Work hand in hand with coffee producers to ensure a continued supply of sustainably produced high quality coffee;

Promote social responsibility and the protection of the environment along the coffee supply chain; and

Improve the lives of farmers and their communities by helping them become self-sustaining.

Farmers supported by FSCs in Africa

Ethiopia: 27,600 smallholder farmers, medium and large plantations. Burundi: 7,000 smallholder farmers, wet & dry mills Rwanda: 30,000 smallholder farmers, wet & dry mills Kenya: 19,300 smallholder farmers and estates, wet & dry mills Tanzania: 16,300 smallholder farmers and estates, wet and dry mills

Agronomy

Best Agronomy Practices are key to improving yields and reducing costs

Farmers trained in critical environmental practices Erosion control Shade and soil management Pulp composting /mitigation of odors from pulp waste by using lime and red worms Safe storage and appropriate use of chemicals

Quality

Evaluate coffee and support supply chains in an effort to identify problems in processing and to improve cup profiles.

Producer trainings relating production processes to cup quality . Strengthening the knowledge and awareness of consumer quality

needs.

Farmers are educated in ripe cherry harvesting to improve cup quality – although a simple concept, it can be challenging at field level.

Quality control processes are intensified from reception of cherry to storage.

Formal and on-site trainings target both farmers and wet mill personnel simultaneously to focus on quality.

WASH Project-Tanzania

Limited access to clean water and safe sanitation in low-income households is a critical factor in Tanzania’s struggle with waterborne diseases. The collaboration between the Starbucks Foundation and PATH focuses on improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems in southwest Tanzania’s Mbeya District.

We have a responsibility to make our communities stronger – using the scale of our business for positive change. New Health Center supported and partly constructed by Starbucks Partners in Partnership with Rwacof & Kahawatu

Community involvement

Cow Program - Rwanda Starbucks Partners donated 57 cows to Dukendekawa Cooperative with Heifer International Project as implementing partners. Since its inception, the number of cows has grown to more than 150.

affordable school fees and medical insurance. Bio-gas for cooking and lighting
