To me this means many things, the love of my family, my friends, and my P.E.O. sisters. I have seen the loving concern expressed by members in so many ways when I have visited a chapter or attended P.E.O. events. I have also seen the joy that this love brings to the eyes of a member when they receive a card, a meal or just a pat on the hand. I challenge each of you to continue seeking out those in need of a kind word or deed. This loving concern is the special ingredient of P.E.O. and it is, in my opinion, why we are able to celebrate our sesquicentennial birthday this year. Also, February can bring a change in the local chapter officers. Does your chapter hold elections in February? If not, I hope you would consider this option. It is helpful and allows for a full month of officer transition training. With upcoming elections in mind, it is my hope that each chapter member consider the opportunity to step into an officer position. There are wonderful resources on the International website to help you with any office that you hold.

I also want to take this time to express my appreciation for all of the chapter officers who have served this year. Some were new and others returning, but each of you have been a shining example to your chapter. Thank you, also, to those chapter members who hosted meetings, gave a program or served on committees. Your service means a lot to your chapter and the state.

Every Sister a V.I.P. — Very Important P.E.O. By Brenda Boren, M, PSP, Utah State Membership Committee

As we embark on the historical celebration of 150 years of P.E.O., we are reminded that every sister is a valued member of our sisterhood. The Membership Team of International Chapter is leading us in a campaign called “Every Sister is a VIP” (Very Important P.E.O.), a focused effort to show loving concern for every member as we move forward. We all play a part in ensuring that P.E.O. membership is for a lifetime for each of our Very Important P.E.O.s. Being aware of a sister’s needs is the first step to ensure she feels she is a valued member of your chapter and the sisterhood. As a regularly attending member of your chapter, you can take simple steps to

demonstrate a loving concern for each sister. Choose to consciously greet each sister at your next meeting, letting her know she's not taken for granted. Share good wishes with those celebrating a birthday or membership anniversary near her special day. Make note of a sister that hasn't attended an event for a while or someone who rarely misses a meeting that's not there and reach out to her, demonstrating how very important she is. You will be hearing more about this campaign throughout the year and the specific resources available from your chapter president and chapter membership committee. Through reaffirming this simple statement to each and every sister, we can all work together to ensure that “Every Sister is a V.I.P.!

Share Gift of YOU with P.E.O. By Saundie Stone, X, State Nominating Committee

We hear a lot about sharing the gift of P.E.O. with someone else. Well, a special P.E.O. sister shared the gift of P.E.O. with YOU. That special sister thought YOU would make a remarkable P.E.O. because she saw your gifts and talents and your willingness to give of yourself. She saw your drive to help others reach for the stars. What better way to honor that special sister than to serve on the Utah State Board and give the gift of YOU!

YOU can make a major difference in the lives of others during your tenure on the state board. The friendships YOU make will last YOU a lifetime and your spirit of sisterhood will grow tremendously. And the knowledge YOU will gain will allow YOU to educate others. Don’t travel to Oz just to find out you’ve already got what it takes. Reach inside yourself and see what that special sister saw in YOU when she introduced YOU to P.E.O. And give us the gift of YOU! If you’ve been a P.E.O. for five years or more and have served as a chapter president for at least one term, YOU are qualified to lead on to greater adventures. Don’t miss out on the experience, the gained knowledge, and the friendships because you’re a little shy. Challenge yourself and others by taking this step forward. Give us the gift of YOU! And encourage others to do the same. Local chapter presidents received the application and instructions to submit a name for consideration back in November. YOU can contact your chapter president or the Nominating Committee at [email protected] to obtain what YOU need to get started. The deadline is Friday, March 15, so please start now. Your chapter will need to write a letter of recommendation and endorsement and YOU will need to complete an application. The letter and application need to be submitted to chairman Brenda Boren, M, PSP, by email: [email protected] or mail: 4918 S. 2925 West, Roy, UT 84067 prior to the deadline. The members of the Nominating Committee look forward to hearing from YOU. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

Start Planning for ‘C’ for Yourself Saturday By Kate Bally, AJ, Utah Cottey College Committee

Cottey College is hosting a “C for Yourself” day this year on Saturday, April 27. Cottey College has revamped the “C” For Yourself visit event. Instead of a three-day, full weekend event, they have condensed everything Utah students need to know about Cottey into a short one-day visit. The visit can be extended to a full weekend if desired. During the quick trip, Utah students can meet with Cottey College students and faculty, tour the campus, and run their questions by the financial aid and admission teams. The visit can also be customized by scheduling a private music lesson or adding an overnight experience in one of our suites. Whatever the need is, Cottey College can address it! The “C” for Yourself event will be open for registration starting Friday, March 1. There will be more information about the costs for transportation, meals, extending the visit and the on-campus schedule of events available at that time. If there is anything that Cottey College can do to help you set up the visit, don’t hesitate to contact them at [email protected] or 417-667-6010.

150th Founders’ Day Celebration March 9 By Carol Day, Z

Please join Chapter Z Provo for the 150th Founders’ Day Celebration. The event will be held at our community’s gem, the Springville Museum of Art, and will be catered by another community gem, the Utah Valley University Culinary Arts Program. We would like to celebrate the creation of P.E.O. by taking a look back to our seven founders. Did you know that Franc Roads was a teacher in Utah? We would like to celebrate the advancement of women through the Better Days 2020 campaign. Did you know that Utah women were the first to vote? Did you know that Utah elected the first woman senator in the nation? "By celebrating these historical events in creative and communal ways, we will draw attention to our storied past, be a positive catalyst for conversation and remembrance, and give energy to Utah’s women today to be more engaged participants in our corporate and political communities." - Better Days 2020 website The registration deadline is Monday, February 25. Space in the Museum of Art is limited. Please register early. Register by check payable to Sylvia Sharman (at the Feb. 14 Reciprocity meeting) or mail 584 S. 400 East, Lehi 84043 or for your convenience through Paypal by clicking here. Please include your name, P.E.O. chapter and $25.00.

NASA Astronaut to Speak at Convention By Glenda LeHoux, V, Hostess Committee Chair

In recent weeks, China landed an unmanned spacecraft on the far side of the moon. Even more exciting is the fact that the Utah State Board has landed a former astronaut to speak at this year’s Convention!

Col. Charlie Precourt had a distinguished 15-year

career with NASA. He is a veteran of four space flights- including two as mission commander. He has logged more than 932 hours in space. Col. Precourt was also the deputy program manager for the International Space Station, chief of the astronaut corps and director of operations for NASA in the Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia.

He also served for 23 years with the U.S. Air Force.

He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base and flew as a test pilot on the F-15E development program. He was also an F-15 pilot/instructor/flight commander in Europe .and an Instructor pilot at both Reese and Edwards Air Force Bases.

We are so fortunate to have him as our speaker. It is not often that any of us will have the chance to hear from an astronaut in person. In addition to his stories of life in outer space, he will have a visual presentation of the wonders that he has seen. We are excited that Col. Precourt has agreed to speak to our convention. Reserve your seats for the Convention Celebration Banquet now!

Convention 2019 Registration Goes Digital By Lisa Laird, P, Convention Coordinator

We are excited to roll out the new Convention website later this month. Every Utah P.E.O. member with an email address on file will receive an email invitation to the Convention 2019 website. You will be able to access all the convention information from this website. Each P.E.O. will register herself and her guests from this website. (Only those without access to email or computers may call the registrar or convention coordinator.) Each P.E.O. may also pay for her convention expenses via the website with a credit card. There will also be information for you if you prefer to pay by check. You will receive a confirmation email upon completion.

Each member will register with a “registration type.” If you are unsure of your registration type, please contact your chapter president, as there are several options. We hope this registration process is much easier and more straightforward than the cumbersome spreadsheets of days gone by. Presidents – please ensure each member of your chapter is informed about this change to the way Convention communication and registration is handled. Also, please talk to those without email to ensure that they may still register. More information will be sent to you in an email later this month.
