TITLE CARD : A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

A vast sea of stars serves as the backdrop for the maintitle, followed by a roll up, which crawls up into infinity.

EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE

It is a time of decay. The GalacticRepublic, keeper of the peace for athousand years is losing influenceamongst its members. A challenge toits rule has come in the form ofthe Trade Federation.

Through agreements both peacefuland forced, the Federation gainsplanets to control their space,resources, and seats in theGalactic Senate. The peacefulplanet of Naboo and its young Queen

Amidala are their most recenttargets.

PAN DOWN to reveal one federation battleship. Pan, androtate around the ship to reveal an entire plane of them,curving off into the distance, forming a blockade. Panfurther to reveal the green and blue planet of Naboo. Fromits surface we see a glint of silver racing towards thecamera.

EXT. NABOO CRUISER - SPACE

The cruiser breaks through the atmosphere and shoots towardsthe blockade and certain death.

INT. FEDERATION BATTLESHIP - BRIDGE

NUTE GUNRAY and DAULTRAY DOFINE are observing the blockadefrom the bridge of one of the ships. DAULTRAY is examining aterminal.

DAULTRAYThe royal cruiser is approachingthe blockade!

NUTEAhhhh. Finally, the queen is readyto surrender and accept our terms!

INT. NABOO CRUISER - COCKPIT

We see the shoulders of OBI-WAN KENOBI and RIC OLIE in thepilots chairs of the cruiser. CAPTAIN PANAKA is standing offframe at the wall behind them. RIC reaches to adjust thethrottle on the console between them, but OBI-WAN prevents

him.

OBI-WANNot yet. We will wait until thelast second.


DAULTRAYThey are not slowing down.

NUTE

Call them, but prepare the tractorbeam just in case.


We see their shoulders and a view of the blockade loominglarge outside their front window.

RICWell be in tractor range in a fewseconds.

OBI-WANCAPTAIN PANAKA, be ready to givethe order to fire.

CAPTAIN PANAKAMy men are standing by.


DAULTRAYThey are not responding. Shall Iuse the tractor beam?

NUTECapture them.

OBI-WANCAPTAIN PANAKA, now!

CAPTAIN PANAKA

(into a communicator)You may fire Lieutenant.

EXT. ION CANNON - DAY

On the surface of Naboo, in the center of the capital city,next to the royal palace, the ion cannon fires.


A blue shot comes from the surface of Naboo. The ion blast

passes the silver cruiser, and hits the battleship directlyin front of it. The lights on the battlecruiser flicker out.The cruisers engines blaze into life, and it shoots towardthe blockade line.


DAULTRAYThe battleship in tractor range isdisabled! They will get through theblockade!

NUTEDestroy them!

DAULTRAYCan we kill the Quuen?

NUTEWe must!


We see the cannons of the blockade roar into life firinghundreds of shots per second. The cruiser deftly maneuvers,bucking and weaving in and around of the firing lines.

NUTEWhy havent they been destroyedyet?

DAULTRAYI do not know. They are flying asif they know where we will shoot.Ive only seen Jedi fly like that.

NUTEIs there a Jedi piloting the royalcruiser?


We see the concentrated face of OBI-WAN flying the ship.

RICDeflectors still at maximum. Ivenever heard of anyone making itthrough a blockade without gettinghit before.

OBI-WANWe arent out yet.


We see the Nabo cruiser bucking and weaving among the blastsfrom the blockade. Its movements are growing more variedand intense.


RICIts not a dogfighter you know.

OBI-WANYes, I can see that.


DAULTRAYImpossible!

NUTEThey can not possibly dodge at thisrange! Destroy them!


RICWere in the strike zone, we getthrough this were golden.

The ship takes fire from the battle ships. The cockpit isrocked several times in a row.

RICShoot! Aft deflectors just wentdown!

OBI-WAN

Just a little further.

RICWell have hyperdrive in a few moreseconds.


NUTE and DAULTRAY stand breathlessly watching the ship as itpasses the blockade line. NUTE leans into the monitor.


The cruiser takes fire, and the vessel is jolted by theblast.

INT. NABOO CRUISER - QUI GONS QUARTERS

We see a close shot of a cup of tea falling off a table andonto the floor.


The group in the cockpit is jolted.

RICSteady! Jumping to lightspeed!

From the cockpit we see the stars shooting toward the shipas it jumps to lightspeed.

EXT. FEDERATION BATTLESHIPS - SPACE

The ship jumps away from NABOO and the blockade.


The occupants of the cruiser cockpit cheer and pat OBI-WANon the back.

CAPTAIN PANAKAWell done OBI-WAN! Very impressive.We need a man like you on the Naboosecurity forces.

OBI-WANIf I never make knight, I may haveto take you up on that offer.

CAPTAIN PANAKA

When you have time to spare theQueen will want to thank youpersonally.

OBI-WANI can see her now.

INT. FEDERATION BATTLESHIP - MEETING CHAMBER

NUTE and DAULTRAY are in a meeting chamber speaking with thehologram of a cloaked figure, DARTH SIDIOUS.

NUTEThey broke through the blockadewith the help of their ion cannonand jumped into lightspeed, but notwithout sustaining some damage.

DAULTRAYMy team believes that theirhyperdrive system was damaged. Theywill have to stop soon for repair.

DARTH SIDIOUS

Were you trying to kill the Queen?

NUTE(Looks to Daultray)

They were escaping. We had nochoice. And if the queen dies, itis as good to us as an officialsurrender.

DARTH SIDIOUSShe is the embodiment of theirgovernment. If she has notabdicated and is still alive, theirgovernment still exists. An elegantsolution, but she escaped.

DAULTRAYWe are outfitting a ship to trackthem down.

DARTH SIDIOUSNo. Youve failed once already.Youll lose sympathy in the senateif youre discovered performing a

hunt for the queen. Allow me totake care of this. Ill make sureshe simply disappears.

DARTH SIDIOUSContinue on your schedule. I havejust the man to take care of ourlittle runaway quee.

INT. DARK LAIR

DARTH SIDIOUS turns from the holographic projects that areturning off, and looks to DARTH MAUL.

DARTH SIDIOUSThe queen is accompanied by an agedJedi master and his apprentice.They will be no match for you. Donot reveal yourself if possible.

Where will you search first?

DARTH MAULIf the federation men are correct,they will not get far. They willseek a backwater planet.

INT. NABOO CRUISER - ROYAL APARTMENTS

QUEEN AMIDALA sits on a chair at the back of the room,attended by her six handmaidens. She wears a silverheadpiece, and an elaborate dress of muted colors. She sitsregally, watching CAPTAIN PANAKA and OBI-WAN. To her leftstands JAR JAR BINKS. Her handmaidens have paused theiroccupations for the moment, except for the handmaiden PADME,who sits with her feet up on a couch, and ignores theproceedings.

CAPTAIN PANAKADue to the Jedi OBI-WAN KENOBIsefforts we were able to passthrough the blockade almost

unscathed. I brought him here soyou that he could be honored withyour gratitude.

The Queen opens her mouth to speak, but JAR JAR BINKS stepsforward and starts speaking immediately.

JAR JARThe Gungans will be mighty happythat JAR JAR is still alive. If Ihad known I was going to die, Iwould have never gotten on thisship. Many thanks for saving me.

CAPTAIN PANAKAJAR JAR BINKS is the ambassador ofthe Gungans, the indigenous peopleof Naboo.

JAR JARYes, the Gungans are mightythankful and always show ourgratitude.

(fishes around in vest forsomething)

I have for you a great reward amongthe Gungans.

JAR JAR BINKS pulls a wriggling frog creature from his vestand slaps it in OBI-WANs open hand. It is slimy, andOBI-WAN does not quite know what to do with it. JAR JARimmediately begins eyeing it greedily.

JAR JARAre you going to eat that?

OBI-WANUh, not at the moment.

JAR JAR looks longingly at the frog for a second longer,then shoots its tongue out and snaps it back from OBI-WANshand, eating it. He munches it relishingly, and returns tohis seat. QUEEN AMIDALA waits until he has seated beforespeaking.

QUEEN AMIDALAI also I extend my gratitude tothose who ensure my safety. JediOBI-WAN I thank you for yourefforts in this matter.

OBI-WAN bows with respect. The handmaiden PADME stands to

address the queen.

PADMEYour Highness, do I have yourpermission to speak?

QUEEN AMIDALAPlease, Padme, speak.

PADMEIt is worth noting that OBI-WANwhom we have called Jedi, is stillonly a Paduan learner. He is an

apprentice to the Jedi MasterQUI-GON JINN. The royal gratitudeshould be bestowed upon the master,not the apprentice.

QUEEN AMIDALAThank you handmaiden, it would havebeen an embarassment to overlookthis. OBI-WAN, go directly to yourmaster and relay our royalgratitude for your efforts.

OBI-WAN approaches the doors of QUI-GONs quarters, andknocks on the door.

QUI-GON V.O.

Enter.

OBI-WAN enters a sparse area with a single bed. QUI-GON hasset up a tea set in the middle of the room. He is a rotundolder jedi with gray hair, but carries an air of authority.He is seated on the floor in front of the tea set, in aposition of meditation.

OBI-WANMaster QUI-GON, I have just comefrom Queen Amidala. She wishes toextend her thanks to you for myservices.

QUI-GONIndeed. How would you grade yourperformance of these services?

OBIWell, the ship is in one piece.Only one direct hit out ofthousands.

QUI-GONHmph. Paduan, can you tell me whatis in front of me.

OBI-WANIts your tea set.

QUI-GONWhat can you tell me about my teaset?

OBI-WAN looks and becomes crestfallen realizing what hashappened.

OBI-WANIts missing a cup.

QUI-GONWhere is the cup?

OBI-WAN leans down, looks under the bed, and becomesresigned when he finds it between a traveling trunk and thebed. He reaches to retrieve it, and stands up.

OBI-WAN hands the cup to QUI-GON, who appraises it as hespeaks. OBI-WAN stands defeated.

QUI-GON

You see yourself as the hero. Atrue Jedi does not let this happen.You are not the focus of the force,you are only an ally of it. I amreminded of a saying of the JediFarramus, who said that the forcewas an ocean. You can use it justto keep yourself afloat, but it isa terrible waste of water. On yourhands, OBI-WAN.

OBI-WAN balances in a hand stand with a practiced move. Oncehe is set, he removes his right hand.

QUI-GONYour mind is full of falsedivisions. You are an ally of theforce. One finger only.

OBI-WAN pushes himself up so he is balancing only on onefinger.

QUI-GONThat means you are an ally of theentire force. You are an ally ofthe force that is in this tea set.

QUI-GON holds a cup in front of OBI-WANs face.

QUI-GONHold this here.

QUI-GON lets go, and OBI-WAN suspends it in midair with hismind. He continues to place pieces of the set in differentpositions around OBI-WAN as he speaks.

QUI-GONYou will meditate on this as you

hold this entire tea set at once.You will either appreciate theoneness of the force, or you willbreak the tea set.

QUI-GON finishes putting the pieces in place. They are nowall suspended in midair around OBI-WAN. OBI-WAN is obviouslystraining to keep everything in place. There is a knock atthe door. QUI-GON answers. CAPTAIN PANAKA is at the door.

QUI-GONIll come up. My apprentice isindisposed.


RIC OLIE, CAPTAIN PANAKA, and QUI-GON JINN are in thecockpit. RIC OLIE is in the pilots chair, and QUI-GONN andPANAKA are looking over his shoulder.

RICIts not a fast leak, but itsenough that we cant make it toCoruscant. Its must have happenedwhen they hit us before we went

into hyperdrive.

QUI-GONI see. I have already explained mydisappointment to my Paduan forthis, theres no sense in punishinghim any further.

RIC and PANAKA look at each other.

QUI-GONWe should stop now. We can stillfind a backwater planet to hide onout here.

CAPTAIN PANAKAThe queen isnt accustomed tohiding on backwater planets. Anyreason we cant stay somewhere morecivilized?

QUI-GONThe Federation will find usimmediately. They have a spynetwork that rivals the Republics.

There.(points to screen)Tatooine. A perfect place to hide aqueen.

CAPTAIN PANAKAIts controlled by the Hutts!Theyll sell us to the highestbidder.

INT. WATTOS JUNK SHOP - DAY

WATTO, a little blue alien, and ANAKIN, a human boy, areleaning over the guts of a large engine. WATTO extends hishand to ANAKIN

WATTOHand me the calamaric wrench.

ANAKINThats not what you need.

WATTOWhat do you mean thats not what Ineed?

ANAKINThe intake is fine, you need toclear these fuel lines.

WATTOOh Im sorry. I didnt realize thatI was in the presence of a masterengineer.

ANAKINIm just trying to tell you whatswrong.

WATTOOh thank you. Youre providing suchan important service. Can you tellme what name is on the front ofthis shop?

WATTO looks at ANAKIN and senses that he has gone a littletoo far.

WATTOIll get the wrench myself.

WATTO moves into the back of the shop. While he is gone,ANAKIN kneels and cleans the fuel lines anyway, pulling outa lot of gunk with a pipe cleaner. He then looks around theshop, and finds a small item of interest. WATTO returns. Hekneels, and uses his tool on the intake. He checks it.

WATTOAh, maybe a little too tight, huh?

He adjusts it again, back to the precise same position.

WATTOJust right! Lets test it!

WATTO flips a control and the engine roars into life. ANAKINcovers his ears. WATTO quickly turns the engine off again.

WATTOYou see? No problem. Just a smalladjustment to the intake.

ANAKINYeah. Hey Watto, can I have this?

ANAKIN indicates the small item he had taken before.

WATTOBah. Take it. Its too small to beuseful.

ANAKINOkay. Im going to go home to sayhi to my mom.

WATTOOk Ani. Make sure shes working onthat grain!

EXT. MOS ESPA - DAY

ANAKIN is walking with a bag over his shoulder through dustyMos Espa. He crosse a street populated by lazy cart driversand street vendors. He climbs several sets of stairs up awall, walks along a wide ledge, and climbs a ladder to thedoor of his house. He enters.

INT. ANAKAINS HOUSE - DAY

SCHMEE V.O.Hello! ANAKIN is that you?

ANAKIN

Hi Mom.

He walks into the kitchen where his mother is putting a lotof elbow grease into grinding some grains with a bowl andpestle. He walks into his room off camera and returns with abulky machine about the size of a coffee maker. He puts iton the counter next to a pile of grains that Schmee isworking through.

SCHMEEIs that your secret project?

ANAKIN

Yep!

He takes an item of the bag, and using some tools, gentlyconnects it to the innards of the machine. He then takessome grain and drops it in the top.

SCHMEEWait! Youre going to ruin it!

ANAKIN ignores her and presses a button. The machine startswhirring and vibrating.

SCHMEE

Its a lovely thought ANAKIN, butthis is never going to work.

ANAKIN takes a bowl and sets it under the machine.

ANAKINFirst the chaff.

The machine whirrs, and ejects half a bowls worth of hardgrain casings. ANAKIN dumps it in the wastebin, and sets thebowl under the machine again.

ANAKINThen we switch this.

ANAKIN flips a lever and processed grain comes out of thespout. His mother is incredibly impressed, and sinks a handinto it to see if its any good. She smiles.

ANAKINYoure welcome.

SCHMEEAni, Ive been meaning to talk toyou.

SCHMEE sits ANAKIN down in a chair at the table and looksinto his eyes.

SCHMEEYou have so much potential. It issuch a crime that you are lockedaway here fixing things in Wattosshop, and building appliances foryour mother.

ANAKINIts not so bad.

SCHMEEI know its not so bad. It isntall that great either. I just wantyou to know that I think you aregoing to do something more.

ANAKINBut Mom, were slaves. We canthave hopes like that.

SCHMEECome here.

SCHMEE hugs ANAKIN.

SCHMEEI dont know how, and I dont knowwhy, but soemthing is going to comeand save us. I just know it.


OBI-WAN is straining and sweating, and the pieces of the teaset are wavering in their positions. One begins to droop andhe focuses on it, trying to lift it back up. Suddenly theentire cabin is shaken when the ship exits hyperspace.OBI-WAN gets knocked off balance. The entire tea set comesdown with him and almost smashes against the floor. OBI-WANcatches himself and is leaning with one finger on the floor,

and one toe on the wall. He looks at the tea set which isall at an angle with him. He seems to realize something, andrelaxes a bit. The tea set stops wavering. He pushes himselfgently back to upright with his toe, and resumes theexercise with newfound confidence. QUI-GON enters, andobserving his progress, nods with approval.

QUI-GONPerhaps theres still hope for you.Although at this rate, I doubt Illlive long enough to see you makeknight.

QUI-GON begins removing pieces from around OBI-WAN andplacing them back on his tray. OBI-WAN relaxes and startsusing both hands.

OBI-WANYouve said that before. I am

suited to become a knight. I amready for the tests. What isholding me back? What training orknowledge do I lack?

QUI-GONBeing ready for the tests and beingsuited for knighthood are twodifferent things. Your confidencecomes from the vision you had ofyourself as a Jedi Knight.

OBI-WAN

I know that not many Paduans havepassed the tests in recent years. Ialso know that you took me asPaduan against your will, becauseyou thought me a poor candidate-

QUI-GON(Sternly)

You are speaking out of turn. Youknow nothing. Clean the tea set andput it away. Youre needed forrepairs on the ship.

EXT. NABOO CRUISER - ROOF

QUI-GON, PANAKA, JAR JAR BINKS, OBI-WAN, and R2-D2 are onthe roof of the shiny Naboo Cruiser, in the middle of aTatooine desert. Gray mats are spread across the top wherethey are standing. OBI-WAN and R2-D2 are huddled over ascorched hole int eh wing. QUI-GON, JAR JAR, and PANAKA

stand a ways off watching OBI-WAN. JAR JAR has a parasol toprotect his skin from the rays of the sun, and a cool drinkof water which he laps up with his tongue. The three viewersare staring intently on OBI-WAN. OBI-WAN is sweatingprofusely as he works in the desert sun.

OBI-WAN(quietly)As if I didnt have enough pressurealready.

(normally, to R2-D2)Finish all that you can, but pullout the rest.

OBI-WAN gets up and joins the group in the middle of theroof of the ship.

OBI-WANThe leak is repaired, but one of

the jump stabilizers is fried. Weneed a replacement.

CAPTAIN PANAKAWe brought enough money to buyparts like that.

OBI-WANTheres another problem. Jumpstabilizers are registered parts.Unless we want to broadcast that weare buying replacement parts fortheis exact type of ship, we need

to get them on the black market.

QUI-GONTheres a reason I brought us here,and its not the accomodations.

INT. NABOO CRUISER - PASSAGEWAY

OBI-WAN has a bag over his shoulder and is prepping for hisjourney for MOS ESPA. PANAKA approaches him.

CAPTAIN PANAKADo you think youll need atranslator?

OBI-WANProbably.

CAPTAIN PANAKATake this one, its been sittinghere powered off for months.

PANAKA opens a nearby closet to reveal THREEPIO, wrapped ina protective cover.

OBI-WANGold? A bit austentatious isnt it?

CAPTAIN PANAKAIt was a royal gift to the queen.When she discovered it was arefurbished load lift programmer,she stuck it in here, and neverlooked at it again.

CAPTAIN PANAKA flicks a switch at THREEPIOs neck and hiseyes light up.

THREEPIOHello, I am C3PO, human cyborgrelations. I am absolutelydelighted to be at the service ofthe queen.

CAPTAIN PANAKAThank you, C3PO. Your firstassignment will be to follow thisapprentice Jedi into the town ofMos Espa, and help him acquireparts for the ship.

THREEPIOP-p-parts for the ship? Mos Espa?On Tatooine? My programming is inetiquette and protocol. Im afraidI wont be of much assistance. Itwould be better if I stayed on theship.

OBI-WANI might need a translator. noarguing, lets go.

EXT. NABOO CRUISER - UNDERNEATH

OBI-WAN and THREEPIO walk down the ramp and start crossingthe wastes that surround Mos Espa. THREEPIO looks around atall the sand.

OBI-WAN and THREEPIO walk into the street, and into WATTOsshop


OBI-WAN and THREEPIO enter the shop. WATTO climbs a ladderbehind his counter until he is at eye level with THREEPIOand OBI-WAN

WATTOHi Chuba da naga?

THREEPIOHa cho ni na? C3PO human nadadacyborg. En annowat hanno JediOBI-WAN KENOBI. Chi naga jumpstabilizers par cruiser de Naboo.

WATTOHee chimi da.

THREEPIOHe says he has the parts.

OBI-WANNow put this delicately. We dontwant to scare him off. We need toknow if its possible to get partsthat arent traced.

WATTOJust ask me about unregisteredparts. I hate protocol droids.

THREEPIOMy word!

OBI-WANWe need jump stabilizers for aT-400 Nabooan, but we cant get itthrough the replacement manifest.We dont want to announce ourpresence.

Schmee nods graciously as she is doing her chores.

OBI-WANIll go and tell ANAKIN you arehere?

OBI-WAN leaves. QUI-GON begins heading to the patio.

We follow OBI-WAN and ANAKIN into ANAKINs house. OBI-WANgoes directly to the patio and QUI-GON. ANAKIN pauses towatch PADME whos is standing awkwardly with the large bowlof grain.

QUI-GONThe test you are about to take isvery old. It goes back to the firstdays of the Jedi Order. It is said

that this is how the first Jediunderstood that he could use theforce. Are you ready?

ANAKIN closes his eyes. QUI-GON gently lifts a shallow bowlof water he had been hiding, and places it on the tablewithout a sound.

QUI-GONImagine a solid circle.

QUI-GON pulls out a small wooden disc. He places the disc inthe bowl, so it is floating. It is painted half red and halfblue.

QUI-GONDo you have the circle in yourmind?

(ANAKIN nods slightly)Good, imagine the circle is dividedin two. One half is red and onehalf is blue.

The red and blue disc seems to grow unnaturally still, andmoves to the center of the bowl, as if by magic.

QUI-GONHold it in your mind, and keep itsteady. Now imagine the circlerotating. The red and blue halvesare chasing after each other. Keepthe shape of it strong in yourthoughts.

The disc begins to rotate slowly at first, but then issteadily spinning in place. OBI-WAN smiles at QUI-GON, but

the older jedi ignores him.

QUI-GONVery carefully, spin it faster.

The disc spins more quickly now, with purpose. OBI-WAN seemsunsure now. QUI-GON has moved into unfamiliar territory.

QUI-GONFaster.

(beat)Faster, ANAKIN.

OBI-WAN is almost concerned at this point, all the water inthe bowl is now spinning with the disc. OBI-WAN pulls outsome coins from the local currency. They are all rotatingslowly in the palm of his hand.

QUI-GONGood. Gently, relax your mind. Letthe circle come to a rest.

OBI-WAN smiles briefly, but realizes what QUI-GON isimplying.

OBI-WANOh.

INT. BANCHA ARENA - ARENA FLOOR

OBI-WAN is dressed in training clothes, and sweating. Thearena floor is gravelly, and the walls are made of largeblocks. Offscreen we hear the BANCHA calling out. We see themassive fist of the BANCHA slam down into frame just asOBI-WAN jumps out of its way. OBI-WAN rushes around thearena, while the BANCHA follows.

INT. BANCHA ARENA - VIEWING AREA

QUI-GON, ANAKIN, PADME, and C3PO stand at the edge of thepit where the action is taking place.

C3POWhat brutality! This cant possiblybe a civilized sport.

PADME(breathlessly)

It looks like OBI-WAN is holdinghis own.

ANAKIN looks at the way PADME is looking at OBI-WAN.

The BANCHA pounds the ground again, trying to crush OBI-WAN,and OBI-WAN scrambles up the wall to where QUI-GON, ANAKIN,PADME, and C3PO are standing in his corner. He is hangingfrom the ledge when ANAKIN suggests something.

ANAKINUse a mind trick, that could work.

OBI-WAN drops down and looks the BANCHA in the eye.

OBI-WANSmash your head into the ground.

The BANCHA rears up, and come smashing its head down atOBI-WAN. He jumps out of the way.

OBI-WAN

Ok, not that!


WATTO sees this, and moves over to QUI-GON.

WATTOHey, no tricks. Like we said. If hedoes that again, the bet is off.

QUI-GON looks down to the floor of the arena.

QUI-GONOBI-WAN, no mind tricks.

The head of the BANCHA comes smashing down again.

OBI-WANNo mind tricks, got it!


The BANCHA throws boulders, and OBI-WAN dodges them. TheBANCHA charges at OBI-WAN. The BANCHA charges at OBI-WAN. Itsmashes the wall with its head as OBI-WAN jumps up, andgrabs a ring that a chain is attached to. The BANCHA rearsup and smashes its fists against the ring, as OBI-WAN dropsagain out of the way. The ring cracks and the chains swingfreely. OBI-WAN races after it, and climbs up the chain tothe other ring. The BANCHA rears up once again and smashesthe second ring, releasing the chain. Obi drops, drags thechain along with him, waiting for an opening. After several

charges and dodges, OBI-WAN climbs up the wall again toQUI-GON and company.

QUI-GONWrap this up. Youve wasted enoughtime already.

OBI-WAN looks down as the BANCHA scrambles beneath him. Headjusts the chain on his shoulder, and lets himself dropdown on top of the BANCHA. The chain gets looped around theBANCHAs neck, and OBI-WAN is laying on the BANCHAs back,holding each end of the chain. The BANCHA begins twistingand shaking, sliding OBI-WAN back and forth. OBI-WANsteadies himself with a foot on the BANCHAs shoulder. Hethen gains a stance, and begins choking the creature witheach end of the chain. The BANCHA begins bucking violently.OBI-WAN fights against the struggles of the BANCHA. As alast desperate move, the BANCHA slams itself into a wall,pitching OBI-WAN forward. Obi wan steps one foot on the back

of the BANCHAs head, and doesnt break the tension in thechain. The BANCHA finally succumbs, and collapses.


The crowd goes wild. OBI-WAN scales the wall, and QUI-GONoffers his hand to help him up. OBI-WAN smiles and takes it.QUI-GON grunts a little lifting him up. QUI-GON pats him onthe back.

QUI-GONThat wasnt so bad, was it?

Obi wan shakes his head. Padme watches him. Sweat drips offhis face. Padme offers him a towel.

PADMEHere.

Obi wan takes it. ANAKIN sees at how Padme is looking atOBI-WAN.

ANAKINDid you know that I pod race?

PADME(absentmindedly)

QUI-GON watches as Watto begins arguing with an official.

QUI-GON and OBI-WAN simultaneously reel slightly. They turntheir heads to the cruiser.

OBI-WANMaster QUI-GON do you-

QUI-GONYes. We must hurry.

QUI-GONIm not sure. We have to get to theship, now.

ANAKINI have an old hauler we can use.


The rickety old hauler rolls up to the ship with ANAKIN atthe wheel, QUI-GON in the passenger side, and the otherthree in the hauler bed. The cruisers main ramp is down.OBI-WAN jumps down and inspects a small panel with wireshanging loosely out of it.

OBI-WANThe door lock has been tamperedwith.

QUI-GONANAKIN, come with me.


QUI-GON is lifting ANAKIN onto the roof of the Cruiser.

QUI-GONStay up there until we say itsokay to come down. While yourewaiting see if you can fix thestabilizer.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, ANAKIN nods.


QUI-GON returns to the ramp where OBI-WAN is waiting forhim. OBI-WAN is standing between Padme and the ramp. Padmelooks intently at QUI-GON.

QUI-GONIll go first.

QUI-GON holds, but does not draw, his light saber. He stepsslowly but confidently up the ramp.


The passageway is littered with dead Naboo Guardsmen. PADMEsees CAPTAIN PANAKA and holds her hand to her mouth. Theywalk back to the royal apartments. JAR JAR BINKS is on theground, moaning. QUI-GON kneels beside him. He puts his handon JAR JARs forehead for a moment, and JAR JARs eyes

flitter open. JAR JAR sits up with wide eyes looking at thegroup. He then cradles his head in pain, moaning.

QUI-GONWhat happened here JAR JAR?

JAR JAR

A demon attacked the ship. It wasthe Gungan fire demon. His face waspainted and his eyes were burning.

JAR JAR puts his face into his hands in anguish.

QUI-GONOBI-WAN, help JAR JAR to his feet.

QUI-GON and PADME approach the royal apartments. The door isclosed and does not open. QUI-GON tries the controls, butthe door has been sealed. He finally draws his light saber,and cuts the door open from top to bottom along one side.

The door opens.


Inside the royal apartments are the five handmaidens,sitting on the floor. The are all looking at the door withsolemn faces. Padme walks in first.

PADMEWheres the queen?

HANDMAIDENHe took her.

QUI-GONOne man did all this?

HANDMAIDENYes.

PADMEDid you try to stop him?

HANDMAIDEN

Yes, but he took our weapons fromus. He could use the force like aJedi. She said she would go quietlyif he promised not harm us.

PADME(closes her eyes)

OBI-WAN is still dressed from his earlier fight in thearena. He retrieves his light saber, and begins examiningit.

Padme is in a pilots seat. She is working on a console in

The cruiser wobbly lifts off the ground.


The men steady themselves as the cockpit moves about. Theyall look at each other.

He jumps into the other unoccupied pilots chair. He grabsthe controls, the cruiser quickly levels off. Padme looksaround.

The cruisers swoops up, and shoots off over the terrain.


They travel following the signal on the map. They close in.

ANAKIN lowers the ship to the surface.


The ramp of the ship lowers, and OBI-WAN, and QUI-GONquickly step down it. They step in front, and wave the shipaway. The ship takes off.

EXT. QUARRY EDGE - AFTERNOON

The Jedi are standing at the cliff of a huge quarry in theshape of a hemisphere. The walls and floor are black andgray rock. They look in, and there are entrances to themines dotting the bottom level.

QUI-GONIve foreseen this.

OBI-WANThe mine?

QUI-GONEverything. The boy, the queen whois not a queen, the mine, and adark assassin who awaits within.

QUI-GON and OBI-WAN make it to the center of the quarryfloor. QUI-GON looks around.

(points to a mineshaftopening)

The assassin is in there.

(points in the oppositedirection)

INT. MINESHAFT TO QUEEN AMIDALA

A pale luminescence gives the mineshaft an otherworldly

glow. OBI-WAN jogs, keeping his eyes open. At a junction, heslows, and waits for his feelings to tell him which route totake. Once his instincts tell him where to go, he beginsrunning again.

INT. MINESHAFT TO DARTH MAUL

QUI-GON is walking deliberately. The mineshaft is darker,but still allows him some visible light. He moves into alarger chamber, and descends stairs to the floor of it.Sensing that the enemy is near, he draws his light saber.The glow illuminates the immediate surroundings. QUI-GONslowly paces around the floor of the chamber.

QUI-GONI know youre there. Youre good,but not that good.

QUI-GON continues pacing around the floor. Darth Maulfinally draws his light saber. QUI-GON turns to face him.Darth Maul is stepping quickly around his perimeter. QUI-GONmoves more slowly, but keeps a strong stance. Darth Maulstrikes quickly, and QUI-GON effectively handles the blows.

DARTH MAULYou should have brought yourapprentice. You are too old and toofat.

QUI-GONI have a few tricks up my sleevethat not even you could know. Theforce is my ally.

Darth Maul rushes QUI-GON with a flurry of strikes. QUI-GONbacks up against the stairway. Darth Maul finishes with aparticularly powerful blow, which QUI-GON barely manages to

push back. Darth Maul pauses for a moment.

DARTH MAULThe force is my slave.

Darth Maul rushes again, but this time QUI-GON flicks hiswrist and uses the force to throw some loose rocks at hisface. Darth Maul reels momentarily. QUI-GON ascends thestairway and at the top, near the entrance to the chamber,waits for Darth Maul. Darth Maul smiles and deftly leapsinto the air, easily jumping well higher than QUI-GON at thetop of the stairs. As he comes down he strikes at QUI-GON,sending him reeling back again down the mineshaft.

INT. MINESHAFT TO QUEEN AMIDALA

OBI-WAN is still running, and finally reaches the chamberwhere Queen Amidala is. He runs up to the tied up figure.

QUEEN AMIDALAOh thank you, a thousand royalthank yous.

OBI-WAN quickly frees the Queen and helps her stand up.

OBI-WANCan you run?

QUEEN AMIDALAIm barefoot.

QUI-GON is defending, but still getting pushed back by DarthMaul.

OBI-WAN emerges from the mineshaft, and quickly ascends thestaircase up the side of the quarry.

EXT. QUARRY EDGE - DUSK

When OBI-WAN reaches the top, he sets the Queen down next to

him, and communicates with the ship.

OBI-WANANAKIN, come around.

The ship comes out from behind a hill, and swings toward thequeen and OBI-WAN.


QUI-GON backs out of the mineshaft entrance, defendingagainst swings from Darth Maul, who follows. At the entranceMaul hesitates, but soon follows stepping into the fadinglight. They make their way to the center of the quarry.Darth Maul sees the ship above the cliff. He draws a secondweapon, a handheld grenade launcher, and fires at the ship.

ANAKIN sees the shot, and steers the ship out of the way.

EXT. NABOO CRUISER

The ship veers, and barely evades the shot. OBI-WAN and theQueen are thrown about, as they try to ascend the ramp ofthe ship.


Darth Maul is distracted by his unexpected miss. He looks inthe cockpit, and can see ANAKIN piloting the ship. He takesmore careful aim, but this time QUI-GON strikes first, andcuts the weapon in half. Darth Maul becomes enraged by this.He begins to beat at QUI-GON furiously, and finally knocks

away QUI-GONs light saber.

EXT. NABOO CRUISER - RAMP

OBI-WAN is standing on the ramp of the floating Naboocruiser watching the action. His eyes go wide as QUI-GONfalls back.


Darth Maul strides up to QUI-GON. He points his light saber

at QUI-GONs throat.

QUI-GONDo it, and I will show yousomething you will nevercomprehend.

Darth Maul sneers, and swings for QUI-GONs neck. As thelight saber passes through, QUI-GON vanishes, leaving hisclothes behind. Darth Maul looks with confusion for amoment, but collects himself, and runs to QUI-GONs droppedlight saber. He deftly picks it up, draws it, and hurls itat the ship, swinging end over end.


OBI-WAN is distraught, but lifts his hand and uses the forceto push back on the light saber.

Darth Maul lifts his hand and pushes back.


Padme, who is kneeling at the top of the ramp, sees this.

PADMEANAKIN, go! We have to go now!

OBI-WAN is struggling, and pushing back. He is about to beovercome when he seems to realize something. He changes hishand slightly, and the light saber closes. The light saberthen flies into his hand as the ramp closes.


Darth Maul watches as the Naboo Cruiser shoots off into thesky.


Later, OBI-WAN is sitting on the floor of the passagewaystaring at the wall. Padme approaches with a glass of water.OBI-WAN takes it, and Padme sits on the floor across fromhim. SABE, who was dressed as Queen Amidala, approaches. Sheis in handmaidens clothing, but not out of the makeup yet.

SABEYour majesty, now that they knowyou are the queen, maybe we should-

PADMENo. I am consoling a friend. Leaveus.

Padme waits as Sabe exits. She turns back to OBI-WAN.

PADMEHe was very wise.

OBI-WAN(smiling)

He was a stern master. Hisexercises were legendary.

ANAKIN comes back from the cockpit.

OBI-WAN stands in the center of the room, with the masterswho form the Jedi council sitting in backless thrones aroundthe room. OBI-WAN has just finished speaking, and the roomis silent. KI-ADI-MUNDI, the head of the council, is lookingat OBI-WAN intently.

KI-ADI-MUNDIIf what you say is true, it is avery serious matter.

SAESEE TIINAn assassin who can use the forceand disintegrate a jedi? Itsunbelievable.

We see YODA, who is very young looking. His skin is muchgreener, and his body, while small, is athletic looking.This is all despite being centuries years old.

QUEEN AMIDALAOur course of action requires us tosecure the throne room, and disablethe communications jam.

SABECurrently there are three shipsestablishing a jam. They will allneed to be disabled in order totransmit securely.

OBI-WANThats a tough order.

QUEEN AMIDALAWe are in luck, the palace is inthe center of what used to be amilitary base. The throne room isonly a short distance from an ioncannon.

SABEOur intelligence tells us thecannon is intact but partially

disassembled. We will need to breakin, repair it, and use it todisable the ships.

OBI-WANWere going to have troubledisabling all three ships. We canstay undetected until we fire thefirst shot, but once that happens,the entire occupation force willcome down on us. We need somethingto keep them occupied once we startfiring.

The throne room is dark and vacant. Obi Wan carefully entersfrom a side doorway. He is followed by ANAKIN, R2D2, theQueen, and a handmaiden. They move to a second side doorwaywhich the handmaiden carefully opens.

QUEEN AMIDALA

Good luck.

OBI-WAN, ANAKIN, and R2D2 move swiftly through the openeddoor.

INT. NABOO PALACE HALLWAY

OBI-WAN, ANAKIN, and R2D2 run down the hallway to thecorner. OBI-WAN checks around the corner, but hears a droidpatrol. He motions everyone against the corner, and thedroids pass by. Once the droids are out of hearing rangethey start running again. They draw closer to theirdestination, but hear another patrol coming down a Tintersection in the hallway. Again OBI-WAN motions the allagainst a nook in the wall.

OBI-WAN(whispers)

Stay perfectly still.

He lifts his hand out, and with a throwing motion, pointsin the opposite direction down the hallway.

DROID 1(offscreen)

Did you hear that?

DROID 2Sounded like footsteps.

DROID 1Stand guard here while Iinvestigate.

The first droid follows the sounds it heard down the hallwayopposite the heroes. The second droid sets up watch facingdown the intersection, away from the the other two hallways.OBI-WAN and ANAKIN look around for options on where to go,but R2D2 preempts them and rolls up to the droid. ANAKIN and

OBI-WAN silently scream and reach out, but it is too late,the R2D2 has approached the droid. OBI-WAN holds his lightsaber in his hand, ready for battle. R2D2 rolls up behindthe droid, and sticks a small pin into its side. The droidstarts, the begins vibrating slightly. R2D2 pulls away. Thedroid turns around with its weapon in hand. OBI-WAN drawshis light saber. The droid walks straight up to a large doorat the intersection, and opens it with a special key. Thedroid then resumes its post. With amazement on their faces,the heroes enter and close the doorway behind them. Thefirst droid returns.

DROID 1

There was nothing. Did you seeanything?

DROID 2All clear.

DROID 1Roger Roger.

The droids continue their patrol.

INT. NABOO ION CANNON CONTROL - HALLWAY

The heroes seal the doors. They run down a less patroledhallway, nearing their goal.

INT. NABOO ION CANNON CONTROL - MAIN CHAMBER

They enter the main control chamber, and everything seems tobe in pieces. Again they seal the doorway once they enter.

OBI-WAN

ANAKIN, where do we start.

Anakin surveys the scene quickly.

ANAKINTheres no real damage, just a lotof yanked wires. We get power goingfirst, then hook up targetingcontrol, and finally the solutionscomputer.

Behind them, Darth Maul drops from the ceiling. OBI-WANturns and draws his light saber.

ANAKIN(continued)

Shouldnt be too long with the bothof us.

OBI-WANYoure going to have to handle ityourself. I have another task totake care of.

ANAKIN(looks around, panics)

OBI-WAN-

OBI-WANIll take care of him. Just get thecannon working.

The apprentices approach each other, light sabers drawn.ANAKIN works nervously in the background. Darth Maul strikesfirst with several strong blows. OBI-WAN counter attacks,and manages to make Darth Maul take a step back. Darth Maulcomes at him with a furious set of blows. OBI-WAN dodges andmaneuvers easily, but on one of the last attacks, Darth Maulmanages to graze his shirt, and the light saber singes it,burning at the edge of the hole. Darth Maul actually relentsfor a moment, and OBI-WAN takes a second to pat out thefire. When he is satisfied, he readies himself. Darth Maulimmediately strikes. Over by the controls, ANAKIN has a leadcoming out of the top of R2D2.

ANAKINHow about now?

Artoo beeps, and ANAKIN looks back into the hole in the wallwhere the wires originate.

ANAKINNow?

Artoo beeps, ANAKIN looks again.

ANAKINOk, what about this one?

Artoo chirps excitedly and we hear the din of a generatorstarting up.

ANAKINOk, we got power.


DAULTRAY and another federation officer are standing aboardthe bridge of the ship.

DAULTRAYOnly an hour left until we arerecognized as the permanentgovernors of Naboo.

OFFICER

The invasion force is reportingsomething. The ion cannonsgenerators have come online!

DAULTRAYWhat? How? Shut them down! Shutthem down!


ANAKIN pulls out a wire with an odd device attached. Helooks at it quizzically, pulls it off and throws it away.


OFFICERWe just lost remote access. Theymust be at the controls!

DAULTRAYSend a company there immediately!And search the rest of the palace!


Darth Maul charges at OBI-WAN with tight feints. OBI-WANparries each one. Finally he jumps right onto a catwalkdirectly above him. Darth Maul jumps from the floor up tothe catwalk, but while he is in mid air, OBI-WAN slices thecatwalk away underneath him. Darth Maul lands, but quicklyloses his footing, and the catwalk floor falls to theground. The catwalk lands with a crash. ANAKIN gets aconcerned look on his face, and tries his best to ignore theaction.

INT. NABOO PALACE HALLWAY

Droids are jogging to the doorway to the ion cannon control.

DROID OFFICERContinue the search. Check thethrone room.

Droids continue to the throne room. Other Droids try thedoor.

DROID PRIVATEIts sealed sir.

DROID OFFICERBlast it.

The DROID private shoots the door, but the shot bounces backand hits the officer. The DROID private looks at theofficer.

DROID PRIVATEOfficer down. Following lastorders, "blast it".

The DROID Continues firing, and bouncing shots of the door,and hitting other DROID soldiers.

INT. NABOO PALACE HALLWAY - THRONE ROOM DOOR

Droids are gathering in front of the door to the throneroom. Daultray is speaking with the officer.

DAULTRAYIf the queen is with them, captureher. Eliminate everyone else.

DROID OFFICERRoger Roger.

(to the DROID private)

Ready Weapons. Open the door.

The DROID opens the door into a fully lit Throne room. Asthey walk in, the handmaidens, all formally dressed as QueenAmidala, open fire. A DROID private points to one, thenanother, then another.

DROID PRIVATEWhich ones the queen?

A shot knocks the DROID down. From the back of the roomTHREEPIO emerges with a freshly brewed set of tea.

THREEPIOYour highness, here is some lovelytea to calm your nerves.
