STANTON COURT
DIRECTIONSTake the A40 from Oxford to Burford and then onto the A424 to Stow-on-the-Wold. Once
you reach Stow-on-the-Wold, bear left onto the B4077 towards Tewkesbury. Once you reach
Stanway, turn right, signposted to Stanton. The property is in the centre of the village.
Two
SITUATIONStanton is an idyllic village in the north
Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty, traditionally built in the glorious
golden honey hues of Cotswold stone. It
is a small unspoilt village with a pub and
a church, it is regarded as architecturally
important: Pevsner calls it ‘architecturally,
the most distinguished of the smaller villages
in the North Cotswolds’. Located on the
Gloucestershire/Worcestershire borders, it is
enviably close to many well known villages yet
is itself bypassed lending it a rare tranquility.
Stanton Court occupies a prime position
within the village. The front of the house
faces west enjoying breathtaking views over
Malverns and The Black Mountains. Endless
STANTON COURT Three
views of the countryside surround the house
and gardens.
Local shops and services are 4 miles away
in nearby Broadway, with Cheltenham only
12 miles away providing more extensive
shopping and facilities. The area is
conveniently located for many of the best
schools in the country in Cheltenham, Malvern
and Oxford.
The general area also offers excellent country
and sporting pursuits. There is racing at
Cheltenham, Stratford-upon Avon and
Warwick, hunting with The North Cotswold
Hunt and within the village are the renowned
Stanton stables with some of the most
beautiful gallops in the country.
HISTORY Stanton Court is believed to date from the
reign of James I. Built for the Izod family
in the early part of 17th Century it passed
to their relatives, the Wynniatts in the early
18th Century. They extended the house in
1774 including the right wing addition with its
impressive Georgian double drawing room.
However, it is Sir Philip Sidney Stott, 1st
Baronet, an English architect, civil engineer
and surveyor, who is credited with rescuing
Stanton village from oblivion in 1906: he put
his fortune and skills into restoring Stanton
Court and other historic buildings in the
village.

Ground Floor
The light stone walls, floor and mullion windows of the Entrance Hall give way to the Grand Hall, directly ahead, with large carved stone fireplace, exposed ceiling beams and oak panelling. Concealed doors lead through to the Georgian double Drawing Room with window seats, carved wood painted fireplace with marble slips, fine white-painted wood walls, moulded plaster ceiling and cornice incorporating a Stuart design of lion heads and roses. This room allows superb views to the West, South and East.
A concealed door from the Grand Hall leads to the Dining Room, recently panelled in light oak with exposed ceiling beams and large carved stone fireplace. A door leads from this room into the contrasting modernity and light of the Garden Room with four sets of bespoke bronze french windows facing the terrace and bespoke mirrored panels set in artisan plaster work.
DeSCriptionStanton Court is a listed Grade II Jacobean Manor House in the Elizabethan style, with projecting gables and angle towers. The house and surrounding walls are constructed from ashlar Cotswold Stone with a stone slate roof. The original U-shape house has been extended over the centuries to include a Georgian double drawing room, cottages and link bridge creating the courtyard, and more recently a stunning garden room and pool suite.
The house is approached from the south entrance, which is the main entrance to the property. The north entrance accesses the courtyard and cottages. Wrought Iron gates mounted on warm cotswold stone pillars bearing spherical finials open to reveal a light gravelled drive where impressive topiary and hedgerows cleverly conceal two areas for parking.
Stanton Court is a very impressive manor house, comprehensively renovated and finished to an impeccably high standard with the input of renowned Cotswold architects. The current owners, custodians of the house for over thirty years, have sensitively redesigned the house and gardens to create a home which is extensive, yet warm and welcoming. Within the last four years, the roof has received a major overhaul, is now fully insulated, chimney stacks rebuilt and all downpipes have been concealed internally. The property has also be wholly re-plumbed and rewired, including remote control of the systems.

The Garden Room is linked by double doors to the Main Kitchen, a wonderfully light room with hand painted Italian tiles above an Electric AIMS Aga with integrated gas hob and side oven. The latest kitchen appliances can be found within the, central island with granite worktops, refridgerated drawers and integral dishwasher. To the side of the main kitchen is the Service Kitchen, almost a mirror of the main, with central island, catering-standard steam ovens and hot-plates. A hallway from here leads to a walk in fridge, store-room, staff cloakroom and Staff Quarters over 2 levels: comprising Housekeepers Office, Staffroom, Spare-Room, Laundry and direct outside access.
A Guest Cloakroom, Study and Butlers Pantry with its original Silver Safe are accessed via a hallway off the main entrance hall. A door leads from this floor down to the Cellars comprising a brick Wine Store and Beer Store.
The house flows through the Garden Room into the expansive yet inviting Family Room with vaulted ceiling and library housed under the raised gallery. A master craftsman from the South of France created the unique carved stone fireplace, featuring a Fleur de Lys and Tudor Rose. 2 large specially-commissioned solid oak doors from France, with bespoke iron door furniture, conceal the entertainment centre and hallway.

From the Family Room, a hallway of hand polished Italian tiles leads to the Boot Hall with dog shower, a second staircase and the Garages with their 3 sliding doors.
Approximately 2 years ago an extension for the Indoor Swimming Pool Suite was built. Sensitively designed to sit behind the garages, sliding doors in a wall of glass open out on to a wood decked terrace sunk below the garden level with a modern water feature designed by David Harber within the garden wall. The extension and terrace are hidden from view of the house and garden, yet it feels incredibly open and light, aided by the light stone walls, floor and pool basin with traditional pargeting plasterwork depicting a tree design. A Sauna/Steam Room and shower, and built in sound system complete this beautiful suite.

GarDen anD GrounDSThe stunning gardens have been designed to create grand displays in the Spring and Autumn and have benefitted from the experience and input of Chelsea gold medallist garden designer Rupert Golby. Naturally fed lakes are diverted around the garden to form a series of streams, rivulets and a rill, with rockery, flower beds and a miniature arboretum. A rose garden planted two years ago features twisted iron trellis to blend with rose branches. A large yew hedge forms a natural outdoor store, next to a door leading to the churchyard. The rill leads through a spectacular Potager into an end pond enhanced by 4 medlar trees. The Potager with its stone Summer House is not only beautiful but productive providing endless cut flowers, fruit and vegetables. A gate from The Potager leads to the Orchard with cherry, pear, apple, quince and plum trees. Further to this is a small Arboretum featuring a large pond planted with numerous specimen trees and potential paddock. Much of the gardens have lighting and a controlled irrigation system.
Stanton Court Nineteen
A Terrace next to the dining room is built from Old York Stone and includes a fountain feature. The second oak decked Terrace is sunk below garden level and accessed from The Pool Suite.
Stanton Court Twenty
From the garden is a view towards Shenberrow Hill and village church. The private 50 acre woodland on Shenberrow Hill is mixed deciduous woodland including Ash and Birch. A public footpath skirts the edge of the wood, however, there are no rights of way through the wood. The current owners grant stalking rights on an annual basis to a local stalker. There is a right of way up a track for vehicular access to the woodland.
The Cricket Field and Pavillion, in front of the house, comprises 2 Changing Rooms with Showers, Kitchen and Club Area. Next to the Pavillion is a Shed/Store. The Cricket Field and Pavillion are used by local clubs by permission of the owners granted annually.
