EXT. SPACE

We see nothing, only the glow of hundreds of stars, billionsmore which we cannot see. The camera basks at this amazingsight for a LONG BEAT before slowly spiraling around to seea Federation Starbase. There is no activity around thestarbase, all is peaceful and well, and we can see peoplewalking past the windows every so often.

CROSS (V.O.)Space... the final frontier... avast void, filled with nothing butdust, until one moment during anendless eternity, two atomscollided... and made life. All ofus, living now, and at any point intime, in all of the different cornersof the universe, were created fromdust... Over time, primitive lifebegan to develop... and the peoplegradually realized how their universewas born... but still didn't see thesignificance of it... all of usbrothers, all of us sisters... yetthe fight for the dust goes on...

As we listen to Cross's monologue, we see a Klingon shipdecloak and approach the starbase, before another decloaks, and another and another until we can begin to see an attackformation developing and heading towards the starbase.

At this point music should gradually begin to build behindCross's speech, that will have reached the usual volume bythe time it ends, muting out any sounds or voices which wehear. We can not hear anything, not even weapons firing...

At this point the lead Klingon ship begins to open fire onthe starbase, followed by another ship and another until thefleet of ships has split into four separate waves andsurrounded the starbase, all ready to fire or firing.

INT. STARBASE -- COMMAND CENTER

The nerve center of the starbase is shaken by weapons fireas we see the familiar turbolift doors swish open, giving usa quick glance at the rider...

INT. STARBASE -- TURBOLIFT

Looking out at the command center from the inside of thelift, as the occupier steps outside and looks out at thehive of activity going on around him.

RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - TEASER 2.

EXT. SPACE

The Klingon ships continue with their attack, but the starbaseseems to be ready to bite back, with shields now raised, deflecting some of the weapons which are being aimed at it.The starbase finally fires some of its own weapons, the firsttorpedoes and phasers taking some Klingon ships with them asthey disperse into space.

INT. STARBASE -- COMMAND CENTER

The camera swings around to reveal the face of ADMIRALPORTMAN, barking orders at his crew as he attempts to savehis starbase and his crew from impending doom. The oddsaren't good... a fleet of Klingon ships against onestarbase...

EXT. SPACE

Some of the Klingon ships veer down, heading towards thelower part of the starbase, and begin firing, the shieldsflicker as they absorb the energy from the weapons beingfired, but shields are no match for the amount of ships firingweapons at it, and they gradually seem to slowly fade, beforegoing out of existence all together. The Klingon shipscontinue to fire, regardless.

INT. STARBASE -- CORRIDOR

Giant windows grace the side of the corridor, where we seetwo Klingon ships gradually come into view. A female Starfleetofficer walks by, before realizing what she is seeing andbeginning to run for her life as the Klingons begin to fire. The shields don't last long and the entire section is engulfedin flames before being blown out into space... leaving uswith no clue to the fate of the officer...

INT. STARBASE -- COMMAND CENTER

Red alert lights flash and the crew are sweating. Portmancontinues to shout orders as the command center shakesvigorously. Portman looks down at a console, studying somereadings, and looks confused...

EXT. SPACE

We see the Klingons attacking more of the lower sections andmore of them being blown out into space as they continuewith their attacks. This is an attack unlike anything wehave ever seen before, though the starbase has powerfulweapons, it is quite simply outnumbered and outgunned, nothaving any support craft in orbit. The attack is purelydevastating.

Page 4: STAR TREK: RENAISSANCE Rob Jelley & James Sampson · hive of activity going on around him. RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - TEASER 2. EXT. SPACE ... Sparks fly and a huge explosion

RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - TEASER 3.

INT. STARBASE -- CREW QUARTERS

A man pulls on his Starfleet uniform before racing out ofhis quarters as a woman joins him, coming out of the door. They embrace and kiss, before quickly running out and intothe corridor...

INT. STARBASE -- CORRIDOR

Sparks fly and a huge explosion rocks the deck and the twoshake, the man falling to the ground. He pulls himself upjust as he looks behind him to see a huge fireball headingtowards them...

INT. STARBASE -- COMMAND CENTER

The deck shakes with seemingly the most devastating explosionyet and Portman seems to shout some familiar words... "ABANDONSHIP" before heading towards another console as the rest ofthe crew file into turbolifts and emergency stairwells.

EXT. SPACE

The Klingons come around for another attack, with two of theships veering off from the rest...

INT. STARBASE -- COMMAND CENTER

Only Portman and two others are left, and they tap theirconsoles, performing the final weapon and damage controlsettings before racing for the turbolift...

EXT. SPACE

Escape pods fly away from the starbase's hull and into thedebris field where wreckage from the starbase and destroyedKlingon ships rest, but the Klingons aren't coming aroundfor another attack as we first thought... but retreating...

INT. STARBASE -- COMMAND CENTER

Portman hurries past a huge observation port on his way tothe turbolift, and as he looks out his eyes widen with shock. The two officers behind him shout for him, but Portman ismotionless, and doesn't say anything... and the two officersfinally seeing what he is seeing, and let out one last shout, before closing the doors and abandoning their commandingofficer...

We finally see what Portman is seeing... two Klingon warshipsheading towards the starbase, gathering speed as they headtowards us...

ANGLE ON PORTMAN

Standing in front of the window with a dumbfounded look onhis face, before we cut back to the window with the ships

appearing almost touchable, with the image of Portmanreflecting in the window.

EXT. SPACE

The Klingon ships hit their target and there is a hugeexplosion, sending out a SHOCKWAVE which knocks all of theescape pods off course, vaporizing most of them as it hitsthem. Suddenly there is another, even bigger explosion as ahuge FLASH of white light fills the screen, and from thiswe...

ACT ONE

FADE IN:

INT. READY ROOM

CROSS is sitting at his desk, staring at a PADD. ELRIS isstanding opposite him, hands clasped tightly behind her back, looking straight at him. He looks pale, before looking upat her.

CROSS(weakly)

I... I don't know what to say.

ELRISI'm sorry, Neil. But I've made upmy mind.

CROSSYou didn't think of consulting mefirst?

ELRISThere was nothing to consult youabout. This is my decision. Minealone.

Cross stands up, and walks around the desk towards her.

CROSSBut it affects us both, obviously.

(beat)I thought things were better betweenus now... I thought we'd made somuch progress over this last year...

ELRISI know you do, but for me, nothing'schanged.

He nods.

CROSSEven though it has for me?

ELRISIt looks that way. I can't keep onpretending that everything we'vebeen through warrants still beingyour wife. I think that this lastyear's proved that.

CROSSAnd what makes you think this nextyear's going to be any different?

CROSS (CONT'D)Do you think a divorce will changethings between us?

ELRISBecause I've been thinking aboutleaving the Enterprise.

CROSSLeaving?

ELRISI've been in touch with one of myfriends at the research base on Bajor. A new post's opened up... I'm thinkingof applying for it.

CROSSOh.

There's a long beat.

ELRISI don't know what to say to you,Neil... it's...

CROSS(interrupts)

I understand.

ELRISYou do?

CROSSI understand that you're doing thisout of spite and that you're doingthis because you never have wantedto be here. This is the easy wayout for you -- you get rid of me andthe Enterprise all in one fell swoop.

ELRISThat's not it at all! I've madefriends here... I've made a life formyself and I've tried more then Iever thought I could. I've had justabout as much as I can take of you,and I've had my fair share ofexperiences out here on the frontieras well. I'm ready to move on.

CROSS(shouts)

Then move the hell on out of my readyroom.

Elris turns to leave, but Cross stops her.

CROSS (CONT'D)(calmer)

I'm sorry... it's difficult to accept.

ELRISI realize that... I know it willtake time.

CROSSGood.

Cross looks at Elris, from the look we can tell that he isstill in love with her... and Elris realizes this too, andlooks away uncomfortably.

ELRISI'm going to get going.

Cross is about to say something when the comm CHIRPS.

GREY'S COMM VOICEGrey to Captain Cross. Sir, it'stime.

Cross flinches -- he does not need this now. He sighs.

CROSSAll right, I'll be right there. Cross out.

He looks at Elris again.

CROSS (CONT'D)I need time.

She nods.

INT. ENGINEERING

There is a large crowd gathered in from of the warp core. There is a banner slung overhead with the words: "Open forBusiness Again." Amongst the crowd are BOYLE, KINNAN, Y'LAN,TALORA, DOJAR and QUINLAN. There is a raised dais in frontof the warp core. Everyone is talking excitedly. GREYenters.

GREYHe's on his way. He sounded a bit...preoccupied.

BOYLEHe's always preoccupied.

A door opens, and Cross enters. The floor murmurs as hesteps up to the dais.

RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - ACT ONE 8.

CROSSSorry I'm a couple of minutes late.

He presses on a PADD and begins to read. As he reads thefollowing speech, we see the various expressions of the peoplelistening to him.

CROSS (CONT'D)It has been almost a year now sinceI joined the Enterprise, a year ofchange and growth, a year of discoveryand adventure, a year of highs and ayear of lows. We have seen manyamazing sights, met many wonderfulpeople. We've given hope where beforethere was none, inspiration wherebefore there was only despair, andjoy where before there was onlymisery. But we have also encounteredmany problems, people and races whodo not share our quest forenlightenment. When the Q'tamiattacked us nearly seven weeks ago,the roof caved in, both literallyand metaphorically. We didn't knowwhich way to turn, why this hadhappened to us, why we had beenviolated in this way. But now, wehave come back, stronger than before, with our eyes opened to the perilsthat are before us, but with also anew optimism that whatever the futurecan throw at us, we are ready toface it. I was told that it wouldbe at least two and a half monthsbefore the Enterprise would be fullyfit again but now, in a feat thatthrough the ages Enterprise engineershave become renowned for, a miraclehas been worked, and we stand here, just seven weeks afterwards, and canofficially declare the Enterprisefully fit again... Lieutenant?

Grey steps forward with a piece of engineering equipment. He bends down to a floorplate.

GREYThe last stembolt to be fixed...

He presses the piece of equipment into the floor panel andthere is a click.

GREY (CONT'D)I do now declare the Enterprise openonce again.

Page 10: STAR TREK: RENAISSANCE Rob Jelley & James Sampson · hive of activity going on around him. RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - TEASER 2. EXT. SPACE ... Sparks fly and a huge explosion

RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - ACT ONE 9.

Everyone bursts into a round of applause.

CROSSSo many thanks to everyone who hasworked so hard over the past fewweeks, often extra shifts and intheir spare time. The ship has neverlooked better.

The crowd murmur their appreciation. Grey whispers somethingto Cross.

CROSS (CONT'D)Oh yes, and this is a doublecelebration. As you know, at theend of the week Lieutenant Kinnan isleaving us, to take up his new postas Chief Engineer on the Leviathan.

More applause.

CROSS (CONT'D)Obviously, we wish him well on hisnew ship. We'll all miss you.

Both Boyle and Grey grin at Kinnan.

CROSS (CONT'D)However, his leaving creates a gapin the command structure inengineering. Now Lieutenant Grey isan exemplary engineer, but no man isan island, and we needed to findsomeone who had the necessaryexpertise to support him, and...

(smiling affectionately)...the necessary patience to workalongside him. We think we havefound that officer.

(dramatic pause)Please step forward, Lieutenant Boyle.

Boyle looks shocked.

BOYLEMe?

CROSSI don't see any other LieutenantBoyle around here, do you?

She smiles and walks forward.

CROSS (CONT'D)Now Lieutenant Grey has always beentelling us what a good officer you

CROSS (CONT'D)are, but it was only recently, whenwe've seen all your efforts aroundthe ship in the repairs, that therest of us have come to appreciateit. I don't think I could turn aroundamongst the repair crews withoutfinding you in the middle of them, directing operations and gettingyour hands dirty. I think the restof you here would agree too...

A small ripple of applause.

CROSS (CONT'D)So, it gives me great pleasure toaward you this.

He steps forward to her, and fixes another RANK PIP to hercollar and smiles.

CROSS (CONT'D)Congratulations.

Another round of applause.

Boyle steps up to the podium, smiling.

BOYLEErm, I don't know what to say. Ihope this promotion is not justbecause I'm sleeping with the boss.

Appreciative laughter. Grey goes noticeably red.

BOYLE (CONT'D)Awww, look, I've embarrassed him. But, seriously, I'm sure Erik wouldnot mind if I pointed out the debtof gratitude we all have to RobKinnan. I may have been there tellingeveryone what to do and where to go,but without his know-how, I don'tthink we'd have finished anywherenear as early. Rob, this ship isgoing to miss you.

More applause.

QUINLAN(whispering to Talora)

I'm getting tired of applauding. When is someone going to say howgreat I am?

Talora looks at her disapprovingly as Boyle steps down.

CROSSCeremony's over, the party's justgetting started. See you all in TenForward.

They all start to file out. Grey chats to Kinnan.

GREYI bet the Leviathian isn't half theship ours is.

KINNANI won't mind as long as it has onlyhalf the excitement this one does.

They laugh as they head out.

LEVIATHAN'S OPS OFFICER (V.O.)We're still getting nothing, Captain.

INT. LEVIATHAN -- BRIDGE

It looks practically identical to the Enterprise bridge, except that it has practically no familiar faces on it atall. In the hot seat is CAPTAIN JOEL. She looks grim.

JOELKeep trying, Ensign.

LEVIATHAN'S OPS OFFICER(in background)

Leviathan to any escape pods. Doyou copy?

(continues inbackground)

She shakes her head as ADMIRAL DELFUNE enters from aturbolift.

DELFUNEAnything?

JOELNo. No life signs at all. We'vescanned every inch of the wreckage.

Delfune nods.

JOELThey could have been taken hostage?

DELFUNEAny attackers causing damage likethis won't be very interested inhostages, Captain.

(beat)Any clue on who did this?

JOELSeveral large pieces of debris donot correspond with Starfleet design.

She leads the Admiral over to OPS and points out somethingon a panel.

JOEL (CONT'D)There is a cluster here that couldbe the remains of a ship. Lookslike maybe they were able to takeout one with them.

DELFUNECan we bring it aboard?

JOELWe're not detecting any contaminants.

DELFUNEGood, do so. The sooner we find outwho we're dealing with, the better.

Y'LANCaptain, I am uncertain as to thepurpose of this gathering.

CROSSIt's a celebration, Y'lan.

Y'LANWhat does it achieve?

CROSSIt makes people happy. We are pleasedthat the Enterprise is repaired, andwe are pleased our friends are makingprogress in their careers, and wewant to share their happiness withthem.

Y'LANHappiness?

CROSSYes, Y'lan.

Y'LANAre you happy, Captain?

Cross looks at him for a moment.

MOLARThe Reformists have been gettingmore desperate over the past fewmonths. We've been able to trackand eliminate a number of their bases. They're losing resources fast.

JOELWhy attack us though?

DELFUNEAttention. We're an easier targetand as supporters of the Imperialistgovernment...

DRELLI wasn't aware we had formerlydeclared ourselves supporters of theImperialists.

DELFUNEIn deed if not in word, PresidentDrell.

JOELDeclaring war on us is a bit morethan just attention seeking, surely?

DELFUNEWho knows what goes on in the mindsof Klingons.

Present company excepted, of course.

THELSo what do we do?

CROSSWe retaliate.

He hasn't spoken before, and some have forgotten he's there. They all turn round and look at him.

CROSS (CONT'D)Do unto others what they do untoyou.

DELFUNEI agree. And fast. If we don't,we're giving them a charter to do itagain. We have to hit them, and hitthem hard.

JOELCaptain Molar, what kind of defensesdo their bases have?

MOLARIt varies. Usually between five andten Negh'var class ships, maybe aNapoch or two as well.

CHIANGThe Thunderbird is at your disposal,Admiral.

DELFUNEThank you, Admrial. This should bea display of force, so we'll call inthe Scimitars, too.

CHIANGAdmiral, that seems a bit excessive.

DELFUNEWe have to get our message across,or do I have to remind you that itis because of them Henry Portman'sbody is drifting in space?

Cross winces at this, and Delfune notices.

CHIANGWe'll have to find them first.

JOELI think we have a lead.

JOEL (CONT'D)We've been able to trace residualwarp signatures leaving the site. They all headed in the same direction, and based on them, we were able toproject their destination.

A number of dotted lines span out over the starchart. Onegoes through a patch of light.

JOEL (CONT'D)Best guess is they went into thatnebula.

Cross reacts when he sees it.

CROSSWhich nebula is it?

JOELIt's...

Y'lan is at his science table, placidly, as Cross is standingat him looking very angry.

CROSS(shouting)

...the Coular Nebula! Did you knowthey were there, Y'lan? Did you?

Y'LANCaptain, I had just come out ofstasis. I was not certain where Iwas, let alone know where anybodyelse was.

CROSSY'lan, I have neither the time northe inclination to play these gameswith you today. Did you know theReformists were in the nebula?

Y'LANThere were no Klingons present whenyou rescued me.

Cross looks at him doubtfully. There is a beat.

Y'LAN (CONT'D)However, the Hegemony had amassedevidence suggesting that they hadbeen there in your past.

CROSSWas the base still operational?

Y'LANI believe so.

CROSSYou knew they were there, all thistime? People have died because ofthis, Y'lan, does that mean anythingto you?

Y'LANThey would have died anyway. Thispreoccupation with your mortality isfascinating...

CROSSYou are a member of this crew, andyou knew they were a threat.

Y'LANYes, Captain, but I was uncertain towhat exactly that threat would entail. I thought it would be intriguing tosee. You must remember Captain, although I am a member of this crewour priorities are rarely the same. I am studying your culture, nothingmore.

Cross swallows deeply.

CROSSAre they there now?

Y'lan says nothing.

CROSS (CONT'D)(fuming)

Answer me, dammit, or I'll have youthrown out of the nearest airlock.

Y'LANThey are still there.

CROSSWere they responsible for the attack?

Y'LANThere is a considerable amount ofevidence pointing to that conclusion.

INT. SICKBAY OFFICE

Elris is seated at her desk. She doesn't look happy and hasa tired, pained, guilt driven expression on her face. She'sdeep in thought and doesn't hear the doors open, or thefootstep of feet approaching, or even the figure walkingpast the glass.

By the time she notices someone is at her door and who it isit's too late as:

CROSSWas it something I did, said?

Elris slowly shakes her head, and thinks of a response.

ELRISThis isn't anything personal.

She flinches at her choice of words.

A long beat.

ELRISI mean that you haven't done anythingwrong. To provoke my actions. I'vejust reached a time in my life whereI feel that I'm ready to...

Cross interrupts, finishing Elris's sentence for her.

CROSSMove on? Yeah, you've mentionedthat.

ELRISIt's not your fault.

CROSSIf it's not then why are you goingthrough with this? Why not get thedivorce if the time comes that youreally need it?

ELRISNot if. When, Neil. And the timeis now.

Cross is obviously put back by this and there is a beat.

CROSSI see.

There is a long pause.

CROSS (CONT'D)I hope that we can still be friends.

ELRISWe've already tried that...

(beat, then slowly)...and I've already told you thatI've seriously been considering aboutleaving the Enterprise.

Cross remains silent.

CROSS(interrupts)

So you admit that you still havefeelings for me?

A beat.

ELRISYes.

(shakes head)No... I mean no. Not in the way youmean.

(beat)We had something, Neil, we hadsomething very special. I lovedyou. But now... it's different. Wecan't live in the past anymore. It's over.

Cross throws her the PADD.

CROSSObviously.

ELRISI'm going to go to my quarters --get some rest for tomorrow.

CROSSIt's your fault, you know.

Elris chooses to ignore him and exits. Cross continues tostand where he is.

Elris beckons her in.

They are only dimly lit. A few loose tissues are strewnaround the room. Quinlan and Elris walk over to the sofa.

ELRISI feel so bad.

QUINLANAbout Portman?

ELRIS(shakes her head)

Yes, but not just that. Last night, before we knew what had happened, Igave Neil divorce papers.

QUINLANOh...

Quinlan cuddles her as she starts crying again.

QUINLANHey, come on, the Captain's a strongguy, he'll be all right. You weren'tto know about this.

ELRISI'm... worried about him, and hismood. He's emotional, he reactswith his heart, not his head. I'mworried about what he's going to do.

QUINLANI'm sure if he does anything too badTalora will soon let him know. Comeon, it's going to be all right. Everything will work out...

Elris continues to cry over Quinlan's shoulder, and fromQuinlan's reaction we can see she is more worried than she'stelling her. From this we...

CROSS (CONT'D)It doesn't seem like five minutesago since you were saying that we'dhave a peaceful new year, does it?

TALORAApparently not.

Cross gives a half laugh.

CROSSA lot can happen in a few days, can'tit? Things change more in a matterof minutes then they do over thecourse of a whole year.

TALORAIt is a lot harder to contemplatewhat has happened when it's personalto you.

CROSSI can't help but remember what thelast words were that he said to me... "I fear for the future"... how righthe was.

TALORAWe all fear for the future, Captain. It is the one great unknown.

CROSSSomeone once said that all we haveto fear is fear itself. But I thinkthe fear of the unknown is a lotmore powerful.

TALORAYet it is what drives us all. It'swhat keeps us all living.

CROSSI've often wondered that. What thepoint to life is, and I've neverfound an answer.

(beat)I thought I'd found it, once. Ithought that all I had to live forwas hope that things would get better. And for a while they did...

(shakes head)But after you've lived in POW campfor two years, what do you expect? You soon realize that things aren'tso perfect.

CROSS (CONT'D)(beat)

In some ways I wish I'd never left. A controlled environment... thingsdidn't seem so random. Death wasstill something that hunted everyonebut apart from that there was nothing. I just hoped that I'd still be alivethe next day... then the next andthe next. I don't think I cancontemplate how complicated thingsare now.

TALORAI think that a lot of people who arein prison camps now would disagree. Freedom is something we all value...and that can easily be forgotten.

CROSSHow can there be freedom in the galaxywhen there's bastards like theReformists?

There's a long pause.

CROSS (CONT'D)You lost your brother, didn't you?

TALORAYes.

CROSSEver since I met Admiral PortmanI've considered him the closest thingI've got to family... and now he'sgone too. I'm beginning to feellike everyone I care for is beingtargeted... and it doesn't feel right.

(beat)When I was in the POW camp some ofthe kids there told me how lucky Iwas that I hadn't felt death before, because I'd never lost anyone beforethat. Because I'd clung to the hopethat my Dad and sister were stillalive...

TALORAI didn't know that.

CROSS(half smiles)

It sounds like you're volunteeringto keep me sane, Commander.

TALORA(jokingly)

If it's really necessary.

Cross half laughs.

EXT. REFORMIST COLONY -- COULAR -- DAY

The evacuation continues as intermittent phaser volleys andthe occasional torpedo streak through the air onto the town. A few buildings are up in smoke, but there are much fewerKlingons still heading for the central building. On a hilla little away, a Klingon stands watching.

KLINGON COLONY COMMANDERStotz to Kovor, evacuation nearlycomplete.

QUINLANCaptain, I'm going to pull round foranother pass.

EXT. REFORMIST COLONY -- COULAR -- DAY

The Enterprise swoops low over the town, causing such a rushof air that the few remaining Klingons on the street areknocked down. As debris from the less stable buildingsshowers down around them, the two Klingon ships also swoopby, still firing. The Enterprise maneuvers up and around.

INT. BRIDGE

Just as the Enterprise reaches the pass, the phasers fire atthe two peaks. The Federation ship squeezes through justbefore a mass of snow and debris from the two peaks tumblesdown. The Negh'var, directly behind them, is caught in thetwin avalanches. The weight of snow pushes it into the sideof one of the mountains, where it CRASHES.

The Enterprise does a long graceful arc and heads back theway it came. The Negh'var continues its pursuit, firing, with the Enterprise's return fire noticeably dimmer thanbefore. As they swing over the last peak, we see the Reformistcolony valley spread out as before. It is now covered insmoke and thick yellow flames can be seen.

INT. BRIDGE

As before.

DOJARShields are now forty five percent. It's the best we can do.

CROSSSukothai, where is this undergroundbunker?

SUKOTHAIThe concentration is over on theleft side of the colony, near thatlarge water tank. The entrance isfrom the building in the center, butthat's not where they are.

CROSSAll right. Dojar, listen carefully. This is what we're going to do...

EXT. REFORMIST COLONY -- COULAR -- DAY

A tractor beam shoots from the Enterprise and traps theNegh'var. Instantly, the Enterprise swings upwards, and themomentum pulls the Negh'var down hard. It crashes into theearth by the water tank, as the Enterprise releases the beam.

INT. BUNKER

The Klingons cry out as the roof caves in with the, to them, giant Negh'var. Almost instantly it erupts into a hugefireball which engulfs the whole bunker. The roof collapseson the hellish scene amid Klingon howls of despair.

In the center of the room there is a casketthat is raised up on a hand made, finely crafted wooden stand. A plaque rests on top of the coffin, reading HENRY PORTMAN,no mention of his rank or Starfleet standing.

The crowd, apparently, doesn't recognize his Starfleetstanding either, as Admiral DELFUNE is present, along with afew others, who are gathered together.

The camera slowly moves over the crowd to a corner, where asolemn Elris and a sober Quinlan stand, staying out of theway in a far corner. The most noticeable thing about Quinlanis that she doesn't have a drink in her hand, while many ofthe officers around her do.

ELRISDid you know it was Henry whointroduced me to Neil?

QUINLANNo.

ELRISIt was quite a peculiar introductionreally... Henry came in carryingNeil, after he'd been hurt by afalling bulkhead and placed him onmy operating table.

Y'LANThat is the nature of all mortalbeings. You know that this day willcome, and yet you appear surprisedwhen it does. When death occurs inthe Hegemony, Q'tami simply acceptthere is nothing that can be doneand that that entity will never beable to be seen again. Except throughtime travel.

DOJARNot very reassuring, Y'lan. Yougoing to share these thoughts withthe Captain?

Y'LANI do not believe that I am on "goodterms" with the Captain, right now. I do not think that he would wish tosee me.

DOJARMaybe he won't. But you might besurprised.

Y'LANI have been on your vessel for almosta year now, Lieutenant. I almosthave all of your reactions workedout. There is very little thatsurprises me now.

DOJARYou might be surprised, Y'lan... youmight not have seen as nearly asmuch as you think you have.

Y'LANPerhaps not. But if nothing else,it is indeed an intriguing worldthat you humanoids live in.

DOJARThank you, Y'lan.

Y'LANI am unsure as to whether or notthat was a compliment.

He smiles, and they both walk away from the casket.

DOJARSounds about right.

INT. CORRIDOR

The figure we saw earlier rounds a corner of a corridor, noone else is present and he walks with his head down.

A figure of solemnity in a sea of solitude.

CUT TO:

INT. STARBASE -- OBSERVATION LOUNGE

Stood near the entrance of the room are Admiral Delfune,Captain Joel and Commander Talora, all looking contemplative.

DELFUNEIs Captain Cross usually a man forlate entrances?

TALORAIf you are implying that the Captainwill not be present, I believe thatyou are very much mistaken, Admiral.

DELFUNEWe'll see. Portman meant a lot toCross.

TALORAI have no reason to doubt theCaptain's intentions. He requestedthat this wake take place and reasonwould suggest that he plans to attendit.

DELFUNEHuman emotion can be a funny thing.

TALORAI believe that Captain Cross is ontop of his emotion.

DELFUNEJust like when he deviated from theattack plan and took the Enterprisedown to the surface? Or how aboutwhen he allowed the Klingons on thespace station to die? Surely thatwas simply an act of vengeance?

TALORAWas the entire mission not an act ofvengeance, Admiral?

DELFUNEIt did not involve killing Reformistcasualties. You know as well as Ido that Cross's actions were impulsiveand dangerous. The day he's broughtto book, they won't do him any favors.

Page 68: STAR TREK: RENAISSANCE Rob Jelley & James Sampson · hive of activity going on around him. RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - TEASER 2. EXT. SPACE ... Sparks fly and a huge explosion

RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - ACT FIVE 67.

TALORAI'm sure that you didn't agonizeover Captain Cross's actions... youseem to have quite a tough skin.

DELFUNEI have, Commander. How else would Ilive with myself from day to dayotherwise? Every Starfleet officerneeds one.

TALORAI understand. Each plan that youhave set in motion to attempt toremove Captain Cross from theEnterprise, or set a plan in motionthat would result in his removal, have all ended in an embarrassmentor a compromise for you.

DELFUNEWhat is that supposed to mean?

TALORAIt means, Admrial, that we know whatyou're doing at Starfleet Command, and that while you are keeping avery close eye on every move CaptainCross makes... we are also keeping avery close eye on you.

DELFUNE(laughs)

Interesting.

Talora raises an eyebrow at Delfune's response to herspeculations.

TALORAYou're not worried about that?

DELFUNENo, Commander... I just don't care.Who are the rest of the Admiraltygoing to believe? The controversialCaptain Neil Cross and the crew ofthe Enterprise, or the Admiral thathas only one black spot next to hername?

TALORAThat remains to be seen. If historyhas shown anything, it is never tounderestimate the crew of a shipnamed Enterprise.

RENAISSANCE: "Shadows of a New Dawn" - ACT FIVE 68.

DELFUNEAnd we wouldn't want to break thattradition... would we?

There is a long beat as both women stand contemplating, apparently totally different thoughts passing each woman'smind.

DELFUNE (CONT'D)I will say this for Captain Cross;he has followed his mentor's traitof not playing by the rules.

TALORAHow so?

DELFUNEAdmiral Portman was always somewhatof a controversial character. Hesupported the Reformists, he likedto be out on active duty even as anAdmiral... and he supported NeilCross.

Talora pauses, and turns to look at Delfune, looking quiteinfuriated.

TALORAI cannot believe that you arecomparing one of the finest, bravest, most honorable men I've ever had thepleasure of knowing to a group ofevil power hungry Klingons whodestroyed one of Starfleet'sstarbase's and its entire crew. You, whom with every move are removingthe values for what Starfleet hasstood for, for almost three centuries. To be quite honest, Admiral, I donot believe that you have the right.

Delfune looks quite surprised at Talora's loyalty towardsher, Captain, it was not what she was expecting.

DELFUNELoyalty is such a rare thing nowadays,it's almost... admirable. But Iwill give you one piece of advice,Commander. Captain Cross showedtoday he is not above putting hisentire crew at risk to fulfill somepersonal crusade. Be careful aroundhim. I don't think he's completelystable.

Talora just looks at her, knowing there is an element oftruth in what she says.

At this point the doors part and the room falls silent, asthe camera cuts back to behind the doors, as the figure inthe black suit walks in.

As the figure walks towards the center of the room, the cameraslowly moves around until we can see that the figure is noneother than CROSS. He stands tall and dignified, and is astark comparison to everyone else in the room wearing dressuniforms.

Cross stands alone, silent, for a few moments, half expectingsomeone to say something to him. But nothing comes. He looksout of the window and at the Enterprise, before moving hishead back.

CROSSI'd like to say a few words, if Imay.

There is still no noise, no objections, and everyone standswith their eyes intent on Cross. Cross himself only looksat those he believes that he can trust, making eye contactwith his senior staff, notably not Y'lan, before turningaround to look at Portman's casket as he reaches the eulogy'sconclusion.

CROSS (CONT'D)I knew Henry Portman for a long time.

(beat)He's been one of those people who'salways been there for me, no matterwhat.

(smiles)Henry was the man who told me totake hold of everything that lifehas to offer. He was the man whogave me command of a fine starshipand trusted me when no one else would.

(more serious)And he was also the man who introducedme to my wife... I learned a lotfrom Henry Portman... he had a heavyinfluence on my command style, andmy decision making, he helped shapemy conscience. I believe that anymistakes that I still have now...are just what he hadn't gotten aroundto rectifying yet...

(beat)I'm proud to have been able to callthis man my friend, and even moreso, my mentor.

(beat)Losing a mentor is one of the greatestchallenges you ever face.

CROSS (CONT'D)It's the moment we finally have tostand on our own two feet, the momentour support leaves us. I think he'sprepared me, and all of us, well. Ithink he'd like us to think this ofhim, some thoughts on death that Ifound. It says:

Throughout the poem, Cross should look strong, but stillsomehow broken. That he'd like to believe what the poem issaying, but still knows that he is going to miss his friend. The words themselves are by Henry Scott Holland, a Canon ofSt. Paul's Cathedral.

CROSS (CONT'D)"Death is nothing at all, I haveonly slipped away into the next room,I am I and you are you. Whatever wewere to each other, That we stillare. Call me by my old familiar name,Speak to me in the easy way whichyou always used. Put no differencein your tone, Wear no forced air ofsolemnity or sorrow. Laugh as wealways laughed at the little jokeswe enjoyed together, Pray, smile, think of me. Pray for me. Let my name be the house hold wordthat it always was, Let it be spokenwithout effect, Without the trace ofa shadow on it. Life means all thatit ever meant, It is the same as itever was; There is unbrokencontinuity. Why should I be out of mind becauseI am out of sight? I am waiting foryou, for an interval, somewhere verynear, Just round the corner. All is well."

Cross bows his head as he turns to look at the casket. Hecloses his eyes, hiding the one show of emotion that we haveseen since he has gotten there.

CROSS (CONT'D)(quietly and solitary)

You've been like a father to me. I'm going to miss you.

He rests his hand on the casket, before turning around, semi-recovered from the emotion he briefly shared with the casket.

CROSS (CONT'D)(quietly, but defined)

I'd like to propose a toast...(beat)

To Henry Portman. To the finestofficer I've ever known. To mymentor. And to my friend.

With that they all raise their glasses.

ALLTo Henry Portman.

As they drink their toast we slowly pan out from the sceneas Elris's voiceover is heard.

ELRIS (V.O.)This is not the end of our story, but merely the beginning. The Captainsaid the crew of the Enterprise hasalready faced many dangers, manyobstacles, but we know that they arebut the tip of the iceberg. Bigchanges are coming, and with themnew perils and new threats to ourway of life. Whether they be fromthe Klingons, the Q'tami, or eventhose who profess now to be ourfriends, the only thing we trulyknow about the undiscovered countryis that we know nothing at all. Andthe worst of those dangers we face, the ones that in the end are theonly ones to have the power to destroyus, are those that we face withinourselves, our own personal demons. The hardest fought battles that lieahead are those for our hearts, andfor our souls. It is how we face upto these challenges, and whether wecan dig deep within ourselves andfind the courage and resolve neededto overcome them, that will ultimatelydecide our destiny.

We finish on a close up on Cross's face, as he drinks histoast and we...

FADE OUT.
