A Stick Until . . .Written and Illustrated by Constance Anderson

A stick is just a stick until . . . an elephant turns it into a flyswatter, an alligator uses it to catch prey, or a child uses a stick as a toy.

Constance Anderson (Smelling Sunshine) shows readers how a simple stick can become a tool or a toy in this enjoyable look at the many uses animals and people can find for sticks. Creative uses of sticks range from chimpanzees catching tasty treats to birds attracting mates. A fun book to read to an inquisitive child or for use in a classroom, A Stick Until . . . shows the wonders of nature and the joy of imagination.

I Am Vincent van GoghBy Gabriel Martin Roig Illustrated by Fatima Garcia Translated by C. J. Quinn

I Am Vincent van Gogh introduces readers, ages ten and up, to one of the world’s most famous artists. Van Gogh’s life is as fascinating as his paintings. Although always interested in art, van Gogh did not start painting until his late twenties. Once he started, van Gogh created some of the world’s best-known paintings including “Sunflowers” and “The Starry Night.” Martin Roig brings van Gogh’s story to life as if van Gogh were speaking directly to the reader. Precise explanations of art movements and terms are provided for readers. Illustrations of van Gogh’s family and life are interspersed with vibrant reproductions of paintings. I Am Vincent van Gogh, the story and the art, will hold readers enthralled to the final page.

They say my painting. Wheat Field with Crows perfectly represents the altered mental state I was in days before my suicide. Some even thought it could also be seen as a premonition of my fatal outcome. Perhaps, for these reasons, many art scholars have considered it my artistic farewell, but for me it was just one more painting. Some books say that this was my last work, but it is not true. After that painting, I did a dozen more paintings. I do agree with the assessment that, due to its quality and strength, Wheatfield with Crows is one of my best works.

Some believe that my Wheatfield with Crows painting predicted how my life would end.

Although some do not know it, after

Books and BricksHow a School Rebuilt the Community

By Sindiwe Magona Illustrated by Cornelius Van Wright

Salmina Arenda’s school was a scary place. The fence had holes, the walls needed paint, and the yard was full of weeds and rubbish. But things started to look up when the school received new computers. Then disaster struck the school! Now parents, teachers, and students alike must rally together to revive their school and community.

Books and Bricks is based on a real event at a primary school in Cape Town, South Africa, shortly after the historic elections in 1994, that ended apartheid and elected the first black president, Nelson Mandela. Change, even change for the better, can be unsettling yet it provides an opportunity to work together to improve the world. Books and Bricks is a compelling and uplifting story about self-reliance and community building.

Hidden LettersAnnotated by Deborah Slier and Ian Shine Translated by Marion Pritchard

In 1997, when an old house was demolished in Amsterdam, 86 letters were found. Written by a teenager sent to a forced labor camp in Holland during World War II, the letters reveal the grueling hardships of those forced to labor in the Nazi work camps as well as the courage of the people who risked their lives helping them.

Hidden Letters is an extraordinary source of information and resources for readers and scholars of WW II and the Holocaust.

Curriculum ConnectionsSocial Studies: WW II, Holocaust, important historic events, relationships and interactions of cultures and civilizations during particular eras, narrative accounts of world history, analyzing historic events from

“This collection of letters displays a spirit as indomitable as that of Anne Frank’s . . . [it is] more than the story of one young man, but an addition to the history of the Holocaust in Holland that could be particularly effective as educational material.” —Publishers Weekly
