Life is in constant evolution.Nothing lasts forever, this is thenature of the phenomenon wecall life. This week former educator/politician, Mr . Eulogio Canotell us that Sacred Heart RomanCatholic High School started 54years ago in a room downstairsthe Stork Club, the busiest andmost popular bar in San IgnacioTown in that era. Today, it is notpermissible to open and operatea bar anywhere near a schoolmuch less a high school wherestudents are more mature. Our gun laws were once slackuntil the senseless spate of gunviolence showed its ugly headespecially on the south sidestreets of the old capital. Thisdevelopment necessitated thepassage of stringent, some mightsay, draconian gun laws. Today, the gun violence has somewhatabated. Some among us are nowcalling for the slacking of the gunlaws. We change with the current

Life Is Dynamictime fit prevailing circumstancesand conditions. Such is life. A new era has dawn in thenation. The push, primarily byBelize City Mayor DarrellBradley, for the concreting ofmunicipal streets is movingacross the country. The asphaltingof streets is becoming obsolete.Belizeans are cementing theiryard at home and/or the parkinglot at their business places.Changes are taking place, oldthings are going, new things andideas are emerging. This is whatlife is all about. The A-track player, the cassetteplayer/recorder, the recordplayer, the film camera and thetypewriter are all relics of an eragone by just as is the living incaves. The more modern CD isfading away. Life is not stagnant.Life is dynamic. This week we heard the leaderof the opposition lamentingabout the closure of businesses, sounding an illogical and

irrational alarm. He speaks as ifthe skies are falling. Hello Mr.Leader of the opposition; this iswhat life is all about, businessesclose, new ones open. Was it not

the legendary Bob Marley whoclassically told us that “Whenone door is closed, don’t youknow (Mr. Leader of theOpposition) another is open”?

A father is a gift from God,Just like you were too.

He is always behind you,No matter what you do.

When he first laid eyes on you,He was bursting with pride.

He didn’t quite know how t hold you,And felt sad when you cried.

He taught you how to ride a bike,And then to drive a car.

His patience and understanding,Is notable by far.

His love is unconditional,To that there is no end.And as you get older,

He becomes more like a friend.

He is always sensitive to your needs,He just has that special touch.

It’ s no wonder then Dad,Why you are loved so much!

Individualswith cerebral malaria frequentlyexhibit neurological symptoms, including abnormal posturing, nystagmus, conjugate gazepalsy (failure of the eyes toturn together in the samedirection) , opisthotonus, seizures, or coma.

COMPLICA TIONS There are several seriouscomplications of malaria. Amongthese is the development ofrespiratory distress, whichoccurs in up to 25% of adults and40% of children with severe P.falciparum malaria. Possiblecauses include respiratorycompensation of metabolicacidosis, noncardiogenicpulmonary oedema, concomitantpneumonia, and severe anaemia.Although rare in youngchildren with severe malaria,

acute respiratory distresssyndrome occurs in 5–25% ofadults and up to 29% of pregnantwomen. Coinfection of HIV withmalaria increases mortality.Renal failure is a feature ofblackwater fever, wherehemoglobin from lysed red bloodcells leaks into the urine. Infection with P. falciparummay result in cerebral malaria,a form of severe malaria thatinvolves encephalopathy. It isassociated with retinal whitening, which may be a useful clinicalsign in distinguishing malariafrom other causes of fever.Splenomegaly, severe headache, hepatomegaly (enlargedliver), hypoglycemia, andhemoglobinuria with renal failuremay occur. Malaria in pregnant women isan important cause of stillbirths, infant mortality and low birthweight, particularly in P.falciparum infection, but alsowith P. vivax.

Malaria Transmission CycleCAUSE

Malaria parasites belong tothe genus Plasmodium (phylumApicomplexa). In humans, malaria is caused by P.falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale,P. vivax and P. knowlesi. Amongthose infected, P. falciparumis the most common speciesidentified (~75%) followedby P. vivax (~20%). AlthoughP. falciparum traditionallyaccounts for the majorityof deaths, recent evidencesuggests that P. vivax malariais associated with potentiallylife-threatening conditions

about as often as with adiagnosis of P. falciparuminfection. P. vivax proportionallyis more common outside ofAfrica. There have beendocumented human infectionswith several species ofPlasmodium from higher apes;however, with the exception ofP. knowlesi—a zoonotic speciesthat causes malaria inmacaques—these are mostlyof limited public healthimportance. Climate change is likely toaffect malaria transmission, butthe severity and geographicdistribution of such effects iscurrently uncertain. World Malaria Day is aneffort by the global malariacommunity to highlight thereported successes and theremaining challenges in malariacontrol today, and to maximizethe impact of substantialinvestments for this preventableand treatable disease. Belize has made significantprogress in the control ofMalaria over the past years, having reduced the incidencefrom 540 cases in 2008 to 79cases in 2011. This year theMinistry of Health is on track foranother successful year, having

reduced the number of cases to33 in 9 communities, a drasticreduction from 2011 in which 27communities were producingcases. The Ministry continues totake an integrated approach toMalaria control in order toreduce cases. Health educationremains at the forefront whilecomplementing other effortssuch as Indoor Residual Spraying, distribution of long lasting insecticide treated bed nets, andengaging in community basedefforts to control and eliminatemosquito breeding sites.

This is a significant year in thehistory of Sacred Heart Collegeas it will simultaneouslycelebrate the golden anniversaryof the first graduating class, theclass of 1964. We hada chance to speak with Mr. Canoearlier this week and what he toldus was quite interesting. He told us that Sacred Heart

FacundoCastillo. It started with anenrollment of 31 students ofwhich 19 graduated in 1964. The first classroom was houseddownstairs of the Stork Club onHudson Street, in front of BlueAngels Night Club where itremained for an entire year. Inthe second year however, with theaddition of a second batch ofstudents starting first form, theschool moved across the streetto more spacious accommoda-tions in a building where theHudson Chinese stores iscurrently located. It later movedto the Sacred Heart PrimarySchool compound where they

remained until graduation. Mr. Cano said that some of thegraduates who are still with us tothis day are Owen “Mr . O”Gentle, Raymond “BrotherRay” Garcia, Lilia Balan,Alvar o Bautista, Alejandr oSalazar, Edith Bejos, Joe Mena,Noemi Awe, David Cab andMatildo Canto. “Edith and Joe,” he said “werecollege sweethearts and aremarried to this day as asuccessful business couple.”Like Eulogio; Matildo and Davidare retired primary schoolteachers. Alvaro is a retiredpublic officer who held a seniorposition at the DevelopmentFinance Corporation and Owenworked for many years in theMinistry of Natural Resource andin retirement he continues towork as a land specialist andprofessional evaluator. Coming from a poor SantaFamilia family, Mr. Canoinformed that it was quite achallenge for his father to pay the$10 a month fee. He said thatafter the first year his father just

could not afford to continuepaying his tuition. Notwithstand-ing, he remained in school as themonthly fee accumulated.“Father Martin did not put meout” said Mr. Cano, “He told methat he saw great potentials inme. He told me that I was goingto be a teacher and that when Istart working I can pay the bill.” Immediately after graduatingfrom high school Mr. Canobegan his teaching career and, steadfast to the commitment, hepaid the college fees. Histeaching career which spannedover 20 years ended prematurelydue to a medical condition whichhe believes was caused by theconstant inhalation of chalk dust.Teaching took Mr. Cano toBullet Tree Falls Village,Mountain Pine Ridge, SantaFamilia (his home village) SantaElena and finally to Sacred HeartPrimary School. He is also agraduate from the UWI BelizeCity campus 2 year Teacher Di-ploma program. He got involved in electoralpolitics in 1984 when he ran onthe UDP slate for town council. When the votes were counted hedid very well which he attributesto having served as a teacher inboth Santa Elena and San Ignaciowhich afforded him the opportu-nity to interact with parents. Hewas appointed Mayor of the town.He went on in the council for sixterms. Mr. Cano is a Senior Justice ofthe Peace and in 2008 hewas honored as a Member ofthe British Empire for hiscontribution to education andpolitics.
