(A) WHAT PARAMETERS ARE TESTED ?
1. Weld Load
« The load at which the lubricant film ruptures, metal to metal contact takes place, friction & temperature go up & the balls weld together.
« This confirms the EP or load carrying limit of the lubricant as well as its “ anti – scuff ” properties (prevention of pitting /metallic wear).
2. Wear Scar
« Wear seen on the three stationery balls subjected to rotational rubbing, with the fourth ball - 1 hour at fixed load, speed & temperature.
« Depths of the wear scars at the point of contact are measured & an average value confirmed.
« Lower the wear scar, better the anti-wear properties of the lubricant.
3. Coefficient of friction
« Ratio of the force of friction between the balls & the force pressing them together.
« Lower values (both initial, ie. “run-in” & average) confirm smoother surfaces & lower
friction levels.
« This results in lower operating temperatures, lesser wear, longer re-lubrication intervals & overall
superiority of the lubrication.
(B) RELEVANCE OF COMPARATIVE “FOUR BALL” TRIBOLOGICAL TESTING:
« Load, friction & wear – all three key factors of effective lubrication are scientifically assessed.
« Therefore relative superiority & reliability of the lubricant (both greases as well as lube oils) can be scientifically confirmed. A superior lubricant can thereby be selected /developed. Lubrication thus is improved & wear is controlled without any risk to the customers equipment.
