Reflection on our Gospel Reading

From today’s Colossians reading:

He is the image of the invisible God, The first born of all creation.

Reflection: "Location, location, location" – the gospel shows us that all through his life and right up to his death, Christ has taken a place with the suffering, poor, sick, the defeated and the outcast who cry out to God. Christ is "the image of the invisible God," and has shown that his rule is from our location – from the midst of us. So, we ask ourselves: Where in the midst of the world do you discover Christ? How have you responded to Christ the King in that

place?

2019 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

The Feast of Christ the King – Some Musings

“. . today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

There’s a crucifix hanging over most doors in

my home; a reminder to me of His great sacrifice and love for me and for the entire world. It’s a symbol that He was born, suffered the indignity of death on a cross and that He rose again to open for us the gates of Heaven. It reminds me most times to be humble. If the King of the Universe was willing to suffer and die for me, I need to be sure that I am worthy of that great devotion; still I can find it difficult to reconcile that image of the suffering corpus with the King of the Universe. Most of our kings, queens and rulers certainly wouldn’t be willing to go through that agony for the welfare of their people. Our God is unlike any other of the little gods that can become so important to us. The god of greed and lust, the god of hatred and anger, the god of want, want, want, are so far below our loving Saviour and Brother. Yet it is often at the feet of these gods that we can fall down and worship. And because our image of Jesus is one of brotherly love, we can lose sight of His Kingship. When that happens we can become lazy when we approach Him. We’re told that He’s present in the Bread and Wine, and that should make our approach to Him reverent and focused but we often approach His altar in a lackadaisical manner. When we make the sign of the cross we sometimes wave our hands about as though that sign that should remind us of our baptism as priest, prophet and king means little. Many times, instead of spending time in prayer and reflection we spend time catching up with people we’ve not seen for a bit. Now, I’m not suggesting that we shouldn’t acknowledge and speak with others, ask how they’re doing, but when our whole time before Mass is spent in that fashion, we lose precious time to spend with our God. I think if we really consider Who it is, the One present in our Tabernacle, soon on our altar, we’d be better at praising and worshipping Him. Were I ever invited to an audience with Her Majesty, Elizabeth II, it wouldn’t matter who else was present, I’d focus totally on being present with her; and God is so much more important than she is but I can go into His presence paying little or no attention to the fact that He is there. I look at the crucifix and am overwhelmed by His great love and compassion and still I can enter into prayer with the best of intentions and find myself distracted by the mundane things of this world. I may be praying with devotion and focus for a while but soon that ironing that isn’t done invades my thoughts, dinner plans take precedence over praise. We hear it said that Jesus is God with skin on, that He’s made us His sisters and brothers, it’s not difficult to understand why we can go into His presence not remembering that He’s also the King of the Universe and not just of our universe but of all the universes and galaxies that have come into existence. The other night I stood in my darkened rooms and looked out at the full moon casting dark shadows on the white snow; stars twinkled overhead and all the world was silent and at peace. Welcome to the Sacrament of Baptism – an expression of God’s Love!

Baptism opens the door of faith and community to your child.

As I stood, silent in thought and quiet prayer, seeing the vastness of sky and earth, I thanked Him for His great love and concern for us all. I made my own covenant with Him, vowing to live more as He would have me do, loving Him more deeply and firmly, loving others and abiding by His laws and precepts. As we end this liturgical year and begin a new one with the season of Advent, let’s not let the busy-ness that can be part of this season as we prepare for His coming at Christmas overtake the real meaning of this time. Like Mary, let’s keep these things and ponder them in our hearts. Let’s praise and worship, let’s work toward making this a world that will welcome the anniversary of His first coming and let’s prepare for His glorious coming at the end of time. Wishing you a week of much quiet and many small miracles.

Betty Bruch

Bereavement Support

“Poverty means that you depend on others for survival…. On this particular day we were, again, sitting in a circle, when a woman said: “I cannot love others as I love myself, because I hate myself.” Knowing some of her history I knew how many things had been taken from her. Her trust that life is safe was one of them; that she was lovable was another. After a pause she said, “So I need to start with love of the other to learn how to love myself.” In the circle, she was our teacher who gave us the hard-won wisdom learned through her stolen life; the prophet who dismantled the false idol of “You need no one. Just love yourself.” She was a truth-speaker with dignity that comes with it. She had a role within the circle and as one of the essential links in it, exercised her responsibility. There was no trace of poverty.” (World Day of the Poor; Maris Karajovanova; Novalis; pp. 180-181; 2019) After loss, how do I view myself and what I have to share with and for others? To become a bereavement volunteer or for grief support please call Sr. Teresa at the parish office or via e-mail at [email protected]

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

“THE LIES OF THIS WORLD suck the life out of us by destroying our joy. A powerful case can be made for the Gospel. There is plenty of evidence that the joy we seek can be found by applying the teachings of Jesus to our lives. So, what is it that holds us back from fully embracing the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Our fear and brokenness can be an obstacle. God invites us to a total surrender and we are afraid to let go. The culture and all its distractions can prevent us from seeing the beauty of the life God invites us to live. Self-loathing, unwillingness to forgive ourselves and others, biases and prejudices that have been born from past experiences, complacency toward others in need, selfishness – these are all obstacles in our quest to authentically live the teachings of Jesus.” (Rediscover Jesus; by Matthew Kelly; Beacon Press; page 168) As we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King and as this Church year concludes, have we grown in our personal faith and following of Jesus? For whom and for what am I most grateful? For further information please contact Sister Teresa for at (519) 539-0876 or via e-mail [email protected]

OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP

Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our national loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel

calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise.

Christmas themed night/Outreach Please come festively dressed for this night. We will have our usual gift exchange amongst each other, games and it wouldn’t be a party without food!! As we did last year for the first time, we are reaching out to a family/ families in need, depending on how much is donated, that we can send our love too this Advent season. To do this we need your help! We are asking for the following;

1. Gift cards to grocery stores, Walmart, Shoppers,

restaurants, Timmies etc…(How we can double our donation is if the youth use their own money and then have their parents match their donation. For example if the youth donates a $20 gift card, the family would also donate $20 which will make a total 40 dollar donation. 2. Special festive/seasonal treats such as, boxes of

chocolates, candies etc…. Prayer cards, rosaries or religious items. Please let us know if you can think of a family/families from our parish that is in great need. We will put the gifts together on that night and will get them delivered to the families who are chosen to receive them. We thank you in advance for your generosity and charity.

TO OUR PARISHIONERS: If you would like to help us out with this project you can donate any of the above items on or before our gathering on December 9

A simple and easy way to support your CWL!

To the parents of our young children, may we suggest …

God put the wiggle in children. Don’t feel you have to

suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome.

Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little one to see and hear what’s going on at the altar. They tire of seeing

the back’s of other’s heads.

Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the priests, altar servers, choirs etc.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children

learn liturgical behavior by coping you.

If you have to leave Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus said, “Let the children come

to me.”

Remember that the way we welcome in church directly affects the way we respond to the Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this

house of worship.

To the members of our parish ….

The presence of children is a gift to the Church and they are a reminder

that our parish is growing.

Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to

their parents.

Christmas Concert

Welcome the Christmas season by singing your favorite carols. The 51st Community Christmas Concert will be on Monday December 2, 2019 at the Church of the Epiphany. It is

located on the corner of Dundas and Wellingtons St. Starts at 7:30pm. Free will offering to the Christmas Place (Operation sharing). Hope to see you there!

Holy Rosary ~ We pray the Rosary every Tuesday morning at 11:00 am in Holy Trinity Church.

Please come and join us in this special time of prayer with Mary our Mother. “To pray the rosary is to hand over our burdens to the merciful hearts of Christ and his Mother.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today’s solemnity, the final feast of the Church year, is a youngster as feasts go. In 1925, Pope Pius XI was distressed by global political upheaval and the de-Christianizing of society. That year was a “Holy Year,” keyed to the sixteen hundredth anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, when the words “and of his kingdom there will be no end” were added to the Creed. The Pope explained that although most feasts had developed over many centuries, the Church sometimes provided a new feast to address new needs. He pointed to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, showing Christ’s love and compassion in a time when many people embraced a cold and gloomy spirituality. Originally on the last Sunday of October, in the late 1960s the solemnity of Christ the King was moved to the last Sunday of the year. Fresh from baptism’s waters, we are anointed with chrism “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king.” This feast is a key to our identity. On this feast, we recognize Christ as a king who breaks the usual mold of kingship, and who shapes his kingdom with our hands, our words, our deeds of love and service.

Volunteers Needed at Beginnings Beginnings Care Centre is largely supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who are invaluable to the operation of our care closet and weekly parenting programs. The responsibilities of our volunteers include greeting clients, organizing donations, child care, cleaning, and much more. As our centre is growing, so is our need for volunteers. If you have been looking for a local ministry to volunteer with for a few hours a week or if you would like to learn a bit more about what we do, we would love to speak with you. Please feel free to contact our centre at 519-421-2127 or drop by for a visit Tuesdays & Wednesdays 9:30-4:30 or Thursdays 9:30-3:00. We are located at 28 Wellington Street North in Woodstock.
