluded thatalthough 10 000 disadvantaged childrenhave a great, enjoyable day, it’s a oneoffevent that soon fades. Only one child a yearbenefits longterm.”

Reddy said the training centre would ensure more people benefitted in the longterm. “The rationale is if we train and equip

parents and siblings of disadvantaged families, we will equip them with a skill to earna decent wage so that their families can livebetter lives.”

The centre would provide expert servicesto job seekers to help them become moreemployable and to link them with appropriate work opportunities.

It would be managed and operated byorganisations that are skilled and experienced and would focus primarily on entrylevel unskilled and semiskilled candidates.

Key job opportunity areas addressed bythe centre include labourintensive sectorssuch as retail, hospitality, construction andmanufacturing.

An excited Mthembu thanked Reddy forthe initiative.“You areindeedagreathumanbeing to be doing this for our people. Ourcountry needs more people like you.”

The centre will offer:1. A job information centre2. Job seeker support services (e.g. ob

taining IDs, bank accounts, writing CVs, etc.)3. Life skills/work readiness training4. Maths/English literacy training/sup

port5. Volunteer service coordination6. Job and training placement (with a

strong focus on placing people into technical skills programmes through the SETAsand the public FET colleges)

7. Social services/counselling8. Monitoring and trackingThese services will enable aspiring work

seekers to obtain employment and to risethe ladder quickly once they do.

WATER Rhapsody franchisee Neilde Groot is based in UmhlangaKZN and ready to be of service to

you in all things of water conservation andpurification as well as some incredible energy products to help you reduce your energy bill or even go off the grid.

He is qualified as an aeronautical engineer and has found his passion throughwater and energy, taking everything asgreen as he can.

“I have a high standard of work andintegrity, and doing the job right the firsttime is always my main objective.”Need a water tank?

Rainwater harvesting is fast becominga common household discussion in KZNwhere dam levels are at an all time low.

While having a water tank is a greatidea, it’s how you fill it and what you dowith it that counts. KZN Water energy offers you a number of installation optionsto suit your needs and pocket. From topping up a watering can with a hose, topumping that water out via a sprinkler forgarden irrigation or washing the car, all theway to sending your free harvested rainwater back into the home so you can bath, shower or wash your hands with it, we cando it all.

Our system of filtering the rainwater atsource means only clean water reaches thewater tank. In turn this minimises themaintenance requirements of your tank, and the quality of water stored increasesthe options for use. Plenty of our customers drink and cook with this water.

Some interesting questions and answersaboutwaterconservationandpurification:Q: How do I make a rainwater harvestingsystem pay for itself and why should I notjust harvest rainwater for irrigation.

A: Simply by collecting and using waterharvested during the rain season and usingthis water in your whole household, thetank surges full very rapidly, but you drawwater from the system every time you opena tap, flush the loo, or use the washing machine, or any other use of water. It removesthe romantic notion of filling a water tankand not knowing what to do with the water, or trying to fill a water tank with harvested rainwater that is full already! We also make sure that you don’t unnecessarilyinstall too many rainwater tanks so thatthese never have enough roof area andrainfall to fill. I.e. you draw them as fast asthey recharge.

Q: Why do you recommend collectingrainwater?

A: There are as many environmentalreasons associated with rainwater harvesting as would befit a super PhD thesis. However one very important reason is toreduce stress on our estuaries from less extraction from rivers during the rain seasonif everyone should harvest rainwater fromtheir roofs rather than using municipal water. It is also very important to provide themeans to become as independent as possible from the municipalities supply, at thesame time guarantying a supply in spite ofpossible and likely water outages in thenear future.

Q:WhatsortofroofshouldIusetomaximize my rainwater harvesting?

A: The most efficient .roof surface is ametal roof. This means a corrugated iron, flat iron sheet, or IBR profile. You cannotharvest rainwater with a thatched roof.Tiled roofs are not as efficient as metal forcollecting rainwater. Here are the averagecalculations

11 mm of rainfall for metal roofs produce 1000 litres of harvested rainwater for

every 100 sq. metres of roof area and16 mm of rainfall for tiled roofs produce

1000 litres of harvested rainwater for every100 sq. metres of roof area

Whatever your roof, we are able to determine precisely how much storage ofrainwater you should need..

Q: What size of water tanks do I needto store and use rainwater for my circumstances?

A: Our computer models determine thevolume of rainwater storage you requiredepending on the following factors:

How many people are there in thehouse? The more people using water theless rainwater storage you need and viceversa.

What is the size of roof area? The greater the area from which you can harvest thegreater storage capacity you can viably install.

What type of roof do you have? Themoreefficientthesurfacethemoreyoucanharvest.

Is your house a holiday house or do youlive in it all year round? Holiday homes willnaturally have greater benefit from greaterstorage.

Do you have our other systems to conserve water? You can halve you usage! Ourother systems of conserving water will enable you to reduce your use of water (drawdown) from 240 litres per person per dayto 120 litres per person per day withoutchanging your lifestyle.

These systems include the GardenRhapsody Grey Water System to reusegrey water for irrigation purposes, the Water Rhapsody MultiFlush to minimise thevolume of water required for flushing yourtoilet and the Water Rhapsody PoolsideTank to reuse swimming pool backwash

water. One other product to make rainwater go further is our unique product to reuse grey water for toilet flushing viz theWater Rhapsody Second Movement. Yourstored water will then go at least twice asfar.

Q: What water tanks sizes are availablefor the storage of rainwater?

A: The tank sizes for rainwater storagerange from, 1,500Litres, and include2,500Litres, and 5,000Litres. Though10,000L water tanks units are availablethis size is very unwieldy. We decide for youas to the best size.

Q: What do I get in order for me to harvest, store, and pump rainwater to myhouse?

A: Water Rhapsody Rain Runners arefixed to each and all of the downpipes, toinitially harvest the rainwater. This wateris fed into rainwater storage tanks, and wesupply a very reliable system to pump thiswater from the rainwater tanks to thewhole household.

Q: How much does the system cost?A: Water Rhapsody have a set of costs

to help you build a price for our rainwaterharvesting system, the sum total of whichis the Water Rhapsody Grand Opus. Theprice includes:

a. Water Rhapsody Rain Runnerb. Water Tanksc. Pump including overrideFor a detailed quote please contact a

Water Rhapsody dealer.Q: What about water outages: How can

I use the system of rainwater harvesting tosave me from being affected by water outages when the municipality turn off waterin search of ways to reduce demand?

A: We provide you with a ball valve inserted in a low position into one tank fromthemunicipalsourceofwater.Thiswillprovide you with one days use of water, enough to see you through a period of outage.

‘Atheists areintellectualcowards’

“IS it not obvious that we should dounto others as we would like to bedone unto us?”

With reference to the column written bySibusiso Biyela published on 20 February:since you referred to the Bible, I have a fewthings to say.

What you referred to here is fromChrist’s Golden Rule but the Bible containsand is so much more than that.

Some have accused Jesus of “borrowing” the idea of the golden rule from theEastern religions, which you seem to implyby saying you don’t think you need the Bible for that.

However, the texts for Confucianism,Hinduism, and Buddhism, cited below,

were all written between 500 and 400 BC,at the earliest.

Confucianism: "Do not do to otherswhat you do not want them to do to you"(Analects 15:23).

Hindusim: “This is the sum of duty: donot do to others what would cause pain ifdone to you” (Mahabharata 5:1517).

Buddhism: “Hurt not others in waysthat you yourself would find hurtful."(Udanavarga 5:18).

These sayings are similar to the goldenrule, but are stated ‘negatively’ and rely onpassivity.

Jesus’ golden rule is a ‘positive’ command to show love proactively. The Eastern religions say: “Refrain from doing”.

Jesus says, “do!” The Eastern religionssay it is enough to hold your negative behaviour in check; Jesus says to look forways to act positively.

Conclusion: I consider atheists to be intellectual cowards who choose simplicityover complexity and difficulty.

They too have a religion (whichthey deny) where they are the gods because they feel that they can doeverything themselves and prefer the theory of evolution (nonscientific), basicallysaying that morality was refined in animalsbefore animals evolved into men andwomen.

Not goodbehaviour

UnjustenrichmentAS head of State president Jacob Zumais thecustodianof thecountry’sresourc-es and the prudent use of it.

He sets the example for all to follow. The country's masses are living in de-plorable conditions 2O years into de-mocracy.

Important sectors like health, educa-tion and employment are in crisis.

There are billions of rands used inwasteful expenditure by governmentdepartmentswhichdonot filterdown tothe grass roots.

Fair enough, the president needs asafe and secure environment to live in.

There is no denying him that, but tosaythathedidnotauthorisetheexcessesand extravagance at Nkandla does nothold water for me.

Myreasonisthatitisbesidesthepointas he surely would have seen and evendiscussed what upgrades are going totake place at his homestead.

If he were a prudent president hewould immediately put a halt to it andaskquestionsastowhytheupgradesaregoingbeyond thesecurityupgrades thatwere intended.

He cannot rely on the argument thathe did not ask for it. So my point is thatifwecannotrelyonthepresidenttoover-see a simple over expenditure at hishomestead and put a stop to it, how canwe rely on our president to be the custo-dian of the country's resources?

Tome it was very poor judgement onthe part of the president to allow all theextravagantandcostlyupgradestoesca-late way beyond the necessary securityupgrades. In my humble opinion andwithnodisrespect, thepresident, if any-thing,must takemoralresponsibility forthis debacle.

EARLIER this monthmy six-year-old daughter was rushed to theKwaDukuza clinic at approxi-mately 8pm, suffering from a se-vere pain in the left side of her ab-domen.

To our disappointment whenwearrivedatthedoorweweretold

bythesecurityguardthatthenurs-es had just left for their breakwhich would take 30 to 45 min-utes.

Wewere asked to sit inside andwait for them. My husband thenwent to the break room and en-quired when the nurses were go-ing to resume duty as we werewaiting with a sick child for thepast hour.

Hewas then informedbyoneofthenursesthat theywereonatwo-

We had to leave the clinic with-outourchildbeingtreated.Iwouldlike to know, why is the clinicopened 24/7 if patients cannot re-ceive medical help at night? Thetax payers’money is being used tokeep it open, but these nurses are

Unethical behaviour of nurses

I WENT to StangerManor Secondary tofetchmycousinfromschoolrecentlyandas I waited for him I was disgusted withwhat I had witnessed.

A young girl, who looks like she is ingrade 10 or 11, was openly kissing herboyfriendwhoissurelyolderthansheis. This was definitely no innocent kiss.

I was shocked to see such behaviour.I felt so terrible and would like to knowwhat exactly are our kids doing? Don’tthey have shame as therewere somanyparents and elderly people around?

They pretended as if theywere aloneinaroom.EverydayIencouragemychil-dren to focus on their lives, build them-selves and after they’re independent, then they canhaveall the funandparty-ing they want.

We all want to live good lives andcome out of poverty. I would really likefor this issue to be addressed.

Concerned educator

WHILE watching the State of Nationaddress I was appalled by the acts thathad unfolded on national TV.

The question that came to my mindwas: “How were they elected to represent the people of our country?”

Parliament was set in place to represent the people of South Africa, to ex

press the views of the people in the National Assembly.

The aura that surrounds parliamentand its dignitaries is one of respect anddignity. However, the manner in whichthese dignitaries presented themselves at the SONA was disorderly, disrespectful and blatantly pathetic.

How do we expect our governmentto function at its best if it is being represented by unruly men and women?

As much as freedom of expressionis a sacred and well protected right inour country and the parties are entitledto speak their views, there is protocoland procedures that are to be obeyed.

The members of parliamentshowed no respect to the Speaker ofthe House. I believe that it is importantfor the members of parliament to bepeople who set a proper example forthe youth of our country and to be rolemodels to the youth who want to enterthe political environment.

The manner in which they are behaving now is not setting that example.

Fight disease with fermented foods>> This technique hasbeen used forthousands of years

FERMENTING foods is by nomeansanewprocessandthereis evidence that our ancestors

made bread, beer and wine at least8 000 years ago.

Imagine lifewithout yoghurt, vine-gar, cheese, wine or beer (or amasi inSouth Africa). These andmanymorefoods and beverages would not bepart of our lives without the processof fermentation.

Fermentationisessentiallyaproc-ess where organic substances arebroken down into simpler substan-ces, like for example the breakdownofsugar intoalcohol. It isbasically thebeginning of the process of putrefac-tion, but instead of letting the sub-stance decay completely, the processis controlled and halted at just theright time.

Think ofwine; if the fermentationprocessisnotstoppedintime, theendproduct could be vinegar, or worse.

Fermenting foods is by nomeansa new process and there is evidencethat our ancestors made bread, beerand wine at least 8 000 years ago. Italso very widespread and most cul-tures on earthhave enjoyed ferment-ed foods likesauerkraut insomeform

or another for millennia.MetchnikoffandBulgarianyoghurt

The fact that so many of us enjoy ourdaily tub of yoghurt is largely thanksto the Russian scientist Ilya Metchni-koff (1845 – 1915).

Metchnikoff observed that certaincommunitiesinBulgariaandtheRus-sianSteppeswhoconsumedmilk fer-mented by lactic-acid bacteria wereunusually long lived. He proposedthatconsumingfermentedmilkprod-ucts“seeds”theintestineswithlactic-acid bacteria, decreasing the intesti-nalpHandsuppressing thegrowthof

harmful bacteria.Metchnikoff’s theory was that

ageing is caused by putrefactive mi-crobes that produce toxic substancesin the intestine. These compoundsareresponsibleforwhathecalled“in-testinal auto-intoxication”, whichcause the physical changes associat-ed with old age.

Scientists maintain that B. lactisbulgaricus (hence the name Bulgari-anyoghurt)changestheintestinalflo-ra,whichlimitsauto-intoxicationandthe subsequent development of de-generative diseases.

Lactobacillus Bulgaricus is widelyused to sour milk (producing yogurt)andoftengivenasadigestiveremedy. It can also be taken in tablet form, al-though eating yoghurt is more effec-tive.

Amasi in Zulu and “maas” in Afri-kaans, is a fermented milk productthat tastes a lot like yoghurt. It is con-sumedwidely in South Africa. Tradi-tionallyitismadefromunpasteurisedmilk which is left in a calabash untilit ferments.

Nowadaysit ismadewithacultureand sold in supermarkets.

Amasi contains a large amount oflactic acid bacteriawhich is a very ef-fective probiotic andmay even kill E.coli bacteria.

Ourforefathersdidn’thavefridges, deep freezes, supermarkets ofcanned foods, so theyhad to findoth-er ways to preserve their food. Themost effective way to prevent foodfrom spoilingwas through fermenta-tion.

Becauseofmoderndevelopments, fermentation is no longer the onlyway of preserving food, with the re-sult thatweareno longer reaping thehealth benefits of eating fermentedfoodstothesameextentasourforefa-thers.

In 2003, however, AmericanSan-dorKatz published abook “Wild Fer-mentation”, which Newsweek called“the fermentingbible”. In thebookhe

shares his experiencewith home fer-mentation and calls himself a “fer-mentation revivalist”.

Since then,Katzhas “taughthun-dredsofworkshopsdemystifying fer-mentation,empoweringpeople tore-claim this important transformation-al process in their kitchens”.

His latest book is called “The Artof Fermentation” and is a New YorkTimes bestseller.

Fermented foods destroy and in-hibit the growth of pathogenic bacte-ria. Many pathogenic forms of bacte-ria are sensitive to acidic environ-ments, and the lactic acid infermented foods is capable of killingmany of these “bugs”.

Fermented foods help protect thestomach. Fermented foods ease di-gestive discomfort by increasingstomach acidity when necessary andprotect the lining of the stomach andintestines if there is too much acid.

Fermented foods encourage theproduction acetylcholine. Acetylcho-line is a neurotransmitter that helpsto increase themovementof thebow-el, alleviating constipationproblems. It also encourages the release of di-gestive juices and enzymes.

Fermented foods are good for dia-betics. Besides improving pancreaticfunction, the carbohydrates in fer-mented foodshavealreadybeenbro-ken down and, unlike normal carbs, place much less of a burden on thepancreas. - Health24

DIABETIC retinopathy is a complication of Diabetes Mellitus. The high sugar content damages blood vessels inthe retina(back of eye).

This results in leakage from thedamaged blood vessel into the finepoint of vision(centre of retina).Abnormal blood vessels grow on the retinawhich can bleed and scar.

Therefore it is imperative that everydiabetic is examined by an ophthalmologist(a medical doctor who hasspecialized in diseases of the eye). It’scovered by all medical aids as a PMB

condition.Depending on the level of damage

the following modalities may be carried out:

*Observation with close followup;*Laser treatments to stabilize or

prevent progression of Diabetic retinopathy;

*Injection of antiVEGF drugs tostop leakage into the fine point of vision.

All of the above are now availableat Tongaat Eye Centre. See advert formore details

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Municipality uses a Town Planning Scheme to regulate land use of propertiesand as part of the new order of legislation (e.g. Spatial Planning and Land UseManagement Act, 2013 (Act No. 16 of 2013) and Planning and Development Act,2000 (Act No. 6 of 2008)); this was improved and is now known as a Land UseManagement System.

The Municipality has been engaging in a process of rationalising its land usemanagement system by reviewing its town planning schemes and consolidatingsame into one document for the whole of the municipality in order to align to thisnew order legislation. The process also includes extending the scheme into areasthat are not under the provisions of a town planning scheme. The draft Townplanning scheme referred to as Land Use Management Document together witha Scheme map has been finalised and is ready for public input.

In the above regard, a document outlining the process that has been followedand tasks that have been undertaken can be sourced in the Municipal Websitefor information. However, formal meetings in the form of public meetings andfocused stakeholder group meetings will be held during the month of January andFebruary 2015 wherein all the relevant role-players will be given an opportunityto provide their input - formal communication in relation to this will be issuedin January 2015. This notice serves to sensitise the community of KwaDukuzaabout the pending public consultation process as well as to provide summaryinformation on the LAND USE MANAGEMENT PROCESS.

2.0 BACKGROUND

Land and development in Kwadukuza had been managed via nine Town PlanningSchemes (TPS) and the General Plan of Groutville.

The nine Town Planning Schemes are:-• Umhlali• Zimbali• Stanger (Kwadukuza)• Shaka’s Kraal• Prince’s Grant• Nkwazi• Ballito• Blythedale Beach• Tinley Manor

The nine Town Planning Schemes, with the exception of Zimbali, are fairly similarto each other in that they follow the format of the original Provincial model TownPlanning Scheme system. Over time, each of the Schemes have evolved, andseveral variations emerged. It is also important to note that the existing TownPlanning Schemes (TPS) only covered the built up areas of the previous munici-palities before amalgamation. Consequently it is also clear that the majority of themunicipal area was not covered by a Town Planning Scheme. In addition a smallportion of the municipality, located in the north-west border with Ndwedwe iscommunally owned and administered by a Traditional Council. Aside from somethree types of State Owned Facilities e. g. education, health and social welfaresites, there are no cadastral parcels in this area.

It is a requirement that Kwadukuza Municipality prepare a single consolidatedTown Planning Scheme for the entire municipal area i.e. a “wall-to-wall” Scheme.

3.0 PREPARING A CONSOLIDATED LAND USE MANAGEMENTSYSTEM (LUMS) SCHEME

The approach taken to construct a single / consolidated Scheme across the entireMunicipal area comprises:• “Consolidating” the 9 existing TPSs into a single Scheme;• Taking into account recent developments such as approved DFAs• Planning for the future by extending and adding new zoned areas• Extending the Scheme for the balance of Municipality

In order to distinguish the new zones from the existing zones, a new system ofnames has been introduced, so that Special residential Zones are to be calledResidential Only Detached (RODE) zones; multi-unit developments such as

Group Housing and Intermediate Residential zones are to be called ResidentialOnly Medium Density (ROMD) zones; and General Residential zones are to becalled Residential Only High density (ROHD) zones.

The “Consolidation” process required reducing numerous similar zones to fewerzones. For example, some 20 different Special Residential zones were reduceddown to 7 variations of what is to be called Residential Only Detached (RODE)zones. In all caseswhere the zone details differ slightly from the existing zones, thedevelopment rights will not be reduced as all lots will retain “Existing Use Rights”in respect of existing development, as only new development will be subject tothe new zoning. In any case the “Consolidation” process involved increasing the“rights” of the larger or higher intensity zoning, rather than reducing rights.

4.0 ADVERTISING, PARTICIPATION, COMMENT AND AMMEND-MENTS

It is a legal requirement that all Land Use Schemes include a consultation processin terms of which members of the public, key stakeholder groups, commercialand business interests are given an opportunity to comment of the Scheme priorto its adoption. The process includes:• Advertising the intention to adopt the new Scheme and giving rate payers an

opportunity to view the document;• Holding a series of public meetings to explain the nature of the new Scheme;• Giving people an opportunity to make comment, object and/or raise concerns

about the Scheme - this process will give people a period of 28 days to submittheir comments from the date of a formal notice being issued;

• The Draft Scheme will be amended;• Thereupon the Municipal Council will make a decision to adopt the Scheme;

and,• The Scheme is only formally adopted once it has been approved by the

Provincial authorities.

The “sugarcane” lads were in sixes andsevens in the final set with Kevin Moodaly,Ismail and Brandon “Poppy” Naidoo thechief culprits of unforced errors which ledto the demise (1511) of the Darnall outfit.

The runnersup spot in Pool A is an intriguing battle with anyone of Cool Leaders, Friendz or Darnall in the hunt for honours. Should Friendz beat Cool Leaders andGrove End beat Darnall, they (Friendz) willsecure a semifinal berth, but should DarnallupsetGroveEnd,they(Darnall)willsecure the runnersup spot.

The bill was first proposed in 2011 by then minister of transport,S’bu Ndebele who had been in meetings with the Automobile Association for two years before it was proposed to parliament.

AA spokesperson Marius Luyt said alcohol played a major rolein SA road deaths. He said a zero alcohol level would not be toodrastic as current levels are currently very low, reports Beeld.

Old wounds were reopened, failure withbatandballwereexposed inanembarrassingflurry of wickets under which the Proteasfound themselves buried at the MCG.

The Proteas have won 24 of their last 36ODIs and have never lost to India in any of thepreviousWorld Cupmeetings, thus went intoSunday’s clash as overwhelming favourites.

Many critics will argue that the loss is notcatastrophic-theywill still reach theknockoutstages of the tournament.

But, defeat against West Indies on Friday,27 February or against Pakistan on 7 Marchcould result in South Africa finishing third inPool B and a tricky quarter-final clash againsteither New Zealand or Australia (pending theoutcome of their fixtures) who are stronglyfancied to occupy the top two positions.

Die-hard Proteas supporter, NR Singh(president of Manor Cricket Club) said: “TheProteashadabaddayat the officewith apoorall round showing. Take nothing away from abrilliant Indian performance, the Proteaschasingwhatwould have been a record scoreto win at the MCG.

27 February2015Stanger WEEKLY

It’s an honour to servethis great community

VALENE GOVENDER - EDITOR

MY first impression of the StangerWeekly was wow! that's a big apaper with tons of inserts falling

out as I picked it up.After reading it I distinguished that this

paper represents a closeknit and proudcommunity.

At that time I was the editor of a different community newspaper, although alsoin the Media 24 stable, and I had the opportunity of chatting to the former managingeditor of the Stanger Weekly, HaroonMohammedy, about developments withthis product.

I always enjoyed our chats as he hadbeen involved with the paper since its inception and his passion for his communityalways came through in our conversations.

He described the early days of workingwith the Weekly team sending the papertopressthe“oldfashioned”way, thehoursspentputtingthepublicationtogetherandthe many laughs shared with clients andreaders. To me, a Durbanite, Stanger, nowknown as KwaDukuza, seemed like a littlegem hidden away on the North Coast.

I started reading the paper weekly andI patiently waited for the day when I couldmake a shopping trip to Stanger becausethere were tons of bargains which I couldnot wait to get my hands on.

After Haroon decided to pursue otherventuresIwasaskedtoassistwith“puttingthe publication together”.

Honestly, I was terrified! Not only didI have big shoes to fill, the Stanger Weekly

is one of the more popular titles in the KZNLocal Newspapers stable.

My first assignment was to visit thisproud community.

I found outjust how muchthis paper isloved in thecommunitywhen I finallymade my firsttrip to theStanger office.

As I enteredthe driveway of148 King ShakaRoad, I froze.

I saw tons of people congregated outside and my initial thought (call it humannature) was: "Oh my gosh, something iswrong. Maybe someone's had a heartattack."

I sat there watching before reactingand realised that there was a lot of movement and naturally nobody had “trauma”written all over their face.

So I parkedand slowly approached theentrance, well Itried to approach the entrance, becausea crowd of people made it almost impossible.

After finallyrealising what

was happening, I pulled out my phone andtook a few photos because nobody wouldbelieve me when I relayed this story to theteam in Durban.

There were hundreds of people queue

ingoutsidetheStangerWeeklyofficewaiting to get their hands on a copy.

Most of them started reading it as theymade their way out of the office.

I was so impressed and felt proud tohave played a small, at that time a verysmallpart, inputtingthisproducttogether.

Towards the latter part of 2014 I got theopportunity to work more closely with theamazing team at the Stanger Weekly.

I’ve seen the valued relationshipsformed with our dedicated journalists andour passionate readers and our readersare passionate!

The KwaDukuza community is not shyto fight against corruption and will call ifthey feel any action by community leaders, residents and even the Weekly, is unjust.

We appreciate every call, every SMSand comment made on Facebook becausethe most important aspect of our tasks atthe Stanger Weekly is meeting the needsof our readers.

I now look forward to my visits to theWeekly office when I get to spend timewith my awesome team and meet wonderful people, and when I can squeeze inshopping time, I enjoy strolling down KingShaka Street and bargain hunting.

Thank you remarkable clients andreaders for contributing to the success ofthe Stanger Weekly.

Here’s to 25 years and more ...

25th AnniversaryStanger

My first step to GREATNESS

BY SEMTHAMERA DHAVER,FORMER STANGER WEEKLYJOURNALIST, CURRENTLY A FOR-EIGN ENGLISH TEACHER FOR THEASAN BOARD OF EDUCATION INSOUTH KOREA

I STARTED my career at the StangerWeekly shortly after graduating fromRhodes University with a Bachelor of

Journalism degree in 1999.I was fortunate to join an established

and reputable newspaper where I got myfirst insight into the processes and thebusiness of running and producing a week

ly newspaper. It was my first dose of realityregarding the journalism profession andmy time at the Weekly not only helped mehone myskillasawriterandsubeditor, buttaught me more than I had ever expectedto learn or that I had learned at university.

When I was growing up in Stanger andI had decided to study journalism, I always

imagined that I would one day be able towork for a newspaper like the StangerWeekly. So, joining the editorial team wasliterally a dream come true.

My first job at the Stanger Weekly wasjunior subeditor and over the years Iworked my way up the ranks from juniorto senior reporter.

I still remember the excitement I feltat seeing my first byline on the front page.It was one of my greatest accomplishments as a young reporter.

I was privileged to work under the leadership of seasoned editor from whom Ilearned invaluable skills and receivedmuch support. I enjoyed working with a resourceful editorial team including a number of experienced and accomplished reporters such as Tahera Mather, ThokozaniGumede and Mervyn Krishna. In addition,I was greatly inspired and received muchsupport and encouragement from our copyeditor and manager, Haroon Mohammedywho taught me the value of always aimingfor a level of professional excellence byleading by example.

Another of the many opportunities Ihad while I worked at the Weekly, was toassist and mentor junior reporters whojoined our team when I was serving as asenior reporter and subeditor. It was veryuplifting to pay it forward and help otherswho were in the same position as I was

when I first started my career. It was also a pleasure working with the

various social, religious, sporting and educational organisations in Stanger and surrounding areas. I am very grateful to haveshared a positive and cooperative working relationship with the community Iserved. I am also especially thankful to Inspector Michael Harris who served as SAPSmedia liaison during my time at the Weekly. His unwavering commitment to his profession was very apparent and he alwayswent the extra mile to help our reporters.

I left the Stanger Weekly in May 2004and I have had different jobs in differentcountries since then. However, I alwaysfondly remember my first job at the Stanger Weekly where I forged lifelong friendships, learned skills that still serve me tothis day and always experienced the senseof accomplishment each time we published each new edition of our newspaper, knowing all the hard work, and more especially the team work I had played a part in,had gone into making this possible.

I wish to extend my congratulations tothe Stanger Weekly on this milestone of its25th anniversary. I am truly honoured tohave been part of this great establishmentwhich continues to grow and prosper andmaintain its commitment to being thevoice and mirror of the community it hasserved so well for 25 years.
