Success in politics is allabout the mass participation ofvoters in the electoral process.Conventions are conducted toallow as many supporters aspossible a first opportunity toelect the candidates they want torepresent them in the ensuinground of elections. Restricting the number ofpersons voting in a conventionto a select very few is grosslyunfair and disrespectful tovoters and candidates alike as itpresents obvious questions suchas: Who selects the few votersthat will make the decision forthe masses? Are these specialvoters selected to favor onecandidate over another? Were allcandidates, or just the chosenones, made aware of thesespecial voters so as to affordthem the opportunity to seektheir support weeks before theconvention? This action is a blatant violationof life’s basic principle of “Theminority can have their say butthe majority will have its way”.In this case, “The majority canhave its say but a selectminority will have its way.” In the San Ignacio/Santa Elenascenario, the opposition PeoplesUnited Party allowed only 1.5%of the voting population to electtheir municipal slate while theUnited Democratic Party polledover 25% of the electorate toelect the party’s candidates. In the Benque Viejo Townscenario, the opposition PeoplesUnited Party selected a measly2% of Benque voters to elect itsslate as opposed to the UnitedDemocratic Party which lastweek attracted over 23% of thevoters in Benque to vote for thecandidates of their choice.

Contributed By: Janice Swift Luke 14:33 - “Whosoever he beof you that forsaketh not allthat he hath, he cannot be Mydisciple.” Three times over in this chapter, ourLord says these solemn words: “hecannot be My disciple.” There arethree conditions of discipleship. First,we must be prepared to put firstthings first; second, we must bewilling to suffer daily crucifixion; third,we must be detached from all things, because attached to Christ. Theconditions seem severe, but they mustbe fulfilled, if we would enter Christ’sSchool. Disciple stands for learner. OurLord is prepared to teach us themysteries of the Kingdom of God;but it is useless to enter His classunless we have resolved to do as Hesays. Put first things first. Whenour Lord uses the word hate, Heclearly means that the love we are tohave for Him is to be so much greater, that comparatively our naturalaffection will be as if it were hate. Noone could have loved His Mothermore than our Lord did. In His dyingagony His special thought and carewas for her, but on three differentoccasions He put her aside. We are

What It Means To Be A Christiansometimes called to put aside thosewho are nearest and dearest, iftheir demands conflict with the claimsof Christ. The daily cross. In each of us thereis the self-principle, and for each ofus there is a perpetual necessity todeny self. Some talk about bearingthe cross in a glib fashion, but itstrue meaning is shame, suffering, andsorrow, which no one realizes butGod, and which perhaps strikesdeeper down into the roots of ourbeing as we grow older. There is anopportunity in your life, in respect tosome person or circumstance, for anever-deepening appreciation ofunion with Christ in His death, and for which you must be dailyprepared to surrender your own wayand will. Renunciation. It may be necessaryto surrender all we have for Christ,or it may be that He will ask us tohold all as a steward or trustee forHimself and others. No one can laydown the rule for another. The mainpoint to decide is this: “Am Iwilling to do what Christ wantsme to do; to yield my will for Himto mould it, and my life for Himto work through it?” If so, all elsewill adjust itself.

BIBLE MEDIT ATION: “Honour thy father and thymother: that thy days may be longupon the land which the Lord thyGod giveth thee.” Exodus 20:12

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Whether you are young or old, youcan honor your parents. How? Byshowing respect. Leviticus 19:3 says,“Ye shall fear every man hismother, and his father, and keepmy Sabbaths: I am the LORDyour God.” Now that word “fear”doesn’t mean to quake in thepresence of your parents. That is, youare to have a holy respect for yourfather and your mother.

Honoring Our Parents Always You may say, “But my par entsare not worthy of respect.” Withall due respect, you aren’t either.None of us are worthy. Only perfectchildren can demand perfect parents, and no children are perfect. Ourparents are imperfect. We areimperfect. But God is holy, and Hesays that we are to respect ourparents.

ACTION POINT : What’s your relationship like withyour parents? If you’ve beenshowing less than the type of biblicalrespect God requires, then begintoday to turn that around for His glory!Contributed by: Janice Swift

By: Lysa TerkeurstContributed by: Janice Swift"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."John 8:32 (NIV) Tears. Wailing. Screaming. Afull-blown meltdown. When my youngest daughter,Brooke, was a baby this was oftenmy reality when I tried to run errandswith her. I can remember just tryingto get to one more place, knowingwe should have been home an hourearlier for her nap. But also knowingthere were things that had to get done,I pressed on, hoping for the best. Brooke, on the other hand, wantedto get out of that car, and she madesure everybody knew it. Whinesquickly turned to screams. My touch has always comfortedBrooke. And while I couldn't do muchto comfort her while driving, I wouldoften reach my arm into the backseatand gently pat her leg. It took a fewminutes, but eventually she'd settledown and reach her tiny hand out tohold mine. When Brooke was older but still ayoung girl, she had a performance withher praise dance team from school. Icouldn't wait to see Brooke performthese dances she'd been working onand talking about for weeks. But justa few minutes before the performancewas about to begin, a very distraughtBrooke made her way to theaudience to find me. With tears streaming down hercheeks, she explained that the teacherhad moved her from the front row tothe back row, and she didn't knowthe back row's part. I whispered,"Honey, just watch the other girlsfor cues and follow in step. Youknow this dance, Brooke. You'llbe fine." She sobbed back, "I won't be fineif I mess up. And I know I'm goingto mess up." That's when it occurred to me. Shewould need my touch to get throughthis fear. But we both knew it wouldn't bepossible for my arm to reach all theway up to the stage. So I quickly whispered, "Brooke, lock your eyes with mine, and I'lltouch you with my smile. Don'tlook at anyone or anything else.It doesn't matter if you mess up.What matters is that you keepyour eyes on me the whole time. We'll do this together." Quietly she asked, "The wholetime, Mommy?"

We AMS To Please

Leading Your Kids Thr ough Their Fears "The whole time, Brooke," Ireplied as I watched my brave girlwalk away to take her place in line. Several times during the dance,Brooke fell out of step. She knew hersteps weren't perfect, so her eyesbrimmed with tears. But the tearsnever fell. With her eyes perfectlylocked on my smiling face, shedanced. I smiled when her steps were righton track. I smiled when they weren't. My smile was not based on herperformance. My smile was born outof an incredible love for this precious, courageous little girl. As she kept her attention focusedsolely on my smile and the touch ofmy gaze, it was as if the world slowlyfaded away and we were the onlyones in the room. This is the way God wants me todance through life. Though I can't physically see Him,my soul pictures Him so clearly. In mymind's eye He is there. The touch ofHis gaze wraps about me, comfortsme, assures me, and makes the worldseem strangely dim. As long as my gaze is locked on His,I dance and He smiles. The fear and anxiety go away. Thesnickers and jeers of others fadeinto the distance. And even my ownstumbling doesn't cause the samefeelings of defeat. My steps so often betray thedesire of my heart, but it is not myperfect performance that capturesHis attention. Rather, it is mycomplete dependence on Him that Henotices. He then whispers, "Hold on to Meand what I say about you. For Mywords are the truth of who you areand the essence of what you werecreated to be." I imagine Him pausing and, withtears in His eyes and a crack in Hisvoice, He adds, "Then you willknow the truth, and the truth willset you free" (John 8:32). His truth frees you fromthe chains of fear, doubt anddespair. His truth frees me fromfeeling unable and inadequate. Histruth washes over me as I whisper,"I want to be a woman who saysyes to God." And in that moment, with my eyeslocked on His, I am. Dear Lord, I want to hold onto Youand what You say about me. Continueto show me Your truth today as Ipursue You above all else. In Jesus'Name, Amen.

Two friends met in the street. Onelooked sad and almost on the vergeof tears. The other man said, "Heymy friend, how come you look likethe whole world has caved in?" The sad fellow said, "Let me tellyou. Three weeks ago, an uncledied and left me 50-thousanddollars." "That's not bad at all...!" "Hold on, I'm just getting

Never Satisfiedstarted. Two weeks ago, a cousinI never knew kicked-the-bucketand left me 95-thousand, tax-freeto boot." "Well, that's great! I'd likethat." "Last week, my grandfatherpassed away. I inherited almost amillion." "So why are so glum?" "This week - nothing!"

Farmers Fred and Luke werefishing on the side of the road. Theymade a sign saying "The End isNear! Turn yourself around nowbefore it's too late!," and showedit to each passing car. One driver that passed didn'tappreciate the sign and shouted,

The End Is Near"Leave us alone you religiousnuts!" All of a sudden they heard a bigsplash. Fred grinned at Luke. "Do youthink we should just put up asign that says: 'Bridge Out'instead?"

After tucking their three-year-oldchild Sammy in for bed one night, hisparents heard sobbing coming fromhis room. Rushing back in, they foundhim crying hysterically. He managedto tell them that he had swallowed apenny and he was sure he wasgoing to die. No amount of talking

Penny For Your Thoughtswas helping. His father, in an attempt to calm himdown, palmed a penny from hispocket and pretended to pull it fromSammy's ear. Sammy was delighted. In a flash, he snatched it from hisfather's hand, swallowed, and thencheerfully demanded, "Do it again,Dad!"

I was coming back from visiting myson in my Miami and I stopped at arest stop to use the bathroom. I justsat down on the toilet when I heard avoice coming from the stall next tomine, “Hey! How’s it going?” Although I was quite surprised, andI wasn’t in the habit of conversing tothe people next to me in the stall, Inevertheless answered him, “I’mfine” I said “thanks for asking.”

Rest Stop Joke “What are you doing?” Askedthe same voice. To be honest I was a bit takenaback by the brazenness of thisfellow, but I would never ignoreanyone so I calmly answered, “I’mreleaving myself.” Then I heard the same voice again,“I’m going to have to callyou back, some smart-aleck isanswering all of my questions.”

A preacher, who shall we say was"humor impaired," attended aconference to help encourageand better equip pastors for theirministry. Among the speakers weremany well known and dynamicspeakers. One such boldly approached thepulpit and, gathering the entirecrowd's attention, said, "The bestyears of my life were spent in thearms of a woman that wasn't mywife!" The crowd was shocked! Hefollowed up by saying, "And thatwoman was my mother!" - Thecrowd burst into laughter anddelivered the rest of his talk, whichwent over quite well.

A Joke Backfires The next week, the pastor decidedhe'd give this humor thing a try, anduse that joke in his sermon. As hesurely approached the pulpit thatsunny Sunday, he tried to rehearse thejoke in his head. It suddenly seemeda bit foggy to him. Getting to the microphone he saidloudly, "The greatest years of mylife were spent in the arms ofanother woman that was not mywife!" The congregation inhaled half the airin the room. After standing therefor almost 10 seconds in the stunnedsilence, trying to recall the second halfof the joke, the pastor finally blurtedout, "...and I can't remember whoshe was!"

Two Washington politicianshad locked themselves out of theircar, and unfortunately some importantpapers they needed for a meetingwere inside. "Let's use a coathanger to pull up the lock,"suggested the first. "Oh, no," argued the second."Someone might see us andthink we were trying to break in." "Then we could use my

Shingles is a viral infection thatcauses a painful rash. Althoughshingles can occur anywhere on yourbody, it most often appears as a singlestripe of blisters that wraps aroundeither the left or the right side of yourtorso. Shingles is caused by thevaricella-zoster virus — the samevirus that causes chickenpox. Afteryou've had chickenpox, the viruslies inactive in nerve tissue near yourspinal cord and brain. Years later, thevirus may reactivate as shingles. While it isn't a life-threateningcondition, shingles can be verypainful. Vaccines can help reduce therisk of shingles, while early treatmentcan help shorten a shinglesinfection and lessen the chance ofcomplications.

Symptoms The signs and symptoms of shinglesusually affect only a small section ofone side of your body. These signsand symptoms may include: * Pain, burning, numbness or tingling * A red rash that begins a few daysafter the pain * Fluid-filled blisters that break openand crust over * Itching Some people also experience: * Fever and chills * General achiness * Headache * Fatigue Pain is usually the first symptomof shingles. For some, it can be

intense. Depending on the locationof the pain, it can sometimes bemistaken for a symptom of problemsaffecting the heart, lungs or kidneys. Some people experience shingles painwithout ever developing the rash. Most commonly, the shinglesrash develops as a stripe of blistersthat wraps around either the left orright side of your torso. Sometimesthe shingles rash occurs aroundone eye or on one side of the neck orface.

When to see a doctor Contact your doctor promptly ifyou suspect shingles, but especially inthe following situations: * The pain and rash occur near aneye. If left untreated, this infection canlead to permanent eye damage. * You're 65 or older, which increasesyour risk of complications. * You or someone in your family hasa weakened immune system (dueto cancer, medications or chronicillness).

* The rash is widespread andpainful.

Risk Factors Anyone who has ever hadchickenpox can develop shingles. Most adults in the United States hadchickenpox when they were children, before the advent of the routinechildhood vaccination that nowprotects against chickenpox. Factors that may increase your riskof developing shingles include: * Age - Shingles is most commonin people older than 50. The riskincreases with age. Some expertsestimate that half the people who liveto the age of 85 will experienceshingles at some point in their lives. * Diseases - Diseases that weakenyour immune system, such as HIV/AIDS and cancer, can increase yourrisk of shingles. * Cancer treatments -Undergoing radiation orchemotherapy can lower yourresistance to diseases and may

trigger shingles. * Medications - Drugs designedto prevent rejection of transplantedorgans can increase your risk ofshingles — as can prolonged use ofsteroids, such as prednisone.

Prevention Two vaccines may helpprevent shingles — the chickenpox(varicella) vaccine and the shingles(varicella-zoster) vaccine.Chickenpox vaccine The varicella vaccine (Varivax) hasbecome a routine childhoodimmunization to prevent chickenpox. The vaccine is also recommended foradults who've never had chickenpox.Though the vaccine doesn'tguarantee you won't get chickenpoxor shingles, it can reduce yourchances of complications and reducethe severity of the disease.Shingles vaccine The Food and DrugAdministration has approvedthe use of the varicella-zostervaccine (Zostavax) for adults age50 and older. Like the chickenpoxvaccine, the shingles vaccine doesn'tguarantee you won't get shingles. But this vaccine will likely reducethe course and severity of the diseaseand reduce your risk of postherpeticneuralgia. The shingles vaccine is usedonly as a prevention strategy, however. It's not intended to treatpeople who currently have thedisease. The vaccine contains livevirus and should not be given topeople who have weakened immunesystems.
