SOCCER STARS KICK OFF CLOSING TOURNAMENT

26

News..............................

The highly successful Silverstar Casino’s Soccer Stars initiative hosted its season closing tournament at Lusaka Sports

Complex in Johannesburg on the West Rand on Saturday, 18 June 2011 for the 54 school teams from the Kagiso, Munsieville and Swaneville areas.

The initiative, which is now in its second year, is fast gaining momentum. “The community knows we are committed to the development of soccer and this isn’t a once-off project for us. We are here to stay” said: Johannes Radebe, Human Recourses Manager and Head of Corporate Social Investment (CSI) at Silverstar Casino.

Silverstar Casino, which has partnered with the local and provincial Departments of Education (Gauteng West District) and the Dreamfields Project, is committed to investing in its surrounding communities. “We’ve established partnerships with local and provincial government and the community and are encouraging active participation with stakeholders. It’s a combined effort and together we can create brighter futures for these children,” Radebe continued.

This is an aspirational initiative that is keeping kids off the street by occupying them with a positive activity for a few days a week and giving them a purpose. We are inspired to see how dedicated these kids are and how they love being part of this programme.” said: Mike Vermaak, General Manager of Silverstar Casino.

The tournament was the culmination of the Silverstar Soccer Stars league matches, played every Wednesday since the opening tournament that was held on Saturday, 12 March 2011.

Children from the 11 to 16-year-old age groups participated. The primary school segment comprises 22 under-12 participating school teams, as well as 22 under-14 teams, while the secondary schools boast 10 teams of scholars under the age of 16. This equates to 810 players and almost 100 coaches and team managers. Following on from the success of the programme in its first year and to ensure succession in the player’s development, under-14 teams were introduced this year.

A Silverstar Soccer Stars prize-giving ceremony was held, as well as celebrity soccer players hosting coaching clinics for the school teams between their match games. The celebrity players in attendance included Orlando Pirates’ players Happy Jele, Oupa Manyisa, Senzo Meyiwa, Tlou Segolela and ex-Kaizer Chiefs’ player, Arthur Zwane.

“This tournament is a significant event for our local community. It is our philosophy to involve as many local suppliers and vendors as possible so that these initiatives not only benefit the children, but also provide economic development for the people in the surrounding communities,” explained Radebe.

Page 27: Stargazer Issue 3 2011

News..............................

Now that the tournament is over, the soccer programme does not end. An elite coaching academy will be hosted for the top 30 most talented players in each age group. The Silverstar Player Academy further trains the players with the most potential during the season, in order to hone their skill and natural talent. The players with the most potential will be selected for the Silverstar Soccer Stars team to compete in SAFA league schedules in 2012, with the long-term view that they will be recruited by some of the district’s reputable development clubs.

Selected talented players from the U13 and U17 teams of the 2010 Silverstar Player Academy are now playing in the Rand Central League along with other PSL development teams.  “This is a feather in our cap and was always part of the plan. It motivates the players as there is the chance they will be spotted by a talent scout. By giving them these opportunities and the

possibility of exposure to other great teams, it also broadens their soccer skills and competitive edge,” said: Radebe.

Tumelo Leanya, an U17 player, misbehaved at school, but soccer has changed his life and given him a purpose and a focus. “We want to instil a level of commitment from each player and teach them not only about soccer, but about accountability, responsibility and motivation. Teams have to show us their commitment to the project by attending and participating in all their league matches. We can proudly say they have done so with gusto and great enthusiasm. They are doing us proud,” said: Radebe.
