Overview

Star College Scheme has been initiated by DBT in 2008 to support colleges and universities offering

undergraduate education to improve science teaching across the country.

Our college has been selected for the prestigious DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME, Department of

Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India from 2016-17. Rs. 58 Lakhs

has been sanctioned for the same. The scheme is focusing on strengthening the undergraduate science

teaching in colleges selected under this scheme. Currently, our five departments are supported viz.

Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology and Information Technology. The scheme will help immensely in

improving the infrastructural facilities in these departments.

Various student-centric activities are being conducted regularly for overall development of the students

which includes DBT-STAR Lecture Series, Hands-on-Trainings, Workshops, Industrial and Academic

Visits, Research Projects and Competitions as well as Faculty trainings.

The schedules and details of activities are displayed time-to-time on the college web-portal as well as on

the Notice Boards. Our organization is registered on PFMS site since September 2016 under the

scheme" Biotechnology Research and Development-0150” and fund transfers are being made from

DBT to our organization through PFMS from the academic year 2016-2017 onwards.

The hierarchy is followed in our institution

Objectives:

To strengthen the academic and physical infrastructure for achieving excellence in teaching and

training

To enhance the quality of the learning and teaching process to stimulate original thinking through

‘hands–on’ exposure to experimental work and participation in summer schools

To promote networking and strengthen ties with neighboring institutions and other laboratories

To conduct specialized training programmes for faculty improvement for optimizing technical

capabilities

To increase capabilities of core instrumentation resources by procuring new equipment and

upgrading existing facilities

To provide access and exposure to students to research laboratories and industries in the country

To help in devising standard curricula and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) / kits for

practicals

To provide better library facility to students and teachers

Minutes & Report of First Advisory Committee Meeting held on 11th March 2017

at KME Society’s G. M. Momin Women’s College, Bhiwandi (Dist Thane), Maharashtra

Adviser to the Department of Biotechnology, Hon’ble Dr. Suman Govil visited G.M.Momin Women’sCollege on 11th March 2017 for Star Advisory Committee meeting along with external experts Dr. SunilKumar Deshmukh, Scientist, TERI, New Delhi and Mr. Avinash Lewis Senior Engineer, United Nations.External Expert Dr. Rajendra Shinde, Vice Principal, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai was granted leave ofabsence. Dr. Mussaddiq Patel, Gen Secretary, KME Society and member of the managementMr. ShafiMuqri graced the occasion.

Principal Dr. Moses Kolet gave his presentation where he briefly introduced the college, its aims,objectives, vision and mission, its management and local education scenario and relatedchallenges in the small culturally isolated town of Bhiwandi, especially from point of view ofeducation of girls; as our college is a women’s college.

The Committee interacted with the students in the college auditorium whereinstudentsofdepartments selected for star college scheme voiced theirpositive feelings and gave feedback onbenefits derived from various activities conducted under the Star college scheme.Dr. VaishaliNirmalkar conducted this part of the programme. Following were the students who gave thefeedback of various activities sponsored by DBT under Star College Scheme.

Research Convention

Dr. Suman Govil shared her experiences with students and motivated them to take up challengesin life. Students loved and appreciated her heartfelt interaction with them. Students looked uponDr. Suman Govil as their ideal role model.

Departmental presentations, along with the presentation of star coordinator were organized in theIT Laboratory.

Coordinator Ms. Jayashree Thakre informed the committee on planning of the scheme andactivities conducted by departments receiving funding from DBT under Star college scheme forbenefit of students.

Dr Suman Govil appreciated the activities, gave valuable suggestions and guidelines to the members inorder to implement Star scheme more effectively.

The course coordinator thanked all the members.

In the later part of the day the external experts visited the departments and interacted with staffmembers.

International Workshop on ‘Promotion of Angling as a

Sport among Women’

Department of Zoology in collaboration with MSAA, Naushad Ali Sarovar Samvardhini, Indian

Association of Aquatic Biologists and All India Game Fishing Association had successfully organized

an International Workshop on ‘Promotion of Angling as a Sport among Women’ on Sunday, 16th

December 2018 at MSAA Conference Hall, Powai Lake, Mumbai; under the aegis of University of

Mumbai.

In the first general staff meeting of college it was decided by consensus that the Department of Zoology

would organize an International Conference. The IQAC forwarded the proposal to the College

Development Committee (CDC) for final approval. The department of Zoology prepared the proposal

and forwarded it to the collaborative agencies.

A committee comprising of the staff members was formed to organize the conference. The head in

consultation with senior staff members defined the scope and thrust area of the conference. Various

committees were formed. The convener conducted separate meetings with each committee on regular

basis to monitor the preparation for the conferences. The Principal was updated about the progress of

conference work from time to time. The college covered the expenses of the conference along with the

collaborated agencies. The combined efforts of the Management, Principal, Convener, Committee

Members and Student Volunteers were fruitful in the successful organization of an event of academic

and organizational magnitude.

A one-day International Workshop on

‘Promotion of Angling as a sport among Women’

It was held at MSAA Powai on 16th December 2018 organized by Dept. of Zoology and IQAC of G. M. Momin

Women's College Bhiwandi and Maharashtra State Angling Association (MSAA) Mumbai including other

NGOs like Naushad Ali Sarovar Samvardhini (NASS), Indian Association of Aquatic Biologists (IAAB)

(Hyderabad) and All India Game Fishing Association (AIGFA) under aegis of University of Mumbai.

People across the society participated in this event to promote Angling and Women Empowerment.

Principals from various colleges, teachers mainly Zoologists, females from corporate world and Indian and

foreign student delegates participated in this workshop.

Event was conducted in three sessions; first session was presentation on lake conservation, fisheries and

Angling. Assistance Commissioner Fisheries Govt. Of India explained importance of inland fisheries and

opportunity provided by the government. Second session was about the Lake fishes and art of Angling, which

were conducted by ace anglers Mr. Jalal Kazi and Gorden Rodriguez. A demonstration session was kept for

new anglers. All participants were given separate spot for Angling competition.

Earliest catch, maximum catch and largest catch were given prizes.

Mr. Kamlesh Sharma, Secretary MSAA initiated awards for serving lake environment. MSAA life time Award

is given to great musician as well as super skilled Angler Naushad Ali, another ace angler Mr. Gorden

Rodriguez for his 47 years of contribution in angling and great ecologist Dr. S. G. Yeragi who has published

more than 450 research papers on ecology.

This was a unique programme held in Mumbai to promote the women anglers; we received women

participation from across India. All together 65 anglers participated in this event.
