Pope Francis Warns Church Could Become 'Compassionate NGO'Pope Francis Warns Church Could Become 'Compassionate NGO'Pope Francis Warns Church Could Become 'Compassionate NGO'Pope Francis Warns Church Could Become 'Compassionate NGO'Pope Francis Warns Church Could Become 'Compassionate NGO'

Pope Francis: "I would like all of us... to have thecourage to walk in the presence of God"

Pope Francis has warned theCatholic Church would become "acompassionate NGO" withoutspiritual renewal. In a Sistine Chapel Mass withcardinals on his first day as Churchleader, the pontiff said: "If we do notconfess to Christ, what would webe?"We would end up a compassion-ate NGO. What would happenwould be like when children makesand castles and then it all fallsdown." Francis is the first Latin American -and the first Jesuit - Pope. The BBC's David Willey, in Rome, says the 76-year-old has already beenswift to stamp his style on the papacy. Pope Francis is regarded as adoctrinal conservative, but he is alsoseen as a potential force for reformof the Vatican bureaucracy, analystssay. On Wednesday night, Pope Francisendeared himself to the crowds in StPeter's Square - and underlined hisreputation for humility - when he askedthem to bless him before blessing themin return from the balcony of thebasilica. The Vatican's account of his firsthours in the top job on Thursday alsoemphasised Pope Francis's humility, describing how he shunned a specialcar and security detail provided to

take him to the Vatican, travellinginstead on a bus with the othercardinals. Following his first outing as popeto the Rome basilica on Thursday,Francis went back to the clergy housein a city centre side street where hehad been staying ahead of theconclave that elected him onWednesday. "He packed his bags and thenhe went to pay the bill for hisroom so as to set a good example,"said Vatican spokesman FatherFederico Lombardi. He also broke tradition byremaining standing to receivecardinals' acts of homage after hiselection, instead of sitting in the papalthrone, Father Lombardi said.

On Friday, Pope Francis will meetall the cardinals, including those aged

over 80 who did not take part in theconclave. On Saturday he will meetthe world's media at a specialpapal audience, an opportunityperhaps to set out some of his globalvision, says the BBC's JamesRobbins in Rome. A visit to his predecessor BenedictXVI at his retreat at Castel Gandolfooutside Rome is also planned, but willnot take place in the next couple ofdays, Father Lombardi said. The visit to Benedict is important, correspondents say, as the existenceof a living retired pope has promptedfears of a possible rival power. Francis will be installed officially inan inauguration Mass on Tuesday 19March, the Vatican added.

Early HIV Drugs 'Functionally Cure About One In Ten'

HIV bursting out of a white blood cell it has hijacked

By: James GallagherHealth and science reporter, BBCNews Rapid treatment after HIV infectionmay be enough to "functionallycure" about a 10th of thosediagnosed early, say researchers inFrance. They have been analysing 14people who stopped therapy, buthave since shown no signs of thevirus resurging. It follows reports of a baby girlbeing effectively cured after very earlytreatment in the US. However, most people infectedwith HIV do not find out until thevirus has fully infiltrated the body. The group of patients, known as theVisconti cohort, all started treatmentwithin 10 weeks of being infected. They stuck to a course ofantiretroviral drugs for three years, onaverage, but then stopped.

The drugs keep the virus only incheck, they cannot eradicate it fromits hiding places inside the immunesystem. Normally, when the drugs stop, thevirus bounces back. This has not happened in theVisconti patients. Some have been ableto control HIV levels for a decade.

Dr Asier Saez-Cirion, from theInstitute Pasteur in Paris, said: "Mostindividuals who follow the sametreatment will not control theinfection, but there are a few ofthem who will." He said 5-15% of patients may befunctionally cured, meaning they nolonger needed drugs, by attacking the

virus soon after infection. "They still have HIV, it is noteradication of HIV, it is a kind ofremission of the infection." Their latest study, in the journalPLoS Pathogens, analysed whathappened to the immune system of thepatients. Early treatment may limit thenumber of unassailable HIV hideoutsthat are formed. However, theresearchers said it was "unclear"why only some patients werefunctionally cured. Dr Andrew Freedman, a readerin infectious diseases at CardiffUniversity School of Medicine, said the findings were "certainlyinteresting". "The presumption is thatthey've started treatment veryearly and the virus hasn't spreadto so many of the long-termreservoirs and that's why it works. "Whether they'll control itforever, or whether it'll be for anumber of years and subsequentlythey will progress and the viruswill reappear, we don't know." However, he cautioned that manypatients would be diagnosed muchlater than in this study.

Brazil Outrage Over Sao Paulo Cyclist's Lost Arm A road collision in Brazil has causedoutrage after police said a motoristdrove off with a cyclist's severed armattached to his vehicle. The driver, who later turnedhimself in, told Sao Paulo police thathe had dumped the limb in a stream. The arm has not been recovered butdoctors believe it could have beenreattached, police told local media. The cyclist - a window-cleaner onhis way to work - is said to be in astable condition in hospital. The accident that saw the cyclist'sarm torn off took place on Sundaymorning on Avenida Paulista, one ofSao Paulo's busiest streets.

'Difficult to find' The authorities say the driver, a 22-year old student, will be charged withattempted murder and driving whileunder the influence of alcohol. However, they haven't yet decidedhow to charge him for the disposal ofthe arm. The student says the arm fell intothe car after the collision. The motorist's lawyer, CassioPaoletti, has told BBC Brasil hedenies the attempted murderaccusation and that his client did notstop for fear of the reactions ofwitnesses. "If he had stayed, they wouldhave killed the boy. For instance,

the police station was surroundedby hundreds of people whoverbally abused and threw cans atmy client's father, who's a60-year-old man," Mr Paoletti said,

adding he would press for seriousbodily harm charges. A policeman told the BBC the casewas still under investigation, but thedriver had admitted to throwing the

arm into the stream. "It has dirty, murky waters, soit might be difficult to find it," hesaid, adding that the man was beingquestioned about the details. Police say the motorist was on hisway back from a night out when hiscar hit the window-cleaner. After the accident, he reportedlydrove a friend home and discardedthe arm, before turning himself in. A number of cyclists gatheredoutside the police district where thedriver was being questioned toprotest. Cycle activists have beencampaigning for more safety on thecity's streets for months.
