Starters Unit 9 Lesson 1 Starters Unit 9 Teaching notes Lesson 1 PHOTOCOPIABLE © ELT Songs 2020 Vocabulary: mum, dad, sister, brother, grandma, grandpa Grammar: Who is that? That’s my (dad). 1 Start the lesson: Review the language from Units 7 and 8. Play the Unit 8 music video and then mime playing with a toy. Say I’ve got a … Children complete your sentence. Use your hands to gesture big or small. Say It’s … and children say big or small. Volunteers can then take your role. 2 Video introduction: Remind children about the Planet Popstars and The Planet Pop Show. Explain that Alex will tell Alice about his family today and then sing a song. Show a photo of a family and say family. Talk to the children in their own language about families. 3 Conversation practice: Before you play the video, tell children to watch and decide if Alex’s family is big or small. Play the video and elicit the answer (big). Tell pupils to watch the video again and listen more closely. After they have watched the video, pupils tell you what they can remember. 4 Vocabulary presentation and game: Present the family vocabulary to the class using the flashcards and model pronunciation. Display the flashcards and say the words again. Children point to the correct flashcard. Then divide the class into six groups, giving each group a flashcard. Say a family member, and the group with that flashcard stands up and sits down as quickly as possible. Repeat. 5 Music video: Play the Unit 9 music video for children to enjoy. Ask the class whose family the song is about (Alex’s). Then play the video again, encouraging participation with the dancing and actions. 6 Song worksheet: 1 Pupils listen to the song and number the pictures in the order they hear the family members mentioned. Answers: a 4 b 5 c 2 d 3 e 1 f 6 2 Pupils draw matching lines from the zoomed-in picture of each family member to the correct person in the big picture. Answers: 1 grandpa 2 sister 3 grandma 4 mum 5 brother 6 dad Fast finishers: Pupils find and circle the three toys in the picture in activity 2, then say the words. Extra activity: Ask six volunteers to come to the front and give them each a family flashcard. Say a word and the child holding that flashcard holds it up for the class to see. Repeat with other children. 7 End the lesson: Ask children to circle a family member on the Song worksheet. Say a family member and everyone who chose that person stands up.     Vocabulary: mum, dad, sister, brother, grandma, grandpaGrammar: Who is that? That’s my (dad).

    1 Start the lesson: Children pass the family flashcards round the class until you say Stop! Say, e.g. Hello, Dad! and the child with the dad flashcard holds it up and says Hello! Repeat. Then play the Unit 9 music video.

    2 Video introduction: Tell the class that today, DJ Daniel is going to help them say the family vocabulary. Then they are going to learn and say a rap with these words.

    3 Pronunciation guide: Play the Pronunciation guide while showing the family flashcards. Play the video again, pausing for pupils to focus on the words on the screen, listen for pronunciation and repeat. Display the flashcards and play the video again. Pause for children to repeat and point to the correct flashcard.

    4 Vocabulary game: Put the flashcards on the board and write the words underneath. A child removes a flashcard and shows it to the class, who all say the word. The child stays at the board with their flashcard. Repeat with different children, leaving the words on the board. Ask the children with the flashcards to mix themselves up, then place their flashcard back on the board above the correct word with help from the class. When the flashcards are all in place, the class says the words.

    5 Vocabulary rap: Play the Unit 9 vocabulary rap. Then play it again for the class to join in and repeat. Divide the class into six groups, giving each group a flashcard. Play the rap again and the groups wave their arms for their family member. Repeat.

    CLIL (Science): Use the brother and sister flashcards to discuss the topic of twins. Model the word twin. Elicit how a twin is different to a brother/sister.

    6 Vocabulary worksheet: 1 Pupils circle and say the correct family member. Answers: 1 mum 2 brother 3 grandpa 4 dad 5 sister 6 grandma (1 mark for each correctly circled word) 2 Pupils write the words, then tick/cross pictures 1–6 if the people appear in the big picture. Answers: 1 grandma 2 dad 3 sister 4 mum 5 brother 6 grandpa (½ mark for each correct word; ½ mark for each correctly ticked/crossed picture)

    How do you feel? Pupils choose and colour a face according to how they feel about their work.

    Fast finishers: Pupils draw their family, point and say.

    Formative assessment: Use the pupils’ Vocabulary worksheets to complete the Unit 9 evaluation grid.

    7 End the lesson: Play the vocabulary rap. The class joins in and points to the flashcards, then says Goodbye.

    Vocabulary: mum, dad, sister, brother, grandma, grandpaGrammar: Who is that? That’s my (dad).

    1 Start the lesson: Divide the class into six groups. Give each group a family flashcard and have them stand in lines. Play the Unit 9 vocabulary rap and the child at the front of each group repeats and dances when they hear their family member. They then go to the back of their group’s line. Repeat.

    2 Video introduction: Tell the class that today, they are going to hear Kim talking about her family. Then they are going to sing along to a karaoke video.

    3 Grammar tutorial: Before you play the video, elicit and write the family words on the board. Children watch the grammar tutorial and tell you which of these family members Kim talks about (mum, dad and grandpa). Play the video again, pausing to point and ask the class Who is that? Say That’s my … and children answer with the correct family member.

    4 Grammar presentation and game: Using the family flashcards, say Who is that? That’s my (mum). Hold up the flashcards again one at a time and say Who is that? That’s my … for children to complete. Repeat, encouraging children to repeat the question and then the answer in full. Display the flashcards on the board with a number 1–6 above each. Say a number and ask Who is that? Pupils look and answer, e.g. That’s my dad. Children continue in pairs.

    5 Grammar worksheet: 1 Pupils read the sentences and match them to the correct pictures. Answers: a 2 b 4 c 3 d 1 (1 mark for each correctly numbered picture) 2 Pupils look at the silhouettes and find the correct family member. They complete the sentences with the correct words. Answers: 1 brother 2 dad 3 mum 4 grandpa (1 mark for each correct word)

    How do you feel? Pupils choose and colour a face according to how they feel about their work.

    Fast finishers: Pupils draw a family member. They share their picture with another fast finisher and ask and answer Who is that? That’s my …

    Formative assessment: Use the pupils’ Grammar worksheets to complete the Unit 9 evaluation grid.

    6 Karaoke: Play the Unit 9 music video to remind children of the song. Then play the karaoke version for children to watch. Play it again, breaking it down for children to practise. When children feel confident, play it in full for them to join in.

    7 End the lesson: Ask pupils to reflect on what they have learnt in Unit 9: they can talk about their family, ask and answer questions about people, do a rap and sing a song! Congratulate the children and then play the karaoke video. Then say Goodbye!
