Rev. John Muse is a
minister member of
the Presbytery of
Charlotte. He was
educated at Union
Theological Seminary
in Richmond,
Virginia, was
ordained in 1993
and has been
serving Presbyterian Churches in the
Carolinas since ordination.
Rev. Muse served the church as an
installed pastor for 10 years and for
the past 15, as an intentional interim
minister. Starmount will be the 8th
congregation Rev. Muse has served
as a transitional pastor. John is no
stranger to the Presbytery of Salem. From
2011-1013, he served the Jamestown
Presbyterian Church prior to the arrival of
Pastor Jay Smith.
John and Beth Muse have two grown
children. Evan (22) is employed by the
City of Rock Hill, South Carolina and
daughter Kate (19) is a rising
sophomore at the University of South
Carolina, Lancaster. John’s wife, Beth,
is also an ordained Presbyterian
minister. She serves the Ruby
Presbyterian Church on Sundays in
Ruby, South Carolina, which is outside
of Chesterfield.
During this bridge interim period, John
will reside locally in the parsonage of
the Jamestown church and will be
available to the congregation in times
of need.
Rev. Muse will work full time, lead staff
and worship and will provide
transitional leadership and pastoral
services to Starmount. He is happy to
be here and looks forward to bridging
the gap between pastors.

PASTOR ’S Worship Note: Why Intinction?
Once a month, we carve out time in worship
to celebrate the Lord’s Supper, more
commonly called “communion”. The Book of
Order reminds us that “at the Lord’s Table, the
Church is renewed and empowered by the
memory of Christ’s life, death, resurrection,
and promise to return. In remembering,
believers receive and trust the love of Christ
present to them and to the world; they
manifest the reality of the covenant of grace
in reconciling and being reconciled; and they
proclaim the power of Christ’s reign for the
renewal of the world in justice and in peace.”
The two ways we receive communion are
through Intinction and through the passing of
the trays through the pews. Over the last
twelve months, Intinction has become more
commonplace during Starmount’s celebration
of the Lord’s Supper – but why?
Both ways to serve communion can provide a
rich experience for everyone involved.
However, there are some who believe that
serving communion by Intinction can provide
a more intimate, personal experience for all
involved. To have to come forward to receive
communion can help us to reflect on the
journey that Jesus took, as well as the faith
journey we take as well. To have an individual
connection to the teaching and ruling elders
called by the church to lead provides a
personal connection as the elements are
distributed. The journey, the presentation of
the bread and cup, and the return to the pew
for reflection and prayer can lead to a faith-
rich, powerful experience.
Communion this month will be served on
Sunday, June 11, which is Confirmation
Sunday. One of the first acts of service the
confirmands perform as active members of
the congregation is to serve communion to
other church members. So as you come
forward for Intinction this month, the
confirmands with be serving with their mentors;
take a piece of bread large enough to dip
into the cup and, as you return, you are
encouraged to reflect on the ways your faith
has sustained you throughout your life.
THANK YOU!
My words cannot begin to
express the gratitude in
my heart for the kind
words, cards,
congratulations, and well
wishes over the last six
weeks. I am also blown away by the generosity
of all of you with my graduation gift – I was
joking with someone after worship one day that
I am a little bummed to have “casual summers”
without robes because I won’t be able to wear
it! However, I know it will be there in the fall
when the weather cools down a bit. In the
meantime, I get to look at it with fondness
about my achievement and the love, prayers,
and support I have felt from each one of you
from the first day to now.
I am looking forward to all of the wonderful
activities, work, and planning that will be going
on this summer – Cindy Lee and I will be
working with the Faith Formation Committee on
a long-range plan for milestones in Children’s
Ministry. Multiple committees are working
together to host the first of hopefully many
Sundae Hymn Sings. Tutoring on Wednesday
afternoons will keep the hallways buzzing, as
will the Preschool’s Summer Stars program. We
will also look forward to Vacation Bible School
and other wonderful activities that the
Fellowship Committee has planned.
I am also looking forward to welcoming Rev.
John Muse to our church family. Visitors,
returning guests, and new members continue
to comment that Starmount is such a warm and
welcoming congregation. I look forward to
seeing how that welcoming and hospitality
extend to a new staff member as well!
Blessings,
Pastor Kathryn

Youth Fund and Hood Grant
Application Deadline
EXTENDED
The Faith Formation Committee has
two exciting opportunities to help
college and graduate students in
the Starmount community. Please
note that the deadline has been extended to
Sunday, June 18, at midnight. Applications can
be submitted to Pastor Kathryn by email and
will be discussed at the next Faith Formation
Committee meeting, with a decision being
presented to applicants before the start of the
fall semester.
The Youth Fund Grant is available to both
high school graduates and postgraduate
students – students may apply once for
college and once for their postgraduate
education. The Youth Fund Grant provides
$400 for those high school students entering
college or $300 for those entering graduate
school and is paid directly to the student with
the intention of using it toward tuition, books,
or other school-related fees.
To apply for this Youth Fund grant, a 500-word
essay should be submitted outlining their plans
for the fall, as well as their service-related
involvement, church involvement, academic
achievements, and how their faith has helped
to shape them into who they are today and
how they see it sustaining them in the year to
come.
The Bob and Irene Hood Scholarship, is a
new grant provided by the generosity of an
endowment gift from Bob and Jackie Hood.
The application process is as follows: a letter of
application should include their involvement
and/or service to the church, information
about the applicant’s future goals and how
this money would help in achieving those
goals. They should also provide information
regarding any other scholarships which they
applied for and/or anticipate. If there are any
special needs for this particular year, they
should also be addressed. The applicant’s GPA
should also be included. In addition, a one-
page statement of faith should be included
with the letter of application. A letter of
recommendation from a member of the
church (non-family) will be required. The
Committee recommends an elder or mentor.
The Faith Formation Committee looks forward
to hearing from all interested applicants.
Remember: the deadline to apply is Sunday,
June 18, at midnight. Please send your
applications to Pastor Kathryn at

Kickball Game!
Dan, Maria, Zack, and Neal
Johnson are opening up their
home to us again this year for a good ol’
fashioned Kickball game at the park, as well as
other fun family-friendly games on Saturday,
June 10, at 4:30 pm. Following the games from
5-6, we will cross the street to their house (and
backyard) for a cookout! The church will
provide the hot dogs, hamburgers, and kid-
friendly drinks. The request is that you bring a
lawn chair, side dish or dessert to share, and
any other beverages you may want to drink. To
let us know you’re coming (for enough food for
all!), please sign up by going online or
contacting Pastor Kathryn. This would be a
great event to bring another family to – let them
get to know us in a great, relaxed social setting!
Youth & Young Adults
6 Starmount Presbyterian Church
The primary purpose of the Caring Ministries Committee
is to provide support, encouragement and love through
visits, cards and calls to members of our church who are
homebound and facility bound. At times hospital visits
may be made.
Concerns regarding changes in health or care status are brought to the
attention of the church’s Parish Visitor, Rev. Dr. Ken Meeks, Jr. Some of these
concerns may be shared with the committee so that visits may be made or
cards sent. Confidentiality is always maintained.
At Easter, in the fall, and at Christmas flowering plants are taken to
homebound and facility bound members. Upon request communion may be
given at any time to those visited. Also upon request church bulletins are
mailed by Brenda Triplett to the homebound and facility bound. Committee
members are encouraged to deliver updated church directories and Advent
Devotional Booklets (at Christmastime) to those they visit.
In May of each year the committee is responsible for Sentimental Journey
which honors those church members age 80 and over. These members have
contributed (and still do) so much over the years to the church and it is an
honor to recognize them. A catered meal is served and entertainment
provided. Recently on May 21 the 13th annual Sentimental Journey was held
with close to 100 honorees, family members and church members attending.
The Caring Ministries Committee is also responsible for “Knit One, Pray Too”,
the church’s knitting ministry. Funding is provided by the committee. The
committee realizes that there are many care-givers in the church. No
committee can replace the loving care church members extend to one
another. It is the task of the Caring Ministries Committee to ensure that, to the
best of their ability, no one “falls through the cracks.”
Members of the committee are:
Rev. Dr. Ken Meeks, Staff Liaison; Lauren Shook, Session Liaison; Steve
Blackwood, Marcia Carmichael, Stan Dixon, Evelyn Garrison (Secretary), Paige Greeson, Claudel Lassiter, Susanne McIntire, Evelyn Nadler, Ann Parks,
Gwen Ratterree, Barbara Spencer, Lila Tunstall, May Williams (Chair), and Parks Williams

Starmount Community Garden
Come visit the garden! Our group of
gardeners is there every Saturday morning
and we can be found at other times, just
ask one of us to show you around. Our new
pollinator bed is full of flowering plants to
attract beneficial insects to our vegetable
plants. All 12 of the beds have now been
planted and we have harvested some of
the spring vegetables; onions and radishes
to date. The mountain of wood chips in the
parking lot is getting smaller as we refurbish
the paths. We'd love to have you come to
help or just to see what's growing.

Yoga in the News
Yoga has been in the news
this month. Both the AARP
and the Consumer Reports
magazines highlighted the
benefits of yoga for staying
active and avoiding back
pain.
AARP states that the last five years has seen
an 80% increase in yoga participation and
the magazine recommends Iyengar
(alignment based) yoga particularly for
those over 60. Our Starmount yoga classes
are exactly what AARP recommends. We
practice Iyengar based yoga focusing on
moving slowly into poses and emphasizing
correct alignment using props to safely hold
those poses. Check the April/May AARP
magazine for 21 health reasons to do yoga!
The June Consumer Reports approaches
the topic from the viewpoint of back-pain
sufferers. “In February the American College
of Physicians (ACP)…issued new guidelines
for back-pain treatment, saying that the first
line of defense should be nondrug
measures.” The article goes on to say that “It
found that more than 80% of those who tried
yoga or tai chi or had seen a massage
therapist or chiropractor said it had helped
them.”
There are many different causes for back
pain and some may require medical
intervention, but the majority of common,
occasional back pain occurs as “soft tissue”
pain stemming from overstretched or injured
muscles, tendons, or ligaments often resulting
from poor posture, prolonged sitting,
strenuous work, or repetitive action.
Practicing yoga improves posture,
strengthens muscles, releases physical
tightness and emotional stress, and enhances
your body’s ability to recover. Ideally, you
should practice yoga before you are injured
which makes it less likely that you will be
injured. If you come to yoga after an injury,
your yoga instructor can give you
modifications to allow you to move safely.
In yoga we INVITE movement; we never
FORCE an action. The very first of the yamas
is ahimsa which translates to non-violence.
Yoga philosophy embraces “do no harm” –
to yourself or others.
Yoga recognizes that balance of body,
mind and spirit is a goal that takes a lifetime
of practice. Come practice with your friends
in one of Starmount’s peaceful, non-
judgmental, and very supportive yoga
classes. A chair class for women is offered at
11:30 am on Tuesdays. More challenging
classes are offered on Fridays at 9:30 am
and Sundays at 5:30 pm with a new class on
Wednesdays at 7 pm for men, women, and
couples.

June starts summer vacations which
hopefully include some reading. Here are
some newly acquired titles briefly noted for
your reading pleasure:
A Gathering of Larks, Letters to Saint Francis
From A Modern Day Pilgrim by Abigail Carroll.
The author takes readers on a journey of
wonder, through these 40 ‘letters’ to Francis
that are poems, questions and excursion of
curiosity.” Call no. 271.3 Car 2017
Reading John for Dear Life by Jaime
Clark-Soles. “This is a unique commentary
of John’s Gospel by a scholar who calls
upon all the senses of the read. She does
exegesis alongside poetry and guided
meditations. This gospel is meant to touch
your life and Jaime Clark-Soles intends that
to happen, too.” Call no. 226.5 Cla 2016
The Gospel of Simon by John Smelcer. “This
novel retells the story of Jesus through the
experience of Simon of Cyrene who helped
him carry the cross. What comes forth is a
stirring message for turbulent times we are
living through right now.” Call no. F Sme 2016
Practicing Pilgrimage, On Being and
Becoming God’s Pilgrim People by Brett
Webb-Mitchell. “This book is everything you
could want to know about pilgrimage as a
Christian practice. The author is a teacher,
a pastor and a pilgrim who grounds the
practice theologically and then shows us
how to practice prayer as pilgrimage in our
own lives.” Call no. 261.Web 2016
Inside of a Dog, What Dogs See, Smell, and
Know by Alexandra Horowitz. “The Psalms
frequently invite us to experience the whole
of life as an occasion to praise God and
give thanks. This book invites us to do the
same through an exploration of a dog’s
life. The science of smell and sight
becomes an occasion not only to learn
about dogs, but to also learn a fresh way
for humans to experience life in all its
fullness.” Call no. 636.7 Hor 2009

2017 issue of the Presbyterian Outlook in
section “Spring Books: Briefly Noted”.
ONE CHURCH, ONE BOOK
We will be discussing: Mom &
Me & Mom by Maya
Angelou. “Angelou reveals
the triumphs and struggles of
being the daughter of Vivian
Baxter, an indomitable spirit
whose petite size belied her
larger-than-life presence—a
presence absent during much of Angelou’s
early life. When her marriage began to
crumble, Vivian famously sent three-year-
old Maya and her older brother away from
their California home to live with their
grandmother in Arkansas. The subsequent
feelings of abandonment stayed with
Angelou for years. Angelou dramatizes her
years reconciling with the mother she
preferred to simply call “Lady,” revealing
the profound moments that shifted the
balance of love and respect between
them. Delving into one of her life’s most
rich, rewarding, and fraught relationships,
Mom & Me & Mom explores the healing
and love that evolved between the two
women over the course of their lives, the
love that fostered Maya Angelou’s rise from
immeasurable depths to reach impossible
heights.” From publisher

This is a great opportunity for any church
group to work as a team. If your group
would like to work a specific date or task,
contact Pat Hall and she can sign you up
with Habitat. The schedule with dates and
tasks is posted on the Mission bulletin board.
If you want to work as an individual, you
can sign up on the Habitat web-site:
www.habitatgreensboro.org or sign up with
me. All volunteers (adults and youth) will
need to sign a Release and Waiver of
Liability. Pat Hall has copies of this form.
If you are interested in providing breakfast
on a Saturday before work starts at 7:30
am, the food will need to be there at 7:15
am. Nothing fancy: doughnuts, bagels, etc.
The age Limits are 14 – 16 Painting or
Landscaping; 16 – 18 tasks that don’t
require power tools, a ladder or being on
the roof. 18 and up they can work on any
task.
